A new structural damage index for seismic fragility analysis of reinforced concrete columns is developed based on a local tensile damage variable of the Lee and Fenves plastic-damage model. The proposed damage index is formulated from the nonlinear regression of experimental column test data. In contrast to the response-based damage index, the proposed damage index is well-defined in the form of a single monotonically-increasing function of the volume weighted average of local damage distribution, and provides the necessary computability and objectivity. It is shown that the present damage index can be appropriately zoned to be used in seismic fragility analysis. An application example in the computational seismic fragility evaluation of reinforced concrete columns validates the effectiveness of the proposed damage index.
Fragility analysis is widely used for the seismic safety evaluation of a structure. In fragility analysis, damage evaluation is a crucial factor. Most of the present fragility analyses use the representative responses such as displacement and absorbed hysteretic energy as a tool of damage evaluation. But damage evaluation method that can represent the local damage of a structure is required in the case of piers of which the local damage can cause the whole failure of bridge system. Therefore this study proposes a damage index, which can represent the distribution and magnitude of local damage by using the Lee and Fenves'plastic-damage model. Using the proposed damage index, fragility curves and damage probability matrix of pier are produced and fragility analysis is performed.

This paper aims at investigating the damage process of steel members leading to the failure under strong repeated loading, proposing the damage index using various factors related to the damage, and developing the analysis method for evaluating the damage state. Cantilever-type steel members were analyzed under uniaxial load and combined with a constant axial load, considering a horizontal displacement history. In analyzing the models, loading patterns and steel types (SS400, SM570, Posten80) were considered as main parameters. From the analysis results, the effects of parameter on the failures mode, the deformation capacity, the damage process are also discussed. Each failure process was compared as steel types. Consequently, the failure of steel members under strong repeated loading was determined by loading. Especially it was seen that the state of the failure is closely related to the local strain.
Damage assessment and Damage index for RC members failed in flexure was investigated by using the nonlinear finite element analysis, included with nonlocal constitutive law, which is analyzed for the localization of the failure on the post-peak region. In the nonlcal constitutive law, The local strains obtained at gauss points were averaged over a particular length, i.e. characteristic length and it was used to evaluate the damage of RC column member. As the analysis results, The value of nonlocal strain shows less mesh sensibility. In the damage assessment, It was confirmed that evaluations of damage of RC member were able to use nonlocal compressive strain on a cover concrete and a core concrete of the member. Moreover it was confirmed that damage process for the statically indeterminate structure was able to evaluate the damage context of the component members of the structure.
Since public facilities have high property values and are directly exposed to the flood hazard, they account for the highest share of disaster damages compared to other assets such as housing, industry, vehicle and agriculture in case of floods. Therefore, this study was conducted to develop and suggest the potential flood damage index for public facilities to evaluate potential flood damage of specific local government directly or indirectly as a tool for decision-making related to flood prevention, maintenance, management, and budget allocation. The flood damage assessment system proposed in this study was evaluated in 231 local governments nationwide. Evaluation results showed that higher values were obtained in Seoul metropolitan government, Gyeonggi-do (province), coastal areas in Gyeongsangnam-do (province), and Jeju island.
An attempt is conducted to explore the relationship between the macroscopic global damage and the local damage of shear-type RC frames. A story damage index, which can be expressed as multi-variate functions of modal parameters, is deduced based on the tridiagonal matrix of the shear-type frame. The global damage model is also originated from structural modal parameters. Due to the connection of modal damage indexes, the relationship between the macroscopic global damage and the local story damage is reasonably established. In order to validate the derivation, a case study is carried out via an 8-story shear-type frame. The sensitivities of modal damage indexes to the location and severity of local story damages are studied. The evolution of the global damage is investigated as well. Results show that the global damage is sensitive to the degree of story damage, but it's not sensitive to its location. As the number of the damaged stories increases, more and more modes will be involved. Meanwhile, the global damage evolution curve changes from the concave shape to the S-type and then finally transforms into the convex shape. Through the proposed story damage, modal damage and global damage model, a multi-level damage assessment method is established.
A hybrid damage monitoring scheme using parallel acceleration-impedance approaches is proposed to detect girder damage and support damage in steel plate-girder bridges which are under ambient train-induced excitations. The hybrid scheme consists of three phases: global and local damage monitoring in parallel manner, damage occurrence alarming and local damage identification, and detailed damage estimation. In the first phase, damage occurrence in a structure is globally monitored by changes in vibration features and, at the same moment, damage occurrence in local critical members is monitored by changes in impedance features. In the second phase, the occurrence of damage is alarmed and the type of damage is locally identified by recognizing patterns of vibration and impedance features. In the final phase, the location and severity of the locally identified damage are estimated by using modal strain energy-based damage index methods. The feasibility of the proposed scheme is evaluated on a steel plate-girder bridge model which was experimentally tested under model train-induced excitations. Acceleration responses and electro-mechanical impedance signatures were measured for several damage scenarios of girder damage and support damage.
The damage level in structures (global scale), elements (intermediate scale) and sections (local scale) can be evaluated using a single parameter called the "Damage Index". Part of the damage attributed to the local scale relates to the damage sustained by the materials of which the section is made. This study investigates the damage of concrete subjected to monotonic compressive loading using four different damage models - one proposed here for the first time and three other well-known models. The analytical results show that the proposed model is promising yet simple and effective for evaluating the damage of concrete. The proposed damage model of concrete with its promising characteristics indicated, appears to be a useful tool in the damage assessment of structures made of concrete.
