Path Loss Exponent Estimation for Indoor Wireless Sensor Positioning

  • Rapid developments in wireless sensor networks have extended many applications, hence, many studies have developed wireless sensor network positioning systems for indoor environments. Among those systems, the Global Position System (GPS) is unsuitable for indoor environments due to Line-Of-Sight (LOS) limitations, while the wireless sensor network is more suitable, given its advantages of low cost, easy installation, and low energy consumption. Due to the complex settings of indoor environments and the high demands for precision, the implementation of an indoor positioning system is difficult to construct. This study adopts a low-cost positioning method that does not require additional hardware, and uses the received signal strength (RSS) values from the receiver node to estimate the distance between the test objects. Since many objects in indoor environments would attenuate the radio signals and cause errors in estimation distances, knowing the path loss exponent (PLE) in an environment is crucial. However, most studies preset a fixed PLE, and then substitute it into a radio propagation loss model to estimate the distance between the test points; such method would lead to serious errors. To address this problem, this study proposes a Path Loss Exponent Estimation Algorithm, which uses only four beacon nodes to construct a radio propagation loss model for an indoor environment, and is able to provide enhanced positioning precision, accurate positioning services, low cost, and high efficiency.

고속반도체 메모리를 위한 DBI(Data Bus Inversion)를 이용한 저비용 CRC(Cyclic Redundancy Check)방식 (Low-Cost CRC Scheme by Using DBI(Data Bus Inversion) for High Speed Semiconductor Memory)

  • 고속동작을 위한 반도체 메모리 제품에서 데이터의 신뢰도를 개선하기 위해 CRC(Cyclic Redundancy Check) 기능이 내장되었으며, 데이터전송 속도 개선을 위해 DBI(Data Bus Inversion) 기능이 내장되었다. DDR4, GDDR4 등의 제품에 추가된 기존의 ATM-8 HEC 코드 방식은 부가회로 면적이 크고(~XOR 700 gates) CRC 처리 시간이 길어서(XOR 6단), 저전력 메모리 제품의 데이터 읽기, 쓰기시 내부 동작 마진(margin)에 적지 않은 부담을 초래한다. 본 논문에서는 저비용, 고속 반도체 메모리에 적합한 CRC방식을 제안하였으며 92%의 부가회로가 개선되었다. 제안한 CRC방식의 저비용 구현을 위해 DBI 기능을 이용하여 데이터 비트 오류 검출율을 보완하였으며, 오류 검출율을 분석하여 기존의 CRC방식과 비교하였다.

  • IEEE 802.15.4는 물리 계층(PHY)과 매체 접근 계층(MAC)을 정의하는 표준으로서, 저속도 무선 개인 통신망(Low Rate Wireless Personal Area Networks, LR-WPANs)을 위한 표준 중 하나이다. IEEE 802.15.4 프로토콜은 장치간의 저가격, 저속도 유비쿼터스 통신을 지향하기 때문에 PHY/MAC의 구현에 있어서 고도화된 최적화가 중요한 요구사항이라 할 수 있다. 최근 IEEE 802.15.4 MAC 프로토콜의 성능 분석에 대한 많은 연구가 진행되었으며, 이를 반영하여 송수신기는 가격 및 성능의 장점이 있는 SoC로 구현되는 추세이다. 이러한 구현 과정에서 CSMA-CA 및 MAC 프레임의 처리와 같은 표준에서 명시한 MAC의 세부 기능들은 성능의 향상을 위해 하드웨어 지향의 Low-MAC과 이를 이용한 소프트웨어 기반의 상위 MAC으로 구현된다. 본 논문은 IEEE 802.15.4 LR-WPAN의 물리계층과 매체 접근 계층 간의 최적화를 위해 Hardwired Low-MAC (HL-MAC)과 상태 기계 (State Machine)를 통해 작은 코드 사이즈와 향상된 에너지 효율을 갖는 최적화 프로토콜을 구현방법을 제안하고자 한다.

Cost-Effectiveness Analysis of HPV Vaccination: Comparing the General Population with Socially Vulnerable Individuals

  • Background: After the WHO recommended HPV vaccination of the general population in 2009, government support of HPV vaccination programs was increased in many countries. However, this policy was not implemented in Korea due to perceived low cost-effectiveness. Thus, the aim of this study was to analyze the cost-utility of HPV vaccination programs targeted to high risk populations as compared to vaccination programs for the general population. Materials and Methods: Each study population was set to 100,000 people in a simulation study to determine the incremental cost-utility ratio (ICUR), then standard prevalence rates, cost, vaccination rates, vaccine efficacy, and the Quality-Adjusted Life-Years (QALYs) were applied to the analysis. In addition, sensitivity analysis was performed by assuming discounted vaccination cost. Results: In the socially vulnerable population, QALYs gained through HPV vaccination were higher than that of the general population (General population: 1,019, Socially vulnerable population: 5,582). The results of ICUR showed that the cost of HPV vaccination was higher for the general population than the socially vulnerable population. (General population: 52,279,255 KRW, Socially vulnerable population: 9,547,347 KRW). Compared with 24 million KRW/QALYs as the social threshold, vaccination of the general population was not cost-effective. In contrast, vaccination of the socially vulnerable population was strongly cost-effective. Conclusions: The results suggest the importance and necessity of government support of HPV vaccination programs targeted to socially vulnerable populations because a targeted approach is much more cost-effective. The implementation of government support for such vaccination programs is a critical strategy for decreasing the burden of HPV infection in Korea.

