  • Integration analysis of multi-sensor satellite images is becoming increasingly important. The first step in integration analysis is image registration between multi-sensor. SIFT (Scale Invariant Feature Transform) is a representative image registration method. However, optical image and SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) images are different from sensor attitude and radiation characteristics during acquisition, making it difficult to apply the conventional method, such as SIFT, because the radiometric characteristics between images are nonlinear. To overcome this limitation, we proposed a modified method that combines the SAR-SIFT method and shape descriptor vector DLSS(Dense Local Self-Similarity). We conducted an experiment using two pairs of Cosmo-SkyMed and KOMPSAT-2 images collected over Daejeon, Korea, an area with a high density of buildings. The proposed method extracted the correct matching points when compared to conventional methods, such as SIFT and SAR-SIFT. The method also gave quantitatively reasonable results for RMSE of 1.66m and 2.45m over the two pairs of images.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient multi-object recognition and tracking scheme based on interest points of objects and their feature descriptors. To do that, we first define a set of object types of interest and collect their sample images. For sample images, we detect interest points and construct their feature descriptors using SURF. Next, we perform a statistical analysis of the local features to select representative points among them. Intuitively, the representative points of an object are the interest points that best characterize the object. in addition, we make the movement vectors of the interest points based on matching between their SURF descriptors and track the object using these vectors. Since our scheme treats all the objects independently, it can recognize and track multiple objects simultaneously. Through the experiments, we show that our proposed scheme can achieve reasonable performance.

  • Face detection using the LBP based feature descriptor has issues in that it can not represent spatial information between facial shape and facial components such as eyes, nose and mouth. To address these issues, in previous research, a facial image was divided into a number of square sub-regions. However, since the sub-regions are divided into different numbers and sizes, the division criteria of the sub-region suitable for the database used in the experiment is ambiguous, the dimension of the LBP histogram increases in proportion to the number of sub-regions and as the number of sub-regions increases, the sensitivity to facial orientation rotation increases significantly. In this paper, we present a novel facial region segmentation method that can solve in-plane rotation issues associated with LBP based feature descriptors and the number of dimensions of feature descriptors. As a result, the proposed method showed detection accuracy of 99.0278% from a single facial image rotated in orientation.

  • In this paper, we propose the automatic image-to-image registration of high resolution satellite images using local properties of tie points to improve the registration accuracy. A spatial distance between interest points of reference and sensed images extracted by Scale Invariant Feature Transform(SIFT) is additionally used to extract tie points. Coefficients of affine transform between images are extracted by invariant descriptor based matching, and interest points of sensed image are transformed to the reference coordinate system using these coefficients. The spatial distance between interest points of sensed image which have been transformed to the reference coordinates and interest points of reference image is calculated for secondary matching. The piecewise linear function is applied to the matched tie points for automatic registration of high resolution images. The proposed method can extract spatially well-distributed tie points compared with SIFT based method.

  • In this paper, we propose a loitering detection using trajectory probability distribution and local direction descriptor for intelligent surveillance system. We use a background modeling method for detecting moving object and extract the motion features from each moving object for making feature vectors. After that, we detect the loitering behavior person using K-Nearest Neighbor classifier. We test the proposed method in real world environment and it can achieve real time and robust detection results.

  • To solve the edge ringing or block effect caused by the partial differential diffusion in image enhancement domain, a new image enhancement algorithm based on bidirectional diffusion, which smooths the flat region or isolated noise region and sharpens the edge region in different types of defect images on aviation composites, is presented. Taking the image pixel's neighborhood intensity and spatial characteristics as the attribute descriptor, the presented bidirectional diffusion model adaptively chooses different diffusion criteria in different defect image regions, which are elaborated are as follows. The forward diffusion is adopted to denoise along the pixel's gradient direction and edge direction in the pixel's smoothing area while the backward diffusion is used to sharpen along the pixel's gradient direction and the forward diffusion is used to smooth along the pixel's edge direction in the pixel's edge region. The comparison experiments were implemented in the delamination, inclusion, channel, shrinkage, blowhole and crack defect images, and the comparison results indicate that our algorithm not only preserves the image feature better but also improves the image contrast more obviously.

