  • Corrosion characteristic of the duplex Al-Mg-Si alloys with low, commercial and high solute contents were studied using an anodic polarization test in 1M NaCl solution at room temperature. Polarization range condition of the experiment were form .0.3V to .1.3V with a 0.2 mV scanning speed. The exchange current density means corrosion rate of the low solute alloy was low as about $16.29{\mu}A/cm^2$, and that of the high solute alloy was high as $84.92{\mu}A/cm^2$. The difference was mainly attributed to the inter-granular precipitates $Mg_2Si$ and Si which could make a galvanic corrosion on the aluminum base. The amount of precipitates was greater in high solute alloy at mainly in grain boundary. While, the extruded alloys had better corrosion resistance than the cast alloy because the silicon precipitates become coarse during the extrusion process.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the dissolution components during corrosion of amalgams and to identify surface corrosion products in the modified Fusayama artificial saliva. Four type of amalgam alloys were used: low copper lathe cut amalgam alloy (Cavex 68), low copper spherical amalgam alloy (Caulk Spherical Alloy), high copper admixed amalgam alloy (Dispersalloy) and high copper single composition amalgam alloy (Tytin). Each amalgam alloy and Hg were triturated according to the manufacturer's direction by means of mechanical amalgamator (Capmaster, S.S.White), and then the triturated mass was inserted into the cylindrical metal mold which was 10mm in diameter and 2.0mm in height and condensed with compression of 150kg/$cm^2$ using oil pressor. The specimens were removed from the mold and stored at room temperature for 7 days and cleansed with distiled water for 30 minutes in an ultrasonic cleaner. The specimens were immersed in the modified Fusayama artificial saliva for the periods of 1 month, 3 months and 6 months. The amounts of Hg, Cu, Sn and Zn dissolved from each amalgam specimen immersed in the artificial saliva for the periods of 1 month, 3 months and 6 months were measured using Inductivity Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry (ICPQ-1000, Shimadzu, Japan) and amount of Ag dissolved from amalgam specimen was measured using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (Atomic Absorption/Flame emission spectrophotometer M-670, Shimadzu, Japan). A surface corrosion products of specimens were analysed using Electron Spectroscopy Chemical Analyser (ESCA PHI-558, PERKIN ELMER, U.S.A.). The secondary image and back scattered image of corroded surface of specimens was observed under the SEM, and the corroded surface of specimens was analysed with the EDX. The following results were obtained. 1. The dissolution amount of Cu was the most in high copper admixed amalgam(Dispersalloy) and the least in high copper single composition amalgam(Tytin). 2. Sn and Zn were dissolved during all the experiment periods, and dissolution amounts were decreased as the time elapsed. 3. Initial surface corrosion products were ZnO and SnO. 4. Corrosion of ${\gamma}$ and ${\gamma}_2$ phase in low copper amalgams was observed and Ag-Cu eutectic alloy phase was corroded in low copper spherical amalgam(Caulk Sperical Alloy). 5. Corrosion of ${\gamma}$ and $\eta$' phase in high copper amalgams was observed and Ag-Cu eutectic alloy phase was corroded in high copper admixed amalgam(Dispersalloy). 6. Sn-Cl was produced in the subsurface of low copper amalgams and high copper admixed amalgam.

  • The current study seeks to examine the effects of V and C additions on the mechanical and low thermal expansion properties of a high strength invar base alloy. The base alloy (Fe-36%Ni-0.9%Co-2.75%Mo-0.7Cr-0.23Mn-0.17Si-0.3%C, wt.%) contains $Mo_2C$ carbides, which form as the main precipitate. In contrast, alloys with additions of 0.4%V+0.3%C (alloy A) or 0.4%V+0.45%C (alloy B) contain $Mo_2C$+[V, Mo]C carbides. The average thermal expansion coefficients of these high strength invar based alloys were measured in the range of $5.16{\sim}5.43{\mu}m/m{\cdot}^{\circ}C$ for temperatures of $15{\sim}230^{\circ}C$. Moreover, alloy B showed lower thermal expansion coefficient than the other alloys in this temperature range. For the mechanical properties, the [V, Mo]C improved hardness and strengths(Y.S. and T.S.) of the high strength invar base alloy. T.S.(tensile strength) and Y.S.(yield strength) of hot forged alloy B specimen were measured at 844.6MPa and 518.0MPa, respectively. The tensile fractography of alloy B exhibited a ductile transgranular fracture mode and voids were initiated between the [V, Mo]C particles and the matrix. Superior properties of high strength and low thermal expansion coefficient can be obtained by [V, Mo]C precipitation in alloy B with the addition of 0.4%V and 0.45%C.

