Design of a High Efficiency Resonator for Wireless Power Transfer (무선 전력 전송용 고효율 공진기 설계)

  • In this paper, an efficiency improvement method in the wireless power transfer system based on magnetic resonance is proposed. A combined helical-spiral structure is adopted for self-resonant coil and source and device coils are designed using circular loop structure. The proposed resonator utilizing combined helical-spiral structure yields 13 % efficiency improvement over that of an existing helical type resonator when the transmitting and receiving coils are separated by 120 mm. In addition, the size can be reduced by 33 % comparing to the previous resonator.

  • A new type of gripper for micrometer-size objects is developed using piezoelectric multi-layer benders. It is composed of three chopsticks, two of which are designed to grip micro-objects. The third one is reserved for helping the two when objects are released from the chopsticks. It is well known that a micro object is much easier to grasp than to release it after holding it. The electrostatic force between the chopsticks and an object is believed to be the main cause of adhesion in a dry environment. The surface tension becomes very important when liquids are present or in a liquid. The third auxiliary chopsticks is introduced to solve there surface effects. All the three chopsticks are made of tungsten wires with sharpened ends by etching. When grasping microparts, the two chopsticks are utilized, and, when releasing them anywhere the parts are located, the third one reduces the electrostatic force between the objects and the chopstick may be to help the other two chopsticks to hold an objects in a desired orientation. We constructed the three chopstick gripoer for micro objects and test their function by holding and releasing an object of a diameter of 100 micrometers. We make use of open loop voltage control. The bender displacement resolution is sub-micrometer. The gripping forces, about tens of mN are obtained. The experiment shows that the third auxiliary chopstick functions effectively.

  • A control system for ultrasonic spray pyrolysis deposition was developed that can coat a large size glass panel with a transparent conductive oxide. It consists of several ultrasonic atomizer devices to cover a large area and a host computer for individually controlling the devices. The sub-controller in an ultrasonic atomizer device can adjust the flow rate of the atomized conductive oxide gas by setting the flow rate of the solution and regulating the level of the solution in the tank. To construct a feedback control loop for level regulation, a level sensor that utilized an infrared distance sensor and an electric circuit for adjusting the ultrasonic oscillator were developed. The host program was also developed, which can monitor and control the sub-controllers. A proportional-integral controller was developed for a simplified model, and its operation was verified through an experiment.

Design of a Two-wheeled Balancing Mobile Platform with Tilting Motion (횡방향 틸팅 기능을 갖는 이륜 밸런싱 모바일 플랫폼 설계)

  • Conventional two-wheeled balancing robots are limited in terms of turning speed because they lack the lateral motion to compensate for the centrifugal force needed to stop rollover. In order to improve lateral stability, this paper suggests a two-wheeled balancing mobile platform equipped with a tilting mechanism to generate roll motions. In terms of static force analysis, it is shown that the two-body sliding type tilting method is more suitable for small-size mobile robots than the single-body type. For the mathematical modeling, the tilting-balancing platform is assumed as a 3D inverted pendulum and the four-degrees-of-freedom equation of motion is derived. In the velocity/posture control loop, the desired tilting angle is naturally determined according to the changes of forward velocity and steering yaw rate. The efficiency of the developed tilting type balancing mobile platform is validated through experimental results.

Development of Digital Carriage for Continuous/Intermittent Welding (디지털식 연속/단속 용접용 캐리지 개발)

  • This paper shows the results of the development of a small size of digital type continuous and intermittent welding auto-carriage based on microprocessor (Intel 80196KC) for welding process with long welding line. The developed welding auto-carriage loads welding torch and tracks welding line. It is an automaton largely used for welding process with a lot of long welding lines such as shipbuilding and structure. Most traditional auto-carriages have been developed based on analog circuit for open loop control. So this analog circuit welding auto-carriage cannon control welding speed. Specially welding auto-carriage for intermittent welding condition is so complicated and has the low precision of control performance in welding distance and non-welding distance. The auto-carriage developed in this paper has the following characteristics: It has not only functions of traditional carriage but also functions such as pseudo-welding process of big iron structures, intermittent welding in order to limit heat for welding thin plates, crater treatment of the final step of welding, acceleration at the initial step of welding and deceleration in the final step of welding. The main control board of auto-carriage, power supply system and DC motor drive wee developed and manufactured. The welding speed and the welding distance of the developed auto-carriage are controlled accurately by feedback control using photo-sensor. Hardware and software robust against the heat and noise produced on the welding process are developed.

