  • In late years, from a trend for ecology of auto motive engine, low emission and low fuel consumption of engine become a social assignment. At the same time, the high output (high efficiency) is required, too. In order to meet those requirements, in comparison with conventional engines, lean A/F (Air fuel ratio) setting is becoming popular for the high performance engines of late years. Exhaust valve seat (sintered material) used in these engines has a problem in wear resistance, because it is exposed to the surroundings that is clean and a high temperature in comparison with the conventional engines. Therefore, wear mechanism with lean A/F of engine was analyzed. The exhaust valve seat (sintered material), that was superior in wear resistance, was developed.

  • A zinc borosilicate glass having a low softening temperature of $490^{\circ}C$ has been investigated as a protective layer for Ag patterns against chemical reactions with a $I^-/I_3^-$ electrolyte in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). A thick glass layer was prepared by the typical screen printing and firing processes to obtain a final thickness of ${\sim}5{\mu}m$. The chemical leaching performance of the glass layer in the electrolyte revealed that the reactive Ag pattern can be significantly protected by utilizing the low softening protective layer. The electrical resistance of the FTO-coated glass substrate was effectively maintained at a low value of ${\sim}27{\Omega}$ as long as the glass layer was well densified at a sufficiently high temperature of ${\sim}520^{\circ}C$. The transmittance of the layer was near 60%, depending on the firing temperature of the glass layer.

  • The tailored surface modification of electrode materials is crucial to realize the wanted electronic and electrochemical properties. In this regard, a dexterous carbon encapsulation technique can be one of the most essential preparation methods for the electrode materials for lithium rechargeable batteries. For this purpose, DL-malic acid ($C_4H_6O_5$) was here used as the carbon source enabling an amorphous carbon layer to be formed on the surface of Si nanoparticles at enough low temperature to maintain their own physical or chemical properties. Various structural characterizations proved that the bulk structure of Si doesn't undergo any discernible change except for the evolution of C-C bond attributed to the formed carbon layer on the surface of Si. The improved electrochemical performance of the carbon-encapsulated Si compared to Si can be attributed to the enhanced electrical conductivity by the surface carbon layer as well as its role as a buffering agent to absorb the volume expansion of Si during lithiation and delithiation.

  • In this work, we investigated simple Aㅣ/TCO/a-Si:H(n)/c-Si(p)/Al hetero-junction solar cells prepared by low temperature processes, unlike conventional thermal diffused c-Si solar cells. a-Si:H/c-Si hetero-junction solar cells are processed by low temperature deposition of n-type hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) films by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition on textured and flat p-type silicon substrate. A detailed investigation was carried out to acquire optimization and compatibility of amorphous layer, TCO (ZnO:Al) layer depositions by changing the plasma process parameters. As front TCO and back contact, ZnO:Al and AI were deposited by rf magnetron sputtering and e-beam evaporation, respectively. The photovoltaic conversion efficiency under AMI.5 and the quantum efficiency on $1cm^2$ sample have been reported. An efficiency of $12.5\%$ is achieved on hetero-structure solar cells based on p-type crystalline silicon.

  • Present thin film solar cells with hydrogenated amorphous silicon oxide (a-SiO:H) as an absorber suffer from low fill factor(FF) of 61~64 [%] in spite of its benefits related to high open circuit voltage ($V_{oc}$). Since degraded quality of a-SiO:H absorber by alloying with oxygen can affect the FF, we aimed to achieve high photosensitivity by minimizing $CO_2$ gas addition. Improving optical gap($E_{opt}$) has been attained by strong hydrogen dilution combined with lowering substrate temperature down to 100 [$^{\circ}C$]. Small amount of the $CO_2$ was added in order to disturb microcrystalline formation by high hydrogen dilution. The developed a-SiO:H has high photosensitivity (${\sim}2{\times}10^5$) and high $E_{opt}$ of 1.85 [eV], which contributed to attain remarkable FF of 74 [%] and high $V_{oc}$ (>1 [V]). As a result, high power conversion efficiency of 7.18 [%] was demonstrated by using very thin absorber layer of only 100 [nm], even though we processed all experiment at extremely low temperature of 100 [$^{\circ}C$].

  • This article examines the modification of surface properties of ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) with nanoscale ceramic particles to fabricate an improved composite with butadiene-nitrile rubber (BNR). Adhesion force data showed that ceramic zeolite particles on the surface of UHMWPE modulated the surface state of the polymer and increased its compatibility with BNR. Atomic force microscopy phase images showed that UHMWPE made up the microphase around the zeolite particles and formed the evolving layer with a complex interface. The complex interface resulted in improvements in the mechanical properties of the composite, especially its low-temperature resistance coefficients, thereby improving its performance in low-temperature applications.

  • This work introduces a simple one-reactor adsorption desalination system that harnesses low temperature heat sources (solar energy, waste heat), which has been experimentally studied to elicit the most suitable design parameters and operating conditions. The design process of the system was divided into three parts to reflect the operating principle of desalination technology with application of adsorption processes. First, the evaporator for the vaporization of saline water was designed, then the reactor for the adsorption and release of the steam, followed by the condenser for condensation of the fresh water. The specific water yield is measured experimentally with respect to the time while controlling parameters such as heat source temperatures, coolant temperatures, system switching and half-cycle operational times. The present system well demonstrates the applicability of silica gel in relation to adsorption technologies that utilize low temperature heat sources ranging from 60 to $80^{\circ}C$, such as solar energy and waste heat.

  • The thermohydrodynamic(THD) performance of a large tilting pad journal bearing in laminar and turbulent flow regions is investigated experimentally. The continuous shaft surface temperature, and bearing surface temperature are measured along with the shaft speed and the bearing load for various flow rates. It is observed that the shaft surface temperature is constant in the circumferential direction and increases with the increase of shaft speed in both low and high shaft speed region, however, there exist transition region where the shaft surface temperature decreases with the increase of shaft speed. When the turbulence occurs in the lubricant film, both the inlet and maximum bearing surface temperature steeply increase and the temperature gradient in the circumferential direction decreases.

  • Experiments were performed to verify if performance and characteristic curves obtained from the temperature differential defrosting method, where surface temperature is measured to judge defrosting condition, can be reproduced by the photoelectric technology where defrosting condition is judged by photoelectric sensors. The output voltage of a phototransistor and heating capacity, power consumption, and surface temperature of the outdoor heat exchanger are compared. The results showed that the photoelectric sensors can be used as a defrost control device. On-off control timings in temperature differential defrosting method are in good agreement with those predicted by the high and low threshold output voltages of the photoelectric sensor.

  • Accurate temperature measurement is a key factor to implement the rapid thermal processing(RTP). A temperature estimation method using acoustic wave has been proposed to overcome the inaccuracy and contamination problem of the previous methods. The proposed method, however, may suffer from the offset and low resolution problem since it is implemented in the time domain. This paper presents a temperature estimation method using the phase detection of acoustic wave. Based on the frequency domain approach, the proposed technique increases the resolution of the measured temperature and reduces the effect of noise. We investigate the performance of the proposed method via experiments.
