  • Vitamin contents of three grades of Korean laver high, medium and low were measured. They were cooked by different methods to examine changes in their vitamin content. Results of this experiment are as follows ; 1. Vitamin contained in loogr of laver amount to 13,200 I.U, for high grade, 16,100 for mediium grade, and 16,400 for low grade . The low -grade laver, which is interwoven with green laver, showed the highest vitamin content. 2. When laver was broiled sheet by sheet, its vitamin loss rate was 11% for high grade, 19% for medium grade, and 20% for low grade. Thus , the one with a higher vitamin content showed a higher vitamin loss rate. When two sheets of laver, which were put upon each other, were broiled, their vitamin loss rates were 2.3% for high grade, 1.73 % for medium grade, and 2.64% for low grade. Thus broiling laver at the unitof two to three sheets together is a way of decreasing the vitamin loss rate. 3. When laver was broiled with salt applied on its surface , its vitamin loss rate was 8.3% for high grade, 13% for medium grade, and 10.9% for low grade. When laver was broied at the unit of two sheets together after salt and sesame oil were added, its vitamin loss rate was 2.2% for high grade, 5.2% for medium grade, and 8.2% for low grade . The one with a higher vitamin content showed a higher vitamin loss rate. 4. When laver was mixed seasoned soysauce, its vitamin loss rate increased in process of time. In 48 hours after laver was mixed with seasoned soysauce , its vitamin loss rate read 24.2%, 27.1% and 35% respectively, for the three grades of laver. Thus the laver mixed with seasoned soysauce has to be used right after so cooked so as to obtained the highest possible vitamin content.

  • Using a low viscosity synthetic traction oil and a low viscosity mineral oil with nearly equal viscosity grade of ISO VG 32, the effect of kind of oil on the fatigue life of bearing steel rollers was examined. A pair of rollers finished the contact surfaces to a mirror-like condition were driven under rolling with sliding conditions of s = -3.2% and a maximum Hertzian stress in the range of $P_H=2.8GPa{\sim}4.0GPa$ was applied in point contact condition. As a result of experiments, the fatigue life with a mineral oil was longer than that with a traction oil under higher stress conditions above $P_H=3.4GPa$. Based on the numerical calculation results of the thermal EHL which simulates the present experiment, the authors discuss the reason why such a difference in the fatigue life comes out.

  • Exhaust emissions in diesel engine are affected by fuel properties, but the reason for this is not clear. Especially, the recent strong interest in using low-grade fuel such as used vegetable oil as alternative diesel fuel demands extensive investigation in order to clarify the exhaust emissions. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of a used vegetable oil as an alternative fuel in a diesel engine in terms of exhaust emissions. The emission concentration of used vegetable oil such as formaldehyde and acrolein is two times than that of diesel fuel. However, since that of alcohol is ten times than that of used vegetable oil and that concentration is very low, it is not a problem for human health.

  • Since the fuel oil of the bunker C grade, which is commonly burnt in the large marine diesel engine, causes the corrosive wear of cylinder liners and piston rings, a cylinder oil of high alkality is frequently used to prevent the wear. This practice, however, brings us an another problem to cause the abnormal wear. In this study the author made an investigation of the mechanism of the abnormal wear by the experiments surveying the influences of the alkality of a cylinder oil and the temperature of cylinder wall on the wear. The major results obtained from this study are as follows; A cylinder oil of low alkality is clearly effective for the preventation of the abnormal wear. Therefore, it is recommended that, prio to using a cylinder oil of high alkality, a cylinder oil of low alkality should be used until bringing an end to the initial wear. It is also observed that the abnormal wear depends largely on the temperature of the cylinder wall, that is, the higher the temperature goes up the severer the wear grows.

  • Utilization of sewage sludge for industrial fuel should be considered in appropriate calory with low emission of environmental pollutants and the amount of sewage sludge for continuously long-time operation. For the low grade fuel(<4,000kcal/kg), one of proper processes is that coal and oil are added into sewage sludge to remove impurities and increase calory(>7,000kcal/kg) and the amount of fuel having sewage sludge. Recently, 2-step agglomeration has been attempted by secondarily agglomerate sewage sludge onto the primary nuclei formed by agglomeration of coal and oil. Furthermore, sawdust and waste oil can substitute about 1/3 each for coal and mineral oil consumed in this process, which will lead to securing alternative energy resources from environmental pollutants as well as cost reduction.

