  • Recently, building structures tend to be super high-rise and large-scale with the development of concrete technology. When high-rise building is constructed of reinforced concrete structure, it has a disadvantage that its own weight increases. Light weight aggregate(LWA) was developed to compensate for these shortcomings. Manufacturing concrete using these light weight aggregates has the advantage of reducing the self weight of the reinforced concrete structure, but has a disadvantage in that the strength of the concrete is reduced. In this study, an experimental study was conducted to investigate the strength characteristics of hardened cement according to the presence or absence of surface coating of lightweight aggregates. As a result, in terms of compressive strength, the surface-coated lightweight aggregate exhibited higher strength than the uncoated lightweight aggregate. Also, it was considered that this is because the interfacial voids of the surface coated lightweight aggregate mixed cement hardened body were filled with blast furnace slag fine powder particles.

  • An increase in carbon emissions leads to the problem of global warming and is an issue to be solved in other countries. The problem of carbon dioxide has many effects not only on global warming but also on people. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 4.3 million people have died because harmful substances generated indoors cannot be discharged to the outside and accumulate in the human body through the respiratory tract. In response to this situation, in order to reduce the generation of pollutants in the building itself, soak into lightweight bubble concrete to adsorb and purify indoor pollutants, mix charcoal, investigate the appropriate amount and physical characteristics, and check carbon dioxide This is an experiment for grasping the adsorption capacity, and the results are as follows. As the replacement rate of rice husk charcoal increased, the compressive strength tended to decrease, and the carbon dioxide reduction rate tended to increase. It is judged that the charcoal of rice husks shows a low density and the physical adsorption is smooth due to the porous structure. Since it is excellent in the basic physical properties and carbon dioxide adsorption surface of this experiment, it is judged that it has sufficient potential for use as an indoor finishing material.

  • In recent years, high-strength, light-weight materials have been widely used in the construction of high-rise buildings. Such structures generally have flexible, low-damping characteristics. Consequently, wind-induced oscillation greatly affects the structural safety and the comfort of the building's occupants. In this research, wind tunnel experiments were carried out to study the wind-induced vibration of a building with a tuned liquid column damper (TLCD). Then, a model for predicting the aerodynamic response in the across-wind direction was generated. Finally, a computing procedure was developed for the analytical modeling of the structural oscillation in a building with a TLCD under the wind load. The model agrees substantially with the experimental results. Therefore, it may be used to accurately calculate the structural response. Results from this investigation show that the TLCD is more advantageous for reducing the across-wind vibration than the along-wind oscillation. When the across-wind aerodynamic effects are considered, the TLCD more effectively controls the aerodynamic response. Moreover, it is also more useful in suppressing the acceleration than the displacement in biaxial directions. As s result, TLCDs are effective devices for reducing the wind-induced vibration in buildings. Parametric studies have also been conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the TLCD in suppressing the structural oscillation. This study may help engineers to more correctly predict the aerodynamic response of high-rise buildings as well as select the most appropriate TLCDs for reducing the structural vibration under the wind load. It may also improve the understanding of wind-structure interactions and wind resistant designs for high-rise buildings.

  • This study presents application effects of hybrid seismic isolation system to realize high seismic performance for low-rise lightweight buildings through a non-linear analysis and onsite experiments. The complex seismic isolation system applied in this study is a method of mixing sliding bearing and laminated rubber bearing in order to overcome limitation of laminated rubber bearing in increasing natural period of the whole seismic isolation system. As a result of the non-linear analysis, seismic isolation buildings designed with complex seismic isolation system are safe because its maximum response displacement is within allowable design displacement even for a strong earthquake which rarely occurs and its maximum response shear is less than design seismic force. As a result of the onsite experiment, the rigidity of seismic isolation stories corresponds to approximately 95.8% of the design equivalent stiffness value. This indicates that actual properties of the whole seismic isolation system correspond to design values.

