  • Grain-oriented electrical steel sheets are mainly used as core materials for transformers and motors. They should have excellent magnetic properties such as low core loss, high magnetic flux density and high permeability. In order to improve the magnetic properties of the electrical steel sheet, it is important to form Goss oriented grains with a very strong {110}<001> orientation. Recently, efforts have been made to develop Goss grains by controlling processes such as hot rolling, cold rolling, and primary and secondary recrystallization. In this study, the sheets containing 3.2 and 3.4wt.% Si were used, which were rolled with 1 and 10 passes with total thickness reduction of 89%. Heating was carried out for primary recrystallization with different heating rates of $25^{\circ}C/s$ and $24^{\circ}C/min$ until $720^{\circ}C$. The behavior of Goss-, {411}<148>-, and {111}<112>-oriented grains were analyzed using X-ray diffraction(XRD) and electron back-scatter diffraction(EBSD) analysis. The area fraction of Goss-oriented grains increased with the number of rolling passes during cold rolling; however, after the primary recrystallization, the area fraction of the Goss grains was higher and exact Goss grains were found in the specimens subjected to rapid heating after one rolling pass.

  • Stainless steel is used commonly in nuclear applications for shielding radiation, so in this study, three different types of new stainless steel samples were designed and developed. New stainless steel compound ratios were determined by using Monte Carlo Simulation program Geant 4 code. In the sample production, iron (Fe), nickel (Ni), chromium (Cr), silicium (Si), sulphur (S), carbon (C), molybdenum (Mo), manganese (Mn), wolfram (W), rhenium (Re), titanium (Ti) and vanadium (V), powder materials were used with powder metallurgy method. Total macroscopic cross sections, mean free path and transmission number were calculated for the fast neutron radiation shielding by using (Geant 4) code. In addition to neutron shielding, the gamma absorption parameters such as mass attenuation coefficients (MACs) and half value layer (HVL) were calculated using Win-XCOM software. Sulfuric acid abrasion and compressive strength tests were carried out and all samples showed good resistance to acid wear and pressure force. The neutron equivalent dose was measured using an average 4.5 MeV energy fast neutron source. Results were compared to 316LN type stainless steel, which commonly used in shielding radiation. New stainless steel samples were found to absorb neutron better than 316LN stainless steel at both low and high temperatures.

  • The present study is aimed at developing the TRIP(transformation induced plasticity) aided high strength low carbon steel using reversion process. An excellent combination of elongation over 40% and tensile strength abut 100kgf/$\textrm{mm}^2$ achieved in processing of 0.15C-0.5 Si-6Mn steel by slow heating to intercritial temperature region and accelerated cooling into room temperature. This good combination is caused by TRIP phenomena of retained austenite in steels during deformation. The stability of retained austenite is very important for the good ductility and it depends on the diffusion of carbon and manganeses during heat treatment. The accelerated cooling after holding at annealing temperature retards the formation of pearlite and provides the carbon enrichment in retained austenite in steel, resulting in the increase in elongation of the cold-rolled TRIP steel. On the other hand, heat treating the steel at 600$^{\circ}C$ for 5 hour before cold rolling increases elongation but reduces the amount of retained austenite after reversion processing. It is accounted that the heat treating is effective for the increase in the stability of retained austenite.

  • The structural control of Al-Si alloy, which was not studied among various electromagnetic processing of materials, was considered applying the alternating current and direct current magnetic flux density. The main aim of the present study is to investigate the effects of electromagnetic vibration on the macro and microstructure of Al-Si alloy in order to develop a new process of structural control in Al-Si alloy. When the electromagnetic vibration is conducted for changing the shape of primary aluminum, at low frequency(>60Hz), the shape of dendrite is changed speroidal shape. When the electromagnetic vibration is conducted for changing the shape of eutectic silicon, the fact that a morphological change of the eutectic silicon from coarse platelet flakes to fine fiber shape is observed and the improvement of the mechanical properties is achieved with EMV (Electro Magnetic Vibration) process at high frequency(>500Hz).

  • Many components in the assembly section of Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor are made of good corrosionresistant 316 LN Stainless Steel material. To avoid self-welding of the components with the coolant sodium at elevated temperature, hardfacing is inevitable. Ni-based colmonoy-5 is used for hardfacing due to its lower dose rate by Plasma Transferred Arc process due to its low dilution. Since Ni-Cr-B-Si alloy becomes very fluidic while depositing, the major height of the weld overlay rests inside the groove. Hardfacing is also done over the plain surface where grooving is not possible. Therefore, grooved and ungrooved hardfaced specimens were prepared at different travel speeds. Fe content at every 100 ㎛ of the weld overlay was studied by Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy and also the micro hardness was determined at those locations. A correlation between iron dilution from the base metal and the micro hardness was established. Therefore, if the Fe content of the weld overlay is known, the hardness at that location can be obtained using the correlation and vice-versa. A new correlation between micro hardness and dilution coefficient is obtained at different locations. A comparative study between those specimens is carried out to recommend the optimum travel speed for lower dilution.

