  • The purpose of this study was to predict the water quality using the RNN (recurrent neutral network) and LSTM (long short-term memory). These are advanced forms of machine learning algorithms that are better suited for time series learning compared to artificial neural networks; however, they have not been investigated before for water quality prediction. Three water quality indexes, the BOD (biochemical oxygen demand), COD (chemical oxygen demand), and SS (suspended solids) are predicted by the RNN and LSTM. TensorFlow, an open source library developed by Google, was used to implement the machine learning algorithm. The Okcheon observation point in the Geum River basin in the Republic of Korea was selected as the target point for the prediction of the water quality. Ten years of daily observed meteorological (daily temperature and daily wind speed) and hydrological (water level and flow discharge) data were used as the inputs, and irregularly observed water quality (BOD, COD, and SS) data were used as the learning materials. The irregularly observed water quality data were converted into daily data with the linear interpolation method. The water quality after one day was predicted by the machine learning algorithm, and it was found that a water quality prediction is possible with high accuracy compared to existing physical modeling results in the prediction of the BOD, COD, and SS, which are very non-linear. The sequence length and iteration were changed to compare the performances of the algorithms.

  • Recently, demand forecasting techniques have been actively studied due to interest in stable power supply with surging power demand, and increase in spread of smart meters that enable real-time power measurement. In this study, we proceeded the deep learning prediction model experiments which learns actual measured power usage data of home and outputs the forecasting result. And we proceeded pre-processing with moving average method. The predicted value made by the model is evaluated with the actual measured data. Through this forecasting, it is possible to lower the power supply reserve ratio and reduce the waste of the unused power. In this paper, we conducted experiments on three types of networks: Multi Layer Perceptron (MLP), Recurrent Neural Network (RNN), and Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) and we evaluate the results of each scheme. Evaluation is conducted with following method: MSE(Mean Squared Error) method and MAE(Mean Absolute Error).

  • In this paper, in order to prevent the fall of the drone, a study was conducted to collect vibration data from the motor connected to the propeller of the drone, and to predict the abnormal vibration of the drone using recurrent neural network (RNN) and long short term memory (LSTM). In order to collect the vibration data of the drone, a vibration sensor is attached to the motor connected to the propeller of the drone to collect vibration data on normal, bar damage, rotor damage, and shaft deflection, and abnormal vibration data are collected through LSTM and RNN. The root mean square error (RMSE) value of the vibration prediction result were compared and analyzed. As a result of the comparative simulation, it was confirmed that both the predicted result through RNN and LSTM predicted the abnormal vibration pattern very accurately. However, the vibration predicted by the LSTM was found to be 15.4% lower on average than the vibration predicted by the RNN.

  • The study has been carried out with an objective to prepare Siberian roe deer habitat potential maps in South Korea based on three geographic information system-based models including frequency ratio (FR) as a bivariate statistical approach as well as convolutional neural network (CNN) and long short-term memory (LSTM) as machine learning algorithms. According to field observations, 741 locations were reported as roe deer's habitat preferences. The dataset were divided with a proportion of 70:30 for constructing models and validation purposes. Through FR model, a total of 10 influential factors were opted for the modelling process, namely altitude, valley depth, slope height, topographic position index (TPI), topographic wetness index (TWI), normalized difference water index, drainage density, road density, radar intensity, and morphological feature. The results of variable importance analysis determined that TPI, TWI, altitude and valley depth have higher impact on predicting. Furthermore, the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was applied to assess the prediction accuracies of three models. The results showed that all the models almost have similar performances, but LSTM model had relatively higher prediction ability in comparison to FR and CNN models with the accuracy of 76% and 73% during the training and validation process. The obtained map of LSTM model was categorized into five classes of potentiality including very low, low, moderate, high and very high with proportions of 19.70%, 19.81%, 19.31%, 19.86%, and 21.31%, respectively. The resultant potential maps may be valuable to monitor and preserve the Siberian roe deer habitats.

