Updating calibration of CIV-based single-epoch black hole mass estimators

  • Black hole (BH) mass is a fundamental quantity to understand BH growth, galaxy evolution, and connection between them. Thus, obtaining accurate and precise BH mass estimates over cosmic time is of paramount importance. The rest-frame UV CIV ${\lambda}1549$ broad emission line is commonly used for BH mass estimates in high-redshift AGNs (i.e., $2{\leq}z{\leq}5$) when single-epoch (SE) optical spectra are available. Achieving correct and accurate calibration for CIV-based SE BH mass estimators against the most reliable reverberation-mapping based BH mass estimates is thus practically important and still useful. By performing multi-component spectral decomposition analysis to obtained high-quality HST UV spectra for the updated sample of local reverberation-mapped AGNs including new HST STIS observations, CIV emission line widths and continuum luminosities are consistently measured. Using a Bayesian hierarchical model with MCMC sampling based on Hamiltonian Monte Carlo algorithm (Stan NUTS), we provide the most consistent and accurate calibration of CIV-based BH mass estimators for the three line width characterizations, i.e., full width at half maximum (FWHM), line dispersion (${\sigma}_{line}$), and mean absolute deviation (MAD), in the extended BH mass dynamic range of log $M_{BH}/M_{\odot}=6.5-9.1$.

  • Recently many studies of Radar systems mounted on ground vehicles for autonomous driving, SLAM (Simultaneous localization and mapping) and collision avoidance have been reported. Since several pixels per an object may be generated in a close-range radar application, a width of an object can be estimated automatically by various signal processing techniques. In this paper, we tried to attempt to develop an algorithm to estimate obstacle width using Radar images. The proposed method consists of 5 steps - 1) background clutter reduction, 2) local peak pixel detection, 3) region growing, 4) contour extraction and 5)width calculation. For the performance validation of our method, we performed the test width estimation using a real data of two cars acquired by commercial radar system - I200 manufactured by Navtech. As a result, we verified that the proposed method can estimate the widths of targets.

  • In this paper, genetic algorithm based adaptive image enhancement filtering scheme is proposed and Implemented on FPGA board. Conventional filtering methods require a priori noise information for image enhancement. In general, if a priori information of noise is not available, heuristic intuition or time consuming recursive calculations are required for image enhancement. Contrary to the conventional filtering methods, the proposed filter system can find optimal combination of filters as well as their sequent order and parameter values adaptively to unknown noise types using structured genetic algorithms. The proposed image enhancement filter system is mainly composed of two blocks. The first block consists of genetic algorithm part and fitness evaluation part. And the second block consists of four types of filters. The first block (genetic algorithms and fitness evaluation blocks) is implemented on host computer using C code, and the second block is implemented on re-configurabe FPGA board. For gray scale control, smoothing and deblurring, four types of filters(median filter, histogram equalization filter, local enhancement filter, and 2D FIR filter) are implemented on FPGA. For evaluation, three types of noises are used and experimental results show that the Proposed scheme can generate optimal set of filters adaptively without a pioi noise information.

  • The electrochemical activity of the olivine type $LiMPO_4$ (M=transition metals) cathodes strongly depends on various factors, e.g., the transition metal element M, perturbative doping of the supervalent cations into Li site, composite formation with conductive additives, state of charge/discharge, and particle size and its geometries, etc. This is, therefore, an important issue of interdisciplinary between electrochemistry and solid state science towards practical applications. In order to shed light on this interesting but complicated issue with the transport properties and crystallographic aspects, systematic discussion will be made with the review of our recent publications; (1) first principle derivation of the electronic structures, (2) crystallographic mapping of the selected solid solutions, (3) quantitative elucidation of the electron-lattice interaction, (4) spectroscopic detection of the local environment with Mossbauer and EXAFS, (5) synthetic optimization of the electrode composite, and (6) electrochemical evaluation of the reaction kinetics, particularly on M = Fe, Mn.

Efficient Algorithm for Real-time Generation of Reflection Lines

  • Depending upon the method of the surface generation and the quality of the designed boundary curves, the resulting surfaces may have global or local irregularities in many cases. Thus, it would be necessary for the designer to evaluate the surface quality and to modify the surface. This is very important because the defect of the surface causes the rework of the dies, increasing cost and delivery time significantly. To simulate the reflection line test in the actual production line, a faster algorithm for generating reflection lines is presented. In this paper, among various surface interrogation methods using reflection lines, Blinn-Newell type of reflection mapping is applied to generate the reflection lines on the trimmed NURBS surfaces. The derivation of reflection lines is formulated as a surface-plane intersection problem (Jung 1994) and is solved by surface-contouring techniques. Also, for eliminating the discontinuity of reflection lines due to the configuration of reflection map, a modified reflection map is proposed. An efficient traced contouring technique is utilized for the computational efficiency and proves to be well suited for the real-time quality-assessment task.

