Organic Light Emitting Transistors for Flexible Displays

  • Organic light emitting transistors (OLET) which are vertically combined with the organic static induction transistor (OSIT) and organic light emitting diode (OLED) are fabricated and the device characteristics are investigated. High luminance modulations by relatively low gate voltages are obtained. In order to realize the flexible electronic circuits and displays, we have fabricated OSIT on plastic substrates. The OSIT fabricated on plastic substrate show almost same characteristics comparing with those of nonflexible OSIT on glass substrate. The OLET described here is a suitable element for flexible sheet displays.

  • In 2010, Airworthiness standard for VLA(Very Light Airplane) category was newly introduced as KAS Part VLA. KAS Part VLA is an adaption of EASA CS-VLA which was developed to reduce unnecessary burden of manufacturer of very light, simple, single-reciprocating-engine/propeller powered airplanes having low stall speeds by tailoring some requirements of Part 23. In this paper, difference and similarity of structural requirements between Part 23 and VLA was analyzed.

The effects of LED light quality on ecophysiological and growth responses of Epilobium hirsutum L., a Korean endangered plant, in a smart farm facility

  • Background: Epilobium hirsutum L. is designated as an endangered plant in South Korea located in Asia, due to the destruction of its habitats through the development of wetlands. Therefore, in this study, in order to find a light condition suitable for the growth and ecophysiological responses of Epilobium hirsutum L., those of this plant under treatment with various light qualities in a smart farm were measured. Results: In order to examine the changes in the physiological and growth responses of Epilobium hirsutum L. according to the light qualities, the treatment with light qualities of the smart farm was carried out using the red light: blue light irradiation time ratios of 1:1, 1:1/2, and 1:1/5 and a red light: blue light: white light irradiation time ratio of 1:1:1. As a result, the ecophysiological responses (difference between leaf temperature and atmospheric temperature, transpiration rate, net photosynthetic rate, intercellular CO2 partial pressure, photosynthetic quantum efficiency) to light qualities appeared differently according to the treatments with light qualities. The increase in the blue light ratio increased the difference between the leaf temperature and the atmospheric temperature and the photosynthetic quantum efficiency and decreased the transpiration rate and the intercellular CO2 partial pressure. On the other hand, the white light treatment increased the transpiration rate and intercellular CO2 partial pressure and decreased the temperature difference between the leaf temperature and the ambient temperature and photosynthetic quantum efficiency. Conclusions: The light condition suitable for the propagation by the stolons, which are the propagules of Epilobium hirsutum L., in the smart farm, is red, blue and white mixed light with high net photosynthetic rates and low difference between leaf temperature and atmospheric temperature.

  • Most background subtraction methods focus on dynamic and complex scenes without considering robustness against noise. This paper proposes a background subtraction algorithm based on dictionary learning and sparse coding for handling low light conditions. The proposed method formulates background modeling as the linear and sparse combination of atoms in the dictionary. The background subtraction is considered as the difference between sparse representations of the current frame and the background model. Assuming that the projection of the noise over the dictionary is irregular and random guarantees the adaptability of the approach in large noisy scenes. Experimental results divided in simulated large noise and realistic low light conditions show the promising robustness of the proposed approach compared with other competing methods.

A Novel Technique to Miniaturize Microstrip Antennas with a Locally Non-Homogeneous Substrate Configuration

  • Microstrip antennas are attractive for many applications because of their compact size, low profile, and light weight. Recently, the demand for the miniaturization of the personal communication equipment has been increasing along with the proliferation of personal communication systems. Thus, the development of small antenna has been highly demanded. In this paper, a new technique to reduce the overall dimension of a microstrip antenna with a locally non-homogeneous substrate configuration is proposed. The miniaturized microstrip antenna for a repeater system in a mobile communication cellular band(824~894 MHz) is designed with the proposed technique, and commercialized with low cost, light weight, and small size. Comparison between simulations, based on Agilent Technologies HFSS software, and measurements are provided. The proposed method will be more attractive for a light-weight, small-size, and low-cost microstrip array design. This paper also presents the bandwidth improvement technique for under-coupled microstrip patch antenna with a tuning stub.