  • In this study, we investigated the effects of copper and copper-alloy on the frictional and wear properties of low-steel friction material. The proportions of copper and copper-alloy in the brake friction materials used in passenger cars are very high (approximately 5-20% weight), and these materials have significant effects on friction and wear characteristics. In this study, the effects of cupric ingredients, such as the copper fiber and brass fiber, are investigated using the friction materials based on commercial formulations. After the copper and brass fibers from the same formulation were removed, the frictional and wear characteristics were evaluated to determine the influence of the copper and copper-alloy. We evaluated the frictional and wear characteristics by simulating various braking conditions using a 1/5 scale dynamometer. The results show that the friction material containing copper and brass fibers have excellent frictional stability and a low wear rate compared to the friction material that does not contain copper and brass fibers. These results are attributed to the excellent ductility, moderate melting point, high strength, and excellent thermal conductivity of copper and copper-alloy. We analyzed the surfaces of the friction materials before and after the performing the friction tests using a scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscope, confocal microscope, and roughness tester to verify the frictional behavior of copper and copper-alloy. In future studies, it will be applied to the development of copper-free friction materials based on the results of this study.

  • Likelihood of failure for the external corrosion of carbon and low alloy steels, which affect to a risk of facilities, was analyzed quantitatively through the risk based inspection using API-581 BRD. We found that the technical module subfactor (TMSF) decreased as the inspection number increased and it increased as the Inspection effectiveness and the used year increased. In this condition, the TMSF showed high value for the case of the marine/cooling tower drift area as a corrosion driver, poor quality of coating, no insulation, and low insulation condition.

  • To investigate invar alloy as a core material for increased capacity over-head transmission line which have high strength and low thermal expansion coefficient, hardness and thermal expansion coefficient of Fe-Ni-Co alloy have been studied. It is necessary that invar alloy have low thermal expansion coefficient and high strength for increased capacity over-head transmission line. In this paper. we tried to find out the effect of Ni and Co which has ferromagnetic properties and high saturation magnetization. It was found that Ni decrease thermal expansion coefficient and hardness, Co decrease thermal expansion coefficient but increase hardness in Fe-xNi-Co system. In Fe-(29-x)Ni-Co system, the material has no low thermal expansion properties substituting Co instead of Ni in concentration range of $1\sim7$%Co.

  • The aim of this study was to develop a Mo and V free low alloy cast steel materials, enabling the significant cost- and time-savings in manufacturing and maintaining the insert of cold pressing die without impairment of the important properties. For this purpose, the effects of Si content on combinations of important properties such as hardness, hardenability, and weldability, and strength were systematically investigated. In order to evaluate the applicability as the insert of cold pressing die, the mechanical properties were measured after spheroidization annealing, quenching and tempering, and flame hardening heat treatments, respectively. After the Q/T and F.H. treatments, the developed 0.8${\sim}$1.6%Si containing Mo and V free low alloy cast steels showed excellent matrix strengthening effect, hardenability, and weldability, fulfilling the industrial criterion of the mechanical properties for automobile cold pressing die insert.

  • Isotope dilution mass spectrometry (IDMS) was applied to the determination of Ni, Cr, Mo in low alloy steel reference materials. The Mo isotope ratio measurement was performed by dynamic reaction cell inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (DRC-ICP/MS) using ammonia as a reaction cell gas. In the case of Ni and Cr measurement, all data were obtained at medium resolution mode (m/${\Delta}m=3000$) of double focusing sector field high resolution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HR-ICP/MS). For the method validation of the technique was assessed using the certified reference materials such as NIST SRM 361, NIST SRM 362, NIST SRM 363, NIST SRM 364, NIST SRM 36b. This method was applied to the determination of Ni, Cr and Mo in low alloy steel sample (CCQM-P25) provided by NMIJ for international comparison study.
