Aerodynamic influence coefficient linearly relates pressure with downwash in panel method for load analysis in which the viscosity of a flow is ignored and the compressibility cannot be taken into account in transonic region. Since the planform of an aerodynamic surface determines the coefficient, the panel method has a limit to the analysis of low Reynolds number flow. The accuracy of the pressure distribution can be improved by a direct correction to the pressure or a correction to the downwash, which is considered the change of camber or thickness, using the aerodynamic coefficients from wind tunnel test as constraints. A premultiplying correction method as well as a postmultiplying correction method is applied to a micro air vehicle to provide more accurate aerodynamic pressure for trim and load analyses. Theoretical aerodynamic pressure is obtained from the panel method. Correction factor matrix and correct pressure coefficient are computed for the conditions with two constraints in addition to single constraint. The postmultiplying correction method gives a better improvement in pressure distribution on micro air vehicle due to the flow characteristics on it.

This paper presents results of an experimental investigation of vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of a flexibly mounted and rigid cylinder with two-degrees-of-freedom with respect to varying ratio of in-line natural frequency to cross-flow natural frequency, $f^*$, at a fixed low mass ratio. Combined in-line and cross-flow motion was observed in a sub-critical Reynolds number range. Three-dimensional displacement meter and tension meter were used to measure dynamic responses of the model. To validate the results and the experiment system, x and y response amplitudes and ratio of oscillation frequency to cross-flow natural frequency were compared with other experimental results. It has been found that the higher harmonics, such as third and more vibration components, can occur on a certain part of steel catenary riser under a condition of dual resonance mode. In the present work, however, due to the limitation of a size of circulating water channel, the whole test of a whole configuration of the riser at an adequate scale for VIV phenomenon was not able to be conducted. Instead, we have modeled a rigid cylinder and assumed that the cylinder is a part of steel catenary riser where the higher harmonic motions could occur. Through the experiment, we have found that even though the cylinder was assumed to be rigid, the occurrence of the higher harmonic motions was observed in a small reduced velocity ($V_r$) range, where the influence of the in-line response is relatively large. The transition of the vortex shedding mode from one to another was examined by using time history of x and y directional displacement over all experimental cases. We also observed the influence of in-line restoring force power spectral density with $f^*$.

The present study investigates the convective heat/mass transfer characteristics in wavy ducts of a primary surface heat exchanger. The effects of duct aspect ratio and flow velocity on the heat/mass transfer are investigated. Local heat/mass transfer coefficients on the corrugated duct sidewall are determined using a naphthalene sublimation technique. The aspect ratios of the wavy duct are 7.3, 4.7 and 1.8 with the corrugation angle of $145\Omega$. The Reynolds numbers, based on the duct hydraulic diameter, vary from 300 to 3,000. The results show that at the low Re(Re $\leq$ 1000) the secondary vortices called Taylor-Gortler vortices perpendicular to the main flow direction are generated due to effect of duct curvature. By these secondary vortices, non-uniform heat/mass transfer coefficients distributions appear. As the aspect ratio decreases, the number of cells formed by secondary vortices are reduced and secondary vortices and comer vortices mix due to decreased aspect ratio at Re$\leq$1000. At Re >1000, the effects of corner vortices become stronger. The average Sh for the aspect ratio of 7.3 and 4.7 are almost same. But at the small aspect ratio of 1.8, the average Sh decreases due to decreased aspect ratio. More pumping power (pressure loss) is required for the larger aspect ratio due to the higher flow instability.

Numerical characteristics of implicit upwind schemes, such as upwind ADI, line Gauss-Seidel (LGS) and point Gauss-Seidel (LU) algorithms, for Navier-Stokes equations have been investigated. Time-derivative preconditioning method was applied for efficient convergence at low Mach/Reynolds number regime as well as at large grid aspect ratios. All the algorithms were expressed in approximate factorization form and von Neumann stability analysis was performed to identify stability characteristics of the above algorithms in the presence of high grid aspect ratios. Stability analysis showed that for high aspect ratio computations, the ADI and LGS algorithms showed efficient damping effect up to moderate aspect ratio if we adopt viscous preconditioning based on min-CFL/max-VNN time-step definition. The LU algorithm, on the other hand, showed serious deterioration in stability characteristics as the grid aspect ratio increases. Computations for several practical applications also verified these results.

The objective of the present study is to predict the film cooling effectiveness by a row of holes at various injection ratios and injection angles. Numerical calculations have been performed to investigate the characteristics of flow and temperature distributions in a region near the down-stream of injection hole including the region of adverse pressure gradient. The elliptic turbulent 3-dimensional governing equations with variable thermal properties using the low-Reynolds number k-$\bar{varepsilon}$ model was solved by SIMPLE algorithm. The results showed that the presence of adverse pressure gradient and secondary vortex in the region near the downstream of injection hole induces large temperature gradent. The $45^{\circ}$ injection has higher averaged film cooling effectiveness than $60^{\circ}$ injection. But neverthless the $90^{\circ}$ injection has greater deviation from a flat plate than $45^{\circ}$ and $60^{\circ}$ injection, the $90^{\circ}$ injection has higher averaged film cooling effectiveness than $45^{\circ}$ and $60^{\circ}$ injection in the region near the downstream of injection hole.
Two perforated plates are placed in parallel and staggered arrangements with a gap distance of 2 times of the hole diameter, and initial crossflow passes between the plates. Both the injection and effusion hole diameters are 10 mm, and the Reynolds number based on the hole diameter and hole-to-hole pitch are fixed to 10,000 and 6 times of the hole diameter, respectively. To investigate the effect of crossflow, the flow rate of crossflow is changed from 0.2 to 2 times of that of the impinging jet. A naphthalene sublimation method is used to determine the local heat/mass transfer coefficients on the upward facing surface of the effusion plate. With the initial crossflow, the heat/mass transfer rates on the effusion (target) plate decrease as the velocity of crossflow increases, since the crossflow induces the locally low transfer regions formed at the mid-way between the effusion holes. However, the impingement/effusion cooling with crossflow presents higher heat/mass transfer rates than the array jet impingement cooling with the same initial crossflow.