  • Recently, interesting of home training is getting bigger due to COVID-19. Accordingly, research on applying HAR(human activity recognition) technology to home training has been conducted. However, existing paper of HAR proposed static activity instead of dynamic activity. In this paper, the deep learning model where dynamic exercise posture can be analyzed and the accuracy of the user's exercise posture can be shown is proposed. Fitness images of AI-hub are analyzed by blaze pose. The experiment is compared with three types of deep learning model: RNN(recurrent neural network), LSTM(long short-term memory), CNN(convolution neural network). In simulation results, it was shown that the f1-score of RNN, LSTM and CNN is 0.49, 0.87 and 0.98, respectively. It was confirmed that CNN is more suitable for human activity recognition than other models from simulation results. More exercise postures can be analyzed using a variety learning data.

  • For hand expression recognition, hand pose recognition based on the static shape of the hand and hand gesture recognition based on hand movement are used together. In this paper, we proposed a hand expression recognition method that recognizes symbols based on the trajectory of a hand movement on a virtual blackboard. In order to recognize a sign drawn by hand on a virtual blackboard, not only a method of recognizing a sign from a hand movement, but also hand pose recognition for finding the start and end of data input is also required. In this paper, MediaPipe was used to recognize hand pose, and LSTM(Long Short Term Memory), a type of recurrent neural network, was used to recognize hand gesture from time series data. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, it was applied to the recognition of numbers written on a virtual blackboard, and a recognition rate of about 94% was obtained.

  • Deep learning models, especially those based on long short-term memory (LSTM), have presented their superiority in addressing time series data issues recently. This study aims to comprehensively evaluate the performance of deep learning models that belong to the supervised learning category in streamflow prediction. Therefore, six deep learning models-standard LSTM, standard gated recurrent unit (GRU), stacked LSTM, bidirectional LSTM (BiLSTM), feed-forward neural network (FFNN), and convolutional neural network (CNN) models-were of interest in this study. The Red River system, one of the largest river basins in Vietnam, was adopted as a case study. In addition, deep learning models were designed to forecast flowrate for one- and two-day ahead at Son Tay hydrological station on the Red River using a series of observed flowrate data at seven hydrological stations on three major river branches of the Red River system-Thao River, Da River, and Lo River-as the input data for training, validation, and testing. The comparison results have indicated that the four LSTM-based models exhibit significantly better performance and maintain stability than the FFNN and CNN models. Moreover, LSTM-based models may reach impressive predictions even in the presence of upstream reservoirs and dams. In the case of the stacked LSTM and BiLSTM models, the complexity of these models is not accompanied by performance improvement because their respective performance is not higher than the two standard models (LSTM and GRU). As a result, we realized that in the context of hydrological forecasting problems, simple architectural models such as LSTM and GRU (with one hidden layer) are sufficient to produce highly reliable forecasts while minimizing computation time because of the sequential data nature.

  • In this paper, we analyze the infrared feature for the small coast targets according to the surrounding environment for autonomous flight device equipped with an infrared imaging sensor and we propose Cross Duality of Neural Network (CR-DuNN) method which can classify the target and clutter in coastal environment. In coastal environment, there are various property according to diverse change of air temperature, sea temperature, deferent seasons. And small coast target have various infrared feature according to diverse change of environment. In this various environment, it is very important thing that we analyze and classify targets from the clutters to improve target detection accuracy. Thus, we propose infrared feature learning algorithm through LSTM neural network and also propose CR-DuNN algorithm that integrate LSTM prediction network with Du-CNN classification network to classify targets from the clutters.

  • We propose recurrent neural network (RNN) methods for forecasting realized volatility (RV). The data are RVs of ten major stock price indices, four from the US, and six from the EU. Forecasts are made for relative ratio of adjacent RVs instead of the RV itself in order to avoid the out-of-scale issue. Forecasts of RV ratios distribution are first constructed from which those of RVs are computed which are shown to be better than forecasts constructed directly from RV. The apparent asymmetry of RV ratio is addressed by the Piecewise Min-max (PM) normalization. The serial dependence of the ratio data renders us to consider two architectures, long short-term memory (LSTM) and gated recurrent unit (GRU). The hyperparameters of LSTM and GRU are tuned by the nested cross validation. The RNN forecast with the PM normalization and ratio transformation is shown to outperform other forecasts by other RNN models and by benchmarking models of the AR model, the support vector machine (SVM), the deep neural network (DNN), and the convolutional neural network (CNN).
