  • Interest in three-dimensional (3D) printing processes has grown significantly, and several types have been developed. These 3D printing processes are classified as Selective Laser Sintering (SLS), Stereo-Lithography Apparatus (SLA), and Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM). SLS can be applied to many materials, but because it uses a laser-based material removal process, it is expensive. SLA enables fast and precise manufacturing, but available materials are limited. FDM printing's benefits are its reasonable price and easy accessibility. However, metal printing using FDM can involve technical problems, such as suitable component supply or the thermal expansion of the heating part. Thus, FDM printing primarily uses materials with low melting points, such as acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) or polylactic acid (PLA) resin. In this study, an FDM process for enabling metal printing is suggested. Particularly, the nozzle and heatsink for this process are focused for stable printing. To design the nozzle and heatsink, multi-physical phenomena, including thermal expansion and heat transfer, had to be considered. Therefore, COMSOL Multiphysics, an FEM analysis program, was used to analyze the maximum temperature, thermal expansion, and principal stress. Finally, its performance was confirmed through an experiment.

  • Hydrogen storage as a metal hydride is the most promising alternative because of its relatively large hydrogen storage capacities near room temperature. TiMn2-based C14 Laves phases alloys are one of the promising hydrogen storage materials with easy activation, good hydriding-dehydriding kinetics, high hydrogen storage capacity and relatively low cost. In this work, multi-component, hyper-stoichiometric $Ti_{0.85}Zr_{0.13}(Fe_x-V)_{0.56}Mn_{1.47}Ni_{0.05}$ C14 Laves phase alloys were prepared by a vacuum induction melting for a hydrogen storage tank. Since pure vanadium (V) is quite expensive, the substitution of the V element in these alloys has been tried and some interesting results were achieved by replacing V by commercial ferrovanadium (FeV) raw material. In addition, the melt-spinning process, which was applied to the manufacturing of some of these alloys, could make the plateau slopes much flatter, which resulted in the increase of reversible hydrogen storage capacity. The improvement of sloping properties of melt-spun $Ti_{0.85}Zr_{0.13}(Fe_x-V)_{0.56}Mn_{1.47}Ni_{0.05}$ alloys was mainly attributed to the homogeneity of chemical composition.

  • A series of liquid crystalline polyesters containing X-shaped mesogenic groups in main chain were synthesized through the solution polymerization of 2,5-di(4-substituted benzoate)hydroquinones and 4,4'-dicarboxy-1,8-diphenoxyoctane. The structures and properties of synthesized polymers were investigated by $^1H$-NMR, FT-IR, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), polarized optical microscopy (POM) and wide angel X-ray diffraction (WXRD). Inherent viscosities (${\eta}_{inh}$) of polymers were measured between 0.35 and 0.66 dL/g in 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane, and they were easily soluble in most of organic solvents used for this experiment. All polymers revealed relatively low melting transition temperature ($T_m$) and crystallinity, and also showed thermotropic nematic liquid crystallinity when they were heated to their melting temperatures. These properties of polymers were presumably due to the presence of the bulky substituting groups on the hydroquinone unit in mesogenic group.

  • A fundamental study of the distillation behavior of ferromanganese alloy melts was carried out at 1773 K and 0.1333 kPa (=1 Torr). During the distillation of ferromanganese alloy melts under reduced pressure, manganese vaporizes preferentially to phosphorus and other solute elements. High purity manganese metal with a very low content of solute elements can be obtained by distillation of ferromanganese alloy melts. The evaporation of manganese is suppressed as the carbon content of ferromanganese alloy melt increases due to the decrease of activity and vapor pressure of the manganese. When the carbon content of ferromanganese alloy melt is high, melt droplets are ejected from the bath, especially in the early stages of the distillation, and the solute elements in the splashed droplets contaminate the condensed material. The ejection of melt droplets is presumed to be caused by the increase of melting temperature and viscosity of the surface layer of melt due to the enrichment of solute elements such as carbon and iron.

  • An important property of glass and ceramic solid waste forms is processability. Tellurite materials with low melting temperatures and high halite solubilities have potential as solid waste forms. Crystalline TiTe3O8 was synthesized through a solid-state reaction between stoichiometric amounts of TiO2 and TeO2 powder. The resultant TiTe3O8 crystal had a three-dimensional (3D) structure consisting of TiO6 octahedra and asymmetric TeO4 seesaw moiety groups. The melting temperature of the TiTe3O8 powder was 820℃, and the constituent TeO2 began to evaporate selectively from TiTe3O8 above around 840℃. The leaching rate, as determined using the modified American Society of Testing and Materials static leach test method, of Ti in the TiTe3O8 crystal was less than the order of 10-4 g·m-2·d-1 at 90℃ for durations of 14 d over a pH range of 2-12. The chemical durability of the TiTe3O8 crystal, even under highly acidic and alkaline conditions, was comparable to that of other well-known Ti-based solid waste forms.