  • In recent years, as near-duplicate image has been increasing explosively by the spread of Internet and image-editing technology that allows easy access to image contents, related research has been done briskly. However, BoF (Bag-of-Feature), the most frequently used method for near-duplicate image detection, can cause problems that distinguish the same features from different features or the different features from same features in the quantization process of approximating a high-level local features to low-level. Therefore, a post-verification method for BoF is required to overcome the limitation of vector quantization. In this paper, we proposed and analyzed the performance of a post-verification method for BoF, which converts SIFT (Scale Invariant Feature Transform) descriptors into 128 bits binary codes and compares binary distance regarding of a short ranked list by BoF using the codes. Through an experiment using 1500 original images, it was shown that the near-duplicate detection accuracy was improved by approximately 4% over the previous BoF method.

  • Panorama image is a single image obtained by combining images taken at several viewpoints through matching of corresponding points. Existing panoramic image generation methods that find the corresponding points are extracting local invariant feature points in each image to create descriptors and using descriptor matching algorithm. In the case of video sequence, frames may be a lot, so therefore it may costs significant amount of time to generate a panoramic image by the existing method and it may has done unnecessary calculations. In this paper, we propose a method to quickly create a single panoramic image from a video sequence. By assuming that there is no significant changes between frames of the video such as in locally, we use the FAST algorithm that has good repeatability and high-speed calculation to extract feature points and the Lucas-Kanade algorithm as each feature point to track for find the corresponding points in surrounding neighborhood instead of existing descriptor matching algorithms. When homographies are calculated for all images, homography is changed around the center image of video sequence to warp images and obtain a planar panoramic image. Finally, the spherical panoramic image is obtained by performing inverse transformation of the spherical coordinate system. The proposed method was confirmed through the experiments generating panorama image efficiently and more faster than the existing methods.

  • One of the best means to safeguard the confidentiality, security, and privacy of an image within the IoT-Cloud is through encryption. However, looking through encrypted data is a difficult process. Several techniques for searching encrypted data have been devised, but certain security solutions may not be used in IoT-Cloud because such solutions are not lightweight. We propose a lightweight scheme that can perform a content-based search of encrypted images, namely EEIRI. In this scheme, the images are represented using local features. We develop and validate a secure scheme for measuring the Euclidean distance between two descriptor sets. To improve the search efficiency, we employ the k-means clustering technique to construct a searchable tree-based index. Our index construction process ensures the privacy of the stored data and search requests. When compared with more familiar techniques of searching images over plaintexts, EEIRI is considered to be more efficient, demonstrating a higher search cost of 7% and a decrease in search accuracy of 1.7%. Numerous empirical investigations are carried out in relation to real image collections so as to evidence our work.

  • Face recognition has recently become one of the most popular research areas in the fields of computer vision, machine learning, and pattern recognition because it spans numerous applications, such as access control, surveillance, security, credit-card verification, and criminal identification. In this paper, we propose a simple descriptor called an ECSP(Extended Center-Symmetric Pattern) for illumination-robust face recognition. The ECSP operator encodes the texture information of a local face region by emphasizing diagonal components of a previous CS-LBP(Center-Symmetric Local Binary Pattern). Here, the diagonal components are emphasized because facial textures along the diagonal direction contain much more information than those of other directions. The facial texture information of the ECSP operator is then used as the input image of an image covariance-based feature extraction algorithm such as 2D-PCA(Two-Dimensional Principal Component Analysis). Performance evaluation of the proposed approach was carried out using various binary pattern operators and recognition algorithms on the Yale B database. The experimental results demonstrated that the proposed approach achieved better recognition accuracy than other approaches, and we confirmed that the proposed approach is effective against illumination variation.
