Effects of adjunctive daily phototherapy on chronic periodontitis: a randomized single-blind controlled trial

  • Purpose: The purpose of this randomized single-blind controlled trial was to elucidate the clinical and antimicrobial effects of daily phototherapy (PT) as an adjunct to scaling and root planing (SRP) in patients with chronic periodontitis. Methods: The study was conducted from December 2013 to May 2014 at Ewha Womans University Mokdong Hospital, Seoul, Korea. Forty-one patients with mild to moderate chronic periodontitis were randomly divided into two therapeutic groups in a 1:1 ratio: SRP+PT and SRP (control) groups. All participants underwent full-mouth SRP. PT was performed thrice a day for a month by using electric toothbrushes with embedded light-emitting diodes. Plaque index, gingival index, probing pocket depth (PPD), clinical attachment level (CAL), and bleeding on probing were assessed before (baseline) and four weeks after (follow-up) the treatment. Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythia, Treponema denticola, Prevotella intermedia, Fusobacterium nucleatum, Parvimonas micra, Campylobacter rectus, Eikenella corrodens, Streptococcus mutans, and Streptococcus sobrinus levels were detected by a real-time polymerase chain reaction at the same points in time. Results: The clinical parameters improved in both the groups. At the follow-up assessment, PPD was significantly decreased in the SRP+PT group (P=0.00). Further, PPD and CAL showed significantly greater changes in the SRP+PT group than in the SRP group (PPD, P=0.03; CAL, P=0.04). P. gingivalis and T. forsythia levels decreased in this group, but no significant intergroup differences were noted. Conclusions: Adjunctive PT seems to have clinical benefits, but evidence of its antimicrobial effects is not sufficient. Long-term studies are necessary to develop the most effective PT protocol and compare the effectiveness of PT with and without exogenous photosensitizers.

  • KVN phase Calibrator Survey(KVNCS)는 VLBI 관측 시 대기의 불규칙한 수증기 분포로 인한 visibility 위상의 불규칙한 변화를 보정하기 위해 도입되는 phase-referencing 기법 등에서 필수요소인 위상보정 calibrator를 얻기 위한 연구이다. Phase-referencing 기법을 이용하여 위상을 보정하기 위해서는 대상 천체의 근접한 곳에 비교적 compact한 calibrator가 존재해야 한다. 또한 Asaki et al.(1996)에 의하면 대기의 coherence structure가 유지되기 위해서는 두 천체가 적어도 $5^{\circ}$ 이내의 분리각을 가져야 한다. 위상보정 calibrator에 대한 연구는 주로 2, 8GHz 대역에서 진행되어 왔고 최근에는 22GHz에서 VLBI 관측이 진행되고 있지만 천구상의 특정 영역에 국한되거나 calibrator들 간의 분리각이 여전히 크다. KVNCS는 천구상에서 calibrator의 분포를 좀 더 고르게 하고 더 많은 calibrator를 얻어 적어도 $5^{\circ}$ 이내의 분리각을 구현하고자 한다. 먼저, 단일경을 이용하여 KVNCS의 대상을 확보하기위하여 이들의 플럭스를 정확히 측정하였다. 2, 8GHz 대역에서 관측된 VLBA(Very Long Baseline Array) Calibrator Survey(VCS) 목록을 기초로 power-law를 가정하여 22GHz에서 100mJy 이상일 것으로 예상되는 천체 2503개를 KVNCS 단일경 연구의 후보로 선정하였다. KVN 연세와 울산 전파망원경경을 이용하여 2009년 12월부터 2011년 3월까지 2298개의 플럭스 측정 관측을 진행하여 22GHz에서 약 77%, 43GHz에서 약 23%의 검출률을 얻었다. 또한 이 천체들의 공간분포도 $5^{\circ}$의 분리각을 만족하는 것을 확인하였다. 앞으로 KVNCS 단일경 결과를 활용하여 KVN 각 사이트의 위치 정보를 비롯하여 22GHz KVN VLBI 관측을 통해 KVN 위상보정 calibrator를 확보 할 계획이다.

치아우식증 유발세균의 모자감염 (Prevention of Mother-to-child Transmission of Streptococcus mutans)

