Data-driven structural health monitoring (SHM) of civil infrastructure can be used to continuously assess the state of a structure, allowing preemptive safety measures to be carried out. Long-term monitoring of large-scale civil infrastructure often involves data-collection using a network of numerous sensors of various types. Malfunctioning sensors in the network are common, which can disrupt the condition assessment and even lead to false-negative indications of damage. The overwhelming size of the data collected renders manual approaches to ensure data quality intractable. The task of detecting and classifying an anomaly in the raw data is non-trivial. We propose an approach to automate this task, improving upon the previously developed technique of image-based pre-processing on one-dimensional (1D) data by enriching the features of the neural network input data with multiple channels. In particular, feature engineering is employed to convert the measured time histories into a 3-channel image comprised of (i) the time history, (ii) the spectrogram, and (iii) the probability density function representation of the signal. To demonstrate this approach, a CNN model is designed and trained on a dataset consisting of acceleration records of sensors installed on a long-span bridge, with the goal of fault detection and classification. The effect of imbalance in anomaly patterns observed is studied to better account for unseen test cases. The proposed framework achieves high overall accuracy and recall even when tested on an unseen dataset that is much larger than the samples used for training, offering a viable solution for implementation on full-scale structures where limited labeled-training data is available.

This study investigates the structural safety of typical greenhouse to be utilized for developing plant factory. New long-span greenhouse systems were presented according to the results of structural analyses performed by finite-element program, ABAQUS. Reasonable values of design loads such as wind and snow loads in the Greenhouse Design Specifications (1995) were applied to check the new greenhouse systems. It was concluded that the new greenhouse systems were consistently safe enough to resist to both wind load and snow load. The new greenhouse system can be used to make simple and economic plant factory.

This paper presented the nonlinear behaviors of the single-layered lattice dome, which is widely used for the long-span structure system. The behaviors were analysed through the classical shell buckling theory as the single-layered lattice dome behaves like continum thin shell due to its geometric characteristics, and finite element analysis method using the software program Nastran. Shell buckling theory provides two types of buckling loads, the global- and member buckling, and finite element analysis provides the ultimate load of geometric nonlinear analysis as well as the buckling load of Eigen value solution. Two types of models for the lattice dome were analysed, that is rigid- and pin-jointed structure. Buckling load using the shell buckling theory for each type of lattice dome, governed by the minimum value of global buckling or member buckling load, resulted better estimation than the buckling load with Eigen value analysis. And it is useful to predict the buckling pattern, that is global buckling or member buckling.

A parking structure has been on the spotlight to solve the parking problem in downtown area. However, the overall height of parking structure is stipulated less than 8m. Therefore, in this research, the flexural and shear capacity of 'wide composite beam' which can reduce story height and have long span, is evaluated. Based on test result, the rebar in truss did not affect its flexural strength. However, in the case of the specimen without the rebar, the mechanical bond strength decreased due to slip occurrence at 70% of the flexural yield strength. Based on the test of shear-bond behavior, all specimen without shear connector should be reinforced with 2 or more flat bar, because it did not have enough shear bond strength resisted by the mechanical bond mechanism.
The suspended dome system is a new structural form that has become popular in the construction of long-span roof structures. Suspended dome is a kind of new pre-stressed space grid structure that has complex mechanical characteristics. In this paper, an optimum topology design algorithm is performed using the enhanced colliding bodies optimization (ECBO) method. The length of the strut, the cable initial strain, the cross-sectional area of the cables and the cross-sectional size of steel elements are adopted as design variables and the minimum volume of each dome is taken as the objective function. The topology optimization on lamella dome is performed by considering the type of the joint connections to determine the optimum number of rings, the optimum number of joints in each ring, the optimum height of crown and tubular sections of these domes. A simple procedure is provided to determine the configuration of the dome. This procedure includes calculating the joint coordinates and steel elements and cables constructions. The design constraints are implemented according to the provision of LRFD-AISC (Load and Resistance Factor Design-American Institute of Steel Constitution). This paper explores the efficiency of lamella dome with pin-joint and rigid-joint connections and compares them to investigate the performance of these domes under wind (according to the ASCE 7-05), dead and snow loading conditions. Then, a suspended dome with pin-joint single-layer reticulated shell and a suspended dome with rigid-joint single-layer reticulated shell are discussed. Optimization is performed via ECBO algorithm to demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the ECBO in creating optimal design for suspended domes.
Due to the high compressive and tensile strength of ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC), UHPC used in steel concrete composite structures provided thinner concrete layer compared to ordinary concrete. This leaded to the headed stud shear connectors embedded in UHPC had a low aspect ratio. In order to systematic investigate the effect of headed stud with low aspect ratio on the structural behaviors of steel UHPC composite structure s this paper firstly carried out a test program consisted of twelve push out specimens. The effects of stud height, aspect ratio and reinforcement bars in UHPC on the structural behaviors of headed studs were investigated. The push out test results shows that the increasing of stud height did not obviously influence the structural behaviors of headed studs and the aspect ratio of 2.16 was proved enough to take full advantage of the headed stud strength. Based on the test results, the equation considering the contribution of weld collar was modified to predict the shear strength of headed stud embedded in UHPC. The modified equation could accurately predict the shear strength of headed stud by comparing with the experimental results. On the basis of push out test results, bending tests consisted of three steel UHPC composite slabs were conducted to investigate the effect of shear connection degree on the structural behaviors of composite slabs. The bending test results revealed that the shear connection degree had a significantly influence on the failure modes and ultimate resistance of composite slabs and composite slab with connection degree of 96% in s hear span exhibited a ductile failure accompanied by the tensile yield of steel plate and crushing of UHPC. Finally, analytical model based on the failure mode of composite slabs was proposed to predict the ultimate resistance of steel UHPC composite slabs with different shear connection degrees at the interface.

