  • This study investigates the effects of long-term artificial-aging on hardness variation in the dissimilar metal weldments for nuclear power plant facilities. These dissimilar welds are inevitably required to join the components in nozzle parts of pressurized vessels, such as austenitic stainless steels and ferritic steels. A artificial thermal aging was conducted in an electrical furnace to simulate material degradation at high temperatures. The test materials were held at the temperature of $600^{\circ}C$ for 10000 hours and interrupted at various levels of degraded specimens. The degradation of hardness is a well-known phenomenon resulting from long-term aging or high-temperature degradation of structural materials. In this study, the variation of hardness at each position was different, and complicated in relation to microstructures such as twins, grains, precipitates, phase transformations, and residual stresses in dissimilar weldments. We discussed the variation of hardness in terms of microstructural changes during long-term aging.

  • This study is to draw thermal property data during long-term aging, by testing the thermal conductivity of building insulation materials in Korea. The thermal resistance of extruded insulation within 3 days from manufacture performed well over the KS Standard. After 50 to 110 days, however, the thermal performance had deteriorated to the level of the KS standard. Eventually, after 4,000 days, the insulation performance had deteriorated to about 25.4~41.8% of the initial performance. Therefore, this research will be utilized as a reference for thermal properties during long-term aging, in order to improve standards and regulations related to building insulation materials.

  • The application of the high-performance insulation materials for buildings seems to be an essential measure for reducing energy use in buildings. Phenolic foam is a readily available insulation material with thermal conductivity of about 0.018 to 0.020 W/(mK). It has the advantage of higher thermal resistance and better fire resistance compared to other conventional building insulation materials. Insulation material used for building envelope is regarded as one of the decisive factors for building's energy load. Furthermore, the degradation of its thermal performance over time increasingly affects the building's energy use demand. Generally, the life span of conventionally built buildings is expected to be more than 50 years, so the long-term performance of insulation materials is critical. This paper aims to evaluate the long-term performance of phenolic form boards through an accelerated aging test. The tests were conducted according to BS EN 13166 and KS M ISO 11561. Based on the results of the accelerated aging test, the thermal performance variation of the material was analyzed, and then its aged value after 25 years was computed. Also, the characteristics of the phenolic foam board's long-term performance were also examined based on the standard testing methods adopted.

  • The vegetable-based insulating oils are substitutes for mineral oils in oil-filled transformer. The important properties of vegetable insulating oil is their higher flash/fire point and biodegradability than conventional mineral oils. The large oil-filled transformer eliminate the risk of explosion and fire should the transformer fail and oil ignite owing to high flash/fire point of vegetable insulating oil. In addition, higher biodegradability of vegetable insulating oils can let the oil spill damage reduced. In this experiment, the real oil-filled transformers using mineral oil and vegetable oil have accelerated aging. After working on the 100% accelerated aging experiment were conducted comparing the transformer. The hottest-spot temperature using thermal coefficients were calculated to determin the degree of accelerated aging. As a result, apply mineral oil transformer in accordance with the accelerated aging life come to an end. In contrast, vegetable insulating oils showed the opposite characteristics. Vegetable insulating oil compared to the mineral oil are found to be an long life. As a result, the vegetable oil has a long-term stability.

  • The effect of long-term aging degradation on magnetic properties of ferritic 11Cr low-carbon steel was investigated. Coercivity and hysteresis loss measured from the hysteresis loops decreased with long-term aging time and showed that the relation was well fitted by a second order exponential function. Vickers hardness also decreased with aging time and resulted in mechanical softening. In addition, the microstructural evolution was observed by the scanning electron microscopy, backscattered electron image and X-ray diffraction. The $Cr_{23}C_6$ precipitates along grain boundary grew fast and Laves ($Fe_2W$) phase on martensitic lath boundaries in interior grains was developed. The solid solution atoms depleted in matrix and lath subgrains recovered owing to precipitate coarsening with long-term aging degradation. There was a close relation with softening of magnetic and mechanical properties.

  • The long-term aging of ferritic 2.25CrMo steel was characterized using the acoustic nonlinear effect in order to apply to diagnose the degradation behavior of structural materials. We measured the acoustic nonlinearity parameter for each thermally aged specimen by the higher harmonic-generation technique. The acoustic nonlinearity parameter increased with aging time due to equilibrium M6C carbide precipitation, and has a favorable linear relation with Rockwell hardness. This study suggests that acoustic nonlinearity testing may be applicable to diagnostics on strength degradation in rotor steels.

  • This study was carried out for evaluating correlation of aging level and deformation resistance of asphalt mixtures conditioned by artificial aging treatment. The specimens were made of the short-term aged loose asphalt mixture which was kept in a convection oven at $154^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours, and then were artificially aged at $110^{\circ}C$ for 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours for long-term aging. Deformation strength ($S_D$) and large molecular size ratio (LMS(%)) were measured after short-term and each long-term aging treatment to evaluate aging extents of each mixture with aging time using GPC(Gel-permeation chromatograph) test. It is shown that the $S_D$ and LMS(%) were increased with aging time increment, and that LMS(%) quantity and $S_D$ have relatively good correlation each other. This study found that the aged asphalt mixture had better resistance against rutting and it was possible to estimate rutting characteristics of asphalt mixtures by using LMS(%) without a binder recovery.

  • This study was carried out for developing artificial short-term aging(SA) and long-term aging(LA) methods of asphalt mixtures in which the aging level is properly matched with those of RTFO and PAV aged binders, respectively. The specimens were made of the short-term aged loose asphalt mixture which was kept in a convection oven at $154^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours and were aged at $110^{\circ}C$ for 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours for SA. Large molecular size(LMS) were measured using GPC after SA and LA to evaluate aging extents of each mixture with aging time. It is shown that the LMS was increased with aging time increment and that from the LMS(%) change ratio, it was possible to suggest an appropriate artificial aging time which is corresponding level of aging with RTFO and PAV. It was found that SA was somewhat strong and LA for 48 hours at $110^{\circ}C$ would be appropriate if sort-term aging is properly controlled.
