Analysis of body sliding along cable

  • Paper discusess a dynamic engineering problem of a mass attached to a pendulum sliding along a cable. In this problem the pendulum mass and the cable are coupled together in a model described by a system of differential algebraic equations (DAE). In the paper we have presented formulation of the system of differential equations that models the problem and determination of the initial conditions. The developed model is general in a sense of free choice of support location, elastic cable properties, pendulum length and inclusion of braking forces. Examples illustrate and validate the model.

  • This study suggested 'Environmental Friendly City Model' and 'Energy Planning Process' according to the increasing necessity of 'Energy Saving Green City and 3 technologies like (1)Urban Spatial Modeling, (2)Urban Energy Consumption, (3)Urban Energy Supply Planning technologies were suggested which are able to support sustainable urban energy planning'. The results are as follows. (1)E-GIS modeling system was suggested as a 'Planning Supporting System'. (2)Urban Energy Consumption Algorithm was systemized with planning information of E-GIS DB. (3)Urban Energy System Location was deduced by integrating E-GIS DB and ANN algorithm.

Bayesian Modeling of Mortality Rates for Colon Cancer

  • The aim of this study is to propose a Bayesian model for fitting mortality rate of colon cancer. For the analysis of mortality rate of a disease, factors such as age classes of population and spatial characteristics of the location are very important. The model proposed in this study allows the age class to be a random effect in addition to its conventional role as the covariate of a linear regression, while the spatial factor being a random effect. The model is fitted using Metropolis-Hastings algorithm. Posterior expected predictive deviances, standardized residuals, and residual plots are used for comparison of models. It is found that the proposed model has smaller residuals and better predictive accuracy. Lastly, we described patterns in disease maps for colon cancer.

  • The multi degree of freedom system using magnetic levitation has been implemented successfully. Differently from another noncontact systems, the developed system was focused on the maximization of the system stiffness under the constraint of a limited input. The variation of a relative adopting point between the magnetic pair, its location on the fixed base, and the selection of optimal specifications for the main active magnetic elements give us another chance to realize the increased robustness against external disturbances with the less control inputs. In this paper, the overall development procedures are given including the optimal design, the dynamic modeling, the various control tests, and the main issues to be solved.

  • A large family of distributions arising from distributions of ordered data is proposed which contains other models studied in the literature. This extension subsume many cases of weighted random variables such as order statistics, records, k-records and many others in variety. Such a distribution can be used for modeling data which are not identical in distribution. Some properties of the theoretical model such as moment, mean deviation, entropy criteria, symmetry and unimodality are derived. The proposed model also studies the problem of parameter estimation and derives maximum likelihood estimators in a weighted gamma distribution. Finally, it will be shown that the proposed model is the best among the previously introduced distributions for modeling a real data set.

  • The simulation techniques of hydrologic data series have develped for the purposes of the design of water resources system, the optimization of reservoir operation, and the design of flood control of reservoir, etc. While the stochastic models are usually used in most analysis of water resources fields for the generation of data sequences, the indexed sequential modeling (ISM) method based on generation of a series of overlapping short-term flow sequences directly from the historical record has been used for the data generation in the western USA since the early of 1980s. It was reported that the reliable results by ISM were obtained in practical applications. In this study, we generate annual inflow series at a location of Hong Cheon Dam site by using ISM method and autoregressive, order-1 model (AR(1)), and estimate the drought characteristics for the comparison aim between ISM and AR(1).

Modeling and fast output sampling feedback control of a smart Timoshenko cantilever beam

  • This paper features about the modeling and design of a fast output sampling feedback controller for a smart Timoshenko beam system for a SISO case by considering the first 3 vibratory modes. The beam structure is modeled in state space form using FEM technique and the Timoshenko beam theory by dividing the beam into 4 finite elements and placing the piezoelectric sensor/actuator at one location as a collocated pair, i.e., as surface mounted sensor/actuator, say, at FE position 2. State space models are developed for various aspect ratios by considering the shear effects and the axial displacements. The effects of changing the aspect ratio on the master structure is observed and the performance of the designed FOS controller on the beam system is evaluated for vibration control.

  • The study summarized in this paper is concerned with the buckling of a longitudinal bar in reinforced concrete members by numerical analysis method. The objectives of this study are to investigate the stress transfer mechanism between concrete and reinforcment and to propose a modeling equation. The result gives an acceptable agreement between the proposed modeling equation and the computer package as follows: (1) the proposed equation is a possible prediction of the strain softening of concrete and reinforcement buckling. (2) the buckling of longitudinal bars is mainly influenced by the spacing of hoops and the location of the bar.

  • Our objective was to evaluate differences in linear regression versus multilevel(cross-level interaction model) modeling for affecting factors lumbar discectomy. The data were used in 2011 patients with HIRA sample data. Total number of analysis is 3,641 patients and 248 hospitals. The results of research model showed that the type and location of the hospital-level factors were significant. However, all factors of patient-level were similar in the two models. Therefore, it requires the selection of an appropriate model for a more accurate analysis of the influencing factors in the daily medical charge.

  • In this research, we determine the proper number of entrances in the evacuation facilities for civil and military personnel. The current standards on the emergency evacuation facility only sets the number of possible evacuees and the according architectural floor area since the evacuation have been completed. However, other than static standards such as the floor area, there is needs to consider the dynamic standards along with allowable evacuation time such as the number of entrance, staircases and so on. Therefore, we need to consider the number of entrances and their location in order to account for the allowed evacuation time of particular number of people in a set area. The outcome could be contributed to the standards which should contain the dynamic conditions associated with evacuation.