  • This article discusses the state of a community forestry program in a protection forest in Indonesia, which has been running for almost two decades. We found that the program did not achieve its objective mainly because of frequent changes in regulations. There are also activities such as: measuring and mapping working area boundaries, drawing up a work plan, planting, maintenance and security, paying royalties to those who harvest forest resources, and submitting annual reports on land use to the district government head, which have not worked as expected. We also found that the major incentives for local people to participate in the program are getting certificates of management and the program's effectiveness in minimizing land-use conflicts. Participants perceived that their major role on the program is to follow farmer-group directives or government rules. To achieve the program's purposes, farmer groups need technical assistance related to protection-forest management and opportunities for financing.

  • It is necessary to construct an effective regional information system in facing the incoming information intensive society. Many local government in Korea began to recognize a need for constructing a GIS(Geographic Information System) and they are planning to construct GIS´s to improve their administrative efficiency. However, ti requires high-priced hardware, software, and an experienced operator to sue a GIS effectively. The purpose of this study is to develop the GIS program which can be sued with ease by common users. By developing a GIS functioned program using a coordinate recognition module by application of geo-spatial data, and a digital map which is already made, this program can be used efficiently only by only inputting attributes without high-priced hardware and software, and can be utilized easily to every purposes of work with geo-spatial data and attributes. MapObjects, mapping and GIS component, was employed to use geo-spatial data, and Access 97 from Microsoft to manage and attributes database. Visual Basic, objected-oriented language, was used to develop an application program. Results of this study were applied to constructing the Information system of Kanwon National University. This program could be used for various purposed by common users without additional hardware and software.

Mapping Submarine Bathymetry and Geological Structure Using the Lineament Analysis Method

  • The Honam-Jeju, Korea-Japan, and Korea-China subsea tunnel construction projects have drawn significant attention since the early 2000s. These subsea tunnels are much deeper than most existing natural shallow sea tunnels linking coastal areas. Thus, the need for developing new technologies for the site selection and construction of deep subsea tunnels has recently emerged, with the launch of a research project titled "Development of Key Subsea Tunnelling Technology" in 2013. A component of this research, an analysis of deep subsea geological structure, is currently underway. A ground investigation, such as a borehole or geophysical investigation, is generally carried out for tunnel design. However, when investigating a potential site for a deep subsea tunnel, borehole drilling requires equipment at the scale of offshore oil drilling. The huge cost of such an undertaking has raised the urgent need for methods to indirectly assess the local geological structure as much as possible to limit the need for repeated borehole investigations. This study introduces an indirect approach for assessing the geological structure of the seafloor through a submarine bathymetry analysis. The ultimate goal here is to develop an automated approach to the analysis of submarine geological structures, which may prove useful in the selection of future deep subsea tunnel sites.

Effective Map Building Using a Wave Algorithm in a Multi-Robot System

  • Robotics and artificial intelligence are components of IT that involve networks, electrical and electronic engineering, and wireless communication. We consider an algorithm for efficient navigation by building a precise map in a multi-robot system under conditions of limited and unlimited communications. The basis of the navigation algorithm described in this paper is a wave algorithm, which is effective in obtaining an accurate map. Each robot in a multi-robot system has its own task such as building a map for its local position. By combining their data into a shared map, the robots can actively seek to verify their relative locations. Using shared maps, they coordinate their exploration strategies to maximize exploration efficiency. To prove the efficiency of the proposed technique, we compared the final results with the results in $Burgard^{8}$ and $Stachniss.^{9-10}$ All of the simulation comparisons, which are shown as graphs, were made in four different environments.

Joint Optimization of Source Codebooks and Channel Modulation Signal for AWGN Channels (AWGN 채널에서 VQ 부호책과 직교 진폭변조신호 좌표의 공동 최적화)

  • A joint design scheme has been proposed to optimize the source encoder and the modulation signal constellation based on the minimization of the end-to-end distortion including both the quantization error and channel distortion. The proposed scheme first optimizes the VQ codebook for a fixed modulation signal set, and then the modulation signals for the fixed VQ codebook. These two steps are iteratively repeated until they reach a local optimum solution. It has been shown that the performance of the proposed system can be enhanced by employing a new efficient mapping scheme between codevectors and modulation signals. Simulation results show that a jointly optimized system based on the proposed algorithms outperforms the conventional system based on a conventional QAM modulation signal set and the VQ codebook designed for a noiseless channel.
