  • Structural and thermo-analytical studies were carried out to understand the phase formation kinetics of the single phase $Bi_5Ti_3FeO_{15}$ (BTFO) nanocrystals in $Bi_2O_3-Fe_2O_3-TiO_2$, during the polymerized complex (PC) synthesis method. The crystallization of Aurivillius phase $Bi_5Ti_3FeO_{15}$ layered perovskite was found to be initiated and achieved under the temperature conditions in the range of ${\sim}$800 to 1050$^{\circ}C$. The activation energy for grain growth of $Bi_5Ti_3FeO_{15}$ nanocrystals (NCs) was very low in case of NCs formed by PC (2.61 kJ/mol) than that formed by the solid state reaction (SSR) method (10.9 kJ/mol). The energy involved in the phase transformation of Aurivillius phase $Bi_5Ti_3FeO_{15}$ from $Bi_2O_3-Fe_2O_3-TiO_2$ system was ${\sim}$ 69.8 kJ/mol. The formation kinetics study of $Bi_5Ti_3FeO_{15}$ synthesized by SSR and PC methods would not only render a large impact in the nanocrystalline material development but also in achieving highly efficient visible photocatalysts.

  • Waste salt generated from a pyro-processing for the recovery of uranium and transuranic elements has high volatility at vitrification temperature and low compatibility in conventional waste glasses. For this reason, KAERI (Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute) suggested a new method to de-chlorinate waste salt by using an inorganic composite named SAP ($SiO_2-Al_2O_3-P_2O_5$). In this study, the de-chlorination behavior of waste salt and the microstructure of consolidated form were examined by adding $B_2O_3$ and $Fe_2O_3$ to the original SAP composition. De-chlorination behavior of metal chloride waste was slightly changed with given compositions, compared with that of original SAP. In the consolidated forms, the phase separation between Si-rich phase and P-rich phase decreases with the amount of $Al_2O_3$ or $B_2O_3$ as a connecting agent between Si and P-rich phase. The results of PCT (Product Consistency Test) indicated that the leach-resistance of consolidated forms out of reference composition was lowered, even though the leach-resistance was higher than that of EA (Environmental Assessment) glass. From these results, it could be inferred that the change in the content of Al or B in U-SAP affected the microstructure and leach-resistance of consolidated form. Further studies related with correlation between composition and characteristics of wasteform are required for a better understanding.

  • The proper estimation of physical and chemical properties of Earth materials and their structures at high pressure and high temperature conditions is key to the full understanding of diverse geological processes in Earth and planetary interiors. Multi-anvil press - high-pressure generating device - provides unique information of Earth materials under compression, mainly relevant to Earth's upper mantle. The quantitative estimation of the relationship between the oil load within press and the actual pressure conditions within the sample needs to be established to infer the planetary processes. Such pressure-load calibration has often been based on the phase transitions of crystalline earth materials with known pressure conditions; however, unlike at high temperature conditions, phase transitions at low (or room) temperatures can be sluggish, making the calibration at such conditions challenging. In this study, we explored the changes in Al coordination environments of permanently densified pyrope glasses upon the cold compression using the high-resolution 27Al MAS and 3QMAS NMR. The fractions of highly coordinated Al in the cold compressed pyrope glasses increase with increasing oil load and thus, the peak pressure condition. Based on known relationship between the peak pressure and the Al coordination environment in the compressed pyrope glasses at room temperature, we established a room temperature pressure-load calibration of the 14/8 HT assembly in 1,100-ton multi-anvil press. The current results highlight the first pressure-load calibration of any high pressure device using high-resolution NMR. Irreversible structural densification upon cold compression observed for the pyrope glasses provides insights into the deformation and densification mechanisms of amorphous earth materials at low temperature and high pressure conditions within the subducting slabs.

  • We fabricated 40 nm-thick cobalt silicide ($CoSi_2$) as a buffer layer, on p-type Si(100) and Si(111) substrates to investigate the possibility of GaN epitaxial growth on $CoSi_2$/Si substrates. We deposited GaN using a HVPE (hydride vapor phase epitaxy) with two processes of process I ($850^{\circ}C$-12 minutes + $1080^{\circ}C$-30 minutes) and process II ($557^{\circ}C$-5 minutes + $900^{\circ}C$-5 minutes) on $CoSi_2$/Si substrates. An optical microscopy, FE-SEM, AFM, and HR-XRD (high resolution X-ray diffractometer) were employed to determine the GaN epitaxy. In case of process I, it showed no GaN epitaxial growth. However, in process II, it showed that GaN epitaxial growth occurred. Especially, in process II, GaN layer showed selfaligned substrate separation from silicon substrate. Through XRD ${\omega}$-scan of GaN <0002> direction, we confirmed that the combination of cobalt silicide and Si(100) as a buffer and HVPE at low temperature (process II) was helpful for GaN epitaxy growth.