  • The current mandatory domestic biodiesel blending ratio is 3.5%, which is planned to be gradually increased to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. The aim of this study was to improve domestic self-sufficiency in biodiesel raw oil by conducting a technical review on the possibility of utilizing waste oils, such as soup oil, chicken oil, and leather oil, as biodiesel feedstocks. These waste oils have an acid value that is too high to be converted directly into biodiesel. Therefore, a pretreatment to reduce the acid value is necessary. The neutralization process was examined as a potential technology for reducing the acid value. The oil recovery rate of the soup oil after neutralization was significantly low at 37.6 wt%. The oil recovery rates of leather oil and chicken oil were 66.49 wt% and 79.08 wt%, respectively. Based on biodiesel conversion experiment using waste oil with a reduced acid value, the conversions were analyzed as 89 wt%, 91.1 wt%, and 90.5 wt% for soup oil, leather oil, and chicken oil, respectively. Thus, it is technically possible to use soup oil, leather oil, and chicken oil as raw materials for producing biodiesel.

  • By blending of various low boiling point oxygenated agents to lower grade fuels, significant improvements were simultaneously obtained in smoke, CO, PM, SOF and BSEC. Especially, our trends were remarkably obtained by retarding injection timing, by decreasing boiling point and increasing blending contents of additives in case of oxygenated agents rather than non-oxygenated agents. Also, it was revealed that when 20vo1.% DMM added to high viscosity fuels and injection timing was retarded, NOx-smoke trade off relationship was much better than that of ordinary diesel fuel. Thus, lower grade fuels with high viscosity could be expected to be used efficiently and cleanly in diesel operation by blending low boiling point oxygenates.

  • This study investigated the classification of olive oils that are mainly distributed in Korea via imports. The fatty acid contents, degree of color, pigments, anti-oxidants, and sterol contents are analyzed on the different types of olive oil as follows: 10 kinds of extra virgin olive oil, 5 kinds of pure olive oil, and 5 kinds of refined olive-pomace oil. As a result of fatty acid analysis, the majority of oleic acid ($C_{18:1}$) and palmitic acid ($C_{16:0}$), and minority of linoleic acid ($C_{18:2}$) and stearic acid ($C_{18:0}$) were detected without any significant differences between the grades of olive oils. The UV spectrum is related to the ${\Delta}K$, and it is a part of the analysis factor for the purity and degree of degradation of the oil. Extra virgin olive oil had ${\Delta}K$ of almost 0, pure olive oil had 0.07~0.12, and refined olive-pomace oil had 0.1~0.13. These differed from extra virgin oil, and the pure or pomace oil ${\Delta}K$ had a confirmed distinct difference. The color degrees of chlorophyll with a low $L^*$ value and $(-)a^*$ (green) and carotenoid with $(+)b^*$ (yellow) were confirmed to have correlation between extra virgin and other olive oils. To compare chlorophyll and carotenoid as natural pigment in olive oils, 417 nm and the ratio of the absorbance at 480 nm (417/480) was calculated at 1.62 of extra virgin, 1.85 of pure olive oil, and 3.32 of refined olive-pomace oil. Therefore, it will be possible to distinguish when the extra virgin or pure olive oil are mixed with olive-pomace oil. The total amount of tocopherol, an anti-oxidant, were 19.06 in extra virgin, 10.91 in pure olive oil, and 27.88 in refined olive-pomace oil. The high content of tocopherol in pomace oil caused recovery of solvent extraction from olive pulp. Thus, extra virgin oil and pure olive oil were distinguished by olive-pomace oil. Polyphenol compounds in extra virgin olive oil measured high only in ferulic acid with 0.543 mg/kg, caffeic acid with 0.393 mg/kg, and other vanillic acid, vanillin, and p-coumaric acid had similar amount of 0.3 mg/kg. All grade of olive oils had the highest ${\beta}$-sitosterol content. Af (Authenticity factor) value were estimated with campesterol and stigmasterol content ratio (%). Af value was 19.2 in extra virgin olive oil, 17.1 in pure olive oil, 16.9 in refined olive-pomace oil, which were distinctive from sunflower oil with 3.7, corn oil with 2.4, and soybean oil with 2.0. It can provide important indicator of olive oil adulteration with other cheap vegetable oils. The results of this study can be used as a database for the classification of olive oil grade and distinguishing between the different types of oils.
