  • Microstrip antennas generally have a lot of advantages that are thin profile, lightweight, low cost, and conformability to a shaped surface application with integrated circuitry. In addition to military applications, they have become attractive candidates in a variety of commercial applications such as mobile satellite communications, the direct broadcast system (DBS), global positioning system (GPS), and remote sensing. Recently, many of the researches have been achieved for improving the impedance bandwidth of microstrip antennas. The basic form of the microstrip antenna, consisting of a conducting patch printed on a grounded substrate, has an impedance bandwidth of $1\~2\%$. For improvement of narrow bandwidth of microstrip patch, we were designed U-slot microstrip patch antenna in this paper. This antenna had wide bandwidth for all personal communication services (PCS) and IMT-2000. For the design of U-slot microstrip patch antenna using a finite difference time domain(FDTD) method. This numerical method could get the frequency property of U-slot patch antenna and the electromagnetic fields of slots.

  • New types of armor, including space armor, multiple-layered armor, composite armor and modular armor have been successfully developed and installed on the armored vehicles of several nations. The protective capability of armor against penetration is established. Of developed composite armor, space armor has a simple structure and is easy to produce and can be produced at low cost. This study uses the finite element package DYTRAN and the pre and post processor PNTRAN to elucidate the ballistic resistance and penetration of space armor. Factors such as armor thickness, space between armors and projectile profile are considered. A technique for simulating the protection afforded by armor and supporting the design of space armor is developed.

  • Computational grids used in the numerical simulation of multi staged turbomachinery flow fields are generated. A multiblock structure simplifies the creation of structured H-grids about complex turbomachinery geometries and facilitate the creation of a grid for multi-row topologies. The numerical algorithm adopts the combination of the algebraic and elliptic method to create the internal grids efficiently and quickly. The input module is made of the results of the preliminary design, i.e., flow-path, aerodynamic conditions along the spanwise direction, and the blade profile data. The final grids generated from each module of the system are used as the preprocessor for the performance prediction of the single row cascades and the flow simulation inside the multi staegd blade passage. Application to low pressure compressor of industrial gas turbine engines was demonstrated to be very reliable and practical in support of design activities.

  • The flyback topology is being widely used in power adapters. The coupling capacitance between primary and secondary windings of a flyback transformer is the main path for common-mode (CM) noise conduction. A Y-cap is usually used to effectively suppress EMI noise. However, this results in problems in space, cost, and the danger of safety leakage current. In this paper, the CM noise behaviors due to the electric field coupling of the transformer windings in a flyback adapter with synchronous rectification are analyzed. Then a scheme with balance winding is proposed to reduce the CM noise with a transformer winding design that eliminates the Y-cap. The planar transformer has advantages in terms of its low profile, good heat dissipation and good stray parameter consistency. Based on the proposed scheme, with the help of a full-wave simulation tool, the key parameter influences of the transformer PCB winding design on CM noise are further analyzed. Finally, a PCB transformer for an 18W adapter is designed and tested to verify the effectiveness of the balance winding scheme.

  • Vibration is a source of performance degradation in all optical imaging systems. Performance of high resolution remote sensing payloads is often limited due to satellite platform vibrations. Effects of Linear and high frequency sinusoidal vibrations on the system MTF are known exactly in closed form but the low frequency vibration effects is a random process and must be considered statistically. Usually the vibration MTF budget is defined based on the mission requirements and the overall MTF limitations. For analyzing low frequency effects, designer must know all the systems specifications and parameters. With a good understanding of harmful vibration frequencies and amplitudes in the system preliminary design phase, their effects could be removed totally or partially. This procedure is cost effective and let the designer to eliminate just harmful vibrations and avoids over-designing. In this paper we have analyzed the effects of low-frequency platform vibrations on the payload's modulation transfer function. We have used a statistical analysis to find the probability of imaging with a MTF equal or greater than a pre-defined budget for different missions. The worst and average cases have been discussed and finally we have proposed "look-up figures". Using these look-up figures, designer can choose the electro-optical parameters in such a way that vibration effects be less than its pre-defined budget. Furthermore, using the results, we can propose a damping profile based on which vibration frequencies and amplitudes must be eliminated to stabilize the payload system.

