  • As facing the rapid advance of information technologies, the postal service is required to have capabilities of real-time logistics characterized by collaboration, ubiquity and intelligence which are necessary to the organizational management. In this study we discuss the design of the next generation information system based on real-time enterprise strategy to achieve real-time integrity and upgrade of postal information system. After briefly addressing the issues on developing information system and current situation, we provide the design direction and the framework of the to-be system. We develop detailed specification of each subsystem and provide an operational scenario. We believe when this framework is put into use, it can contribute to competitive performance by giving the integrity and consistency in implementing information systems of the Korea Postal Service.

  • In the Port Logistics system, Container Stowage planning is an important issue for cost-effective efficiency improvements. At present, Planners are mainly carrying out Stowage planning by manual or semi-automatically. However, as the trend of super-large container ships continues, it is difficult to calculate an efficient Stowage plan with manpower. With the recent rapid development of artificial intelligence-related technologies, many studies have been conducted to apply enhanced learning to optimization problems. Accordingly, in this paper, we intend to develop and present a Deep Q-Learning Network model for the Master Stowage planning of Container ships.

  • Modern enterprises should concentrate their efforts on continuous improvements in focusing their development in the core areas of business and to reduce their expenses and to enhance the quality of service for customers. The enterprises should focus on their core business while outsourcing the non-core areas of business to external specialists for the purpose of reducing cost. In South Korea, the enterprises are becoming increasingly interested in outsourcing their logistics function, especially in using IT technologies to the 3PL. The underlying reason for this trend is because the logistics costs of Korean businesses are much higher than that of other advanced countries. This higher logistic costs weakens the price competitiveness of Korean companies in the overseas export markets and even dampening the balance of international trade. Domestically, the higher logistics costs have the effect of raising prices in the local markets and thus affecting the local economy. Therefore a solution is urgently needed to save the logistics costs for the Korean companies in the interest of increasing national competitiveness. Outsourcing to the 3PL is becoming an attraction solution to this problem. Thanks to the increasing supply of professional logistics companies, many of the enterprises are switching to the Third Party Logistics. Nevertheless the enterprises do not yet utilize the integrated third-party logistics services on a full scale. This study analyzes present conditions and problems of the domestic third-party logistics market and suggests directions for future development. To solve the problems in the domestic third-party logistics market, four actions are recommended. First there should be new supporting policies in the laws and regulations and a system for small and medium sized companies to grow. Solutions to structural problems such as abnormal multilevel merchandising, illegal operation of private cars, and freight dumping should be implemented concurrently. Furthermore, standards for new companies entry into the market should be enhanced to allow only the competitive distribution companies to enter the market. Second, development of variety of educational programs is needed through establishing human-resource development system and specialized formal educational institution focused on this market. Third, the third party distribution companies, which seek long-term relationships with the owners of goods, should endeavor to strengthen their communications capability. Fourth, adoption of high-tech distribution system and the advent of U-Logistics, making use of RFID is urgent. This study has the limitation of objectivity because it does not include various comparative case studies about companies relating to the Third Party Logistics and domestic franchise companies. However, this study is significant to the extent that it analyzes the general present conditions and the problems of domestic Third Party Logistics and suggests recommendations for revitalization of Third Party Logistics. For future studies, analyzing the successful cases of international third party logistics companies' empirical data and studying the application into domestic franchise companies would improve the objectivity of the results. This would assist the domestic third party logistics companies not only to perform excellent domestic logistics function but also to enter into the global market for international logistics.

  • Recently, advanced sensors and communication technologies have been widely applied to advanced safety vehicles for reducing traffic accidents and injury severity. To apply the advanced safety vehicle technologies, it is important to quantify safety benefits, which is a fundamental for justifying application. This study proposed a methodology for quantifying the effectiveness of the Advanced Driver Assistant System (ADAS) with the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). When the proposed methodology is applied to 2008-2010 Gyeonggi-province crash data, ADAS would reduce about 10.18% of crashes. In addition, Adaptive Cruise Control, Automatic Emergency Braking System, Lane Departure Warning System and Blind Spot Detection System are expected to reduce about 10.43%, 10.17%, 9.96%, and 10.18%, respectively. The outcomes of this study might support decision making for developing not only vehicular technologies but also relevant safety policies.

  • Instead of existing bar code system, RFID is now the core sensor technique of Ubiquitous computing and it will bring a revolution of corporation's logistics systems. In recent years, RFID becomes the center of government and other related companies and furthermore, its basic and applied techniques and have been established as various international standards. Many major countries announced application cases in various fields and concentrate their effort to make new RFID technologies as well. Recently Korean government announced the basic plan of u-Korea and all-out plan of activation of RFID/USN. SO in this paper, we will discuss two things; the trends of RFID technologies and the printing tag technique, which is needed to spread of RFID item units.

  • The EPCglobal Network is a system which provides the information of items to suppliers, consumers, and customers by granting identification numbers on the goods based on the technologies of EPC(Electronic Product Code) and RFID(Radio Frequency Identification), and connecting the space to store those information by network. The EPCglobal architecture framework is also a service consolidating supply and process chain by using EPC for the common goal of business corporations. In the national level, it is necessary to define standard vocabularies for each location and logistics business process for RFID environment using the pre-constructed logistics information infrastructure. Therefore, we define the standard vocabularies and partially user vocabularies for international logistics on EPCglobal network architecture. Finally, we believe that our vocabularies contribute to describing the events fur the EPCglobal network architecture and actually providing usable platform via the XML implementation.

  • Advanced wireless network and sensor technologies are capable of collecting information such as temperature, humidity, weight, and location about objects at real time in logistics area. Besides, users want to be notified of contextual information about interest of objects whenever they want it and wherever they want it. To satisfy these requirements, applications should collect and analyze contextual information at real time, and must support a service that can notify it to wanted users. Event-based service is one of the way to satisfy these requirement of users. In this paper, we design an event notification system focused on location- and RFID-based logistics area. To do this, we present XML-based event expression model, ECA-based profile definition model, and an algorithm that has high scalability by distinguishing event filtering in two steps. Based on these designs, our implemented system can apply to not only logistics area but also intelligent traffic control system based on RFID or GPS devices.