버퍼층과 음전극에 따른 유기 발광 소자의 전기적 특성과 발광 효율 (Electrical Properties and Luminous Efficiency in Organic Light-Emitting Diodes Depending on Buffer Layer and Cathodes)

  • We have studied electrical properties and luminous efficiency of organic light-emitting diodes(OLEDs) with different buffer layer and cathodes in a temperature range of 10 K and 300 K. Four different device structures were made. The OLEDs are based on the molecular compounds, N,N'-diphenyl-N,N'-bis(3-methylphenyl)-1,1'-biphenyl-4,4'-diamine (TPD) as a hole transport, tris(8-hydroxyquinolinato) aluminum(III) (Alq$_3$) as an electron transport and omissive layer, and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) :poly (styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS ) as a buffer layer. And LiAl was used as a cathode. Among the devices, the ITO/PEDOT:PSS/TPD/Alq$_3$/LiAl structure has a low energy-barrier height for charge injection and show a good luminous efficiency. We have got a highly efficient and low-voltage operating device using the conductive PEDOT:PSS and low work-function LiAl. From current-voltage characteristics with temperature variation, conduction mechanisms are explained SCLC (space charge limited current) and tunneling one. We have also studied energy barrier height and luminous efficiency at various temperature.

악천후 시 낮은 도로조명을 이용한 도로 시인성 향상에 대한 연구 (A Research on the Improvement of Visibility Using Low Deck Lighting in Bad Weather)

  • We investigate a fog-detection CCT control system using low deck lighting as a solution to the forward visibility of pole-type street lamps employed on existing roads. The lighting standards were met with a light source that has less compared with those of pole-type street lamps. The results show that the transmission rate was increased by changing the color temperature by automatically recognizing fog in bad weather and minimizing the phenomenon of lighting. In addition, it was allowed to create a safer and more comfortable driving environment for drivers owing to flicker or light pollution of existing pole-type street lamps. As a result, if lighting is used at a lower level than pole-type street lamps, the accident rate caused by securing the driver's forward visibility can be reduced sharply and existing problems can be resolved.

Smartphone Use at Night Affects Melatonin Secretion, Body Temperature, and Heart Rate

  • In the present study, we investigated the physiological effects of smartphone use at night when the display luminance and white balance were differently manipulated. Two levels of luminance and two types of white balance were combined to form four types of displays. Subjects were instructed to use smartphones between 23:00 to 01:00 twice a week for two weeks, and for each trial, subjects were given one of the four display types. Melatonin concentration in the saliva, body temperature and heart rate were measured before and after each experiment. The experimental result showed that the low luminance display supported melatonin secretion and thermoregulation compared to the high luminance display. With regard to the white balance, higher melatonin level was observed when using the display that filtered blue light. The low luminance display together with yellowish tint best supported restful sleep at night in terms of every physiological response. This study collectively demonstrates that bright and blue light emitted from smartphone displays adversely affect melatonin secretion, body temperature, and heart rate, and therefore, suggests the use of a display with low luminance or a display that filters blue light for a restful sleep at night.

저조도 환경에서 화소의 휘도 변환 함수를 이용한 에지 검출에 관한 연구 (A Study on Edge Detection using Pixel Brightness Transfer Function in Low Light Level Environments)

  • 에지 검출은 대부분의 영상 처리 응용에서 필수적인 전처리 과정으로서 여러 분야에서 널리 사용되고 있으며, 기존의 에지 검출 방법에는 Sobel, Roberts, Laplacian, LoG(Laplacian of Gaussian) 등이 있다. 기존의 에지 검출 방법들은 저조도 환경에서 화소의 휘도 변화가 적기 때문에 에지 검출 특성이 미흡하게 나타난다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 이러한 문제점을 해결하기 위해, 전처리 과정에서 휘도 변환 함수를 사용한 알고리즘과 국부 마스크의 평균 및 표준편 차에 따른 가중치를 적용하여 에지를 검출하는 알고리즘을 제안하였다. 그리고 제안한 알고리즘의 성능을 평가하기 위해, 기존의 Sobel, Roberts, Prewitt, Laplacian, LoG 에지 검출 방법들과 비교하였다.

자율주행을 위한 동적 객체 인식 방법에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Motion Object Detection Method for Autonomous Driving)

  • Dynamic object recognition is an important task for autonomous vehicles. Since dynamic objects exhibit a higher collision risk than static objects, our own trajectories should be planned to match the future state of moving elements in the scene. Time information such as optical flow can be used to recognize movement. Existing optical flow calculations are based only on camera sensors and are prone to misunderstanding in low light conditions. In this regard, to improve recognition performance in low-light environments, we applied a normalization filter and a correction function for Gamma Value to the input images. The low light quality improvement algorithm can be applied to confirm the more accurate detection of Object's Bounding Box for the vehicle. It was confirmed that there is an important in object recognition through image prepocessing and deep learning using YOLO.
