Performance Evaluation of Differentiated Services to MPEG-4 FGS Video Streaming (MPEC-4 FGS 비디오 스트리밍에 대한 네트워크 차별화 서비스의 성능분석)

  • A finer granular scalable (FGS) version of ISO/IEC MPEG-4 video streaming is investigated in this work with the prioritized stream delivery over loss-rate differentiated networks. Our proposed system is focused on the seamless integration of rate adaptation, prioritized packetization, and simplified differentiation for the MPEG-4 FGS video streaming. The proposed system consists of three key components: 1) rate adaptation with scalable source encoding, 2) content-aware prioritized packetization, and 3) loss-based differential forwarding. More specifically, a constant-quality rate adaptation is first achieved by optimally truncating the over-coded FGS stream based on the embedding rate-distortion (R-D) information (obtained from a piecewise linear R-D model). The rate-controlled video stream is then packetized and prioritized according to the loss impact of each packet. Prioritized packets are transmitted over the underlying network, where packets are subject to differentiated dropping and forwarding. By focusing on the end-to-end quality, we establish an effective working conditions for the proposed video streaming and the superior performance is verified by simulated MPEG-4 FGS video streaming.

Regulation of BDNF release in dopaminergic neurons

  • The major pathological lesion in Parkinson's disease(PD) is selective degeneration and loss of pigmented dopaminergic neurons in substantia nigra (SN). Although the initial cause and subsequent molecular signaling mechanisms leading to the dopaminergic cell death underlying the PD process is elusive, the potent neurotrophic factors (NTFs), brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and glial cell line derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF), are known to exert dopaminergic neuroprotection both in vivo and in vitro models of PD employing the neurotoxin, MPTP. BDNF and its receptor, trkB are expressed in SN dopaminergic neurons and their innervation target. Thus, neurotrophins may have autocrine, paracrine and retrograde transport effects on the SN dopaminergic neurons. This study determined the BDNF secretion from SN dopaminergic neurons by ELISA. Regulation of BDNF synthesis/release and changes in signaling pathways are monitored in the presence of free radical donor, NO donor and mitochondrial inhibitors. Also, this study shows that BDNF is able to promote survival and phenotypic differentiation of SN dopaminergic neurons in culture and protect them against MPTP-induced neurotoxicity via MAP kinase pathway.

Regeneration of the retina: toward stem cell therapy for degenerative retinal diseases

  • Degenerative retinal diseases affect millions of people worldwide, which can lead to the loss of vision. However, therapeutic approaches that can reverse this process are limited. Recent efforts have allowed the possibility of the stem cell-based regeneration of retinal cells and repair of injured retinal tissues. Although the direct differentiation of pluripotent stem cells into terminally differentiated photoreceptor cells comprises one approach, a series of studies revealed the intrinsic regenerative potential of the retina using endogenous retinal stem cells. Muller glial cells, ciliary pigment epithelial cells, and retinal pigment epithelial cells are candidates for such retinal stem cells that can differentiate into multiple types of retinal cells and be integrated into injured or developing retina. In this review, we explore our current understanding of the cellular identity of these candidate retinal stem cells and their therapeutic potential for cell therapy against degenerative retinal diseases. Mind Bomb1 and DeltaD are Localized into Autophagosome after Endocytosis in Zebrafish during Neurogenesis

  • Endocytosis of the Notch ligand, DeltaD, by mind bomb1 is indispensable for activation of Notch in cell fate determination, proliferation, and differentiation during zebrafish neurogenesis. Loss of mind bomb1 activity as an E3 Ubiquitin ligase causes the accumulation of deltaD at the plasma membrane and results in the ectopic neurogenic phenotype by activation of Notch in early zebrafish embryogenesis. However, the regulatory mechanism of deltaD during neurogenesis is not identified yet. This study aims to analyze the pathway of mib1 and deltaD after endocytosis in vivo during zebrafish embryogenesis. Mind bomb1 and deltaD are co-localized into autophagosome and mutant form of mind bomb1 fails to cargo deltaD into autophagosomes. These findings suggest that mind bomb I mediates deltaD regulation by autophagy in an ubiquitin-dependent manner during zebrafish embryogenesis.

Vowel Fundamental Frequency in Manner Differentiation of Korean Stops and Affricates

  • In this study, I investigate the role of post-consonantal fundamental frequency (F0) as a cue for automatic distinction of types of Korean stops and affricates. Rather than examining data obtained by restricting contexts to a minimum to prevent the interference of irrelevant factors, a relatively natural speaker independent speech corpus is analysed. Automatic and statistical approaches are adopted to annotate data, to minimise speaker variability, and to evaluate the results. In spite of possible loss of information during those automatic analyses, statistics obtained suggest that vowel F0 is a useful cue for distinguishing manners of articulation of Korean non-continuant obstruents having the same place of articulation, especially of lax and aspirated stops and affricates. On the basis of the statistics, automatic classification is attempted over the relevant consonants in a specific context where the micro-prosodic effects appear to be maximised. The results confirm the usefulness of this effect in application for Korean phone recognition.

