  • A self-administered questionnaire survey and face-to-face interviews were conducted on 150 local residents belonging to seven villages, 160 visitors and 86 experts in order to analyze the attitudes of groups of local residents, visitors as well as experts toward the development plan of Sobaeksan Jarak-gil. Reliability analysis and one-way ANOVA were performed on the data collected by a questionnaire survey using IBM SPSS Statistics 20.0 after coding. The Duncan Test was conducted as a post-hoc test. Based on the analytical results, in economic terms, the expert group expected an increase in income, improvement in living standards and increase in expenditure for the maintenance of local infrastructure. In environmental terms, the visitor group was highly concerned about the disruption of the local natural environment and ecosystem, destruction of local properties and landscape, increase in water/soil/air pollution and increase in solid waste and noise. In social and cultural terms, the expert group had higher expectation for excavation of traditional cultural properties, instillation of local patriotism and pride, and the visitor group was highly concerned about a rise in crime, destruction of indigenous culture/increase in imitations, and induction of conflicts between residents. It is estimated that these results will be used as basic data for establishing the development plan of the mountainous ecological trail reflecting opinions of various groups.

  • Acetylene-ethylene($C_2H_2-C_2H_4$) assay was carried out to find the heterotrophic nitrogen-fixing activities and distribution of nitrogen fixers in eleven different soil series which are located in Kyeonggi province. Following are the summaries of this study. 1. Acetylene-reducing activities were higher in Gwanghwal, Mangyeong and Buyong series which are derived from fluviomarine deposite than in Yeongsan, Hamchang and Pyeongtack series which are observed from continental alluvial plain. The lowest activities are observed in Yecheon, Hoegog, and Jisan series which are situated in local valley region. 2. Estimated amouts of $N_2$ per annum fixed by $N_2$-fixing heterotrophs were about 3.2kg in fuluvio marine soils, 2.6kg in continental alluvial plain and 2.0kg/10a in local valley region, respectively. 3. Azotobacter and Beijerinckia were not detected in any of the ten different soil series except in Pyeongtaeg series. However, Clostridia, anaerobic nitrogen fixer, was detected in order of ${\times}10^2$. It is assumed that these population are not enough to contribute to the nitrogen supply by the biological fixation in paddy soil. 4. For the assesment of heterotrophic nitrogen fixation in paddy soil, it must be presumed that aerobes, anaerobes and phototrophs which can grow on nitrogen free media may greatly contribute for the asymbiotic netrogen fixation.

  • In Korea, length of irrigation and drain canal is about 98,638 km. In the case of 2011, dredging on the irrigation and drain canal was 7,288 km about 3,290,483 $m^3$, cost of dredging was about 5.6 billion won and cost of dredging increases every year. (Korea Rural Community Corporation, 2013). In the case of land reclamation, the problem of cross-contamination due to leachate after landfill is expected, causing saturation of the landfill site, or complaints of landfill local residents, a number of problems. The ocean landfill is possible if the items of 14 types as defined in the Sea Pollution Prevention Law contained in sediment soil, such as chromium. In terms of cost and labor, it is need to develop a technology utilizing a processing method reasonable sediments for irrigation and drainage canal. The objective of this study was to analyze the characteristics of the sediment deposited on the irrigation and drain canal. it is to provide basic data for the scheme that can be efficiently recycled sediment deposited on the irrigation and drain canal.

  • This study reviewed the groundwater policies of USA as a benchmarking for the purpose of improving groundwater polices, regulations, and plans in Korea. Each state of the USA has its own unique groundwater policies. Recently, severe drought in the western parts of the USA resulted in the launch of the California Statewide Groundwater Elevation Monitoring (CASGEM) program. CASGEM classified a total of 515 alluvial groundwater basins of the California State to four prior groups (high, medium, low, and very low prioritization). In Texas, a total of 101 Groundwater Conservation Districts (GCDs) over the state has controlled groundwater pumping amounts in their own management areas and 16 Groundwater Management Areas (GMAs) over the state have directly managed groundwater aquifer. Direct management for aquifers by GMAs would be the most scientific method for groundwater management, which expected to provide water consumers the more advavnced groundwater service. These groundwater management strategies of the USA can be possibly considered in groundwater plans for national and local governmental authorities, which possibly results in more optimal groundwater management in Korea.

  • Groundwater accounts for more than 10% of the total water supply in Korea. However, the contribution of groundwater to public water supply systems has been poorly played role throughout the country except for Jeju Island. Compared with the groundwater uses in foreign countries, the pattern of groundwater use in Korea seems to be very deformed and unreasonable. Currently, the development and use of groundwater in Korea are mostly carried out by the individuals, and public sectors such as central and local governments are not actively involved in such activities. Private groundwater use and management will continue to cause groundwater depletion and pollution problems. It is necessary to actively enhance the role of public authorities in groundwater managements by engaging precise hydrogeological surveys and proper economic evaluation in the development and operation of groundwater sources. Also, in order to solve the problems that public water supply systems overly rely on the surface water sources, it is necessary to take policies that require the water supply companies to secure a variety of water sources.

