This paper deals with a parametric study on inclined elliptical dimples to enhance heat transfer in a channel. Three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Naiver-Stokes equations are solved to estimate flow and heat transfer in dimpled channel. As turbulence closure, the low-Re shear stress transport model is employed. Two non-dimensional geometric variables, dimple ellipse diameter ratio and angle of main diameter to flow direction are selected for the parametric study. The inclined elliptical dimples show higher heat-transfer performance but with higher pressure drop compared to the circular dimples. And there is an optimum inclination angle that gives the maximum heat transfer.
In this paper, the confined single slot jet impingement is investigated numerically. Although the geometry of the jet impingement is simple, the flow pattern of the jet impingement is complex and the numerical results of the jet impingement is affected much by numerical methods. The first goal of this study is to analyze the effects of Reynolds models and numerical spatial discretization schemes on the results of heat transfer performance and the flaw characteristics and to select the best method. Various versions of the low Reynolds number k-epsilon turbulence models are compared. Using the selected numerical method, the flow field and heat transfer characteristics of confined single slot jet impingement on a moving plate are analyzed.
This paper represents the numerical study on Taylor flow according to the radius ratio and the angular velocity for flow between tow cylinder. The numerical model is consisted of two cylinder which inner cylinder is rotating and outer cylinder is fix, and the axial direction is used the cyclic condition because of the length for axial direction is assumed infinite. The diameter of inner cylinder is assumed 86.8 mm, the numerical parameters are angular velocity and radius ratio. The numerical method is compared with the experimental results by Wereley, and the results are very good agreement. The critical Taylor number is calculated by theoretical and numerical analysis, and the results is showed the difference about ${\pm}10\;%$. As $Re/Re_c$ is increased, Taylor vortex is changed to wavy vortex, and then the wave number for azimuthal direction is increased. Azimuthal wave according to the radius ratio is showed high amplitude and low frequence in case of small radius ratio, and is showed low amplitude and high frequence in case of large radius ratio.
Large Eddy Simulations (LES) were carried out to investigate the aerodynamic characteristics of a rectangular cylinder with side ratio B/D=5 at Reynolds number Re=22,000 (based on cylinder thickness). Particular attention was devoted to the effects of velocity shear in the oncoming flow. Time-averaged and unsteady flow patterns around the cylinder were studied to enhance understanding of the effects of velocity shear. The simulation results showed that the Strouhal number has no significant variation with oncoming velocity shear, while the peak fluctuation frequency of the drag coefficient becomes identical to that of the lift coefficient with increase in velocity shear. The intermittently-reattached flow that features the aerodynamics of the 5:1 rectangular cylinder in non-shear flow becomes more stably reattached on the high-velocity side, and more stably separated on the low-velocity side. Both the mean and fluctuating drag coefficients increase slightly with increase in velocity shear. The mean and fluctuating lift and moment coefficients increase almost linearly with velocity shear. Lift force acts from the high-velocity side to the low-velocity side, which is similar to that of a circular cylinder but opposite to that of a square cylinder under the same oncoming shear flow.

Direct Numerical Simulation was carried out to predict mass transfer in turbulent flow around a rotating stepped cylinder. This investigation is a follow-up study of DNS of turbulent flow in Nesic et al. [Corrosion, Vol. 56, No. 10, pp. 1005 - 1014] The original motivation of this work stemmed from the efforts to design a simple device which can generate flows of high turbulence intensity at low cost for corrosion researchers. Two cases were considered; Sc=1 and 10 both at Re=335. Here, Sc and Re stand for Schmidt number and Reynolds number, respectively, based on the step height and the surface speed of the cylinder upstream of the step. Main focus was placed on the correlation between turbulence and mass transfer. The spatio-temporal evolution of concentration field is discussed. The numerical results are qualitatively compared with those of the experiment conducted with a similar flow configuration.

Two dimensional turbulent flow simulations on the low Mach number - high Reynolds number flow about the NACA 4412 airfoil are carried out as the airfoil approaches a ground. It has turned out that angle of attack between 2 and 8 degrees is recommended for the airfoil to utilize the benefit of ground effect. For the large angle of attack, the increment of lift due to the ground effect is faded away and negative aerodynamic effect such as destabilizing aspect in static longitudinal stability occurs and the separation point moves to forward as the airfoil approaches a ground.

Recent years have witnessed the use of micro shock tube in various engineering applications like micro combustion, micro propulsion, particle delivery systems etc. The flow characteristics occurring in the micro shock tube shows a considerable deviation from that of well established conventional macro shock tube due to very low Reynolds number and high Knudsen number effects. Also the diaphragm rupture process, which is considered to be instantaneous process in many of the conventional shock tubes, will be crucial for micro shock tubes in determining the near diaphragm flow field and shock formation. In the present study, an axi-symmetric CFD method has been applied to simulate the micro shock tube, with Maxwell's slip velocity and temperature jump boundary conditions. The effects of finite diaphragm rupture process on the flow field and the shock formation was investigated, in detail. The results show that the shock strength attenuates rapidly as it propagates through micro shock tubes.

Experiments of normal shock wave/turbulent boundary layer interaction were conducted in a supersonic diffuser. The flow Mach number just upstream of the normal shock wave was in the range of 1.10 to 1.70 and Reynolds number based upon the turbulent boundary layer thickness was varied in the range of 2.2*10$^{[-994]}$ -4.4*10$^{[-994]}$ . The wall pressures in streamwise and spanwise directions were measured for two test cases, in which the turbulent boundary layer thickness incoming into the supersonic diffuser was changed. The results show that the interactions of normal shock wave with turbulent boundary layer in the supersonic diffuser can be divided into three patterns, i.e., transonic interaction, weak interaction and strong interaction, depending on Mach number. The weak interactions generate the post-shock expansion which its strength is strong as the Mach number increases and the strong interactions form the pseudo-shock waves. From the spanwise measurements of wall pressure, it is known that if the flow Mach number is low, the interacting flow fields essentially appear two-dimensional, but they have an apparent 3-dimensionality for the higher Mach numbers.
The effect of vortex impingement on the fluid dynamics around a cylinder submerged in the wake of another of different diameters is numerically investigated at a Reynolds number Re = 200. While the diameter (D) of the downstream cylinder is fixed, impinging vortices are produced from the upstream cylinder diameter (d) varied as d/D = 0.24, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0, with a spacing ratio L=5.5d, where L is the distance between the center of the upstream cylinder to the front stagnation point of the downstream cylinder. Two-dimensional simulations are carried out using the finite volume method. Fluid forces acting on the two cylinders are correlated with impinging vortices, vortex shedding, and wake structure. Different facets of wake formation, wake structure, and flow separation and their connections to fluid forces are discussed.

A multiple production .epsilon. equation model was developed in the low Reynolds number $\kappa$-$\varepsilon$ model with the aids of DNS data. We derived the model theoretically and avoided the use of empirical correlations as much as possible in order for the model to have generality in the prediction of complex turbulent flow. Unavoidable model constants were, however, optimized with the aids of DNS data. All the production and dissipation models in the $\varepsilon$ equation were modified with damping functions to satisfy the wall limiting behavior. A new $f_{\mu}$ function, turbulent diffusion and pressure diffusion model for the k and .epsilon. equations were also proposed to satisfy the wall limiting behavior. By, computational investigation on the plane channel flows, we found that the multiple production model for .epsilon. equation could improve the near wall turbulence behavior compared with the standard production model without the complicated empirical modification. Satisfication of the wall limiting conditions for each turbulence model term was found to be most important for the accurate prediction of near wall turbulence behaviors.
