A study on engine performances and exhaust emissions using gasoline-methanol as an alternative fuel (대체연료로서 가솔린-메타놀 혼합연료에 의한 가솔린 기관성능과 배출오염물에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this paper is to study the possibility of practical use of gasoline-methanol mixed fuel as an alternative fuel of gasoline engines in the light of engine performances and harmful exhaust emissions as well as mixings and separations of the mixed fuels. When the methanol of 99.8% purity is mixed with super or regular gasoline available on the market today, the experimental results obtained without modifying carburetor in this study are as follows; 1.The separation ratio depends upon the gasoline-methanol mixing ratio only, regardless of fuel temperature and fuel additives for preventing separation of phase. 2.The critical absorption ratio is affected by the gasoline-methanol mixing ratio, its temperature and the quantity of fuel additives. 3.Concerning the distillation temperature, the initial point of all sorts of fuels is almost same,but 10% point and 35-60% point of mixed fuels are lower than those of gasoline only. 4.In case of throttle valve opening set, engine output using the mixed fuels is decreased compared to gasoline, but thermal efficiency is increased as a consequence of decreasing specific energy consumption. 5.In case of fixed load test, thermal efficiency is increased at low engine speed even under low part-load as well as under comparatively high part-load including full load. 6.CO and NOx emissions are reduced remarkably with the mixed fuels.

Combustion Characteristics and Exhaust Emissions in Spark-ignition Engine Using Gasoline-ammonia (가솔린 엔진에서 가솔린-암모니아 혼합 연료의 연소 및 배기 특성)

  • The effect of gaseous ammonia direct injection on the engine performance and exhaust emissions in gasoline-ammonia dual fueled spark-ignition engine was investigated in this study. Results show that based on the gasoline contribution engine power increases as the ammonia injection timing and duration is advanced and increased, respectively. However, as the initial amount of gasoline is increased the maximum power output contribution from ammonia is reduced. For gasoline-ammonia, the appropriate injection timing is found to range from 320 BTDC at low loads to 370 BTDC at high loads and the peak pressures are slightly lower than that for gasoline due to the slow flame speed of ammonia, resulting in the reduction of combustion efficiency. The brake specific energy consumption (BSEC) for gasoline-ammonia has little difference compared to the BSEC for gasoline only. Ammonia direct injection causes slight reduction of $CO_2$ and CO for all presented loads but significantly increases HC due to the low combustion efficiency of ammonia. Also, ammonia direct injection results in both increased ammonia and NOx in the exhaust due to formation of fuel NOx and ammonia slip.

  • Resistance random access memory (ReRAM) is a promising candidate for next-generation nonvolatile memory because of its advantageous qualities such as simple structure, superior scalability, fast switching speed, low-power operation, and nondestructive readout. We investigated the resistive switching behavior of tantalum oxide that has been widely used in dynamic random access memories (DRAM) in the present semiconductor industry. As a result, it possesses full compatibility with the entrenched complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor processes. According to previous studies, TiN is a good oxygen reservoir. The TiN top electrode possesses the specific properties to control and modulate oxygen ion reproductively, which results in excellent resistive switching characteristics. This study presents fully room temperature fabricated the TiN/$TaO_x$/Pt devices and their electrical properties for nonvolatile memory application. In addition, we investigated the TiN electrode dependence of the electrical properties in $TaO_x$ memory devices. The devices exhibited a low operation voltage of 0.6 V as well as good endurance up to $10^5$ cycles. Moreover, the benefits of high devise yield multilevel storage possibility make them promising in the next generation nonvolatile memory applications.

Dry sliding wear behavior of plain low carbon dual phase steel by strain hardening and oxidation (가공경화와 산화층 형성에 의한 이상조직 저탄소강의 건식 미끄럼 마멸 거동)

  • Dry sliding wear behavior of low carbon dual phase steel, of which microstructure consists of hard martensite in a ductile ferrite matrix, has been investigated. The wear characteristics of the dual phase steel was compared with that of a plain carbon steel which was normalized at $950^{\circ}C$ for 30min and then air-cooled. Dry sliding wear tests were carried out using a pin-on-disk type tester at various loads of 1N to 10N under a constant sliding speed condition of 0.2m/sec against an AISI 52100 bearing steel ball at room temperature. The sliding distance was fixed as 1000m for all wear tests. The wear rate was calculated by dividing the weight loss measured to the accuracy of $10^{-5}g$ by the specific gravity and sliding distance. The worn surfaces and wear debris were analyzed by SEM, EDS and a profilomter. Micro vickers hardness values of the cross section of worn surface were measured to analyze strain hardening behavior underneath the wearing surfaces. The were rate of the dual phase steel was lower than the plain carbon steel. Oxidation on the sliding surface and strain hardening were attributed for the higher wear resistance of the dual phase steel.

