  • The residual stress in axial stress in the axial direction of the steel filaments has been measured by using a method based on the combination of the focused ion beam (FIB) and high resolution strain mapping program (VIC-2D). That is, the residual stress was calculated from the measured displacement field before and after the introduction of a slot along the steel filaments. The displacement was obtained by the digital correlation analysis of high-resolution scanning electron micrographs, while the slot was introduced by FIB milling with low energy beam. The present measurement revealed that the residual stress within 8% of the magnitude was persistent in the steel filaments fabricated.

  • Bumper back beam is one of the essential structural components of front-end module. It should be designed to withstand a minor bump in low-speed collision, 2.5 mph crash test for example. And weight reduction is always important problem in the design of almost all the parts in car for energy saving. So, the key issues in shape design of a bumper are weight reduction and the performance in 2.5mph crash test. In this study, a light weight and high performance bumper back beam model was developed using analytical approach based on mechanics and FE simulation together.

  • [ $Bi_2Sr_2Ca_nCu_{n+1}O_y(n{\geq}0)$ ] thin film is fabricatedvia two different processes using an ion beam sputtering method i.e. co-deposition and layer-by-layer deposition. A single phase of Bi2212 can be fabricated via the co-deposition process. While it cannot be obtained by the layer-by-layer process. Ultra-low growth rate in our ion beam sputtering system brings out the difference in Bi element adsorption between the two processes and results in only 30% adsorption against total incident Bi amount by layer-by-layer deposition, in contrast to enough Bi adsorption by co-deposition.

  • Recently, application of LED luminaires has been issued for energy saving plan. In this paper, we carried out a study to replace a low efficacy sealed-beam lamp for headlight of railroad vehicles with LED luminaire. Electrical and optical characteristics of the sealed-beam lamp were analyzed and a LED headlight was designed and fabricated. Total luminous efficacy and rated power of the prototype LED headlight were 82 lm/W ; about 5 times higher, and 40W ; about 4 times lower than the sealed-beam lamp, respectively. Especially, lifetime of the sealed-beam lamp is short as 1,000 hours due to the evaporation and vibration of filament, but that of LED headlight is over 30,000 hours long.

  • In the present study, TMD(tuned mass damper) with eddy current damping is proposed to suppress the vibration of a cantilever beam effectively. The advantages of TMD are that it is simple and its performance are excellent at any particular frequency. However, TMD may have the low performance at other frequency. To solve this problem and improve its performance, this study applies the eddy current damping to TMD. This TMD with ECD is named as MTMD(magnetically tuned mass damper). MTMD is designed for the vibration suppression of a cantilever beam. The mathematical modeling, simulation, and experiments of the cantilever beam with MTMD are performed. From analytic and experimental results, it can be concluded that the vibration suppression performance of MTMD are excellent.

  • Carbon micropatterns (CMs) were fabricated from a negative-type SU-8 photoresist by proton ion beam lithography and pyrolysis. Well-defined negative-type SU-8 micropatterns were formed by proton ion beam lithography at the optimized fluence of $1{\times}10^{15}ions\;cm^{-2}$ and then pyrolyzed to form CMs. The crosslinked network structures formed by proton irradiation were converted to pseudo-graphitic structures by pyrolysis. The fabricated CMs showed a good electrical conductivity of $1.58{\times}10^2S\;cm^{-1}$ and a very low surface roughness.

  • TEM is a powerful tool for semiconductor material analyses in structure or biological sample in micro structure. TEM observation need to make to coincide specimens for special purpose. in this paper, we have experimented for minimum surface damage on bulk wafer and patterned specimen by various conditions such as accelerating energy, depth of ion beam, ion milling types, and etc. in various specimen preparation methods by FIB (Focus Ion Beam). The optimal qualified specimens are contain low mounts of surface damage(about 5 nm) on patterned specimen.

  • Electron beam weldability of 9%Ni steels has been investigated to apply EBW to the construction of LNG storage tank. While mechanical properties of welded joints were satisfied by ASTM specification, impact energy of weld metal was as low as 27 - 55J at $-196^{\circ}C$. As the result of Ni wires inserted at the joint to be welded, Ni content of weld metal was increased to about 10%, resulting on the improvement of impact toughness to 110 ~ 120J at $-196^{\circ}C$. This improvement of impact toughness in weld metal was due to the formation of tempered martensite and retained austenite. Above results indicate that, if Ni content of weld metal was increased about 10% by Ni wires addition, electron beam welded 9%Ni steels weld metal had sufficient impact energy necessary for a LNG storage tank.

  • Monopulse technique has been widely used for a bearing estimation of a desired signal. This method can estimate the bearing of the signal with only one pulse, so computational load and complexity are low and its processes are simple. But if the desired signal incidents with interferences or multiple signals exist in the beams, the method fails to estimate correct signal angle. To solve this problem, the method to use adaptive array was proposed. In conventional adaptive array methods, sum beam was formed with fixed weights and ifference beam was formed with adaptive weights determined to minimize beamformer output power with one or more linear constraints, or an algorithm to minimize each sum beam and difference beams simultaneously using adaptively formed one basic beam. Theroretical analyses and simulation results show that the performance of the proposed method is superior to that of conventional algorithms.

  • In this paper, we report the test results of a small-scale prototype that implements an analogue-beam-formed phased antenna array in the E-band. A four-channel dual-conversion receive RF module for 71~76 GHz frequency band has been developed and integrated with a linear end-fire antenna array. Measured performance is very close to the simulated results. An ad-hoc wireless communication system has also been demonstrated. Low BER was measured for an 8PSK data stream at 1.5 Gbps with the receive array beam formed in the direction of arrival of the transmitted signal. To our knowledge this is the first steerable antenna array reported to date in the E-band.
