Multi-focal Microscopic System Using a Fiber Bundle (광섬유 다발을 이용한 다초점 현미경)

  • We have constructed and analyzed the performance of a simple fiber bundle multi-focal microscope. The microscope had a fiber bundle substituted for micro-lens array that is the core part of MMM(multi-focal multi-photon microscope). The MMM is a type of confocal microscope. To analyze the performance and characteristics of the fiber bundle multi-focal microscope, three types of samples were used: a standard grating, USAF 1951(7, 3), and 1951(7, 6). Using two polarizers and a polarizing beam splitter, we eliminated noise and got clear images. We obtained the FWHM of fiber spot images with the standard grating using two different magnifier lenses which were 63X and 20X, and found an image of the sample as a distribution of fiber spot images. For this case we used the low magnification lens, which gives denser distribution, so that we could get clearer images. In order to test the resolution of the fiber bundle multi-focal microscopic system, we used the USAF 1951 sample which has a smaller line interval than that of the standard grating. The FWHM of the line width of the image coincides well with the real line width of the USAF 1951 sample. We confirmed the performance of a fiber bundle multi-focal microscopic system which is relatively simple but has submicron resolution and is able to get 1600 images at the same time.

Application of Geophysical Survey to the Geological Engineering Model for the Effective Detection in Foundation of Stone Relics (석조문화재 기초지반 파악을 위한 모형지반에서의 탐사기법 적용)

  • To effectively delineate the foundation of stone relics by GPR and seismic refraction methods, a geological engineering model was constructed with alternating layer of soil and gravel to a depth of 3 m. This study was aimed at mapping the boundaries of model ground structure and interfaces of alternating layer using the various frequency antenna in GPR survey and seismic velocities. Compared to the resolution from the high frequency antenna, the image resolution from the survey using 100 Hz antenna is the lower, but with the deeper image coverage. On the contrast, the deeper structure was not mapped in the higher frequency data due to higher absorption effect, but the shallow layered zone was distinctively resolved. Therefore subsurface images were effectively provided by integrating the data with 100 MHz and 450 MHz antennas for the deep and shallow structures, respectively. Regarding the seismic refraction data, the boundaries of the model and interface of the alternating layers were not successfully mapped due to the limit of the survey length. However, the equivalent contours of low velocity extended deep as considerable velocity contrasts with surrounding ground.

Evaluation of Validity Thyroid Scintigraphy Using Parallel Hole Collimator (갑상샘 신티그래피 검사 시 평행다공형 조준기 적용의 유효성 평가)

  • In this study, When acquisition thyroid scintigraphy images, a parallel hole collimator was applied, and the difference from the pinhole collimator was quantitatively analyzed under each image acquisition condition. Visual size, resolution, sensitivity, signal to noise ratio (SNR), and contrast to noise ratio (CNR) were evaluated using thyroid phantom and point source. When comparing visual size, it was confirmed that an image similar to the size of the pinhole collimator could be obtained only when a magnification ratio of about 2.00 to 2.09 times when applying a parallel hole collimator. There was no tendency in FWHM(mm) measurement using a point source, and sensitivity was high in the parallel hole collimator. SNR and CNR were high when using a low magnification ratio, matrix size of 128×128, and a parallel hole collimator. In images of similar size to the naked eye, when the matrix size was the same, both SNR and CNR were high in the pinhole collimator. Therefore, when performing a thyroid scintigraphy test, if appropriate conditions are set according to the situation of each hospital and a parallel hole collimator is applied, it can be a good option in terms of equipment utilization and work efficiency.

Multi-view Generation using High Resolution Stereoscopic Cameras and a Low Resolution Time-of-Flight Camera (고해상도 스테레오 카메라와 저해상도 깊이 카메라를 이용한 다시점 영상 생성)

  • Recently, the virtual view generation method using depth data is employed to support the advanced stereoscopic and auto-stereoscopic displays. Although depth data is invisible to user at 3D video rendering, its accuracy is very important since it determines the quality of generated virtual view image. Many works are related to such depth enhancement exploiting a time-of-flight (TOF) camera. In this paper, we propose a fast 3D scene capturing system using one TOF camera at center and two high-resolution cameras at both sides. Since we need two depth data for both color cameras, we obtain two views' depth data from the center using the 3D warping technique. Holes in warped depth maps are filled by referring to the surrounded background depth values. In order to reduce mismatches of object boundaries between the depth and color images, we used the joint bilateral filter on the warped depth data. Finally, using two color images and depth maps, we generated 10 additional intermediate images. To realize fast capturing system, we implemented the proposed system using multi-threading technique. Experimental results show that the proposed capturing system captured two viewpoints' color and depth videos in real-time and generated 10 additional views at 7 fps.

  • A lava tube is one of the hot issues of lunar science because it is regarded as a good candidate place for setting a lunar base. Recently much effort has been made to find lunar lava tubes. However, preceding works mainly made use of high-resolution lunar surface image data in conjunction with geomorphological consideration to present some lava tube candidates. Yet, those candidates stay no more than indirect indications. We propose a new data analysis technique of High Frequency (HF) radar observation data to find lunar lava tubes of which location depth is smaller than the range resolution of the radar pulse. Such shallow target echoes cannot be resolved from surface echoes, which presents the different location of the lunar surface compared to that of real lunar surface. The proposed technique instead finds the surface range (distance from LRS to the reflector of the most intense signal) anomaly which occurs as a result of the low range resolution of LRS pulse. We applied this technique to the surface range of Kaguya Lunar Radar Sounder (LRS) data. The surface range was deduced to make LRS surface elevation which was compared with the average surface elevation of Kaguya Digital Terrain Model (DTM). An anomalous discrepancy of the surface elevation was found in the Rima Galilaei area, which suggests the existence of a shallow lava tube.

