Determining the Rotation Periods of an Inactive LEO Satellite and the First Korean Space Debris on GEO, KOREASAT 1

  • Inactive space objects are usually rotating and tumbling as a result of internal or external forces. KOREASAT 1 has been inactive since 2005, and its drift trajectory has been monitored with the optical wide-field patrol network (OWL-Net). However, a quantitative analysis of KOREASAT 1 in regard to the attitude evolution has never been performed. Here, two optical tracking systems were used to acquire raw measurements to analyze the rotation period of two inactive satellites. During the optical campaign in 2013, KOREASAT 1 was observed by a 0.6 m class optical telescope operated by the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI). The rotation period of KOREASAT 1 was analyzed with the light curves from the photometry results. The rotation periods of the low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite ASTRO-H after break-up were detected by OWL-Net on April 7, 2016. We analyzed the magnitude variation of each satellite by differential photometry and made comparisons with the star catalog. The illumination effect caused by the phase angle between the Sun and the target satellite was corrected with the system tool kit (STK) and two line element (TLE) technique. Finally, we determined the rotation period of two inactive satellites on LEO and geostationary Earth orbit (GEO) with light curves from the photometry. The main rotation periods were determined to be 5.2 sec for ASTRO-H and 74 sec for KOREASAT 1.

  • FORMOSAT-3 was launched in April of 2006. It consists of six low earth orbit (LEO) satellites that will be eventually deployed to an orbit at 800 km height. Its scientific goal is to utilize the radio occultation (RO) signals to measure the bending angles when the GPS signals transect the atmosphere. The bending angle is then used to infer atmospheric parameters, including refractivity, temperature, pressure, and relative humidity fields of global distributions through inversion schemes and auxiliary information. The expected number of RO events is around 2500 per day, of which 200 events or so fall into the polar region. Consequently, the FORMOSAT-3 observations are expected to play a key role to improve our knowledge in the weather forecasting and space physics research in the polar region. In this paper, we use temperature profiles retrieved from FORMOSAT-3 RO observations to study the climatology of gravity wave activity in the polar region. FORMOSAT-3 can provide about 200 RO observations a day in the polar region, much more than previous GPS RO missions, and, hence, more detailed climatology of gravity wave activity can be obtained.

  • This paper describes attitude determination algorithm for the low earth orbit(LEO) spacecraft using stellar inertial sensors. The cascaded gyro/star tracker extended Kalman filter is constructed to fuse two sensor data. And then the smoothing of the measurement are proposed for an unreasonable jump of star tracker. The smoothing algorithm for the rejection of star tracker error jumps is designed by scalar adaptive filter. The proposed algorithms operate to process the measurement of gyro/star tracker Kalman filter, therefore, it is comparatively simple to apply these methods to other integration systems. Simulations to gyro/star tracker integrated system show that the proposed method is effective.

  • The Ring Laser Gyroscope makes use of the Sagnac effect within a resonant ring cavity of a He-Ne laser and has more accuracy than the other gyros. The Low Earth Orbit satellite for observatory use require the high accuracy Gyro to control and determine the altitude because of the need of payload pointing accuracy. In this paper, The theory of the Path Length Control is explained. The electrical design of Path Length Controller Is described. The Design for Path Length Controller is composed of the demodulator, integrator, phase shifter, high voltage amplifier. We apply the circuit to 28cm square ring laser gyro and get the test results.

Attitude determination for three-axis stabilized satellite

  • This paper presents the on-board attitude determination algorithm for LEO (Low Earth Orbit) three-axis stabilized spacecraft. Two advanced star trackers and a three-axis Inertial Reference Unit (IRU) are assumed to be attitude sensors. The gyro in the IRU provides a direct measurement of the attitude rates. However, the attitude estimation error increases with time due to the gyro drift and noise. An update filter with measurements of star trackers and/or sun sensor is designed to update these gyro drift bias and to compensate the attitude error. Kalman Filter is adapted for the on-board update filter algorithm. Simulation results will be presented to investigate the attitude pointing performance.

  • Radio occultation (RO) has been used in the planetary science since Microlab-1 was launched in 1995. With the RO technique, the profiles of atmosphere and the global atmospheric data can be obtained. In 2006, Taiwan launched six low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites as the RO constellation mission, known as FORMOSAT-3. In order to retrieve the RO data from original data, a retrieval algorithm, NCURO, is developed. The input of NCURO algorithm is mainly the excess phase of GPS signal, and the output is the dry pressure and dry temperature. Using temperature profiles retrieved by NCURO algorithm, temperature perturbation and potential energy of gravity wave have been evaluated. In this paper, the retrieval algorithm and the global distribution of energy of gravity waves are described and demonstrated.

  • In order to operate Low Earth Orbit(LEO) satellite on space, technical requirements and administrative procedure which are defined by the International Telecommunication Union(ITU) should be followed on satellite development. Main technical requirements to follow are purpose of use, bandwidth, Radio Frequency(RF) intensity, and constraints on new satellite network about existing satellite networks according to frequency spectrum. Such ITU's requirements are reflected and designed on system specification and space to ground interface control document. In order to have a right and protection about using the satellite network on space, the satellite network has to be registered on Master International Frequency Register(MIFR) and procedure for this has to be followed. Coordination with countries raising objection is needed in order to register. And reference and method for coordination are also needed.

Comparative Study on the Performance of Small Satellites Launch Vehicle Employing ElecPump Cycle Upper Stage Engine (전기펌프 사이클 상단 엔진을 적용한 소형발사체 성능 비교연구)

  • The performance analysis of the small satellites launch vehicle using the electric pump cycle as the upper stage engines was performed. The first stage is the launch vehicle that uses the test launch vehicle of the Korea Space Launch Vehicle II and the second stage employs elecpump cycle engine that uses liquid methane and kerosene (RP-1) as fuel. A model for the mass estimation was presented and the analysis was conducted for the range of thrust of 20 to 40 kN and combustion pressure of 3 to 6 MPa with a nozzle expansion ratio of 60 to 100. The mixture ratio with the maximum velocity increment was calculated and the performance of the LEO and SSO payload were calculated from the stage mass estimation. In both the cases, liquid methane, and RP-1 showed maximum payload for 20 kN thrust, 3 MPa combustion pressure, and the nozzle expansion ratio of 100, with a mixture ratio of 3.49 for liquid methane and 2.75 for RP-1. In addition, the ditching points of the first stage and the fairing in the LEO mission were analyzed using ASTOS.