  • Objective: Transmission of S. mutans, a major dental caries pathogen, occurs mainly during the first 2.5 years of age. Children appear to acquire S. mutans mostly from their mothers, but few studies have investigated preventive effect of xylitol to S. mutans transmission from mother to child. The aim of this study was to perform a follow-up evaluation the preventive effect of xylitol chewing gum of the S. mutans of children's oral cavities, which included the characteristics of vertical transmission from mother to child. Methods: The mothers voluntarily participating in a women's oral health prevention program were divided into two groups (a control and a xylitol group). The subjects were 20 mother-child pairs, who were monitored for 30 months. Xylitol chewing gum group had consumed 2 gum pellets, 3 times a day for 24 months, and then they were followed until 30 months. At baseline, 24 and 30 months whole stimulated saliva samples were collected from the mothers. Children were also recruited from 6 months to 30 months after birth and were collected their dental plaque samples. After isolation and identification, the analysis of the colony count, transmission electron microscopy and real-time RT-PCR were performed to analyze the characteristics of S. mutans. Results: The S. mutans counts decreased steadily in the xylitol group at 24 months, but increased at 30 months. The similar results were showed at their children. While the glucan synthesis was decreased at xylitol group both mother and child. The expression of gtfB, gtfD and ftf were significantly reduced in the xylitol group both mother and child (p<0.05). Conclusions: These findings indicate that chewing xylitol gum over a long period may decrease the expression of the genes associated virulence and reduced the glucan synthesis of S. mutans, which can result the preventing the mother-to-child transmission of S. mutans.

  • There was in a building and with the technical advance for a energy saving the secret efficiency of the building improved together and continuously was come. The indoor air environment brought about the deterioration which is remarkable because of it. But time of most the indoor air environmental matter is one in the element which healthily affects biggest in the moderns who lives from the interior space. Today the plan for the air environmental maintenance which dwelling space is appropriate is demanded, is the actual condition where the method of the ventilation control which is energy saving and efficient is necessary. From the research which it sees, number of ventilation 0.7 time of the aeration which is a domestic legal baseline is excessive is judged from the research which sees, The sleep hour assumes it stays most long the hour when, number of ventilation 0 time 0.1 times 0.4 times $CO_2$ consistency measurements and analyzes number of ventilation conclusive escape. And $CO_2$ peak point control leads it decides a data, effective and it talks an energy saving circulation control method and it does to sleep.

휴대용 기체 크로마토그래피 / 광이온화 검출기 시스템의 개발 (Development of Portable Gas Chromatography / Photoionization Detector System)

  • 기체시료 채취기와 짧은 모세관 컬럼(내경 0.32 mm, 길이 3 m), 광이온화 검출기 및 진공펌프로 구성되어, 컬럼의 출구 압력이 대기압보다 낮은 압력에서 조작되는 휴대용 기체 크로마토그래피 시스템을 개발하였다. 컬럼의 규격은 Golay식을 이용한 계산 결과를 기초로 선택하였으며, 조작압력비(컬럼입구와 출구압력비)는 1.03~1.2의 범위가 적절하였고, 이 조건에서 0.87∼4.63 ml/min의 걸럼유량을 얻을 수 있었다. 구경이 다른 3개의 튜브로 구성된 기체시료 채취기는 자동으로 기체시료를 직접 컬럼에 빠른 속도로 반복하여 도입할 수 있으며, 좋은 재현성을 나타내었다. 컬럼출구 압력이 대기압 이하에서 조작되며 짧은 모세관 컬럼을 사용하는 기체 크로마토그래피는 최적 컬럼유량이 일반적인 크로마토그래피보다 커 신속한 분석이 가능하여, 40초 이내에 m-xylene 과 o-xylene의 바탕선 분리가 가능하였다. 시스템의 분리능력에 영향을 주는 인자는 시료 채취시간, 컬럼의 길이와 내경 및 조작압력비였고, 벤젠 유도체들을 사용하여 이들의 영향을 검토하였다.

노인요양시설 뇌졸중 노인을 위한 운동중심 연하훈련 프로그램의 효과 (The Effect of an Exercise-based Swallowing Training Program for Nursing Home Residents with Stroke)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a training program for swallowing and to test its effect on swallowing capacity and nutritional status among nursing home residents with stroke. Methods: A swallowing training program was developed by literature review, expert validation and a pilot test. A pretest and posttest quasi-experimental study design with nonequivalent control group was used to evaluate the effectiveness of the program. Swallowing training was conducted for thirty minutes, three times a week for 8 weeks. Swallowing capacity including dysphagia screening score, swallowing symptom questionnaire and tongue pressure, and nutritional status including body mass index and mid arm muscle circumference were measured at the baseline and at 8 weeks. Results: The exercised-based swallowing training program consisted of oromotor exercise, expiratory muscle strength exercise and effortful swallow. The participants were 77.2 years old on average. At the completion of 8-week program, the experimental group showed better scores in dysphagia screening (p=.039) and swallowing symptom questionnaire (p=.004) and a significant increase in tongue pressure (p=.003). Conclusion: The exercised-based swallowing training program was safely applied to nursing home residents with stroke and showed a significant improvement of swallowing capacity. Further studies are needed to identify its effect on the nutritional status.

