  • One short core with length of 146cm(HB-107, at coordinates of $N51^{\circ}$11'37.5";$E100^{\circ}$24'45.6", from 229m water depth was subject of the present study. The sub-samples of the core were analyzed for the water contents (WC%), biogenic silica, identification of the main phases, grain size distribution, geochemistry and some physical properties of sediment(Wet density and Magnetic susceptibility) with aims of recording palaeo-environmental changes in Northem Mongolia. The evaluation of the geochemical and mineralogical proxies on palaeo-climated and palaeo-environmental changes are based on comparison to the behvior of biogenic silica through core, as later one had been showed itself, as good indicator of the climate and environmental fluctuation. Age model of the investigating core based on previously C 14 dated core HB105 taken from the central part of the Hobsgol Lake and the result had been published elsewhere. The core consists of two litological varieties : upper diatomaceous silt, lower clay. According to the age model the upper diatomaceous silt formed during the Holocene, lower caly-during the late Pleistocene glacial period. The geochemistry and phase identification analysis on the core samples are resulted in determining main minerals that form the bottom sediments and their geochemistry. The main include quartz, felspar, muscovite, clinochlore, amphibole and carbonate phase(dolomite and calcite). Through the core not only occur the relative quantitative changes of the main phases, but also happen that the carbonate phase completely disappear in diatomaceous silt. This is believed to be related to the lake water salinity changes, which occurred during the trassition period from Pleistocene glacial-to the Holocene interglacial. These abrupt changes of the mineralogy have been clearly traced in geochemistry of sediments, specially in calcium concentration, which is high in lower clay and low in upper diatomaceous silt. That means, geochemistry and mineralogy of the bottom sediments can be used as proxy data on palaeo-climate and palaeo-environmental changes.

  • The thin film processing and the applicability as a IMD material of SiO2 aerogels providing ultralow dielec-tric properties were studied. The SiO2 aerogel films with 0.5g/㎤ density (78% porosity) and 4000~21000$\AA$ thickness could be prepared at 25$0^{\circ}C$ and 1160 psig by supercritical drying of wet-gel films, which were spin-coated at the spin rate of 1000~7000 rpm on p-Si(111) wafer under the isopropanol atmosphere. The optimum viscosity of polymeric SiO2 sols for spin coating was in the range of 10~14 cP. The main fac-tors being able to control the film thickness and microstructures were found to be sol concentration, spin rpm, and aging time of wet-gel films. The dielectric constant of the SiO2 aerogel thin film was around 2.0 low enough to be applied to the next generation semiconductor device beyond the giga level.

  • Purpose: The characteristics of in-transit vibration stress and possible damage to packaged apples were examined. Methods: A simulated transportation environment with a specific power density profile was used for vibration impact experiments to determine the resulting decrease in packaged apple quality. Apples with or without vibration stress were stored at low temperature ($5{\pm}0.8^{\circ}C$, 75-85% relative humidity) for 30 days. Statistically significant differences (p ${\leq}$ 0.05) were found between apples with and without vibration stress for concentration of oxygen ($O_2$; 11.2% and 14.1%, respectively; initially $29{\pm}0.4%$), carbon dioxide ($CO_2$; 26.4% and 21.8%; initially $1{\pm}0.2%$), and ethylene (79.4 ${\mu}LL^{-1}$ and 55.6 ${\mu}LL^{-1}$; initially $14.1{\pm}0.6{\mu}LL^{-1}$) in the headspace of a gas-collecting container after 30 days of storage. Results: Significant differences were also measured for apples with and without vibration stress with respect to soluble solid content (15.4% and 14.9%, respectively; initially $12.9{\pm}0.8%$ and $13.1{\pm}1.1%$), weight loss (10.1% and 8.2%), and firmness (139.7 kPa and 163.3 kPa; initially $213.8{\pm}6.2$ kPa and $209.1{\pm}7.9$ kPa) after 30 days of storage. Conclusions: The vibration stress clearly accelerated the degradation of apple quality during storage, resulting in increased weight loss, soluble solid content, and headspace $CO_2$ and ethylene production, and decreased firmness and headspace $O_2$.