  • In this paper we analyze the influence of source/drain (S/D) extension region design for minimizing short channel effects (SCEs) in 25 nm gate length single and double gate Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI) and Germanium-on-Insulator (GOI) MOSFETs. A design methodology, by evaluatingm the ratio of the effective channel length to the natural length for the different devices (single or double gate FETs) and technology (SOI or GOI), is proposed to minimize short channel effects (SCEs). The optimization of non-overlapped gate-source/drain i.e. underlap channel architecture is extremely useful to limit the degradation in SCEs caused by the high permittivity channel materials like Germanium as compared to that exhibited in Silicon based devices. Subthreshold slope and Drain Induced Barrier Lowering results show that steeper S/D gradients along with wider spacer regions are needed to suppress SCEs in GOI single/double gate devices as compared to Silicon based MOSFETs. A design criterion is developed to evaluate the minimum spacer width associated with underlap channel design to limit SCEs in SOI/GOI MOSFETs.

  • The mobile device industry demands much higher levels of integration and lower costs coupled with a growing awareness of the complete system's configuration. A subsystem module package is similar to a board-level circuit that integrates a system function in a package beyond a System-in-Package (SiP) design. It is an advanced IC packaging solution to enhance the PDN and achieve a smaller form factor. Unlike a system-level design with a decoupling capacitor, a subsystem module package system needs to redefine the role of the capacitor and its configuration for PDN performance. Specifically, the design of package's form factor should include careful consideration of optimal PDN performance and the number of components, which need to define the decoupling capacitor's value and the placement strategy for a low impedance profile with associated cost benefits. This paper will focus on both the static case that addresses the voltage (IR) drop and AC analysis in the frequency domain with three specific topics. First, it will highlight the role of simulation in the subsystem module design for the PDN. Second, it will compare the performance of double-sided component placement (DSCP) motherboards with the subsystem module package and then prove the advantage of the subsystem module package. Finally, it will introduce three-terminal decoupling capacitor (decap) configurations of capacitor size, count and value for the subsystem module package to determine the optimum performance and package density based on the cost-effective model.

  • Experimental study was conducted to obtain the air velocity profiles in turbulent pipe flow. The acrylic smooth pipe (${\phi}=80mm$) was used for the test section of the flow loop. It was known that the velocity profiles of turbulent flow were different with Reynolds numbers and the viscous sublayer was usually quite thin. The following conclusions were drawn from the experimental investigations. Maximum velocity of the pipe center and flow-rate are useful for the duct design on the spot. The velocity profiles of high Reynolds number was flatter than those of low Reynolds number. It was known that the exponent, n, for power-law velocity profiles was $6{\sim}9$ depending on Reynolds number ranging from $10^4$ to $10^5$ in the turbulent flow, However, in this experiment study, it was $9{\sim}14$ depending on Reynolds number ranging from 17,000 to 123,727 in the turbulent flow, and $1.7{\sim}3.5$ depending on Reynolds number ranging from 2,442 to 4,564 in the transition region.

  • A network-based robot [1] is a robot that explores service servers in the network environment for analyzing sensor data and making decision. Since network-based robot architecture was proposed, it's possible to reduce costs of robots. We hope robots would be all around at home environment. Therefore, normal users who are not experts need to be able to control those robots by using easy commands. We developed a scripting language, named CCSLR, to help users and developers who control various robots in ubiquitous environment. We focused on how to design the common language for various robots and how to translate a CCSLR script into a sequence of low-level commands of the target robot. In this paper, we propose scripting methods, with three layers. The CCSLR system reads the profile information from the knowledge representation database. Users don't have to know all about kinematical and mechanical details of a robot. Then again, the CCSLR system will use the profile information to translate the script into separated executable library commands. The CCSLR system manages robot's changing state every time a robot executes a command.

  • Sixteen Harnai males were used to evaluate the influence of varying levels of fourwing saltbush hay on feed and water intakes as well as the blood serum mineral status in a completely randomized design. The animals were grouped randomly into four, with four animals in each. The four groups were randomly allotted low, medium, high and very high levels of saltbush hay supplementation in addition to wheat straw. The animals were given fresh water at free of choice. Weekly body weight was recorded for each individual animal. Blood serum was collected for mineral contents. The experiment lasted for eight weeks. The inclusion of saltbush leaves in the diet showed a non-significant effect on the total dry matter intake. There has been a significant increase in the water intake when very high levels of saltbush were included in the ration. Lower levels showed no effect on the water intake. The animals maintained their body weight from week 1 to week 8. No treatment by weeks interactions on the potassium and sodium levels were detected. However higher levels of saltbush increased significantly the potassium and sodium contents in the serum. Calcium contents were significantly(p<0.01) lowered with the inclusion of saltbush leaves in the diet. Whereas Phosphorous contents showed an increasing(p<0.05) trend with the higher levels of saltbush. No clinical or sub-clinical toxicological symptoms were observed in the sheep with the higher mineral contents.
