  • A conventional power supply of a microwave oven has a 60Hz transformer and high voltage capacitor(HVC). Though it is very simple and has low cost, it has several problems such as large size, heavy weight and low efficiency To improve these problems, various high frequency inverter type power supply have been investigated and developed in recent years. But these cost is higher than the conventional one due to additional control circuit, fast switching devces. In this paper, a novel pulse power supply for microwave oven using high frequency transformer embedded HVC(High Voltage Capacitor) is proposed for down-sizing, cost reduction and efficient improvement. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed transformer, an equivalent circuit of transformer embedded HVC is derived and it's characteristic is described. And the validity of the proposed pulse power supply embedded HVC-high frequency transformer is shown by simulations and experiments accroding to various operating conditions.

  • A new control method for a single-phase active power filter, based on a load current estimation using a DC capacitor voltage of active power filter without sensing nonlinear load current, is proposed in this paper. Because the method proposed can remove the load current sensor in comparison with a conventional method sensing the load current and DC capacitor voltage together, it can make the active power filter easy installation, low cost, small size with no performance detriment. In addition, sample-hold technique and proportional control method is adopted to control the DC capacitor voltage and as no delay element such as LPF or PI control in the conventional method is used, the transient response is fast and good. Operation of a single-phase active power filter which consist of eight mode is explained according to utility voltage, compensation current and switch state, and compensation characteristics of active power filter using proposed method is verified by experiment.

  • Recent progress in the integration of the ferroelectric random access memories (FRAM) has attracted much interest. Strontium bismuth tantalate(SBT) is one of the most attractive materials for use in nonvolatile-memory applications due to low-voltage operations, low leakage current, and its excellent fatigue-free property. High-density FRAMs operated at a low voltage below 1.5V are applicable to mobile devices operated by battery. SBT films thinner than 0.1 #m can be operated at a low voltage, because the coercive voltage (Vc) decreases as the film thickness is reduced. In addition, the thickness of the SBT film will have to be reduced so it can fit between adjacent storage nodes in a pedestal type capacitor in future FRAMs.

  • In general, a power decoupling method using electrolytic capacitor is used to solve a problem that appears 120[Hz] ripple of grid at the PV module output. But electrolytic capacitor has a effect on the short lifetime and low reliability of PV system. Therefore, studies which replace the large electrolytic capacitor with small film capacitor have been researched in resent years. This paper proposes flyback inverter which can be replaced with film capacitor by connecting the circuit implementing zero voltage switching in PV side. The proposed system is validated by PSIM simulation.

  • High voltage ceramic capacitors are widely applied in power electronic circuits, such as filters, snubbers, and resonant circuits, due to their excellent features of high voltage endurance and low aging. This paper presents a result of failure analysis and reliability evaluation for high voltage ceramic capacitors. The failure nodes and failure mechanisms were identified in order to understand the failure physics in a component. The causes of failure mechanisms for zero resistance phenomena under withstanding voltage test in high voltage ceramic capacitors molded by epoxy resin were studied by establishing an effective closed-loop failure analysis. Also, the condition for dielectric breakdown was investigated. Particular emphasis was placed on breakdown phenomena at the ceramic-epoxy interface. The validity of the results in this study was confirmed by the results of accelerated testing. Thermal shock test as well as pressure cooker test for high voltage ceramic capacitor mounted on a magnetron were implemented. Delamination between ceramic and epoxy, which, might cause electrical short in underlying circuitry, can occur during curing or thermal cycling. The results can be conveniently used to quickly identify defective lots, determine mean time to failure (MTTF) of each lot at the level of Inspection, and detect major changes in the vendors processes.

  • This paper presents a 1.92 kW resonant converter for medium voltage applications that uses low voltage stress MOSFETs (500V) to achieve zero voltage switching (ZVS) turn-on. In the proposed converter, four MOSFETs are connected in series to limit the voltage stress of the power switches at half of the input voltage. In addition, three resonant circuits are adopted to share the load current and to reduce the current stress of the passive components. Furthermore, the transformer primary and secondary windings are connected in series to balance the output diode currents for medium power applications. Split capacitors are adopted in each resonant circuit to reduce the current stress of the resonant capacitors. Two balance capacitors are also used to automatically balance the input capacitor voltage in every switching cycle. Based on the circuit characteristics of the resonant converter, the MOSFETs are turned on under ZVS. If the switching frequency is less than the series resonant frequency, the rectifier diodes can be turned off under zero current switching (ZCS). Experimental results from a prototype with a 750-800 V input and a 48V/40A output are provided to verify the theoretical analysis and the effectiveness of the proposed converter.

  • This paper describes novel high voltage capacitor(HVC) embedded high frequency transformer and novel inverter power supply topology for driving magnetron in microwave oven. This transformer is used to achieve downsizing, low-cost and efficiency improvement. Proposed transformer has HVC in its secondary winding. Therefore, this transformer does not need external high voltage capacitor which used in conventional power supply. As use of this transformer, output voltage is shifted from ground to above 2000[V] and efficiency of microwave oven can be improved. The weight of proposed transformer is about one sixth of conventional one and efficiency is improved by seven percent compared to the efficiency of the conventional system.

  • In this paper, a versatile three-input five-output universal capacitor-grounded voltage-mode filter is proposed. The circuit employs two differential voltage current conveyors as active elements together with two grounded capacitors and four resistors as passive elements. The proposed configuration can be used as either a single-input five-output or three-input two-output. Unlike the previously reported works, it can simultaneously realize five different generic filtering signals: lowpass, bandpass, highpass, bandreject, and allpass. It still maintains the following advantages: (i) the employment of all grounded capacitors, (ii) no need to employ inverting-type input signals, (iii) no need to impose component choice, (iv) orthogonal control of the resonance angular frequency ${\omega}_o$ and the quality factor Q, and (v) low active and passive sensitivity performances.

  • The commutation operation of the current source converter for switched reluctance motor drives is analyzed in this paper. The commutation operation in the current source converter consists of two modes. At turn-off of phase switch, the phase current decreases sinusoidally, and the sum of two phase currents during commutation period is constant. At this time, the capacitor voltage increases quickly with changing polarity and decreases slowly when another phase switches turn on or off. Frequency of step-down DC chopper in the current source converter is low because of the dump such as BJTs and GTOs are possible as phase switches instead of Power MOSFET and IGBTS. They may result in reductions of conduction losses and manufacturing cost in the current source converter comparing to the voltage source converter of SRM.
