  • The exceptional development of electronic device technology, the miniaturization of mobile devices, and the development of telecommunication technology has made it possible to monitor human biometric data anywhere and anytime by using different types of wearable or embedded sensors. In daily life, mobile devices can collect wireless body area network (WBAN) data, and the co-collected location data is also important for disease analysis. In order to efficiently analyze WBAN data, including location information and support medical analysis services, we propose a geohash-based spatial index method for a location-aware WBAN data monitoring system on the NoSQL database system, which uses an R-tree-based global tree to organize the real-time location data of a patient and a B-tree-based local tree to manage historical data. This type of spatial index method is a support cloud-based location-aware WBAN data monitoring system. In order to evaluate the proposed method, we built a system that can support a JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) and Binary JSON (BSON) document data on mobile gateway devices. The proposed spatial index method can efficiently process location-based queries for medical signal monitoring. In order to evaluate our index method, we simulated a small system on MongoDB with our proposed index method, which is a document-based NoSQL database system, and evaluated its performance.

  • The government of Gyeongbuk in Korea increased the financial input in the agricultural sector by 43% from 2008 through 2012. However, the productivity of the agricultural sector in Gyeongbuk rose only about 3.6% during the same period. This study evaluated the agricultural competitiveness of each city or county in Gyeongbuk using six evaluation indices (scale, productivity, finance input, location quotient, technical education, and total) and investigated the relationship between the indices and total values of agricultural productions. The results show that Sangju, Gyeongju, Andong, Uiseong, and Seongju have high competitiveness for the scale index. For the productivity index, Gimcheon, Mungyeong, Ulleung, Yeongju, and Seongju were highly evaluated. For the location quotient index, Yeongcheon, Uiseong, Cheongdo, Seongju, and Sangju have high competitiveness. Uiseong, Yeongdeok, Cheongsong, Gunwi, and Yeongyang were highly evaluated for the agricultural finance input index. For the agricultural technical education index, Chilgok, Sangju, Mungyeong, Uiseong, and Gyeongju have high competitiveness. Finally, Sangju, Euiseong, Yeongcheon, Gyeongju, and Andong were highly evaluated for the total competitive index, while Yeongdeok, Yeongyang, Goryeong, Uljin, and Cheongsong have a low competitiveness for the total competitive index. This study also found that out of five indices, scale, location quotient, and technical education indices have a positive and statistically significant effect on the total values of agricultural production. However, we did not find any statistically significant effect of the productivity and finance input indices on the total values of agricultural production. Hence, we can conclude that the government should focus their agricultural policy on scale, location quotient and education to improve total agricultural production.

  • This study is estimates telephone service demand based on empirical studies of telecommunication service demand model. First, the telephone charge(call price index) by each location and subscription fee bring about a negative effect to telephone distribution rate: while the other explanatory variables bring about a positive effect. Second, the flexibility of telephone charge in A location(relevant location) and the flexibility between the distance of A location and B location are negative values, while the flexibility of other explanatory variables is represented in a positive value. This means that the long distance call numbers from A location to B location are in inverse proportion against the phone charge(call price index) of A location and against the distance between A location and the distance of other locations except A location, while they are in direct proportion with an average call number per minute from A location to other locations except A location, and also with subscription numbers of A location, other subscribers in locations other than A location, and the total expenditures of A location.

  • Location management is very important issue in wireless communication system to trace mobile users' exact location. In this study, we propose a dynamic location area management scheme which determines the size of dynamic location area considering each user's characteristic. In determining the optimal location area size, we consider the measurement data as well as the historical data, which contains call arrival rate and average speed of each mobile user. In this mixture of data, the weight of historical data is derived by linear searching method which guarantees the minimal cost of location management. We also introduce the regularity index which can be calculated by using the autocorrelation of historical data itself. Statistical validation shows that the regularity index is the same as the weight of measurement data. As a result, the regularity index is utilized to incorporate the historical data into the measurement data. By applying the proposed scheme, the location management cost is shown to decrease. Numerical examples illustrate such an aspect of the proposed scheme.

  • A sudden change of stiffness in a structure, associated with the events such as weld fracture and brace breakage, will cause a discontinuity in acceleration response time histories recorded in the vicinity of damage location at damage time instant. A new damage index is proposed and implemented in this paper to detect the damage time instant, location, and severity of a structure due to a sudden change of structural stiffness. The proposed damage index is suitable for online structural health monitoring applications. It can also be used in conjunction with the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) for damage detection without using the intermittency check. Numerical simulation using a five-story shear building under different types of excitation is executed to assess the effectiveness and reliability of the proposed damage index and damage detection approach for the building at different damage levels. The sensitivity of the damage index to the intensity and frequency range of measurement noise is also examined. The results from this study demonstrate that the damage index and damage detection approach proposed can accurately identify the damage time instant and location in the building due to a sudden loss of stiffness if measurement noise is below a certain level. The relation between the damage severity and the proposed damage index is linear. The wavelet-transform (WT) and the EMD with intermittency check are also applied to the same building for the comparison of detection efficiency between the proposed approach, the WT and the EMD.

  • This paper develops a risk index based on an indicator of risk assessment in terms of coastal activity location and accident type. The risk index is derived from a formula which adds the consequence of failure to a vulnerability value, then subtracts the mitigation value. Specifically, the consequence of failure is the number of casualties in coastal activity locations. An indicator of vulnerability refers to coastal environment elements and social elements. A pointer of mitigation includes managerial and organizational elements that indicate the capabilities of coastal activities. A risk rating of coastal activity location is found from a risk matrix consisting of the accident location and type. The purpose of this study is to prevent accidents at coastal activity locations by allowing the Coastal police guard to monitor effectively and inform visitors of potential risks.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the gingival response to the location of the crown margin and the gingival response to the period of crown placement. Twenty one patients were selected for this study. The patients fitted into the research condition. The crown margins of anterior teeth were located at crest and supragingivally. The crown margins of posterior teeth were located at crest, subgingivally and supragingivally. Plaque index and gingival index were measured before tooth preparation and 1 week,4 weeks, 6 weeks after crown placement. The results were as follows: 1. There was no significance in the gingival response to the location of crown margin in short term period. 2. As the period of crown placement was extended, plaque index and gingival index were gradually increased. 3. Plaque index and gingival index of tooth surfaces were increased in the order of the interproximal surfaces, lingual surfaces and buccal or labial surfaces.

  • Release of hazardous and flammable gas is a significant contributor to risk. The ignition of flammable gas clouds can lead to explosion accidents in the offshore installations. A gas detector, which is one of active protect systems, brings the module into a safe state through emergency shut down processes and reduces the damage by eliminating the dangerous releases. It is critical to understand the gas release, the wind field, and the complex geometry of installations to determine gas detector placement. In this paper, the Gas detector Location Index (GLI) which is a novel index for optimal detector location determination to efficiently prevent explosion accident using probabilistic approach.