CSR기반 좌굴 두께 요건을 고려한 이중선체유조선의 종방향 구조부재의 최적설계 연구 (Optimum Design for Longitudinal Strength Members of Double Hull Tankers with Central Long'l Bulkhead considering Buckling Thickness Requirement of Plate Panels based on Common Structural Rules)

  • The buckling assessment of plate panels described in common structural rules (CSR) is to be determined according to the buckling utilization factor with hull girder stresses calculated on net hull girder sectional properties. As the thickness requirement for the buckling assessment of plate panels is not explicitly given in CSR, a lot of time is spent to find the proper thickness of plate panels until reaching to an allowable buckling utilization factor. In this study, in order to reduce time and cost, the thickness requirement of plate panels satisfying buckling assessment was derived. The structural design system included with the thickness requirement for buckling assessment was developed. The system is called as Oil-tanker Automated Structural Investigation System (OASIS). The design result of longitudinal strength members using OASIS was verified by Nauticus Hull which is the rule scantling software of DNV. Finally, optimum design of a double hull tanker for the minimum weight using OASIS was presented.

Effects of Korean Red Ginseng on Dry Mouth: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Trial

  • Dry mouth is easily neglected if not associated with oral diseases. Consequently, xerostomatic patients often use unconventional therapies. In traditional Korean medicine, Korean red ginseng (KRG) has long been used to relieve dry mouth. However, no clinical trials have investigated whether KRG actually has an effect on dry mouth. This study was performed to evaluate the efficacy of KRG for dry mouth. We enrolled 100 volunteers with no obvious oral or salivary gland diseases and divided them into KRG and placebo groups. Each group was divided into six subgroups according to age and gender. The subjects received 6 g/day of KRG or placebo for 8 weeks. The dry mouth visual analog scale (VAS), salivary flow rate, and a dry mouth-related symptom questionnaire were evaluated at baseline and at 4 and 8 weeks. KRG treatment did not show any significant differences for any of the variables. However, KRG improved the dry mouth VAS at 4 weeks and dry mouthrelated symptoms at 8 weeks in women, but not in men. Subgroup analyses revealed that KRG markedly improved the dry mouth VAS in women of menopausal age (40 to 59 years) at 4 and 8 weeks. KRG may have beneficial effects for dry mouth in women, especially those of menopausal age, but not in men. Further investigation in post- and perimenopausal women is required to elaborate on these findings.

The effects of strengthening exercise, stretching and meditation on electromyography onset timing of the rectus femoris and gastrocnemius during vertical jump performance in healthy adults

  • Objective: Jump training helps increase the muscle power by improving the muscle strength and reaction time of the muscle in operation. The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of strengthening, stretching exercise and meditation on electromyographic (EMG) onset timing of rectus femoris and gastrocnemius muscle during vertical jump performance. Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: Ten healthy adults (5 male and 5 female) who were familiar with the vertical jumping task and had no lower extremity injuries or any bone or joint disorders, were recruited for this study. Muscle onset timing was measured by surface EMG. After EMG onset timing were measured during performing three baseline vertical jump trials, strengthening and stretching exercises of the rectus femoris and gastrocnemius, and meditation were performed in random order. EMG onset timing was measured during vertical jump after intervention, respectively. EMG value was averaged for the three trials and analyzed using one-way repeated ANOVA. Results: During vertical jump, EMG onset timing of gastrocnemius was a significant difference after intervention (p<0.05), and then there was significantly faster in strengthening exercise than meditation (p<0.05). Conclusions: These results indicate the potential positive effect of performing strengthening exercise of the gastrocnemius before a jumping event. Future research is required to identify the effects of intervention over a long period.

허혈성 뇌졸중 환자를 위한 조기 인지훈련과 맞춤형 전화코칭 프로그램의 효과 (Effectiveness of Early Cognitive Training and Tailored Telephone Coaching Program for Ischemic Stroke)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 허혈성 뇌졸중 환자에게 적용된 조기 인지훈련과 맞춤형 전화코칭 프로그램의 효과를 확인하기 위함이다. 연구 대상 총 28명은 실험군(n=15)과 대조군(n=13)에 배정되었다. 실험군에게만 4주간의 인지 훈련과 11회기 맞춤형 전화코칭이 제공되었다. 프로그램의 효과는 우울, 간이정신상태검사, 신경심리검사, 일상생활수행능력에 관한 도구를 이용하여 총 4회(사전, 4주째, 8주째, 12개월째) 측청하였다. 반복측정 분산분석법을 통한 자료 분석 결과 실험군은 대조군에 비해 간이 정신상태검사, 언어기억력 및 집행기능의 유의미한 향상이 나타났다. 특히 일상생활수행과 관련성이 깊은 집행기능의 향상은 괄목할 만한 결과였다. 이는 뇌졸중 후 인지기능의 회복과 독립적인 일상생활을 위해 조기 개입이 매우 중요하며 중·장기적 효과를 위해 주기적인 전화코칭이 함께 이루어져야 함을 시사한다.