The flow in a microchannel is usually characterized as a low Reynolds number (Re) so that good mixing is quite difficult to be achieved. In this regard, we developed a novel chaotic micromixer, named Barrier Embedded Kenics Micromixer (BEKM). In the BEKM, the higher level of chaotic mixing can be achieved by combining two general chaotic mixing mechanisms: (i) splitting/reorientation by helical elements inside the microchannel and (ii) stretching/folding via periodically located barriers on the channel wall. The fully three-dimensional geometry of BEKM was realized by a micro-stereolithography technology, in this study, along with a Kenics micromixer and a circular T-pipe. Mixing performances of three micromixers were experimentally characterized in terms of an average mixing color intensity of phenolphthalein. Experimental results show that BEKM has better mixing performance than other two micromixers. Chaotic mixing mechanism, proposed in this study, could be integrated as a mixing component with Micro-Total-Analysis-System, Lab-on-a-chip and so on.

Heat transfer performance improvement by fin and groovs is studied for condensation of R-11 on integral-fin tubes. Eight tubes with trapczodially shaped integral-fins having fin density from 748 to 1654fpm(fin per meter) and 10, 30 grooves are tested. A plain tube having the same diameter as the finned tubes is also used for comparison. R-11 condensates at saturation state of 32 $^{\circ}C$ on the outside tube surface coded by inside water flow. All of test data are taken at steady state. The heat transfer loop is used for testing singe long tubes and cooling is pumped from a storage tank through filters and folwmeters to the horizontal test section where it is heated by steam condensing on the outside of the tubes. The pressure drop across the test section is measured by menas pressure gauge and manometer. The results obtained in this study is as follows : 1. Based on inside diameter and nominal inside area, overall heat transfer coefficients of finned tube are enhanced up to 1.6 ~ 3.7 times that of a plain tube at a constant Reynolds number. 2. Friction factors are up to 1.6 ~ 2.1 times those of plain tubes. 3. The constant pumping power ratio for the low integral-fin tubes increase directly with the effective area to the nominal area ratio, and with the effective area diameter ratio. 4. A tube having a fin density of 1299fpm and 30 grooves has the best heat transfer performance.

A Computational study was carried out in order to investigate the aerodynamic characteristics of circular cylinder moving near the wavy wall at a low Reynolds number of 50. Lattice Boltzmann method was used to simulate the flow field and immersed boundary method was combined to represent the moving cylinder and wavy wall regardless of the constructed grid in the domain. The aerodynamics characteristics of the cylinder moving near the wavy wall were represented by the comparing the lifting coefficients with various altitudes (H/D) and wave length and amplitudes of wavy wall. It indicated that the twice of increasing-decreasing variations of lifting coefficient are obtained while the cylinder moves near the wavy wall. The first variation is obtained where the cylinder locates near the peak of the wavy wall. Another variation occurs when the distance to the wavy wall becomes longer after passing the peak. It was also classified that three different patterns of relation between the lifting and drag coefficient of the cylinder. However, the classification is limited to the case of the same order of altitude, amplitude and wave length of the wavy wall.

Wind power is one of the most reliable renewable energy sources and the installed wind turbine capacities are increasing radically every year. Although wind power has been favored by the public in general, the problem with the impact of wind turbine noise on people living in the vicinity of the turbines has been increased. Low noise wind turbine design is becoming more important as noise is spreading more adverse effect of wind turbine to public. This paper demonstrates the design of 10 kW class wind turbines, each of three blades, a rotor diameter 6.4m, a rated rotating speed 200 rpm and a rated wind speed 10 m/s. The optimized airfoil is dedicated for the 75% spanwise position because the dominant source of a wind turbine blade has been known as trailing edge noise from the outer 25% of the blade. Numerical computations are performed for incompressible flow and for Mach number at 0.145 and for Reynolds numbers at $1.02{\times}10^6$ with a lift performance, which is resistant to surface contamination and turbulence intensity. The objective in the low design process is to reduce noise emission, while sustaining high aerodynamic efficiency. Dominant broadband noise sources are predicted by semi-empirical formulas composed of the groundwork by Brooks et al. and Lowson associated with typical wind turbine operation conditions. During the airfoil redesign process, the aerodynamic performance is analyzed to minimize the wind turbine power loss. The results obtained from the design process show that the design method is capable of designing airfoils with reduced noise using a commercial 10 kW class wind turbine blade airfoil as a basis. The new optimized airfoil clearly indicates reduction of total SPL about 3 dB and higher aerodynamic performance.
