Protective Role of Corticosterone against Hydrogen Peroxide-Induced Neuronal Cell Death in SH-SY5Y Cells

  • Stress breaks body balance, which can cause diverse physiological disorders and worsen preexisting diseases. However, recent studies have reported that controllable stress and overcoming from stress reinforce resilience to resist against more intense stress afterwards. In this study, we investigated the protective effect of corticosterone (CORT), a representative stress hormone against hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-induced neuronal cell death and its underlying molecular mechanism in SH-SY5Y cells, a human neuroblastoma cell line. The decreased cell viability by H2O2 was effectively restored by the pretreatment with low concentration of CORT (0.03 μM for 72 h) in the cells. H2O2-increased expression of apoptotic markers such as PUMA and Bim was decreased by CORT pretreatment. Furthermore, pretreatment of CORT attenuated H2O2-mediated oxidative damages by upregulation of antioxidant enzymes via activation of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2). These findings suggest that low concentration of CORT with eustressed condition enhances intracellular self-defense against H2O2-mediated oxidative cell death, suggesting a role of low concentration of CORT as one of key molecules for resilience and neuronal cell survival.

석유코크스 활용 블루수소생산을 위한 Water Gas Shift 촉매의 조업조건에 따른 반응특성 (Reaction Characteristics of Water Gas Shift Catalysts in Various Operation Conditions of Blue Hydrogen Production Using Petroleum Cokes)

  • 미활용 저급자원인 석유코크스를 대상으로 고순도의 수소 생산을 위한 수성가스전이반응에 적용가능성을 확인하기 위하여 Cu/ZnO/MgO/Al2O3 (CZMA) 촉매를 공침법을 사용하여 제조하였다. 제조된 촉매는 BET, H2-TPR을 사용하여 분석되었다. 촉매의 반응성 테스트는 고농도의 CO를 포함하는 합성가스로부터 단일 Low Temperature Shift 반응을 거치는 경우와 High Temperature Shift 반응을 거친 후 스팀의 응축 없이 즉시 LTS 반응을 거치는 두 가지의 경우를 비교 및 분석하였다. 두 조건에서 steam/CO 비, 유량 및 유속, 온도에 따른 반응특성을 확인하였다. 전환된 저농도의 CO와 스팀이 응축 없이 LTS로 즉시 주입되는 경우 많은 양의 스팀이 존재함에도 불구하고 대부분의 조건에서 다소 낮은 CO 전환율을 나타냈다. 또한 steam/CO비, 온도 및 유속에 대한 영향이 크게 나타나 최적의 조업조건을 결정하기에 추가적인 분석이 요구되었다. 반면, 고농도의 CO 기체를 포함하는 조건에서는 탄소침적 또는 촉매의 활성 저하가 나타나지 않았으며 대부분의 조건에서 높은 CO 전환율을 나타내었다. 결론적으로 Cu/ZnO/MgO/Al2O3 촉매를 적용하여 고농도의 CO를 포함하는 합성가스 조성에서 적절한 조업조건을 적용시키면 단일 LTS 반응을 적용해도 고농도의 CO를 CO2로 충분히 전환 가능함을 확인하였다.

  • Tungsten silicide films were deposited on the phosphorus-doped poly-Si/SiO$_{2}$/Si-substrates by LPCVD (low pressue chemical vapor deposition). The formation and various properties of tungsten silicide processed by furnace annealing in N$_{2}$ ambient were evaluated by using XRD. AFM, 4-point probe and SEM. And the redistribution of phosphorus atoms has been observed by SIMS. The crystal structure of the as-deposited tungsten silicide films were transformed from the hexagonal to the tetragonal structure upon annealing at 550.deg. C. The surface roughness of tungsten polycide films were found to very smoothly upon annelaing at 850.deg. C and low phosphorus concentration in polysilicon layer. The sheet resistance of tungsten polycide low phosphorus concentration in polysilicon layer. The sheet resistance of tungsten polycide films are measured to be 2.4 .ohm./ㅁafter furnace annealing at 1100.deg. C, 30min. It was found that the sheet resistance of tungsten polycide films upon annealing above 1050.deg. C were independant on the phosphorus concentration of polysilicon layer and furnace annealing times. An out-diffusion of phosphorus impurity through tungsten silicide film after annealing in $O_{2}$ ambient revealed a remarkably low content of dopant by oxide capping.

Airborne Measurements of Ozone and Its Precursors over Yeosu-Gwangyang Industrial Areas in the Southern Coast of Korea

  • The purpose of this study is to understand distributional characteristics in the atmospheric concentrations of $O_3$ and its precursors based on data taken at the southern Korean coast. The average $O_3$ concentration in the high altitude was found to range from 32.3 to 90.8 ppb with a maximum concentration of 132 ppb. The ambient $O_3$ concentration was high at altitudes of 1000 m and 500 m above the southern sea near Gwangyang Bay and an industrial area containing emission sources. The daily mean concentrations of $NO_y$ and CO were 6.7-24.2 ppb and 0.152-0.487 ppm, respectively. During the aerial measurement period, the highest mean concentration of $O_3$ was observed on June 1. The aerial measurement results showed that the maximum ozone concentration was observed to be 132 ppb in the high altitude the southernmost part of Yeosu. The measurement of vertical wind fields in the air indicated that $O_3$ formed in the southernmost part of Yeosu was transported by strong southwesterly winds to the northeast of Gwangyang Bay. This led to a ground $O_3$ concentration of over 100 ppb in Jinju, the northeastern part of Gwangyang Bay. On August 9, when the maximum $O_3$ concentration was 50 ppb, the measurement results showed that $O_3$ concentrations were relatively low compared to other days. In particular, low $NO_2$ and TVOC concentrations were observed, both of which serve to form $O_3$ in photochemical reactions.