  • To understand the hyrogeochemical variation of bedrock aquifer during underground space construction, various graphical methods including multiple-component plots and chemical trends were used to estimate the mixing rate between seawater and freshwater and to investigate the evolution of water quality. The water chemistry and mixing rate between fresh and sea waters, which are generally localized in the construction area (MW-7, in land), shows typical characteristics of freshwater that doesn’t affect its validity as seawater intrusion. Especially, the water chemistry of a MW-4 (coastline) was classified as Na-Cl type, Na-HCO3 type, and Ca-Cl type due to the influence of the seawater intrusion. And hydrogeochemical and isotopic data show that local freshwater is subjected to geochemical processes, such as reverse ion-exchange. Throughout the Chadha’s diagrams, four different case histories with the temporal and spatial variation of groundwaters in the study area were proposed, which is recommended to interpret the hydrogeochemical reactions effectively.

  • In this study, we applied DRASTIC and SINTACS models for the assessment of groundwater vulnerability to Buyeo-eup area in Buyeo-gun, Chungcheongnam-do, Korea. Currently, DRASTIC model is a main tool for the assessment of groundwater vulnerability, which has been widely applied for the multiple purposes related to local developments, construction projects, groundwater investigations, etc. since 1980s. Because DRASTIC model has been the sole tool used for the domestic environment, there has been doubt about the degree of reliability of the model, and a benchmark model has been sought by the many practitioners. The objective of this study is to check the applicability of SINTACS model to domestic environment, which is the first attempt in Korea as far as authors understand. The comparative results show that the DRASTIC assessment underestimates groundwater vulnerability of the aquifers composed of fractured bedrocks while that from the SINTACS model is relatively higher. Through this study, it is expected that SINTACS model serves as a reasonable alternative of DRASTIC model where the subsurface is composed of more than two different media such as fractured rocks and alluvium.

  • Drilling at unconsolidated layer can make the aquifer disturbed and reduce a productivity of groundwater well. Surge block and air surging were applied to a pumping well located in Jeungsan-ri, Changnyung-gun, to improve a well efficiency by removing clogging and fine-grained slime. Two experimental log-linear equations, $y_1=-0.1769\;ln(x_1)+0.4960$ and $y_2=-84.3358\;ln(x_2)+512.8162$, were proposed in this site, in which $x_1$ and $x_2$ are the number of surging event, $y_1$ is the amount of slime, and $y_2$ is a recovery time of groundwater level after air surging. Well loss exponent (P) decreased after surging, from 3.422 to 1.439, and the groundwater inflow from aquifer happened in all directions around a well with gradually increasing the homogeneity in a local aquifer's hydraulic property. It was revealed that long-term well development should be done in the pumping well which is located in unconsolidated sediments to increase a well productivity.

  • The main objective of this research was to estimate the total mass of nitrogen discharged from various sources in paddy field area of South Korea in 2010 and 2013. Input and output budgets for nitrogen were estimated by mass balance approach. The mass balance approach reduces the effect of flow variations, and the large scale approach minimizes local effects, resulting in easier and faster establishment of strategy for nonpoint pollution problems. Nitrogen inputs were chemical fertilizer, compost, atmospheric deposition, biological fixation, and agricultural water, while crop uptake, denitrification, volatilization, and infiltration were nitrogen outputs. The estimated total nitrogen inputs for paddy field in South Korea were $266,211ton\;yr^{-1}$, $260,729ton\;yr^{-1}$, while those of total nitrogen outputs were $168,463ton\;yr^{-1}$, $164,994ton\;yr^{-1}$ in 2010 and 2013, respectively. Annual amounts of potential nitrogen outflow from paddy field were $97,748ton\;yr^{-1}$, $95,735ton\;yr^{-1}$ in 2010 and 2013. Also, annual rate of potential nitrogen outflow were 36.7%, 36.7% in 2010 and 2013, respectively.

  • Blossom-end rot is probably the most recognizable Ca deficiency that affects fruit production including pepper. We investigated the induction of blossom-end rot during the period of rapid vegetative growth and fruit setting, and the effect of Ca fertilization on the suppression of blossom-end rot in pepper plants grown in a plastic-film house. During the first fruit setting period, more than 60% of pepper fruits larger than 8 cm showed the symptoms of blossom-end rot. Under the condition of transpiration occurring at a much faster rate, growing leaves of pepper plants could be the greater sinks for Ca than developing fruits. The incidence of blossom-end rot was significantly decreased after two weeks of Ca fertigation. Calcium application during the rapid vegetative growth and fruit setting period could be suggested as a preventive step to overcome the local Ca deficiency inducing blossom-end rot of pepper fruits.
