In most direct contact liquid-liquid heat exchangers, oil or hydrocarbon with a density less than water is normally used as dispersed working fluid. The main difficulty that arises with this arrangement lies in the control of the interface at the top of the column. When it is connected with a solar collector which uses water as its working fluid, the main difficulties arise from the fact that the water can be frozen during winter time. In order to solve these problems and to demonstrate the technical feasibility of a direct contact liquid-liquid heat exchanger, liquids heavier than water with low freezing temperature has been utilized as dispersed phase liquids in a small laboratory scale model made of pyrex glass. In the present investigation, dimethyl phthalate(C/sub 6/H/sub 4/)COOCH/sub 3/)/sub 2/) and diethyl phthalate (C/sub 6/H/sub 4/(CO/sub 2/C/sub 2/H/sub 5/)/sub 2/) are utilized as heavy dispersed phase working fluids. The results of the present investigation the technical in the utilization of heavier dispersed working liquid in the spray-column liquid-liquid heat exchanger for a solar system. The overall average temperature difference along the column is found to be almost half of the initial temperature difference between the dispersed and the continuous phase. Despite the fact that the two phthalates tested in the experiment differ significantly in some of their physical properties, the volumetric heat transfer coefficients in terms of dispersed fluid superficial velocities were found to be similar for both phthalates tested.

An experimental study is performed to investigate unsteady mixed convection in a horizontal channel with a heat source. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) with thermo-sensitive liquid crystal (TLC) tracers is used for visualization and analysis. This method allows simultaneous measurement of velocity and temperature fields at a given instant of time. Quantitative data of the temperature and velocity are obtained by applying the color-image processing to a visualized image, and neural network is applied to the color-to-temperature calibration. It is found that the periodic flow of mixed convection in a cavity appears at very low Reynolds numbers (Re<0.4), and the period decreases with increasing Reynolds numbers and increases with increasing aspect ratio.

Recently, a demand in sustainable green technologies is requiring the lead free bonding for high power module packaging due to the environmental pollution. The Transient-liquid phase (TLP) bonding can be a good alternative to a high Pb-bearing soldering. Basically, TLP bonding is known as the combination of soldering and diffusion bonding. Since the low melting temperature material is fully consumed after TLP bonding, the remelting temperature of joint layer becomes higher than the operating temperature of the power module. Also, TLP bonding is cost-effective process than metal nanopaste bonding such as Ag. In this paper, various TLP bonding techniques for power semiconductor were described.

Carbon films was grown on Si substrates using the method of electrolysis for methanol liquid. Deposition parameters for the growth of the carbon films were current density for the electrolysis, methanol liquid temperature and electrode spacing between anode and cathode. We examined electrical resistance and the surface morphology of carbon films formed under various conditions specified by deposition parameters. It was clarified that the high electrical resistance carbon films with smooth surface morphology are grown when a distance between the electrodes was relatively wider. We found that the electrical resistance in the films was independent of both current density and methanol liquid temperature for electrolysis. The temperature dependence of the electrical resistance in the low resistance carbon films was different from one obtained in graphite.

In this study, development of a new LTCC material using non-glassy system was attempted with repsect to reducing the fabrication process steps and cost down. Lowering the sintering temperature can be achieved by liquid phase sintering. However, presence of liquid phases usually decrease dielectric properties, especially the quality factor. Therefore, the starting material must have quality factor as high as possible in microwave frequency range. And also, the material should have a low dielectric constant for enhancing the signal propagation speed. Regarding these factors, dielectric constants of various materials were estimated by the Clausius-Mosotti equation. Among them, $ZnWO_4$ was turned out the suitable LTCC material. $ZnWO_4$ can be sintered up to 98% of full density at $1050^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours. It's measured dielectric constant, quality factor, and temperature coefficient of resonant frequency were 15.5, 74380GHz, and $-70ppm/^{\circ}C$, respectively. In order to modify the dielectric properties and densification temperature, $B_{2}O_{3}$ and $V_{2}O_{5}$ were added to $ZnWO_4$. 40 mol% $B_{2}O_{3}$ addition reduced the dielectric constant from 15.5 to 12. And the temperature coefficient of resonant frequency was improved from -70 to $-7.6ppm/^{\circ}C$. However, sintering temperature did not change due to either lack of liquid phase or high viscosity of liquid phase. Incorporation of small amount of $V_{2}O_{5}$ in $ZnWO_{4}-B_{2}O_{3}$ system enhanced liquid phase sintering. 0.1 wt% $V_{2}O_{5}$ addition to the $0.6ZnWO_{4}-0.4B_{2}O_{3}$ system, reduced the sintering temperature down to $950^{\circ}C$. Dielectric constant, quality factor, and temperature coefficient of resonant frequency were 9.5, 16737GHz, and $-21.6ppm/^{\circ}C$, respectively.

SiC materials have been extensively studied for high temperature components in advanced energy system and advanced gas turbine because it has excellent high temperature strength, low coefficient of thermal expansion, good resistance to oxidation and good thermal and chemical stability etc. However, the brittle characteristics of SiC such as low fracture toughness and low strain-to fracture still impose a severe limitation on practical applications of SiC materials. For these reasons, SiC/SiC composites can be considered as a promising for various structural materials, because of their good fracture toughness compared with monolithic SiC ceramics. But, high temperature and pressure lead to the degradation of the reinforcing jiber during the hot pressing. Therefore, reduction of sintering temperature and pressure is key requirements for the fabrication of SiC/SiC composites by hot pressing method. In the present work, monolithic Liquid Phase Sintered SiC (LPS-SiC) was fabricated by hot pressing method in Ar atmosphere at $1800^{\circ}C$ under 20MPa using $Al_2O_3,\;Y_2O_3\;and\;SiO_2$ as sintering additives in order to low sintering temperature and sintering pressure. The starting powder was high purity $\beta-SiC$ nano-powder with all average particle size of 30mm. The characterization of LPS-SiC was investigated by means of SEM and three point bending test. Base on the composition of sintering additives-, microstructure- and mechanical property correlation, tire compositions of sintering additives are discussed.
The creep-rupture and low cycle fatigue properties of transient liquid phase bonded joints of Ni-base single crystal superalloy, CMSX-2 was investigated using MBF-80 insert metal. The (100) orientation of bonded specimen was aligned perpendicular to the joint interface. CMSX-2 was bonded at 1523K for 1.8ks in vacuum, optimum bonding condition. The creep rupture strength and rupture lives of the joints were the almost identical to ones of the base metal. SEM observation of the fracture surfaces of joints after creep rupture test revealed that the fracture surfaces classified three types of region, ductile fracture surface, cleavage fracture surface and interfacial fracture surface. The low cycle fatigue properties of the joints were also the same level as those of base metal. The elongation and reduction of area values of joints were comparable to those of base metal while fell down on creep rupture condition of high temperature.