Translating Evidence into Practice in Low Resource Settings: Cervical Cancer Screening Tests are Only Part of the Solution in Rural India

  • Background: The majority of women in rural India have poor or no access to cervical cancer screening services, although one.quarter of all cervical cancers in the world occur there. Several large trials have proven the efficacy of low-tech cervical cancer screening methods in the Indian context but none have documented the necessary components and processes of implementing this evidence in a low-resource setting. Methods: This paper discusses a feasible model of implementation of cervical cancer screening programme in low-resource settings developed through a pilot research project carried out in rural Tamilnadu, India. The programme used visual inspection of cervix after acetic acid application (VIA) as a screening tool, nurses in the primary care centres as the primary screeners and peer educators within Self-Help Women groups to raise community awareness. Results: The uptake of screening was initially low despite the access to a screening programme. However, the programme witnessed an incremental increase in the number of women accessing screening with increasing community awareness. Conclusions: The investigators recommend 4 key components to programme implementation in low-resource setting: 1) Evidence-based, cost-effective test and treatment available within the reach of the community; 2) Appropriate referral pathways; 3) Skilled health workers and necessary equipment; and 4) Optimisation of health literacy, beliefs, attitudes of the community.

무선센서 네트워크를 위한 효율적인 키 관리 연구 (An Efficient Key management for Wireless Sensor Network)

  • 최근 소형화, 저가격, 저전력 기술의 발달에 힘입어 무선 통신이 가능한 스마트 센서 기술이 발전하고 있다. 특히 스마트 센서의 소형화 기술인 MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical system) 및 NEMS(nano-electro mechanical system) 기반의 센서 기술을 바탕으로 무선 센서 네트워크에 대한 연구가 활발하게 진행되고 있다. 그러나 무선 센서 네트워크는 각종 물리적 자원에 대한 제약이 심하기 때문에 네트워크 보안을 유지하기 어렵다. 본 논문에서는 무선 센서 네트워크 환경에서 제한된 자원으로 안전한 키 확립하는 방법과 센싱된 정보의 암호화를 위해 사용할 수 있는 키 관리 메커니즘 및 키 관리 프로토콜, 보안 기술을 위한 제안한다.

소프트웨어 온-디멘드 방식의 멀티테넌트 환경을 지원하는 스마트 도서관시스템 설계 및 구현 (Design and Implementation of Smart Library System for Multi-tenant Environment Using Software on-demand)

  • 대부분 도서관시스템 서비스 제공은 ASP 또는 Client/Server 방식으로 제공함으로써 하드웨어 및 소프트웨어 라이센스의 고비용, 설치 및 배포, 구매비, Upgrade, Customization, 문제점 관리 등 소프트웨어 전반에 걸쳐 고비용과 관리가 힘든 문제점이 있다. 이러한 문제점을 해결하기 위해 제안된 멀티테넌트 환경을 지원하는 스마트도서관시스템에서는 간편하며, 쉽고, 초기 투자비용이 거의 없고, 저비용 IT 서비스가 가능한 소프트웨어 온-디멘드 방식으로 구현하였다.

  • Accurate and efficient monitoring of dynamically changing environments is one of the most important requirements for ubiquitous network environments. Ubiquitous computing provides intelligent environments which are aware of spatial conditions and can provide timely and useful information to users or devices. Also, the growth of embedded systems and wireless communication technology has made it possible for sensor network environments to develop on a large scale and at low-cost. In this paper, we present the design and implementation of a monitoring system that collects, analyzes, and controls the status information of each sensor, following sensor data extracted from each sensor node. The monitoring system adopts Web technology for the implementation of a simple but efficient user interface that allows an operator to visualize any of the processes, elements, or related information in a convenient graphic form.

Rapid Implementation of the MAC and Interface Circuits fot the Wireless LAN Cards Using FPGA

  • This paper studies the rapid design and implementation of the medium access control(MAC) and related interface circuits for 802.11 wireless LANs based on the field programmed gate ar-ray(FPGA) technology. Our design is thus aimed to support both the distributed coordination function (DCF) and the point coordination function(PCF) with the aid of FPGA technology. Further-more, in an infrastructure network, some stations may serve as the access points (APs) which may function like a learning bridge. This paper will also discuss how to design for such application. The hardware of the MAC and interface may at least consist of three major parts: wireless transmission and reception processes and in-terface, host(bus) interface, and the interface to the distributed system (optional). Through the increasing popularity of FPGA de-sign, this paper presents how Complex Programmable Logic De-vices(CPLD) can be utilized for speedy design of prototypes. It also demonstrates that there is much room for low-cost hardware prototype design to accelerate the processing speed of the MAC control function and for field testing.

  • This study considers the implementation issues of the inter-vehicle communication system for the vehicle platoon experiments via a testbed. The testbed, which consists of three scale vehicles and one RCS(remote control station), is developed as a tool for functions evaluation between simulation studies and full-sized vehicle researches in the previous study. The cooperative communication of the vehicle-to-vehicle or the vehicle-to-roadside plays a key role for keeping the relative spacing of vehicles small in a vehicle platoon. The static platoon control, where the number of vehicles remains constant, is sufficient for the information to be transmitted in the suitably fixed interval, while the dynamic platoon control such as merge or split requires more flexible network architecture for the dynamical coordination of the communication sequence. In this study, the wireless communication device and the reliable protocol of the flexible network architecture are implemented for our testbed, using the low-cost, ISM band transceiver and the 8-bit microcontroller.