  • TiO$_2$anchored on a porous clay ceramic support (PCS) for use in lightweight photocatalyst were synthesized by the dropping precipitant method. A PCS of macro and micro pore size of around several mm~${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in diameter were prepared by the rapid heat treatment at, 1,15$0^{\circ}C$ for 10 min from low grade of clay. The change in pH of reaction solution due to the different addition rate of NH$_4$HCO$_3$as a precipitant, the reaction temperature and the concentration of TiCl$_4$had a pronounced effect on the nature of precipitated TiO$_2$particles on the surface of a PCS and the crystal structure of precipitated TiO$_2$particles. At an addition rate of 0.8 ml/min of NH$_4$HCO$_3$and pH=6 of reaction solution, homogeneous precipitation of TiO$_2$particles on a PCS was achieved. TiO$_2$particles with anatase phase was precipitated on the surface of a PCS at the low concentration of TiCl$_4$, the high addition rate of NH$_4$HCO$_3$and the high reaction temperature.

  • The plain coarse pottery from the Unjeonri Bronze Age relic sites in the Cheonan, Korea were studied on the basis of clay mineralogy, geochemistry and archaegeological interpretations. For the research, the potteries are utilized at the analysis for 6 pieces of plain coarse potteries. Color of the these potteries are mainly light brown, partly shows the yellowish brown to reddish brown. The interior, surface and inside of the pottery appear as different colors in any cases. Original source materials making the Unjeonri potteries are used of mainly sandy clay soil with extreme coarse grained irregularly quartz and feldspar. The magnetic susceptibility of the Unjeonri pottery range from 0.20 to 1.20. And the Unjeonri soil's magnetic susceptibility agree almost with 0.20 to 1.30. In the same magnetization of soil and pottery, the results revealed that the Unjeonri soil and low material of pottery are same produced by identical source materials. The Unjeonri potteries and soil are very similar patterns with all characteristics of soil mineralogy, geochemical evolution trend. The result seems to be same relationships between the behavior and enrichment patterns on the basis of a compatible and a incompatible elements. Consequently, the Unjeonri potteries suggest that made the soil to be distributed in the circumstance of the relic sites as the raw material are high in a greater part. In the Unjeonri soil, the kaolinite is common occurred minerals. However, in the Unjeonri pottery, the kaolinite was not detected in all broken pieces. The kaolinite was presumed to destroy crystal structure during the firing processes of over $550^{\circ}C$. The quartz is phase transition from ${\alpha}$-quartz to ${\beta}$-quartz at $573^{\circ}C$, but the Unjeonri pottery did not investigated any phase transition evidences of quartz. The chorite was detected within the mostly potteries and soils. As the results, the Unjeonri potteries can be interpreted by not experiencing a firing temperature over $800^{\circ}C$. The colloidal and cementing materials between the quartz and low materials during the heating did not exist in the internal part of the potteries. An any secondary compounds by heating does not appear within the crack to happen during the dry of the pottery. The hyphae group are kept as it is with the root tissue of an organic matters to live in the swampy land. In the syntheses of all results, the general firing condition to bake and make the Unjeonri pottery is presumed from $550^{\circ}C$ to $800^{\circ}C$. However, the firing condition making the Unjeonri pottery can be different firing temperature partially in one pottery. Even, the some part of the pottery does not take a direct influence on the fire.

  • The effect of Ar/N2 two-step plasma treatment on the quantitative interfacial adhesion energy of low temperature Cu-Cu bonding interface were systematically investigated. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis showed that Ar/N2 2-step plasma treatment has less copper oxide due to the formation of an effective Cu4N passivation layer. Quantitative measurements of interfacial adhesion energy of Cu-Cu bonding interface with Ar/N2 2-step plasma treatment were performed using a double cantilever beam (DCB) and 4-point bending (4-PB) test, where the measured values were 1.63±0.24 J/m2 and 2.33±0.67 J/m2, respectively. This can be explained by the increased interfacial adhesion energy according phase angle due to the effect of the higher interface roughness of 4-PB test than that of DCB test.

