  • The objective of this study is to evaluate the lateral earth pressure and the stability of small scale retaining wall with waste foundry sand(WFS) mixtures as a controlled low strength materials (CLSM). Three different types of WFS, like Green WFS, Hurane WFS and Coated WFS, were used in this study, and fly ash of Class F type was adopted. To evaluate the lateral earth pressure and the stability of retaining wall, two different samll scale retaining wall tests, which are called an artificially controlled strain method and a natural strain method, were carried out. In case of an artificially controlled strain method, the coefficient of lateral earth pressure, just after backfilling of WF mixtures, was around 0.8 to 1.0, and most of earth pressure was dissipated within 12 hours. In case of a natural strain method, two steps of stage constructions were employed. The mixtures of Hurane WFS and Coated WFS showed fast decrease of earth pressure due to a relatively good drainage. Judging from the sta bility of retaining wall for overturning and sliding, two steps of stage construction for 2 days were enough to finish the backfill of 6-m height of retaining wall. Also, considering the curling effect of WFS mixtures, the stability of retaining wall increased as curling time increased.

  • A numerical method and experiments for the aerodynamic design of high performance two-stage axial flow fans was carried out. A vortex ring element method used for the aerodynamic analysis of the propellers was extended to the fan-duct system. Fan Performance and velocity profiles at the fan inlet and outlet are compared with experimental data for the validations of numerical method. Performance test was done based on KS B 6311(testing methods for turbo-fans and blowers). The velocity profile was obtained using a 5-hole pitot tube by the non-nulling method. The two stage axial flow fan configurations for the optimal operation conditions were set by using the experimental results for the single rotating axial flow fan and the single stage axial flow fan. The single rotating axial flow fan showed relatively low efficiency due to the swirl velocities behind rotor exit which produced pressure losses. In contrast, the single stage and the two-stage axial flow fans showed performance improvements due to the swirl velocity reduction by the stator. The peak efficiency of the two stage axial flow fan was improved by 21% and 6%, compared to the single rotating axial flow fan and the single stage axial flow fan, respectively.

  • In this work, direct contact 4-stage fluidized bed heat exchanger is experimentally studied to develop a new type of heat exchanger which recovers the energy contained in the high temperature waste gas exhausted from the industrial furnaces. A sand is used as a heat transfer medium in this experiment. To determine the optimum operating condition, 11 different perforated plates which have a different free area ratio with different hole diameter are used in the experiment. From the room temperature experiment, the pressure drop which is caused by fluidized bed formation is observed. The high temperature experiment is carried out to seek the optimum operating condition of high heat efficiency at low heat exchanger operation cost. The results of experiment are as following. The pressure drop in the high temperature condition can be predicted from the results of the room temperature experiment. And Nusselt number becomes smaller due to the increased interference between sand particles as Reynolds number increases when the dilute phase fluidized beds are formed in nigh temperature condition. But heat transfer amount through the total sand surface area become larger due to the large resident amount of sand. Considering the heat transfer amount and the heat exchanger operation cost, perforated plates which have either a 30% or 35% of free area ratio with 15mm of hole diameter are best fitted for our goal of this work. The values of .phi. which is a dimensionless number representing the absorption heat amount per unit sand rate are in the range from 0.4 to 0.5, when Reynolds number of waste gas ranges from 25-30 with these perforated plates.

  • Objectives : The less invasive stereotactic surgery of hypertensive intracerebral hematoma has been preferred. Many techniques were developed to facilitate aspiration of a dense blood clot in acute stage. Authors describe a method for evacuation of putaminal hematoma via computerized tomography(CT)-aided free-hand stereotactic infusion of urokinase and frequent negative pressure aspiration. Patients and Methods : A total of ten patients with spontaneous putaminal hematoma underwent surgery with negative pressure aspiration in the three-year period. All procedures were performed within 12 hours of insult. A silicone ventricular catheter was inserted into the center of hematoma through a burr hole at the Kocher's point under local anesthesia. In a typical case of putaminal hematoma, the trajectory of catheter was pointed the center of hematoma parallel to sagittal plane vertically and the external auditory meatus posteriorly. Immediately after the first trial of hematoma aspiration low-dose urokinase solution(2,000IU/5ml saline) was administrated through the catheter and drain was clipped for 30 minutes. Subsequently, the partially liquified hematoma was manually aspirated using a 10ml syringe with a negative pressure of less than 2 to 3ml. The procedure was carefully repeated every 1 hour until the hematoma was near totally evacuated. Results : The patients population consisted composed of 4 men and 6 women with a mean age of 61.6 years. All had major neurological deficits preoperatively. The mean hematoma volume was 44.3 ml and hematoma was drained for 20 to 48 hours. No complications such as rebleeding, meningitis, or malplaced catheter were noted. Outcome was moderately disabled in four patients and good recovery in three patients. Conclusion : Although the frequent negative pressure aspiration and low-dose urokinase infusion has the disadvantage of possbility of rebleeding and infection, it is consisdered to be an effective method because it allows a simple, safe, and complete removal of hematoma.

