  • Purpose: This study was conducted in order to investigate the physical activities of vulnerable low-income middle-aged people and their associated factors. Methods: From a health behavior survey of 1,000 vulnerable low-income subjects from a public health center in a metropolitan city, a secondary analysis was conducted for 332 respondents who ranged in age from 40 to 64. Results: The prevalence of walking activity was 45.2% and that of moderately intense physical activity was 9.9%. Prevalence of walking activity showed a significant association with marital status (divorce/widowed/separated, OR=2.263), drinking (drinker, OR=0.430), and CES-D score (over 21, OR=0.434). Prevalence of moderately intense physical activity was greater in subjects who had two chronic diseases, compared with those who had no chronic diseases (OR=3.713). Conclusion: Findings of this study suggest a need for implementation of strategies to improve moderately intense physical activity of low-income, middle-aged people. Also, in addition to studies on socio-demographic and health status and their associations with physical activity, further studies of related factors affecting physical activity, such as self-efficacy, social support, and social networks as internal and external resources, are needed.

  • Purpose: We investigated to identify the effect of robo-horseback riding exercise (RHRE) on trunk muscle activity ratios for patients with low back pain. Methods: Twelve patients with low back pain and twelve healthy adults were recruited for this study. Subjects performed the RHRE with the neutral spine position. The amplitude of electromyography activity was recorded from the selected trunk muscles (internal oblique [IO], rectus abdominis [RA], multifidus [MF], the thoracic part of the iliocostalis lumborum [ICLT]). The ratios of the relative local muscle activity to the global muscle activity in abdominal and lumbar parts were calculated. Results: There were significant differences in the change values of the IO/RA and the MF/ICLT between low back pain (LBP) patients and healthy adults. The IO/RA ratio and the MF/ICLT ratio showed significant increase in LBP patients after training. Conclusion: The RHRE improved the trunk muscle activity ratio in patients with low back pain. The information presented here is important for investigators who use lumbar stabilization exercises as a rehabilitation exercise.

  • Purpose: Low back pain occurs and frequently recurs in many people. An imbalance of paraspinal muscle activity can cause low back pain. Mulligan's concept of mobilizations with sustained natural apophyseal glides (SNAG) is a common method for treating low back pain. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of this method on paraspinal muscle activity in patients with chronic low back pain. Methods: Twenty-one patients with low back pain participated in this study. Patients were classified using the Oswestry disability index. The subjects' paraspinal muscles were measured by surface electromyography both before and after the SNAG mobilization. We measured the root mean square value of the paraspinal muscles during lumbar flexion and extension. Results: Paraspinal muscle activity in patients with chronic low back pain was different between the right and left sides. Importantly, paraspinal muscle activity significantly decreased after using the SNAG mobilization method. Conclusion: This study shows a difference between paraspinal muscle activity in chronic low back pain patients and finds that the Mulligan's concept of SNAG mobilization is effective at reducing imbalances in paraspinal muscle activity in low back pain patients.

  • Purpose: This study compared the body composition and health conservation of low and high physical activity groups in professional retired elderly. Methods: The participants were 132 professional retired elders using a university of education for the elderly and senior welfare centers in D and K city. Data were collected through interviews from November to December in 2015. The body composition was measured using an Inbody 230 and the health conservation was measured using Sung's (2005) Health Conservation Scale. The low and high physical activity groups were divided by CHAMPS (The Community Healthy Activities Model Program for Seniors Questionnaire). The collected data were analyzed using a $x^2$ test, independentt-test, andbinary logistic regression using the SPSS/WIN 20.0 program. Results: The body composition (body mass index, body fat percentage, and fitness score) and health conservation score were higher in the high physical activity group than in the low physical activity group. The result shows that the body weight (OR=10.62) is the highest risk factor influencing the physical activity in professional career-retired elders. Conclusion: These results suggest that to induce physical activity level among professional retired elders, nursing interventions are needed to increase the health conservation and body composition, particularly in controlling the body weight.

  • [Purpose] The study aimed to determine the effects of bone-specific physical activity on body composition, bone mineral density (BMD), and health-related physical fitness in middle-aged women. [Methods] One hundred eighty-six middle-aged women aged 31-49 years participated in this study. The subjects were divided into tertile groups according to the level of physical activity (low-score group, n=62; middle-score group, n=62; high-score group, n=62). Bone-specific physical activity participation was assessed using the bone-specific physical activity questionnaire. Body composition and BMD were measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Health-related physical fitness test included isometric muscle strength (grip strength), muscular endurance (sit-ups), flexibility (sit and reach), and cardiorespiratory fitness (maximal oxygen uptake [VO2max]). [Results] The high-score group had a significantly higher fat-free mass (p=.045, partial eta-squared value[ηp2]=.033) than the middle- and low-score groups, whereas the high-score group had significantly lower percent body fat (p=.005, ηp2=.056) than the other two groups. Whole-body BMD (p=.034, ηp2=.036) and lumbar BMD (p=.003, ηp2=.060) were significantly higher in the high-score group than in the low-score group. The high-score group performed significantly better for grip strength (p=.0001, ηp2=.101), sit-ups (p=.0001, ηp2=.108), and VO2max (p=.0001, ηp2=.092) than the other two groups. [Conclusion] The present study suggests that bone-specific physical activity could be useful in improving body composition, BMD, and health-related physical fitness in middle-aged women, significantly enhancing their BMD and health conditions.

  • Purpose: The purpose of the present study was to examine joint position senses and muscle activity in subjects with and without chronic low back pain and to determine the effects of different types of bridge exercises on their trunk muscle activity. Methods: Thrity-eight subjects with chronic low back pain and thrity healthy controls participated in the experiment. Joint position senses and trunk muscle activity levels were measured during the different bridge exercise methods. Results: The joint position senses of the healthy group and chronic low back pain group showed significant differences during lumbar flexion, lumbar extension, lumbar lateral flexion, and lumbar rotation. The muscle activity levels of the transversus abdominis (TrA), internal oblique (IO), and external oblique (EO) were highest in the prone bridge exercise (PBE) group, followed by the supine bridge swiss ball exercise (SBSE) group and supine bridge exercise (SBE) group in order of precedence. The muscle activity level of the erector spinae (ES) was highest in the SBSE group, followed by the SBE and PBE groups in order of precedence. Conclusion: Overall, the results suggest that chronic low back pain is associated with declines in joint position senses and that PBEs increase trunk muscle activity more than conventional bridge exercises.