  • An experimental study was performed to discover the effect of environment on the tribological behavior of Si-incorporated diamond-like carbon(Si-DLC) film slid on a steel ball. The films were deposited on Si(100) wafers from radio-frequency glow discharge of mixtures of benzene and dilute silane gases. Experiments using a ball-on-disk test-rig was performed under vacuum, dry air and ambient air conditions. It was observed that coefficient of friction was decreased as the environmental condition changes from vacuum, to dry air. It was also observed that the coefficient of friction decreased with increasing silicon concentration in the film. Chemical analyses of debris suggested that the low and stable friction coefficient is closely related to the silicon rich oxide debris and the rolling action.

  • In this study, the effect of Nb contents and processing parameters on dynamic recrystallization behaviour of 0.15C-0.2Si-0.5Mn low-carbon steels was investigated. Three kinds of steel specimens with different Nb contents were fabricated and then high-temperature compressive deformation test was conducted by varying reheating temperature (RT), deformation temperature (DT), and strain rate (SR). The Nb2 and Nb4 specimens containing Nb had smaller prior austenite grain size than the Nb0 specimens, presumably due to pinning effect by the formation of carbides and carbonitrides precipitates at austenite grain boundaries. The high-temperature compressive deformation test results showed that dynamic recrystallization behavior was suppressed in the specimens containing Nb as the strain rate increased and deformation temperature decreased because of pinning effect by precipitates, grain boundary dragging effects by solute atoms, although the compressive stress increased with increasing strain rate and decreasing deformation temperature.

  • This study was aimed to evaluate the weldability and optimize the welding conditions for flash butt welding of 780MPa grade steel applied to the automotive bumper reinforcement. And then the relationship between the welding conditions and the joint performance relating specifically to coil-joining steel would be established. The effect of welding conditions between flashing and upsetting process was elucidated. Microstructure observation of the joint indicated that the decarburized band was mainly changed with upsetting process. Width of HAZ was also related to the upsetting conditions rather than the flashing conditions. Generally maximum hardness at HAZ was correlated with $C_{eq}$ of steel and the empirical relationship was obtained to estimate the HAZ properties. Tensile elongation at the joint was usually decreased with increasing the initial clamping distance. Investigation of fracture surface after tensile and bending tests reveal that the origin of cracking at the joint was oxide inclusions composed of $SiO_2$, MnO, $Al_2$ $O_3$, and/or FeO. The amount of inclusions was dependent on the composition ratio of Mn/Si in steel. If this ratio was above 4, the amount of inclusions was low and then the resistance to cracking at the joint was enough to maintain the joint performance. It was obtained that the flashing process influenced the conditions for the energy input to establish uniform or non-uniform molten layer, while the upsetting conditions influenced the joint strength. Heat input variable during flashing process was also discussed with the joint properties.

  • Friction and wear tests were conducted with several different ceramics sliding against ceramic and metal couples with and without lubricant in a two disk type sliding machine. The purpose was to know the tribological properties of ceramics. With very different physical and chemical properties of ceramics compared to metal, the tribological properties of ceramics should be defined in detail. Among them, the wear and friction with same or different couple is very important. Also the lubrication of ceramic is one of the major area to be studied. From this research, SiC, SI$_{3}$N$_{4}$ and ZrO$_{2}$ were slid against SiC, AISI 4340 and bronze under various sliding condition. It was found that the friction and wear of ceramics are strongly dependent on the sliding condition. For unlubricated sliding against SiC, ZrO$_{2}$ shows low wear and friction coefficient over wide lange of load, but with lubricated sliding, SiC shows better performance whatever lubricants were used. Also the effect of lubricant depended upon the material properties of sliding pairs. The general tribological properties of ceramics were not correlated with chattering and noise at low load but it could be reduced or avoided effectively by using lubricants. SiC and Si$_{3}$N$_{4}$ slid against SiC have transition from mild to severe wear at high load but ZrO$_{2}$-SiC and SiC-steel have not. Wear debris formed on the contact area of SiC couples was main cause of the initiation of transition. At high speed, only ZrO$_{2}$ sliding against SiC has transition of wear by low thermal conductivity.