  • This paper describes the blower performance used for single-stage high pressure regenerative blower. The blower considered is widely applied to the field of a fuel cell system, a medical equipment and a sewage treatment plant. Flow rate and rotating frequency of a impeller of the blower are considered as design parameters for the proper operation of the blower. Three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations are introduced to analyze the performance and internal flow of the blower. Relatively good agreement between experimental measurements and numerical simulation is obtained. Throughout a numerical simulation, it is found that small and stable vortical flow generated inside the blade passage is effective to increase pressure and efficiency of the blower. Large local recirculation flow having low velocity in the blade passage obstructs the generation of stable vortical flow, thus increases the pressure loss of the blower. Detailed flow field inside the blower is also analyzed and discussed.

  • This paper highlights the performance of an impulse turbine which is a part of turbopump in a liquid rocket first stage engine. The turbopump, currently under development at Korea Aerospace Research Institute, has an impulse type turbine with 12 nozzles and a single rotor. The impulse turbine can archive high specific power with the low gas flow rates. The supersonic impulse turbine with a single rotor can make a simple structure. High-pressure gases are converted into the dynamic energy with flows through the 12 nozzles and drive the rotor to make the power for the pumps. The turbine test was performed in the high-pressured turbine test facility with air gas instead of burned gas. A hydraulic dynamometer was used to absorb the power from the turbine and control the rotational speed and torque. The test points were at several pressure ratios with 7 different rotational speeds. Results showed the efficiency was highest at the design pressure ratio. The efficiency was insensitive to the pressure ratio variation than the rotational speed. It was a typical characteristic in an impulse turbine.

  • Homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engines have the potential to provide both diesel-like efficiency and very low emissions of nitrogen oxide (NOx) and particulate matter(PM). However, several technical issues still must be resolved before HCCI can see application. Among these, steep pressure-rise rate which leads to narrow operating range of HCCI engine continues to be a major issue. This work investigates the combination of two methods to mitigate the excessive pressure-rise rates at high power output, namely fuel stratification and Cooled exhaust-gas recirculation (Cooled EGR), after identifying the each effects to pressure-rise rate. When applying the fuel stratification to simulation, total fuelling width of 0.15 at BDC is set as a equivalent ratio difference based on the previous research. In order to simulate the effects of cooled EGR, $CO_2$ mole fraction in pre-mixture is changed ranging from 0 to 30%. DME which has a characteristic of two-stage ignition is used as a fuel.

  • For the purpose of high outlet pressure, compactness and low vibration and noise, 2 stage reciprocating air compressors can have various cylinder arrangement: opposed, in-line, and V type. This paper presents an effective method to calculate the inertia forces and to design counter weight. This method is based on the complex representation for the orbital behavior of the compressor shaft. This method helps to find the optimal balancing rate easily to reduce the inertial force or moment. This paper shows that the residual inertia forces of the single throw shafts and the residual inertia moments of the double throw shafts remain to be imbalanced.

  • Modem reciprocating air compressors have tendency to a multi-stage W-type or V-type cylinder arrangement for the purpose of high outlet pressure, compactness and low vibration and noise. A valid counter weight calculation method using the complex expression is proposed for reducing the inertia forces of the compressor. Counter weight removes only 1st forward whirl component. Counter weight formulations are applied to the six various compressor structures which are (a) 1 cylinder single-throw crank shaft, (b) 2 cylinder single-throw crank shaft (c) 2 cylinder double-throw clank shaft, (d) 3 cylinder single-throw crank shaft, (e) 4 cylinder single-throw crank shaft and (f) 4 cylinder double-throw crank shaft. The improvement of performance is verified through available vibration test.

  • The Kamkye Cu-Pb-Zn-Au-Ag deposits occur as quartz veins that filled fault-related fractures of NW system developed in the Cretaceous Gyeongsang basin. Three major stages of mineral deposition are recognized: (1) the stage I associated with wall rock alteration, such as sericite, chlorite, epidote and pyrite, (2) the early stage II of base-metal mineralization such as pyrite, hematite, and small amounts of sphalerite and chalcopyrite. and the middle to late stage II of Cu-As-Sb-Au-Ag-S mineralization, such as sphalerite, chalcopyrite, galena with tetrahedrite, tennantite, pearceite, Pb-Bi-Cu-S system, argentite and electrum. (3) the stage III of supergene mineralization, such as covellite, chalcocite and malachite. K-Ar dating of alteration sericite is a late Cretaceous ($74.0{\pm}1.6Ma$) and it may be associated with granitic activity of nearby biotite granite and quartz porphyry. Fluid inclusion data suggest a complex history of boiling, cooling and dilution of ore fluids. Stage II mineralization occurred at temperatures between 370 to $220^{\circ}C$ from fluids with salinities of 8.4 to 0.9 wt.% NaCl. Early stage II($320^{\circ}C$, 2.0 wt.% NaCl) may be boiled due to repeated fracturing which opened up the hydrothermal system to the land surface, and which resulted in a base-metal sulfide. Whilst the fractures were opened to the surface, mixing of middle-late stage II ore fluids with meteoric waters resulted in deposition of Cu-As-Sb-Au-Ag minerals from low temperature fluids(${\leq}290^{\circ}C$). Boiling of ore fluids may be occured at a pressure of 112 bar and a depth of 412 m. Equilibrium thermodynamic interpretation of sphalerite-tetraherite assemblages in middle stage II indicates that the ore-forming fluid had log fugacities of $S_2$ of -6.6~-9.4 atm.