Continuous welded rail on bridge structure experiences typically a large amount of additional longitudinal axial forces due to longitudinal track-bridge interaction under temperature and traction/braking load effect. In order to reduce the additional axial forces, special type of fastener, such as ZLR and RLR or rail expansion joint should be applied. Sliding slab track system is known to reduce the effect of track-bridge interaction by the application of a sliding layer between slab track and bridge structure. This study presents track-bridge interaction analysis results of the sliding slab track and compares them with conventional fixed slab track on bridges. The result shows that the sliding slab track can significantly reduce the additional axil forces of the continuously welded rail, and the difference is more significant for long and continuous span bridge.

The possibility to development of floor vibration problem is larger in case of long span structure under service loads. Therefore, to improve the vibration performance of the floor, increasing of its thickness is a common method. But, increasing of thickness can lead to increase of slab self weight and reduce the effectiveness of the building. For this reason, attention for voided slab which reduces the self-weight is increasing. Hence, voided deck slab combined with deck plate and polystyrene void foam which has buoyancy prevention capacity and much developed construct ability has bee developed. By using the developed voided slab, vibration performance of a mock-up building structure has been investigated in the current study. The results according to analysis showed that they can be implemented in living and bedroom which are considered as 1st grade on the basis of "Residential Evaluation Guidelines for Vibration of Buildings" by the Architectural Institute of Japan.

Globally road transport networks are subjected to continuous levels of stress from increasing loading and environmental effects. As the most popular mean of transport in the UK the condition of this civil infrastructure is a key indicator of economic growth and productivity. Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) systems can provide a valuable insight to the true condition of our aging infrastructure. In particular, monitoring of the displacement of a bridge structure under live loading can provide an accurate descriptor of bridge condition. In the past B-WIM systems have been used to collect traffic data and hence provide an indicator of bridge condition, however the use of such systems can be restricted by bridge type, assess issues and cost limitations. This research provides a non-contact low cost AI based solution for vehicle classification and associated bridge displacement using computer vision methods. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been adapted to develop the QUBYOLO vehicle classification method from recorded traffic images. This vehicle classification was then accurately related to the corresponding bridge response obtained under live loading using non-contact methods. The successful identification of multiple vehicle types during field testing has shown that QUBYOLO is suitable for the fine-grained vehicle classification required to identify applied load to a bridge structure. The process of displacement analysis and vehicle classification for the purposes of load identification which was used in this research adds to the body of knowledge on the monitoring of existing bridge structures, particularly long span bridges, and establishes the significant potential of computer vision and Deep Learning to provide dependable results on the real response of our infrastructure to existing and potential increased loading.
This article investigates the response of Integral Abutment Bridges (IAB) when subjected to a sequence of seasonal thermal loading of the deck followed by ground seismic shaking in the longitudinal direction. Particular emphasis is placed on the effect of pre-seismic thermal Soil-Structure Interaction (SSI) on the seismic performance of the IAB, as well as on the ability of various backfills configurations, to minimize the unfavorable SSI effects. A series of two-dimensional numerical analyses were performed for this purpose, on a complete backfill-integral bridge-foundation soil system, subjected to seasonal cyclic thermal loading of the deck, followed by ground seismic shaking, employing ABAQUS. Various backfill configurations were investigated, including conventional dense cohesionless backfills, mechanically stabilized backfills and backfills isolated by means of compressive inclusions. The responses of the investigated configurations, in terms of backfill deformations and earth pressures, and bridge resultants and displacements, were compared with each other, as well as with relevant predictions from analyses, where the pre-seismic thermal SSI effects were neglected. The effects of pre-seismic thermal SSI on the seismic response of the coupled IAB-soil system were more evident in cases of conventional backfills, while they were almost negligible in case of IAB with mechanically stabilized backfills and isolated abutments. Along these lines, reasonable assumptions should be made in the seismic analysis of IAB with conventional sand backfills, to account for pre-seismic thermal SSI effects. On the contrary, the analysis of the SSI effects, caused by thermal and seismic loading, can be disaggregated in cases of IAB with isolated backfills.