  • With trend of the miniaturization and the high-functionalizing of mobile communication system, low-loss microwave dielectric materials are widely used for high frequency communication components. These dielectric materials should be co-sintered with highly electric-conducting metal such as silver or copper for high-frequency and thick film process application. Sintering temperature of $Ca(Li_{1/3}Nd_{2/3})_{0.2}Ti_{0.8}]O_{3-{\delta}}$, which has excellent dielectric properties such as ${\varepsilon}_r$ above 40, quality factor ($Q{\cdot}f_0$) above 16,000 GHz, and TCF (temperature coefficient of resonant frequency) of $-20{\sim}-10ppm/^{\circ}C$, is reported as high as $1,175^{\circ}C$, so it could not be co-sintered with silver or copper. Therefore in this study, low-temperature melting glasses of Zn-B-O and Zn-B-Si-O systems were added to $Ca[(Li_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})_{0.8}Ti_{0.2}]O_{3-{\delta}}$ to lower its sintering temperature under $900^{\circ}C$ without losing excellency of dielectric properties. With 15 weight % of Zn-B-Si-O glass and sintered at $875^{\circ}C$, specimen showed density of $4.11g/cm^3$, ${\varepsilon}_r$ of 40.1, $Q{\cdot}f_0$ of 4,869 GHz, and TCF of $-5.9ppm/^{\circ}C$. With 15 weight % of Zn-B-O glass and sintered at $875^{\circ}C$, specimen showed density of $4.14g/cm^3$, ${\varepsilon}_r$ of 40.4, $Q{\cdot}f_0$ of 7,059 GHz, and TCF of $-0.92ppm/^{\circ}C$.

  • Tungsten heavy alloys (W-Ni-Fe) play an important role in various industries because of their excellent mechanical properties, such as the excellent hardness of tungsten, low thermal expansion, corrosion resistance of nickel, and ductility of iron. In tungsten heavy alloys, tungsten nanoparticles allow the relatively low-temperature molding of high-melting-point tungsten and can improve densification. In this study, to improve the densification of tungsten heavy alloy, nanoparticles are manufactured by ultrasonic milling of metal oxide. The physical properties of the metal oxide and the solvent viscosity are selected as the main parameters. When the density is low and the Mohs hardness is high, the particle size distribution is relatively high. When the density is high and the Mohs hardness is low, the particle size distribution is relatively low. Additionally, the average particle size tends to decrease with increasing viscosity. Metal oxides prepared by ultrasonic milling in high-viscosity solvent show an average particle size of less than 300 nm based on the dynamic light scattering and scanning electron microscopy analysis. The effects of the physical properties of the metal oxide and the solvent viscosity on the pulverization are analyzed experimentally.

  • $ZrB_2$-based composites are candidate materials for ultra-high temperature materials (UHTMs). $ZrB_2$ has become an indispensable ingredient in UHTMs, due to its high melting temperature, relatively low density, and excellent resistance to thermal shock or oxidation. $ZrB_2$ powders are usually synthesized by solid state reactions such as carbothermal, borothermal, or combined carbothermal reaction. SiC is added to this system in order to enhance the oxidation resistance of $ZrB_2$. In this study, $ZrB_2$?based composites were successfully synthesized and densified through two different processing paths. $ZrB_2$ or $ZrB_2$ 25 vol.%SiC was fully synthesized from oxide starting materials with reducing agents after heat treatment at 1400$^{\circ}C$. Besides, $ZrB_2$?20 vol.%SiC was fully densified with $B_4C$ as a sintering additive after hot pressing at 1900$^{\circ}C$. The synthesis mechanism and the effect of sintering additives on densification of $ZrB_2$ ?SiC composites were also discussed.

  • The most widely excavated iron artifacts used as weapons or farm tools from central southern regions of Korea were subjects of non-metallic inclusion analysis through metallographic examination, microhardness measurement, and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Through metallographic interpretation and study of the analyzed results, the steel manufacturing and iron smelting using heat processing in the iron artifacts excavated from the central southern region of the ancient Korean peninsula was studied, and the analysis of the non-metallic inclusions mixed within the metallic structures was interpreted as the ternary phase diagram of the oxide to infer the type of iron ores for the iron products and the temperature of the furnace used to smelt them. Most of the ancient forged iron artifacts showed $Al_2O_3/SiO_2$ with high $SiO_2$ contents and relatively low $Al_2O_3$ contents for iron ore, indicating t hat for $Al_2O_3$ below 5%, it is presumed that magnetic iron ores were reduced to bloom iron (sponge iron) with direct-reduction process for production. The temperature for extraction of wustite for $Al_2O_3$ below 1% was found to be $1,020{\sim}1,050^{\circ}C$. Considering the oxide ternary constitutional diagram of glassy inclusions, the steel-manufacturing temperature was presumed to have been near $1,150{\sim}1,280^{\circ}C$ in most cases, and minimum melting temperature of casting iron part excavated in Daeseong-ri. Gyeonggi was near $1,400^{\circ}C$, and it is thought that hypoeutectic cast iron of about 2.3% carbon was casted and fragility of cast iron was improved by decarburizing in solid state.

  • To date, chalcogenide alloy such as $Ge_2Sb_2Te_5$(GST) have not only been rigorously studied for use in Phase Change Random Access Memory(PRAM) applications, but also temperature gap to make different states is not enough to apply to device between amorphous and crystalline state. In this study, we have investigated a new system of phase change media based on the In-Sb-Te(IST) ternary alloys for PRAM. IST chalcogenide thin films were prepared in trench structure (aspect ratio 5:1 of length=500nm, width=100nm) using Tri methyl Indium $(In(CH_3)_4$), $Sb(iPr)_3$ $(Sb(C_3H_7)_3)$ and $Te(iPr)_2(Te(C_3H_7)_2)$ precursors. MOCVD process is very powerful system to deposit in ultra integrated device like 100nm scaled trench structure. And IST materials for PRAM can be grown at low deposition temperature below $200^{\circ}C$ in comparison with GST materials. Although Melting temperature of 1ST materials was $\sim 630^{\circ}C$ like GST, Crystalline temperature of them was ~$290^{\circ}C$; one of GST were $130^{\circ}C$. In-Sb-Te materials will be good candidate materials for PRAM applications. And MOCVD system is powerful for applying ultra scale integration cell.