  • Yttrium ions doped $TiO_2$ particles have been prepared using a low temperature combustion method. The physical properties were investigated, together with the activity of $TiO_2$ particles as a photocatalyst for the decomposition of methylene blue. From XRD results, the major phase of all the $TiO_2$ particles prepared under basic condition was an anatase structure but a rutile peak was observed when they are prepared under acidic condition. The crystallite size of $TiO_2$ particles was decreased as the molar ratio of CA/TTIP increased. The photocatalytic activity increased with an increase of CA/TTIP molar ratio and pH in the solution. In addition, the doping of 1.0 mole% yttrium ion on the $TiO_2$ enhanced the photocatalytic activity and showed the higher activity than commercial P-25 catalyst.

  • It has been reported that the luteal function may be regulated by the intracellular calcium in luteal cells (Higuchi et al, 1976; Dorflinger et at, 1984; Gore and Behrman, 1984) which is adjusted partially by $Ca^{++}-ATPase$ activities in luteal cell membranes (Verma and Pennistion, 1981). However, the physicochemical and kinetic properties of $Ca^{++}-ATPase$ in luteal membranes were not fully characterized. This study was, therefore, undertaken to partially characterize the physicochemical and kinetic properties of $Ca^{++}-ATPase$ system in luteal membranes and microsomal fractions, known as an one of the major $Ca^{++}$ storge sites (Moore and Pastan, 1978), from the highly luteinized ovary Highly luteinized ovaries were obtained from PMSG-hCG injected immautre female rats. Light membrane and heavy membrane fractions and microsomal fractions were prepared by the differential and discontinuous sucrose density gradient centrifugation method desribed by Bramley and Ryan (1980). Light membrane and heavy membrane fractions and microsomal fractions from highly luteinized ovaries are composed of the two different kinds of $Ca^{++}-ATPase$ system. One is the high affinity $Ca^{++}-ATPase$ which is activated in low $Ca^{++}$ concentration (Km, 10-30 nM), the other is low affinity $Ca^{++}-ATPase$ activated in higher $Ca^{++}$ concentration $(K_{1/2},\;40\;{\mu}M)$. At certain $Ca^{++}$ concentrations, activities of high and low affinity $Ca^{++}-ATPase$ are the highest in light membrane fractions and are the lowest in microsomal fractions. It appeares that high affinity $Ca^{++}-ATPase$ system have 2 binding sites for ATP (Hill's coefficient; around 2 in all membrane fractions measured) and the positive cooperativity of ATP bindings obviously existed in each membrane fractions. The optimum pH for high affinity $Ca^{++}-ATPase$ activation is around S in all membrane fractions measured. The lipid phase transition temperature measured by Arrhenius plots of high affinity $Ca^{++}-ATPase$ activity is around $25^{\circ}C$. The activation energies of high affinity $Ca^{++}-ATPase$ below the transition temperature are similar in each membrane fractions, but at the above transition temperature, it is the hightest in heavy membrane fractions and the lowest in microsomal fractions. According to the above results, it is suggested that intracellular $Ca^{++}$ level, which may regulate the luteal function, may be adjusted primarily by the high affinity $Ca^{++}-ATPase$ system activated in intracellular $Ca^{++}$ concentration range $(below\;0.1\;{\mu}M)$.

  • We executed the property changes of the sintered MgO (99.9% purity, 300nm size) specimens with addition to CaO content of 0.00wt%, 0.25wt%, and 0.50wt%, processed at 7GPa, for 5min, 600~$800^{\circ}C$. To investigate the micro-structure and physical property changes of the sintered MgO(-CaO), we employed a scanning electron microscopy(SEM), X-ray diffractomerty(XRD), Vickers hardness, and density. The SEM result showed that MgO powder of 300nm size was changed into sintered structure of 520nm by high pressure and low temperature sintering, regardless of the CaO contents. According to the XRD analysis, no CaO phase observed, while MgO peaks shift indicated the existence of CaO in the MgO matrix. The Vickers hardness result showed that hardness of sintered MgO-CaO increased by 12% compared pure MgO under the same temperature conditions. It implied that we can obtain the same hardness with $100^{\circ}C$ lowered sintering temperatures by addition of CaO. The density results showed that it was possible to obtain density of 98%, which is 5% greater than that of pure MgO at low temperature of $600^{\circ}C$.
