Development of wall-thinning evaluation procedure for nuclear power plant piping - Part 2: Local wall-thinning estimation method

  • Flow-accelerated corrosion (FAC), liquid droplet impingement erosion (LDIE), cavitation and flashing can cause continuous wall-thinning in nuclear secondary pipes. In order to prevent pipe rupture events resulting from the wall-thinning, most NPPs (nuclear power plants) implement their management programs, which include periodic thickness inspection using UT (ultrasonic test). Meanwhile, it is well known in field experiences that the thickness measurement errors (or deviations) are often comparable with the amount of thickness reduction. Because of these errors, it is difficult to estimate wall-thinning exactly whether the significant thinning has occurred in the inspected components or not. In the previous study, the authors presented an approximate estimation procedure as the first step for thickness measurement deviations at each inspected component and the statistical & quantitative characteristics of the measurement deviations using plant experience data. In this study, statistical significance was quantified for the current methods used for wall-thinning determination. Also, the authors proposed new estimation procedures for determining local wall-thinning to overcome the weakness of the current methods, in which the proposed procedure is based on analysis of variance (ANOVA) method using subgrouping of measured thinning values at all measurement grids. The new procedures were also quantified for their statistical significance. As the results, it is confirmed that the new methods have better estimation confidence than the methods having used until now.

  • Fatigue strength, electrical conductivity and stress-corrosion-cracking resistance are considered as important factors at aircraft Al alloys, therefore Al7050 alloy has been developed to improve such properties. However, hammer-forged Al7050 parts showed the undesirable structures such as severe local grain coarsening and inhomogeneous material flow, resulted in the degraded mechanical properties. In this paper, process conditions are investigated for elimination of the grain coarsening and improved material flow during forging process by both of experiments and FEM analysis. Particular interest has been given to understand role of preform shape on the grain coarsening behavior and magnitude of the hammer forging load The use of preform has been beneficial for reduction of the forging load and elimination of the grain coarsening. However, in the cases of as received bar and the round bar, which was machined to 2.5mm thickness in surface layer, some degree of local grain coarsening behavior has been observed. The optimized preform shape could be properly designed by applying the FEM simulation.

  • Fracture behavior and pipe strength are very important to the integrity of energy plants, ocean structures, and so forth. The pipes of energy plants and ocean structures are subject to local wall thinning, resulting from severe erosion-corrosion damage. Recently, the effects of local wall thinning on fracture strength and fracture behavior of piping systems have been the focus of many studies. In this paper, the elasto-plastic analysis is performed by FE code ANSYS on straight pipes with wall thinning. We evaluated the failure mode, fracture strength and fracture behavior, using FE analysis. Also, the effect of the axial strain on deformations and failure modes was estimated by FE analysis.

A Study on 3-Dimensional Profilometry of Steam Generator Tube Using a New Eddy Current Probe

  • There are many types of the geometric transitions such as dent, bulge, protrusion, expansion, etc, on the inner and outer surfaces of heat exchanger tubes, steam generator tubes, and condenser tubes of nuclear power plants. Such geometric transition causes a local residual stress in heat exchanger tubes and acts as a structural factor accelerating the evolution of defects, in particular stress corrosion cracks. In the conventional eddy current test methods, the bobbin coil profilometry can provide 2-dimensional geometric information on the variation of the average inner diameter along the tube length, but the 3-dimensional distribution and the quantitative size of a local geometric transition existing in the tube cannot be measured. In this paper, a new eddy current probe, developed for the 3-dimensional profile measurement, is introduced and its superior performance is compared with that from the conventional bobbin coil profilometry for the various types of geometric transition. Also, the accuracy of the probe for the quantitative profile measurement is verified by comparing the results with that from the laser profilometry. It is expected that the new eddy current probe and techniques can be effectively used for an optimization of the tube expansion process, and the management of tubes with geometric transitions in service.

분극저항 측정기법을 이용한 혼합 시멘트 모르타르의 임계 염화물 농도에 대한 연구 (A Study on Chloride Threshold Level of Blended Cement Mortar Using Polarization Resistance Method)

  • 콘크리트 내 철근부식상에 있어 염화물이온의 중요성은 임계염화물농도 (CTL)로서 나타내어진다. CTL은 철근을 둘러싼 부동태피막의 파괴를 유지하게끔 하는데 필요한 염화물량으로 정의되며 염화물량이 CTL에 도달할 경우 철근의 부식은 시작된다. CTL의 중요성에도 불구하고 기존의 콘크리트 구조물의 내구수명 예측을 위한 염화물량은 1 $m^3$의 단위체적당 1.2 kg 혹은 시멘트 중량당 0.4%로서 제시되고 있으며 이는 염해부식환경하의 다양한 환경 인자에 따른 한계치 설정에 대한 불확실성을 고려하지 않은 값이라 할 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 부식개시의 지표로서 결합재의 특성에 따른 부식저항성 및 부식진전에 따른 비율에 대하여 실험연구를 수행하였다. 실험시편으로는 직경 10 mm의 원형 철근을 모르타르 내 몰드에 삽입하여 OPC와 40%OPC+60%GGBS, 70%OPC+30%PFA 및 90%OPC+10%의 SF을 치환한 시편에 대하여 W/C=0.4의 조건으로서 실험을 수행하였다. 각 시편에는 다시 10단계 (0.0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 and 3.0% by weight of binder)의 내재염분 농도조건을 부여하여 부식전류를 측정하였다. 시편은 28일 양생을 하였으며 수분손실 및 염분손실을 방지하고자 폴리에틸렌 필름을 이용한 도포양생을 수행하였다. 선형분극저항 측정법에 의한 실험결과로서 각 결합재 치환률에 따른 부식임계치가 결정되었다. 또한 OPC, 60%GGBS, 30%PFA 및 10%SF의 혼입치환률을 적용한 시멘트 모르타르의 CTL 값은 시멘트 중량당 1.6%, 0.45%, 0.8% 및 2.15%의 총염화물 농도로 나타나고 있음을 확인하였다.