  • Acyl-CoA: Cholesterol Acyltransferase (ACAT) is a key enzyme responsible for cholesteryl ester formation in atherogenesis and in cholesterol absorption from the intestines. In addition under pathological conditions, formation and accumulation of cholesteryl ester as lipid droplets by ACAT within macrophages constitute a characteristic feature of early lesions of atherosclerotic plaques. ACAT inhibitors are expected to be effective for treatment of atherosclerosis and hypercholesterolemia. ACAT inhibitors of natural origin have been rarely reported. In our screening program for ACAT inhibitors, 303 plants were extracted with methanol or ethanol, and screened for the inhibitory activity against ACAT from the rat liver microsome. Extracts of 13 plants including Quercus aliena, Diospyros kaki, Platycarya strobilacea and Hibiscus syriacus inhibited more than 90% of ACAT activity and 43 samples in alcohol extracts such as Magnolia obovata and Panax ginseng also inhibited more than 70% of ACAT activity at a concentration of $100\;{\mu}g/ml$.

  • Background: Direct impact of inorganic carbon (i.e., carbon dioxide ($CO_2$)) on the periphyton community is important to understand how and to what extent atmospheric conditions can affect the structure and dynamics of these communities in lotic systems. We investigated the influence of elevated $CO_2$ concentration on the periphyton community in the artificially constructed channels during the winter period. The channels made of acrylic paneling were continuously supplied with surface water discharged from a small reservoir, which was supported with ground water, at a flow rate of 5 L/min, and water temperature ranging $4-5^{\circ}C$. The effects of elevated $CO_2$ concentrations (790 ppm) were evaluated in comparison with the control (395 ppm $CO_2$) by analyzing pH, water carbon content and nutrients in water, periphyton composition and biomass, chlorophyll-a, ash-free dry-matter at 2-day intervals for 10 days. Results: After the addition of $CO_2$, significant decreases of pH, $NH_3-N$, and $PO_4-P$ (p < 0.05) and increases of chlorophyll-a, ash-free dry-matter, and the cell density of periphyton (p < 0.01) were observed, whereas the species composition of periphyton and water carbon content did not change. Conclusions: These results suggest that elevated $CO_2$ in flowing water system with low temperature could facilitate the growth of periphyton resulting in biomass increase, which could further influence water quality and the consumers throughout the food web.

  • The back contact solar cell (BCSC) has several advantages compared to the conventional solar cell since it can reduce grid shadowing loss and contact resistance between the electrode and the silicon substrate. This paper presents the effect of the surface texturing of the silicon BCSC by varying the texturing depth or the texturing gap in the commercially available simulation software, ATHENA and ATLAS of the company SILVACO. The texturing depth was varied from $5{\mu}m$ to $150{\mu}m$ and the texturing gap was varied from $1{\mu}m$ to $100{\mu}m$ in the simulation. The resulting efficiency of the silicon BCSC was evaluated depending on the texturing condition. The quantum efficiency and the I-V curve of the designed silicon BCSC was also obtained for the analysis since they are closely related with the solar cell efficiency. Other parameters of the simulated silicon BCSC are as follows. The substrate was an n-type silicon, which was doped with phosphorous at $6{\times}10^{15}cm^{-3}$, and its thickness was $180{\mu}m$, a typical thickness of commercial solar cell substrate thickness. The back surface field (BSF) was $1{\times}10^{20}\;cm^{-3}$ and the doping concentration of a boron doped emitter was $8.5{\times}10^{19}\;cm^{-3}$. The pitch of the silicon BCSC was $1250{\mu}m$ and the anti-reflection coating (ARC) SiN thickness was $0.079{\mu}m$. It was assumed that the texturing was anisotropic etching of crystalline silicon, resulting in texturing angle of 54.7 degrees. The best efficiency was 25.6264% when texturing depth was $50{\mu}m$ with zero texturing gap in case of low texturing depth (< $100{\mu}m$).