  • 스케줄링은 네트워크상의 공유된 자원을 보다 효과적으로 이용하기 위한 것으로서 delay, delay jitter, packet loss rate, throughput과 같은 서비스 값들의 QoA(Quality of Service)를 보장하기 위한 핵심 요소이다. 유선망에서의 스케줄링은 이미 익숙한 영역으로 많은 발전이 되어왔지만, 무선채널의 불안정성이나 사용자의 움직임으로 인해 발생하는 다양한 링크 에러율과 용량 때문에 무선망에서의 직접적용은 많은 문제를 일으키게 된다. 이 논문에서는 기존에 나와 있는 여러 무선 스케줄링 기법중 채널 보상 모델을 이용하여 서비스 차별화(Service Differentiation)와 공평성(Fairness)에 초점을 맞춘 QoS제공 성능향상 스케줄링 알고리즘을 제안하였다.

Cases Studies on Total Productive Management and Competitive Advantages

  • The purpose of business strategy is to achieve competitive advantages which includes higher efficiency, better quality, more innovation and faster customer response. In other words, The business strategy is to build unique capability of lower cost and/or differentiation. In production aspect, unique capability means better production power with better performance at 3M(Man, Machine, Material) of input and PQCDSM (Product, Quality, Cost, Delivery, Safety, Moral) from output. The Total Productive management (TPM), a series of improvement activities focused on reduction of equipment loss, is a tool to establish business competitive advantages. In this paper, several domestic companies who won the Japan TPM Award have been studied. It is found that there is a strong cause-effect relationship between TPM and competitive advantages because. 1. TPM can change employees mindset effectively. 2. TPM can upgrade employees capabilities. 3. TPM can lead to excellent productivity.

None of The Four Tyrosine Residues is Essential for the Bio-logical Activity of Erythropoietin

  • Erythropoietin (EPO), a glycoprotein hormone, regulates the proliferation and differentiation of ereythroid progenitor cells. Many attempts have been made to identify the functionally important amino acids of the hormone. One of those early studies has found that heavy redioiodination of EPO caused the loss of its biological activity, suggesting some important role of one of the four tyrosine residues (Goldwasser, 1981). Thus, in this study, we have generated and tested four $Tyr{\dashrightarrow}Phe$ substitution mutants to clarify the possible role of the tyrosine residue(s) in the hormone's Tyrosine residue(s) in the hormone's biological activity. When the mutant and wild type EPO cDBAs were transfected into COS-7 cells and the biological activities of the muteins were assayed using the primary murine erythroid spleen cells, no mutation tested was found to affect the biological activity of the hormone. Thus we conclude that, contrary to the previous observation, none of the four tyrosine in eryghropoietin is critically involved in the binding of the hormone to its receptor.

  • The Tolosa-Hunt syndrome is a symptom complex with unilateral painful ophthalmoplegia associated with retro-orbital pain, proptosis and Ⅲ, Ⅳ, Ⅴ-1, Ⅵ cranial nerves palsy due to nonspecific granulomatous inflammation in the superior orbital fissure or cavernous sinus. We experienced a 50 years old female patient with Tolosa-Hunt syndrome who had several clinical signs and symptoms such as ocular pain, headache, sensory loss of face, diplopia, and visual disturbance. In the point of Differentiation of Syndrome(辨證). this subject was diagnosed as Deficiency of yin in liver and kidney(肝腎陰虛), and was administrated with Yangyeummyungmoktang-Gamibang. After treatment of acupuncture and herbal medicine above symptoms were improved.

  • The loss of skeletal muscle, called sarcopenia, is an inevitable event during the aging process, and significantly impacts quality of life. Autophagy is known to reduce muscle atrophy caused by dysfunctional organelles, even though the molecular mechanism remains unclear. Here, we have discuss the current understanding of exercise-induced autophagy activation in skeletal muscle regeneration and remodeling, leading to sarcopenia intervention. With aging, dysregulation of autophagy flux inhibits lysosomal storage processes involved in muscle biogenesis. AMPK-ULK1 and the $FoxO/PGC-1{\alpha}$ signaling pathways play a critical role in the induction of autophagy machinery in skeletal muscle, thus these pathways could be targets for therapeutics development. Autophagy has been also shown to be a critical regulator of stem cell fate, which determines satellite cell differentiation into muscle fiber, thereby increasing muscle mass. This review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the physiological role of autophagy in skeletal muscle aging and sarcopenia.