  • In the past, Korea was classified as a region not affected by earthquakes. However, recent increase of earthquakes has forced to strengthen standards of earthquake resistant designs of structures to minimize seismic damage. In addition, it was thought that masonry infill walls in buildings are only acting as partitions, so these walls are not considered in analyzing building structures. But it was found that when seismic loads are applied to a structure with masonry infill walls, the walls affect the structure. Accordingly, this study conducted nonlinear static analyses for a structure constructed before applying earthquake resistant designs in two cases: when considering masonry walls and when not. The result showed that the seismic performance of the structure is insufficient. Thus, the structural resistance of the structure was also studied in two cases: when reinforcing with steel plate braces and when using carbon fiber braces. In the two cases reinforcing two different stiffeners, it was appeared that the behaviors of the structure were similar, though the cross-section area of a carbon fiber brace used to reinforcing the structure is only 12.6% of a steel plate brace, and its weight is only 2.8%. Thus, the reinforcing effect of the thin, light-weighted carbon fiber brace is much larger than that of the steel plate brace, when considering usability and constructability of both materials.

  • According to the new directives about the rational and efficient use of energy, thermal bridges in buildings have to be avoided, and the thermal insulation (TI) layer should run without interruptions all around the building - even under its foundations. The paper deals with the seismic response of multi-storeyed reinforced concrete (RC) frame building structures founded on an extruded polystyrene (XPS) layer placed beneath the foundation slab. The purpose of the paper is to elucidate the problem of buildings founded on a TI layer from the seismic resistance point of view, to assess the seismic behaviour of such buildings, and to search for the critical parameters which can affect the structural and XPS layer response. Nonlinear dynamic and static analyses were performed, and the seismic response of fixed-base (FB) and thermally insulated (TI) variants of nonlinear RC building models were compared. Soil-structure interaction was also taken into account for different types of soil. The results showed that the use of a TI layer beneath the foundation slab of a superstructure generally induces a higher peak response compared to that of a corresponding system without TI beneath the foundation slab. In the case of stiff structures located on firm soil, amplification of the response might be substantial and could result in exceedance of the superstructure's moment-rotation plastic hinge capacities or allowable lateral roof and interstorey drift displacements. In the case of heavier, slenderer, and higher buildings subjected to stronger seismic excitations, the overall response is governed by the rocking mode of oscillation, and as a consequence the compressive strength of the XPS could be insufficient. On the other hand, in the case of low-rise and light-weight buildings, the friction capacity between the layers of the applied TI foundation set might be exceeded so that sliding could occur.

  • Cyclic tests on modular building units for low-rise buildings composed of stud panels and a light-weight steel perimeter frame, were performed to evaluate the earthquake resistance such as stiffness, load-carrying capacity, ductility, and energy dissipation per load cycle. The strap-braced and sheeted stud panels were used as the primary lateral load-resistant element of the modular building units. Test results showed that the modular building units using the strap-braced and sheeted stud panels exhibited excellent post-yield ductile behaviors. The maximum drift ratios were greater than 5.37% and the displacement ductility ratios were greater than 5.76. However, the energy dissipation per load cycle was poor due to severe pinching during cyclic loading. Nominal strength, stiffness, and yield displacement of the modular building units were predicted based on plastic mechanisms. The predictions reasonably and conservatively correlated with the test results. However, the elastic stiffness of the strap-braced stud panel was significantly overestimated. For conservative design, the elastic stiffness of the strap-braced stud panel needs be decreased to 50% of the nominal value.

  • Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have given rise to climate change which is one of the most serious environmental challenges that the world faces today. In response, Republic of Korea has proposed "Low Carbon, Green Growth" as a new economic paradigm accompanying with the ultimate aim of building a sense of responsibility for the environment. Korean government has set the ambitious national GHG emission reduction target which aims 37% reduction in the business-as-usual (BAU) level of 2030. The transportation sector plays a key role in this target. In the transportation sector, the GHG reduction target of 34.3% in the BAU level by 2020 has been allocated in order to consider the industrial specificity. Furthermore, it is known that the GHG reduction in the transportation sector has relatively minimal side effects compared to those of other sectors. In order to meet this national GHG reduction target, Korean government has set $CO_2$ emission regulation of vehicle for 2020. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the reduction effects by the average GHG regulation of vehicles. $CO_2$ emissions, between 2009 and 2013 were analysed by reduction measure such as technology improvement, light-weight, segment shift, diesel vehicle sales. During this period, $CO_2$ of vehicle was reduced every year by 19.9 g/km (i.e., 3.3% reduction per year). $CO_2$ reduction of imported vehicle is greater than domestic vehicle because of segment shift toward small size vehicle and higher diesel vehicle sales.