청정지역과 도시지역에서 $NO_2$ 광분해율이 오존농도에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구 (A Study on Effect of $NO_2$ Photodissociation rate on Ozone concentration from Rural and Urban Area in the Winter)

  • Due to a rapid in automobiles since the 1980’s, the concentration of NO, and HC has also increased along with cases of VOCs. These air pollutants have created $O_3$ concentration, which cause a harmful effect to the human health. This issue has become a subject of great public interest. For this paper, to compare the concentration of $O_3$, NO, N $O_2$ between the rural and urban area in the winter, the concentrations of each have been measuredevery hour during Jan.~Feb. 2000, 1998, respectively. To calculate the Photochemical Steady State, $\Phi$= $J_{N O_2}$[N $O_2$]/ $k_1$[NO][ $O_3$], temperature and $J_{ N O_2}$ has been determined. The NO concentration in the rural are showed at below 10 ppb while the NO concentration in the urban area showed maximum value of 90~120 ppb. But the $O_3$ concentration in both areas showed less than 30 ppb. The reason is that the N $O_2$ photodissiciation rate is low due to the temperature being below 2$^{\circ}C$ and less than 60 degrees in the solar zenith angle during the winter time, which makes the $O_3$ concentration in both areas, similar in the concentration level. N $O_2$ photodissociation rate in both ares showed maximum value of 3.0mW/$\textrm{cm}^2$. Values of $\Phi$ determined from the rural area was consistently the unity, approaching 1. But values of $\Phi$ determined from the urban was roughly higher than unity, approaching above 1or 2 for clear sky-high sun(10:00~16:00).

LPCVD $P_2O_5-SiO_2$ 집적광학박막의 제작 및 특성 연구(1) -TEOS와 TMPite의 LPCVD- (Fabrication and Characterization of LPCVD $P_2O_5-SiO_2$ Films for Inegrated Optics (1) -LPCVD of TEOS and TMPite)

  • Si 기판 위에 low pressure chemical vapor deposition 방법에 의해 TEOS (tetraethylorthosilicate)와 TMPite (trimethylphosphite)를 재료로하여 집적광학용 $P_2O_5-SiO_2$ 박막을 만들고 그 특성을 조사하였다. TEOS의 반응에 TMPite가 참여함으로서 반응활성화에너지는 54.6 kcal/mole에서 39.2 kcal/mole로 크게 낮아졌으며 박막의 증착속도와 P 농도는 TMPite의 유량에 비례하여 증가하였다. 또한 증착온도가 높을스록 박막의 증착속도는 증가하나 P 농도는 감소하였다. 제작된 박막의 굴절률은 P 농도 1wt% 당 0.0019로 P 농도에 비례하여 증가하였다. 측정된 박막 불균일도는 두께 ${\pm}$7% 및 P 농도 ${\pm}$0.5wt% 정도로서 이러한 불균일성은 주로 TMPite의 불균일한 수송에 기인함을 보였다. 또한 P 농도가 10wt% 이상인 박막을 대기중에 장시간 노출하면 표면에 인산이 석출됨을 확인하였다.

Phosphorus-Doped ZnO 나노로드의 열처리 효과 (Annealing Effect of Phosphorus-Doped ZnO Nanorods Synthesized by Hydrothermal Method)

  • An effect of thermal annealing on activating phosphorus (P) atoms in ZnO nanorods (NR) grown using a hydrothermal process was investigated. $NH_4H_2PO_4$ used as a dopant source reacted with $Zn^{2+}$ ions and $Zn_3(PO_4)_2$ sediment was produced in the solution. The fact that most of the input P elements are concentrated in the $Zn_3(PO_4)_2$ sediment was confirmed using an energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS). After the hydrothermal process, ZnO NRs were synthesized and their PL peaks were exhibited at 405 and 500 nm because P atoms diffused to the ZnO crystal from the $Zn_3(PO_4)_2$ particles. The solubility of the $Zn_3(PO_4)_2$ initially formed sediment varied with the concentration of $NH_4OH$. Before annealing, both the structural and the optical properties of the P-doped ZnO NR were changed by the variation of P doping concentration, which affected the ZnO lattice parameters. At low doping concentration of phosphorus in ZnO crystal, it was determined that a phosphorus atom substituted for a Zn site and interacted with two $V_{Zn}$, resulting in a $P_{Zn}-2V_{Zn}$ complex, which is responsible for p-type conduction. After annealing, a shift of the PL peak was found to have occurred due to the unstable P doping state at high concentration of P, whereas at low concentration there was little shift of PL peak due to the stable P doping state.

