Direct-contact heat transfer of single droplets in dispersed flow film boiling: Experiment and model assessment

  • Direct-contact heat transfer of a single saturated droplet upon colliding with a heated wall in the regime of film boiling was experimentally investigated using high-resolution infrared thermometry technique. This technique provides transient local wall heat flux distributions during the entire collision period. In addition, various physical parameters relevant to the mechanistic modelling of these phenomena can be measured. The obtained results show that when single droplets dynamically collide with a heated surface during film boiling above the Leidenfrost point temperature, typically determined by droplet collision dynamics without considering thermal interactions, small spots of high heat flux due to localized wetting during the collision appear as increasing Wen. A systematic comparison revealed that existing theoretical models do not consider these observed physical phenomena and have lacks in accurately predicting the amount of direct-contact heat transfer. The necessity of developing an improved model to account for the effects of local wetting during the direct-contact heat transfer process is emphasized.

Visualization Study on Microscale Wetting Dynamics of Water Droplets on Dry and Wet Hydrophilic Membranes

  • The wetting dynamics of water droplets dispensed on the surface of dry and wet hydrophilic membranes were investigated experimentally from a microscale point of view. By using a high-speed, white-beam x-ray microimaging (WXMI) synchrotron, consecutive images displaying the dynamic motions of the droplets were acquired. Through analyzing the characteristics observed, it was found that the dry hydrophilic membrane showed local hydrophobicity at a certain point during the absorption process with apparent contact angles greater than 90. While on the other hand, the apparent contact angles of a water droplet absorbing into the wet membrane remained less than 90 and showed total hydrophilicity. The observations and interpretation of characteristics that affect the contact, wetting, recoiling, and dynamic behaviors of droplets are significant for controlling liquid droplet impingement in a desired manner.

WIND DRIVEN RAIN IMPACT ON A TALL BUILDING FACADE

  • To determine the trajectories and the impact of rain drops on the facade of a tall building, a particle tracking method is employed form steady state simulation of turbulent flow around the building. The simulation is performed for the upper part of the building comprising a detailed louver system. Rain is trapped at relative high rates on the roof and the penthouse, with Local Intensity Factors (LIF's) of the order of 1. The upper parapets and upper floors get a fair amount of wetting with LIF's of the order of 0.6. The wetting decreases downwards reaching values of 0.2 to 0.25 at the level of the louver system.

가솔린엔진 인젝터의 벽류 및 분무특성에 관한 실험적 연구 (Experimental Study on the Wall-Wetting Formation and Spray Characteristics of Gasoline Engine Injector)

  • 본 연구에서는 자동차용 가솔린엔진에 장착되는 인젝터의 연료공급 특성을 실험적으로 분석하였다. 4홀과 12홀 인젝터의 장착각 변화와 포트 마스킹의 형상변화에 따른 벽유량을 측정하고 분석하였다. 분무가시화 실험을 통하여 분무성장과정과 분사각, 연료미립화 및 분무도달거리를 분석하였다. 벽류측정 실험 결과, 벽유량은 흡기유동과 인젝터 장착각에 큰 영향을 받으며, 인젝터 장착각이 감소할수록 벽유량은 감소하였다. 마스킹의 경우 유동 면적이 감소하여 국소 유속이 증가할때 벽유량 감소에 효과를 보였다. 분무 가시화를 통하여 12홀 인젝터가 압력 변화에 대한 미립화의 강건성 측면에서 우수한 분무특성을 보였다.

안경용 초음파세척기를 이용한 소프트렌즈 세척 실태 조사와 세척용기에 따른 단백질 제거 효과 (The Investigation on Ultrasonic Cleaning of Soft Contact Lenses in Local Optical Shops and the Protein Removal Effect by Lens Containers)

  • 목적: 본 연구는 안경원에서의 안경용 초음파세척기를 이용한 소프트렌즈 세척 실태를 조사하고 세척용기를 달리하였을 때의 단백질 제거 효과를 비교하기 위하여 수행되었다. 방법: 서울시 소재 75개 안경원을 대상으로 소프트렌즈 세척 실태에 관한 설문조사를 실시하였다. 또한 인공누액을 사용하여 소프트렌즈에 인위적으로 단백질을 침착시킨 후 세척용기를 달리하여 안경용 초음파세척기로 세척한 후 단백질 잔존량을 측정함으로써 세척효율을 비교하였다. 또한 반복적인 초음파 세척으로 인한 소프트렌즈의 표면과 습윤성 변화를 분석하였다. 결과: 안경원에서 콘택트렌즈 세척에 안경용 초음파세척기를 이용하는 주목적은 신속함 때문임을 확인하였다. 세척용기로 플라스틱 렌즈 용기와 유리병 렌즈용기를 사용하고 안경용 초음파세척기로 소프트렌즈를 세척한 경우 유리병 렌즈용기를 사용하였을 때 세척효율이 높은 경향을 보였으나 유의성 있는 차이는 아니었다. 한편 반복적인 초음파 처리로 인하여 소프트렌즈의 표면과 습윤성의 변화가 나타남을 관찰할 수 있었다. 결론: 안경용 초음파세척기 이용 시 세척용기로 플라스틱 렌즈용기와 유리병 렌즈용기의 사용이 모두 효과적이었지만 반복적인 초음파 세척 시에는 세척용기를 사용하였다 하더라도 초음파로 인한 소프트렌즈의 변성이 우려되므로 주의를 기울여 사용하여야 것이다.