하중저항계수설계법 및 정밀해법에 의한 PFRP I형 단면 압축재의 국부좌굴강도 (Local Buckling Strength of PFRP I-Shape Compression Members Obtained by LRFD Design Method and Closed-Form Solution)

  • Fiber reinforced polymeric plastic (FRP) materials have many advantages over conventional structural materials, i.e., high specific strength and stiffness, high corrosion resistance, right weight, etc. Among the various manufacturing methods, pultrusion process is one of the best choices for the mass production of structural plastic members. Since the major reinforcing fibers are placed along the axial direction of the member, this material is usually considered as an orthotropic material. However, pultruded FRP (PFRP) structural members have low modulus of elasticity and are composed of orthotropic thin plate components the members are prone to buckle. Therefore, stability is an important issue in the design of the pultruded FRP structural members. Many researchers have conducted related studies to publish the design method of FRP structures and recently, referred to the previous researches, pre-standard for LRFD of pultruded FRP structures is presented. In this paper, the accuracy and suitability of design equation for the local buckling strength of pultruded FRP I-shape compression members presented by ASCE are estimated. In the estimation, we compared the results obtained by design equation, closed-form solution, and experiments conducted by previous researches.

유동형태 변화가 배관 곡관부 대류열전달에 미치는 영향 (Effects of the Changes in Flow Pattern on Convective Heat Transfer in the Vicinity of Pipe Elbow)

  • 본 연구에서는 배관 곡관부의 유동가속부식을 일으키는 인자 중 수력학적 인자인 유동형태 변경에 따른 영향을 분석하고 부식을 저감시키는 연구를 추진하였다. 열전달과 물질전달, 물질전달과 유동가속부식의 상사성에 대해 이론적 분석을 통해 확인하고 상용 수치해석 프로그램을 이용하여 국소대류열전달계수를 해석함으로써 곡관부의 물질전달 특성에 대해 고찰하였다. 곡관부 상류의 직관부 내표면 안쪽과 바깥쪽에 요철을 설치하였을 때 최대 국소열전달계수는 기본유동에 비하여 현저히 감소하여 요철의 위치와 형태에 따라 차이가 있으나 24.9%까지 감소함을 확인하였으며, 곡관부 상류의 직관부에 가인드 베인을 삽입하면 가이드 베인에 의한 배관 내측면적 크기에 따라 차이가 있으나 최대 국소열전달계수가 기본유동에 비해 12.5%까지 감소함을 확인하였다.

Ti-6Al-4V 고강도 볼트 성형 기술 개발 (Hot Forging Process of High Strength Ti-6Al-4V Bolt)

  • Since fastener bolt for airplane require high specific strength and corrosion resistance, Ti-6Al-4V alloy is widely used. However, the Ti-6Al-4V bolt is generally manufactured by cutting and rolling because of their poor workability. The aim of present work is to develop hot forming technology for high strength Ti-6Al-4V. Various heat-treatments were applied to specimen in order to increase hot-workability and prevent galling with die Multiple forging were simulated with FE code to determine optimum process parameters including specimen temperature, strain rate, local strain, and thermal shrinkage. Forged samples were heat-treated again to increase their mechanical properties.

  • Al ally 7050 has been developed for higher strength and improved property against stress-corrosion cracking. Since the use of this alloy becomes more important for forged aircraft structural components. $\phi$ 65mm extruded billet has been forged for a highly-stressed aircraft parts. After forging processing and heat treatment, the forged parts showed undesirable microstructure caused by severe local grain coarsening at the surface layer and heavily-localized metal flow, the analysis of resulted in degraded mechanical properties. The above results have been compared to simulation by using the DEFORM-3D and those showed the thermomechamical processing must be optimized in terms of forging temperature, strain rate and deformation amount. To prevent the grain coarsening at the surface layer $\varepsilon$ heavily-localized grain flows.

엘보우의 붕괴모멘트에 미치는 감육결함의 영향 (Effect of Wall Thinning Defect on the Collapse Moment of Elbow)

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of local wall thinning on the collapse of elbow subjected to internal pressure and bending moment. Thus, the nonlinear 3D finite element analyses were performed to obtained collapse moment of elbow containing various wall thinning defects under two loading; modes (closing and opening modes) and defect locations (intrados and extrados). From the results of analyses, the influence of wall thinning defect on the global moment-rotation behavior of elbow was discussed, and the dependance of collapse moment of elbow on wall thinning depth, length, and circumferential angle was investigated under different loading mode and defect location.
