  • This paper describes stress analysis and fatigue limit evaluation of plate with V-notch and hole-notch by lock-in infrared thermography. Temperature variation of a specimen under cyclic loading is negatively proportional to the sum of principle stress change and the surface temperature measured by infrared camera is calculated to the stress of notch specimens, based on thermoelastic equation. And also, fatigue limitation can be evaluated by the change of intrinsic energy dissipation. Fatigue limitation of two notch specimens is evaluated as 164 MPa and 185 MPa, respectively and the stress measured by Lock-in infrared Thermography show good agreement within 10% error.

  • Infrared thermography uses infrared energy radiated from any objects above absolute zero temperature, and the range of its application has been constantly broadened. As one of the active test techniques detecting radiant energy generated when energy is applied to an object, ultrasound infrared thermography is a method of detecting defects through hot spots occurring at a defect area when 15~100 kHz of ultrasound is excited to an object. This technique is effective in detecting a wide range affected by ultrasound and vibration in real time. Especially, it is really effective when a defect area is minute. Therefore, this study conducted thermography through lock-in signal processing when an actual defect exists inside the austenite STS304 seamless pipe, which simulates thermal fatigue cracks in a nuclear power plant pipe. With ultrasound excited, this study could detect defects on the rear of a pipe by using an aluminium reflector. Besides, by regulating the angle of the aluminium reflector, this study could detect both front and rear defects as a single infrared thermography image.

  • This perform research of angle rated defect detection conditions and nuclear power plant piping defect detection by lock-In infrared thermography technique. Defects were processed according to change for wall-thinning length, Circumference orientation angle and wall-thinning depth. In the used equipment IR camera and two halogen lamps, whose full power capacitany is 1 kW, halogen lamps and target pipe's distance fixed 2 m. To analysis of the experimental results ensure for the temperature distribution data, by this data measure for defect length. Reliability of lock-In infrared thermography data is higher than Infrared thermography data. This through research, Shape of angle rated defect is identified industry place. It help various angles defect detection in the nuclear power plant in operation.

  • A study on the application of cooling defect detection was performed on the basis of a preceding study on the heated defect detection in nuclear piping loop system, using lock-in infrared thermography. A loop system with piping defects was made by varying the wall-thinning length, the circumference orientation angle, and the wall-thinning depth. The test was performed using an IR camera and a cooling device. Distance between the cooling device and the target loop system was fixed at 2 m. For analyzing experimental results, the temperature distribution data for cooling, and phase data were obtained. Through the analysis of this data, the defect length was measured. The reliability of the measurements for cooling defect conditions was shown to be higher in the lock-in infrared thermography data than the infrared thermography data.

  • This work is devoted to the technique application of lock-in infrared Thermography in the shipbuilding and ocean engineering industry. For this purpose, an exploratory study to find the optimized test conditions is carried out by the design of experiments. It has been confirmed to be useful method that the phase contrast images were quantified by a reference image and weighted by defect hole size. Illuminated optical intensity of lower or medium strength give a good result for getting a phase contrast image. In order to get a good phase contrast image, lock-in frequency factors should be high in proportion to the illuminated optical intensity. The integration time of infrared camera should have been inversely proportional to the optical intensity. The other hand, the difference of specimen materials gave a slightly biased results not being discriminative reasoning.

  • In this study, we analyzed and showed the enhanced thermal resolution of a lock-in infrared thermography system by employing a blackbody system and micro-register sample. The noise level or thermal resolution of an infrared camera system is usually expressed by a noise equivalent temperature difference (NETD), which is the mean square of the deviation of the different values measured for one pixel from its mean values obtained in successive measurements. However, for lock-in thermography, a more convenient quantity in the phase-independent temperature modulation amplitude can be acquired. On the basis of results, it was observed that the NETD or thermal resolution of the lock-in thermography system was significantly enhanced, which we consider to have been caused by the averaging and filtering effects of the lock-in technique.

  • The lock-in thermography was employed to evaluate the integrity of railway bogies. Prior to the actual application on railway bogies, in order to assess the detectability of known flaws, the calibration reference panel was prepared with various dimensions of artificial flaws. The panel was composed of structural steel, which was the same material with actual bogies. Through lock-in thermography evaluation, the optimal frequency of heat source was determined for the best flaw detection. Based on the defects information, the actual defect assessments on railway bogie were conducted with different types of railway bogies, which were used for the current operation. In summary, the defect assessment results with thermography method showed a good agreement as compared with the conventional inspection techniques. Moreover, it was found that the novel infrared thermography technique could be an effective way for the inspection and the detection of surface defects on bogies since the infrared thermography method provided rapid and non-contact mode for the investigation of railway bogies.

  • The successful use of adhesively bonded parts depends on the defect-free bond of the components. Therefore it is necessary to detect relevant faults and defects in an early state of the production. A 100% test should be pursued, but especially at complicated structures the detection of defects is not easy. Possible testing methods, which show a high potential for the NDT of adhesively bonded parts, are thermography based NDT methods. At present mainly two different procedures of active thermography are being used: Pulse and Lock-In Thermography. With pulse thermography the examined material is warmed up with a short energy pulse (light, eddy current or ultrasonic pulse) and the heat response is recorded after a certain time. The result is an infrared image which indicates material defects in different depths. This paper presents a variety of images showing the capability of Lock-In Thermography to image subsurface defects. Several examples of adhesives joints qualify the ultrasonic Lock-In-Thermography for the in-process quality control for adhesive bonded components.

  • All objects emit infrared above absolute temperature 0K. Infrared thermography is one of the nondestructive testing technologies to measure the temperature of the object. Infrared thermography shows infrared image which in a longer wavelength than visible light. Infrared technology can be employed regardless of the type or state of the objects. Thus, infrared thermography technique has been used in a wide variety of manufacturing processes in areas such as mechanical, electrical, chemical and medical applications. The advancement of using infrared technology has been increasing. In this paper, the principle of lock-in infrared thermography and its applications were investigated, and the direction of future development was discussed.