  • This study analyzed a 3D hydrodynamic advection diffusion using the EFDC model (Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code) in the agriculture lake to prevent stratification when we install a water circulator. EFDC model was predicted the range of the water circulator and various operational parameters ware derived for minimize the impact of the internal lake. Through EFDC simulation, water circulation is started overall circulation after 30days and a lake overall circulation showed that it was possible operated the water circulator after about 100days. Also, advection diffusion concentration was low in a lake when water circulator operate intermittent condition than continuous condition. And the entire circulation was stable in this condition. The S/B (Surface/Bottom) ratio can reduce the impact of lake as the surface water mixing a lot of. When the same condition (S/B ratio(3:1)), Case 8 (50days operation: 50days stop) of condition were able to minimize the impact of lake.

  • In this study, the characteristics of emulsified fuel and engine emissions were studied with engine dynamometer. Microexplosion took place in the combustion chamber. While combustion, emulsion fuel scattered to micro particles and it caused to smoke reduction. The heat produced from water vapour reduce the temperature of internal combustion chamber and it caused to inhibition of NOx production. It can be verified by the lower exhaust temperature of each ND-13 mode using emulsion fuel than that of MDO fuel. The NOx and smoke concentration were reduced by increasing water content in emulsion fuel. The power also decreased according to the increment of water content of emulsion fuel because emulsion fuel has low calorific value due to high water content than MDO. As a result of ND-13 mode test with 17% moisture content, it was achieved 24% reduction in NOx production, 76% reduction in smoke density, 11% reduction of $SO_2$ and 13% reduction in power loss.

  • Folate deficiency and hyperhomocysteinemia are found in most patients with alcoholic liver disease. Oxidative stress is one of the most important mechanisms contributing to homocysteine (Hcy)-induced tissue injury. However it has not been examined whether exogenous administration of folic acid attenuates oxidative stress and hepatic toxicity. The aim of this study was to investigate the in vivo effect of folic acid supplementation on oxidative stress and hepatic toxicity induced by chronic ethanol consumption. Wistar rats (n = 32) were divided into four groups and fed 0%, 12%, 36% ethanol, or 36% ethanol plus folic acid (10 mg folic acid/L) diets. After 5 weeks, chronic consumption of the 36% ethanol diet significantly increased plasma alanine transaminase (ALT) (P < 0.05) and aspartate transaminase (AST) (P < 0.05), triglycerides (TG) (P < 0.05), Hcy (P < 0.001), and low density lipoprotein conjugated dienes (CD) (P < 0.05) but decreased total radical-trapping antioxidant potential (TRAP) (P < 0.001). These changes were prevented partially by folic acid supplementation. The 12% ethanol diet had no apparent effect on most parameters. Plasma Hcy concentration was well correlated with plasma ALT (r = $0.612^{**}$), AST (r = $0.652^*$), CD (r = $0.495^*$), and TRAP (r = $-0.486^*$). The results indicate that moderately elevated Hcy is associated with increased oxidative stress and liver injury in alcohol-fed rats, and suggests that folic acid supplementation appears to attenuate hepatic toxicity induced by chronic ethanol consumption possibly by decreasing oxidative stress.

  • Coptis chinensis extract and grapefruit seed extract, natural antimicrobial substances, were applied to the dipping treatment of strawberry and incorporated in the packaging films. Strawberry was steeped in the extract solutions of 50 ppm concentration and packed with the low density polyethylene(LDPE) films incorporated with 1% extracts. During the storage at 5$^{\circ}C$, the qualities of microbial counts, awぶy ratio, texture and chemical attributes were measured for the pretreated strawberry. The LDPE films incorporated with the extracts retarded the growth of aerobic bacteria, lactic acid bacteria and yeast that had been contaminated before the pretreatment, significantly lowed the decay ratio, and gave better retention of textural firmness. The chemical and physical qualities of strawberry were not affected by the packaging films. When strawberry was steeped in the extract solutions, the effects of the packaging film incorporated with the extracts on the qualities of strawberry were accelerated.