  • Wireless sensor networks achieve environment monitoring and controlling through use of small devices of low cost and low power. Such network is comprised of several sensor nodes, each having a microprocessor, sensor, actuator and wired/wireless transceiver inside a small device. In this paper, we employ the sensor networks in order to design and implement a real-time vehicle safety system. Such system can inform the safe velocity in a specific weather condition to drivers in advance through analyzing the weather data collected from sensor networks. As a result, the drivers can prevent effectively accidents by controlling their car speed.

  • High Temperature Superconductor power cable systems are being developed actively to solve the problem of increasing power demand. With increases in the unit length of the High Temperature Superconductor power cable, it is necessary to develop highly efficient and reliable cryogenic pumps to transport the coolant over long distances. Generally, to obtain a high degree of efficiency, the cryogenic pump requires a high pressure rise with a low flow rate, and a partial emission type pump is appropriate considering its low specific speed, which is different from the conventional centrifugal type, full emission type. This paper describes the design of a partial emission pump to circulate subcooled liquid nitrogen. It consists of an impeller, a circular case and a diffuser. The conventional pump and the partial emission pump have different features in the impeller and the discharge flow passage. The partial emission pump uses an impeller with straight radial blades. The emission of working fluid does not occur continuously from all of the impeller channels, and the diffuser allows the flow only from a part of the impeller channels. As the area of the diffuser increases gradually, it converts the dynamic pressure into static pressure while minimizing the loss of total pressure. We used the known numerical method for the optimum design process and made a CFD analysis to verify the theoretical performance.

The sliding distance was fixed as 1000m for all wear tests. The wear rate was calculated by dividing the weight loss, measured to the accuracy of 10-5g by the specific gravity and sliding distance. The worn surfaces and wear debris were analyzed by SEM, EDS and profilometer. Micro-vickers hardness of the cross section of worn surfaces were conducted to analyze strain hardening underneath the contact surfaces. The wear mechanism of the UFG dual phase steel was investigated with emphasis on the unstable nature of the grain boundaries of the UFG microstructure.

Effect of Aluminum Purity on the Pore Formation of Porous Anodic Alumina

  • Anodic alumina oxide (AAO), a self-ordered hexagonal array, has various applications in nanofabrication such as the fabrication of nanotemplates and other nanostructures. In order to obtain highly ordered porous alumina membranes, a two-step anodization or prepatterning of aluminum are mainly conducted with straight electric field. Electric field is the main driving force for pore growth during anodization. However, impurities in aluminum can disturb the direction of the electric field. To confirm this, we anodized two different aluminum foil samples with high purity (99.999%) and relatively low purity (99.8%), and compared the differences in the surface morphologies of the respective aluminum oxide membranes produced in different electric fields. Branched pores observed in porous alumina surface which was anodized in low-purity aluminum and the size; dimensions of the pores were found to be usually smaller than those obtained from high-purity aluminum. Moreover, anodization at high voltage proceeds to a significant level of conversion because of the high speed of the directional electric field. Consequently, anodic alumina membrane of a specific morphology, i.e., meshed pore, was produced.

Sub-Frame Analysis-based Object Detection for Real-Time Video Surveillance

  • We introduce a vision-based object detection method for real-time video surveillance system in low-end edge computing environments. Recently, the accuracy of object detection has been improved due to the performance of approaches based on deep learning algorithm such as Region Convolutional Neural Network(R-CNN) which has two stage for inferencing. On the other hand, one stage detection algorithms such as single-shot detection (SSD) and you only look once (YOLO) have been developed at the expense of some accuracy and can be used for real-time systems. However, high-performance hardware such as General-Purpose computing on Graphics Processing Unit(GPGPU) is required to still achieve excellent object detection performance and speed. To address hardware requirement that is burdensome to low-end edge computing environments, We propose sub-frame analysis method for the object detection. In specific, We divide a whole image frame into smaller ones then inference them on Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) based image detection network, which is much faster than conventional network designed forfull frame image. We reduced its computationalrequirementsignificantly without losing throughput and object detection accuracy with the proposed method.

Sustainable use of OPC-CSA blend for artificial cementation of sand: A dosage optimization study

  • The use of calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) cement as a rapid-hardening cement admixture or eco-friendly alternate for ordinary Portland cement (OPC) has been attempted over the years, but the cost of CSA cement and availability of suitable aluminium resource prevent its wide practical application. To propose an effective ground improvement design in sandy soil, this study aims at blending a certain percentage of CSA with OPC to find an optimum blend that would have fast-setting behavior with a lower carbon footprint than OPC without compromising the mechanical properties of the cemented sand. Compared to the 100% CSA case, initial speed of strength development of blended cement is relatively low as it is mixed with OPC. It is found that 80% OPC and 20% CSA blend has low initial strength but eventually produces equivalent ultimate strength (28 days curing) to that of CSA treated sand. The specific OPC-CSA blend (80:20) exhibits significantly higher strength gain than using pure OPC, thus allowing effective geotechnical designs for sustainable and controlled ground improvement. Further parametric studies were conducted for the blended cement under various curing conditions, cement contents, and curing times. Wet-cured cement treated sand had 33% lower strength than that of dry-cured samples, while the stiffness of wet-cured samples was 25% lower than that of dry-cured samples.