Change of NDVI by Surface Reflectance Based on KOMPSAT-3/3A Images at a Zone Around the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (후쿠시마 제1 원전 주변 지역의 KOMPSAT-3/3A 영상 기반 지표반사도 적용 식생지수 변화)

  • Using multi-temporal KOMPSAT-3/3A high-resolution satellite images, the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) for the area around the Fukushima daiichi nuclear power plant was determined, and the pattern of vegetation changes was analyzed. To calculate the NDVI, surface reflectance from the KOMPSAT-3/3A satellite image was used. Satellite images from four years were used, and the zones where the images overlap was designated as the area of interest (AOI) for the study, and by setting a profile passing through highly vegetated area as a data analysis method, the changes by year were examined. In addition, random points were extracted within the AOI and displayed as a box plot to quantitatively indicate change of NDVI distribution pattern. The main results of this study showed that the NDVI in 2014 was low within AOI in the vicinity of the nuclear power plant, but vegetated area continued to expand until 2021. These results were also confirmed in the change monitoring results shown in a profile or box plot. In disaster areas where access is restricted, such as the Fukushima nuclear power plant area, where it is difficult to collect field data, obtaining land cover classification products with high accuracy using satellite images is challenging, so it is appropriate to analyze them using primary outputs such as vegetation indices obtained from high-resolution satellite imagery. It is necessary to establish an international cooperation system for jointly utilizing satellite images. Meanwhile, to periodically monitor environmental changes in neighboring countries that may affect the Korean peninsula, it is necessary to establish utilization models and systems using high-resolution satellite images.

  • Motion capture system is widely used nowadays in the entertainment industry like movies, computer games and broadcasting. This system consist of several high resolution and high speed CCD cameras and expensive frame grabbing hardware for image acquisition. KAIST VR laboratory focused on low cost system for a few years and have been developed a LAN based optical motion capture system. But, by using low cost system some problems like occlusion, noise and swapping of markers' trajectory can be occurred. And more labor intensive work is needed for post-processing process. In this thesis, we propose a trajectory rectification algorithm by confidence model of markers attached on actor. Confidence model is based on graph structure and consist of linkage, marker and frame confidence. To reduce the manual work in post-processing, we have to reconstruct the marker graph by maximizing the frame confidence.

An Improvement of Efficiently Establishing Topographic Data for Small River using UAV (UAV를 이용한 소하천 지형자료 구축에 관한 효율성 제고)

  • Due to the recent technical development and the enhancement of image resolution, Unmanned Airborne Vehicles(UAVs) have been used for various fields. A low altitude UAV system takes advantage of taking riverbed imagery at small rivers as well as land surface imagery on the ground. The bathymetric data are generated from the low altitude UAV system. The accuracy of the data is analyzed along water depths, comparing GPS observations and a DSM generated from UAV images. It is found that the depth accuracy of the geospatial data below 50 cm depth of water satisfies the regulation(${\pm}10cm$ spatial accuracy) of bathymetric surveying. Therefore this research shows that the geospatial data generated from UAV images at shallow regions of rivers can be used for bathymetric surveying.

Usefullness with 3D CT Angiography in Microsurgical Reconstruction (미세수술을 이용한 하지의 재건시 삼차원 컴퓨터 혈관조영술의 유용성)

  • Preoperative angiography is frequently used in the planning of microsurgical reconstruction for identification of vascular abnormality that influence the planning of operation. But, recently 3D CT angiography is considered as new technique that can provide detailed information about vascular anatomy as well as soft and bony tissue without the risks of invasive angiography. 3D CT angiograms were performed in 19 patients before microsurgical reconstruction for the lower extremity and hand between May of 2003 and Oct of 2004. Sixteen of the studies were of the donor site and all of 19 studies were of the recipient site. No complications were found from the 3D CT angiograms. In one case of the bone exposed open wound, the injury of anterior tibial artery was identified and the zone of injury was adequately demonstrated. With the improvement in quality of CT imaging, 3D CT angiograms may provide a favorable alternative to invasive angiography. It is capable of providing high-resolution, three dimensional vascular imaging without the need for arterial puncture and prolonged post-procedure observation. The relation among blood vessels, bones, and soft tissue is well demonstrated in 3D CT angiogram. Also The acquisition time and examination cost were considerably lower in comparison with invasive angiography. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that 3D CT angiography may provide accurate, safe, and cost-effective preoperative imaging. The 3D CT angiography with relatively low morbidity, low cost, ease of image acquisition can have an broader role in microsurgical reconstructive surgery.

A Development of Effective Object Detection System Using Multi-Device LiDAR Sensor in Vehicle Driving Environment (차량주행 환경에서 다중라이다센서를 이용한 효과적인 검출 시스템 개발)

  • The importance of sensors on a self-driving vehicle has rising since it act as eyes for the vehicle. Lidar sensors based on laser technology tend to yield better image quality with more laser channels, thus, it has higher detection accuracy for obstacles, pedistrians, terrain, and other vechicles. However, incorporating more laser channels results higher unit price more than ten times, and this is a major drawback for using high channel lidar sensors on a vehicle for actual consumer market. To come up with this drawback, we propose a method of integrating multiple low channel, low cost lidar sensors acting as one high channel sensor. The result uses four 16 channels lidar sensors with small form factor acting as one bulky 64 channels sensor, which in turn, improves vehicles cosmetic aspects and helps widespread of using the lidar technology for the market.