  • It is well known that the conventional differential source-coupled pair uses gates as its input terminals. This input pair provids a high open-loop gain, a large CMRR, and a good PSRR. For these reasons, the input pair has been used widely as an input stages of the differential amplifiers, but a narrow linear input range of this structurelimits its application in the area of some analog circuit design. A novel CMOS source-coupled backgate pair is proposed in this paper. The bulk of MOSFET is exploited and input devices are biased to operate in ohmic region. With this topology, the backgate pair of the wide linear input range and variable transconductance can be obtained. This backgate input differential stage is realized with the size of W/L=50/25 MOSFETs. The results show the nonlinear error is less than $\gamma$1% over 10V full-scale range for the bias current of 200$\mu$A with 10V single power-supply.

Characterization of the Small Cryptic Plasmid, pGD2, of Klebsiellia sp. KCL-2.

  • One of the cryptic plasmids from the oil degrading bacterium Klebsiella sp. KCL-2, the small plasmid pGD2, has been identified and characterized. This plasmid has a size of 3.6 kb with unknown functions. We constructed the recombinant plasmid pMGD2. The nucleotide sequences of the plasmid were determined and two open reading frames were detected. ORF1 encodes a replication initiator protein (RepA), which has a high degree of homology with the protein of ColE2 plasmid. The product encoded by ORF2 showed a high similarity with the transposase protein of IS5. IS5 is 1195 by long and contains an inverted terminal repetition of 16 bp with one mismatch. Stem-loop structures in the 5'untranslated region of the repA suggest that a putative gene, incA, is located in a complementary strand to the leader region of the repA mRNA.

Relationship between Endurance Performance and Genetic Polymorphisms of Mitochondrial DNA in Korean Male Elite Athletes

  • It has been reported that endurance performance is influenced by various environmental and genetic factors. In view of an important role of human mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) as a candidate for endurance performance, this study focused on the relationships between $VO_{2max}$ value as a measure of endurance performance or other associated phenotypes and four mtDNA restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) (Bam HI, Hinc II1, Hinc II2 and Nci I) in the NADH dehydrogenase subunit 5 and one (Kpn I) in the D-loop region of mtDNA. MtDNA was purified from buffy coat in human peripheral blood, and PCR-RFLP analysis was performed to estimate the allele frequencies of each polymorphism in the mtDNA. There were no significant differences in allele distributions of all polymorphisms studied between male athletes and controls, respectively (P>0.05). However, the Kpn I polymorphism was significantly associated with diastolic blood pressure level in male athletes, respectively (P<0.05). Therefore, our results suggest that this polymorphism might be one of the factors modifying inter-individual difference in cardiovascular risk. Further studies using larger sample size will be required to generalize these results from the study described herein.

Active Control of Flow Noise Sources in Turbulent Boundary Layer on a Flat-Plate Using Piezoelectric Bimorph Film

  • The piezoelectric bimorph film, which, as an actuator, can generate more effective displacement than the usual PVDF film, is used to control the turbulent boundary-layer flow. The change of wall pressures inside the turbulent boundary layer is observed by using the multi-channel microphone array flush-mounted on the surface when actuation at the non-dimensional frequency $f_b^+$:=0.008 and 0.028 is applied to the turbulent boundary layer. The wall pressure characteristics by the actuation to produce local displacement are more dominantly influenced by the size of the actuator module than the actuation frequency. The movement of large-scale turbulent structures to the upper layer is found to be the main mechanism of the reduction in the wall- pressure energy spectrum when the 700$700{\nu}/u_{\tau}$-long bimorph film is periodically actuated at the non- dimensional frequency $f_b^+$:=0.008 and 0.028. The biomorph actuator is triggered with the time delay for the active forcing at a single frequency when a 1/8' pressure-type, pin-holed microphone sensor detects the large-amplitude pressure event by the turbulent spot. The wall-pressure energy in the late-transitional boundary layer is partially reduced near the convection wavenumber by the open-loop control based on the large amplitude event.

  • High resolution satellite images are now widely used for a variety of mapping applications including photogrammetry, GIS data acquisition and visualization. As the spectral and spatial data size of satellite images increases, a greater processing power is needed to process the images. The solution of these problems is parallel systems. Parallel processing techniques have been developed for improving the performance of image processing along with the development of the computational power. However, conventional CPU-based parallel computing is often not good enough for the demand for computational speed to process the images. The GPU is a good candidate to achieve this goal. Recently GPUs are used in the field of highly complex processing including many loop operations such as mathematical transforms, ray tracing. In this study we proposed a technique for parallel processing of high resolution satellite images using GPU. We implemented a spectral radiometric processing algorithm on Landsat-7 ETM+ imagery using CUDA, a parallel computing architecture developed by NVIDIA for GPU. Also performance of the algorithm on GPU and CPU is compared.