고온 강판의 분무냉각에 있어서 MHF 점에 관한 연구 (Study on Minimum Heat Flux Point in Spray Cooling of Hot Plate)

  • In this study, the minimum heat flux conditions are experimentally investigated for the spray cooling of hot plate. The hot plates are cooled down from the initial temperature of about $900^{\circ}C$, and the local heat flux and surface temperatures are calculated from the measured temperature-time history. The results show that the minimum heat flux point temperatures increase linearly resulting from the propagation of wetting front with the increase of the distance from the stagnation point of spray flow. However, in the wall region, the minimum heat flux point temperature becomes independent of the distance. Also, the experimental results show that the velocity of wetting front increases with the increase of the droplet flow rate.

Behaviour of unsaturated tuff- calcareous sand mixture on drying-wetting and triaxial paths

  • The aim of the paper is to study the hydro-mechanical behaviour of a tuff and calcareous sand mixture. A first experimental phase was carried out in order to find the optimal mixture. This showed that the material composed of 80% tuff and 20% calcareous sand provides the maximum mechanical strength. The second experimental phase concerns the study of the drying- wetting behaviour of the optimal mixture. Triaxial shear tests in saturated and unsaturated states at constant water content were carried out on samples initially compacted at the MPO. Experimental results let to deduce the parameters necessary for the prediction of the hydro-mechanical behaviour of pavement formulated from tuff and calcareous sand mixtures, related to moisture. This optimal mixture satisfies the regulation rules and hence constitutes a good local eco-material, abundantly available, for the conception of pavements.

강우침투에 따른 화강풍화토 사면의 얕은파괴 특성 (Shallow Failure Characteristics of Weathered Granite Soil Slope in accordance with the Rainfall Infiltration)

  • 본 연구는 화강풍화토로 구성된 절토사면에서 얕은파괴의 특성을 규명하고자 우리나라의 강우특성에 따른 한계투수계수를 산정하고, 국내에 분포하는 화강풍화토의 대표적 물성을 기준으로 절토사면의 파괴면까지의 수평거리, 사면의 경사각, 사면높이 그리고 강우로 인한 포화깊이 등에 따른 안정해석을 수행하여 그 결과를 분석하였다. 한계투수계수를 분석한 결과 국내의 지역별 강우특성을 고려한 최대 한계투수계수가 $7.16{\times}10^{-4}cm/sec$의 값으로 나타났다. 최대 한계투수계수 이하의 값을 갖는 국내의 화강풍화토로 구성된 절토사면에서 한계강우강도 이하의 강우가 최소 강우지속시간보다 오랫동안 지속될 때에는 포화깊이에 따른 얕은파괴의 검토가 고려되어져야 할 것으로 판단되었다. 또한, 가상파괴면이 발생하는 수평거리, 포화깊이, 강도정수 변화에 따른 사면안전율의 변화관계를 통해 절토사면의 얕은파괴 특성을 파악 할 수 있었다.

Some Aspects of Experimental in-Tube Evaporation

  • The heat transfer characteristics of refrigerant-oil mixture for horizontal in-tube evaporator have been investigated experimentally. A smooth copper tube and a micro-fin tube with nominal 9.5 mm outer diameter and 1500 mm length were tested. For the pure refrigerant flow, the dependence of the axial heat transfer coefficient on quality was weak in the smooth tube, but in the micro-fin tube, the coefficients were 3 to 10 times greater as quality increases. Oil addition to pure refrigerant in the smooth tube altered the flow pattern dramatically at low mass fluxes, with a resultant enhancement of the wetting area by vigorous foaming. The heat transfer coefficients of the mixture for low and medium qualities were increased at low mass fluxes. In the micro-fin tube, however, the addition of oil deteriorates the local heat transfer performance for most of the quality range, except for low quality. The micro-fin tube consequently loses its advantage of high heat transfer performance for an oil fraction of 5%. Results are presented as plots of local heat transfer coefficient versus quality.