소규모 오수처리를 위한 $A_{2}O$ SBR과 $A_{2}O$ SBBR에서 유입 유기물 농도변화에 따른 염양염류 제거 특성 비교 (A Comparison of Nutrients Removal Characteristics by the Variation of Organics in $A_{2}O$ SBR and $A_{2}O$ SBBR for the Small Sewerage System)

  • Laboratory scale experiments were conducted to study the conversion of sludge from conventional activated sludge to nitrogen-phosphorus removal sludge using two types of sequencing batch reactor (SBR) systems, a conventional SBR and sequencing batch biofilm reactor (SBBR). The nitrogen and phosphorus removal characteristics were similar between SBR and SBBR and the removal efficiencies were very low when the influent TOC concentrations were low. The nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiencies in SBR were 96% and 77.5%, respectively, which were higher than those in SBBR (88% and 42.5%) at the high influent TOC concentration. In SBBR, the simultaneous nitrification-denitrification was occurred because of the biofilm process. The variations of pH, DO concentration and ORP were changed as the variation of influent TOC concentration both in SBR and SBBR and their periodical characteristics were cleary shown at the high influent TOC concentration. Especially, the pH, DO concentration and ORP inflections, were cleary occurred in SBR compared with SBBR.

여름철 도심 공원의 O3과 NO2 농도의 일변화: 기온과 풍속의 영향 (Diurnal Variations of O3 and NO2 Concentrations in an Urban Park in Summer: Effects of Air Temperature and Wind Speed)

  • The diurnal variations of $O_3$ and $NO_2$ in an urban park and the effects of air temperature and wind speed on the diurnal variations are investigated. $O_3$ and $NO_2$ concentrations were observed at a site in an urban park of Seoul from 27 July 2015 to 9 August 2015. The $O_3$ and $NO_2$ concentrations observed in the urban park are compared to those observed at the Gangnam air quality monitoring station (AQMS). The $O_3$ concentration is higher in the urban park than at the Gangnam AQMS in the daytime because the amount of $O_3$ dissociated by NO is smaller as well as partly because the amount of $O_3$ produced in the oxidation process of biogenic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is larger in the urban park than at the Gangnam AQMS. The $NO_2$ concentration is lower in the urban park than at the Gangnam AQMS during day and night because the observation site in the urban park is relatively far from roads where $NO_x$ is freshly emitted from vehicles. The difference in $NO_2$ concentration is larger in the daytime than in the nighttime. To examine the effects of air temperature and wind speed on the diurnal variations of $O_3$ and $NO_2$, the observed $O_3$ and $NO_2$ concentrations are classified into high or low air temperature and high or low wind speed days. The high $O_3$ and $NO_2$ concentrations in the daytime appear for the high air temperature and low wind speed days. This is because the daytime photochemical processes are favorable when the air temperature is high and the wind speed is low. The scatter plots of the daytime maximum $O_3$ and minimum $NO_2$ concentrations versus the daytime averages of air temperature and wind speed show that the daytime maximum $O_3$ and minimum $NO_2$ concentrations tend to increase as the air temperature increases or the wind speed decreases. The daytime maximum $O_3$ concentration is more sensitive to the changes in air temperature and wind speed in the urban park than at the Gangnam AQMS.

과산화수소가 함유된 저산도 질산용액에서 DEHPA 추출제에 의한 Np의 추출거동 (Extraction Behaviour of Np with DEHPA from the Low Nitric Acid Solution Containing Hydrogen Peroxide)

  • 본 연구는 Np의 환원제로 $H_2O_2$가 함유된 1M 이하의 저산도 질산용액으로부터 DEHPA(di-(2-ethyhexyl)phosphoric acid) 추출제에 의한 Np의 추출 및 역추출 조건 설정과 추출속도 향상에 주안점을 두어, 회분식으로 실험을 수행하였다. 저산도 질산용액에서 Np의 산화상태는 주로 Np(V)로 존재하고 있음을 확인하였으며, Np의 추출율은 $H_2O_2$ 농도 및 DEHPA의 농도 증가에 따라 증가하고, 질산농도 증가에 따라 급격히 감소하였다. 제3의 산화/환원제가 첨가되지 않는 경우 추출율은 약 70% 정도로 다소 낮지만, DEHPA에 의해 추출이 가능함을 보았다. 또한 추출속도는 $H_2O_2$ 농도의 0.516 승에 비례하며, 질산농도의 0.483 승에 반비례하고 있는 다음과 같은 식을 얻었다. $d[Np(V)]/dt=-1.391{\times}10^{-2}[H_2O_2]^{0.516}[HNO_3]^{-0.483}[Np(V)]$ 그리고 과산화수소의 첨가 유무에 관계없이, 유기상으로 추출된 Np은 옥살산(oxalic acid)에 의해 효과적으로 역추출되었으며, 0.5M 옥살산으로 약 92% 이상을 역추출하였다.
