A miniature size electrostatic induction motor has been fabricated and studied with emphasis on the role of the surface resistivity, the relative dielectric constant and the charge relaxation time constant of the rotor surface materials and the rotor liner materials, which, however, control the surface charge induction and relaxation on the rotor material surface and the field intensity between the rotor and the stator of the motor. It is found that the surface resistivity and/or the relative dielectric constant, and the charge relaxation time constant of the rotor surface material enfluenced significantly to motor speed controlled by the surface charge induction and relaxation on the rotor surface depending on the applied voltage and/or frequency changing. The resistivity of the rotor liner material is also found to be effected to the motor speed greatly by control of the field intensity between the rotor and the stator and of the surface charge distribution of the induced charge on the rotor. As a result, a maximum no load rotor speed of the motor tested was about 5500 rpm at the applied voltage of 4.5 kV and the frequency of 220 Hz for the case of the rotor surface material of $BaTiO_{3}$ 80% in the resin binder layered on the copper-foil rotor liner material.

For application to micro fluid control systems such as ${\mu}TAS$ (Micro Total Analysis Systems) and DDS (Drug Delivery Systems), it is very significant to handle precise and minute flow rates with low pressure pulsation. In this study, a novel valveless piezoelectric pump using peristaltic motion with three disk type PZT actuators is presented. The newly devised pump with an effective size of $70mm{\times}60mm{\times}55mm$ has three actuator layers connected in series from inlet to outlet. The PZT actuator has a maximum displacement of 240 ${\mu}m$ and a maximum force of 1.6 N. When the driving voltage for PZT actuators is sequentially applied with a certain phase shift, the pumping is performed by peristaltic motion of liquid volume. The working fluid is shut off without the driving voltage. Three methods for sequential driving are proposed and experimentally investigated. First and second methods utilize an intermittent sinusoidal waveform with phase shift of $90{\circ}\;and\;120^{\circ}$, respectively. Third method uses a rectangular waveform with phase shift of $90^{\circ}$. A controller with multi-phase shifter is designed and fabricated. Then, frequency and voltage-flow rate characteristics and load pressure-flow rate characteristics are experimentally investigated to verify the validity of the developed pump.
In current design practice, the thickness of the floor slab has been determined to satisfy requirement for deflection control. However, previous study shows that the floor thicknesses in residential buildings may not satisfy the floor vibration criteria, even though the thickness is determined by the serviceability requirements in current design provisons. Thus it is necessary to develop the procedure to determine slab thickness that satisfies the floor vibration criteria. This study attempts to propose slab thickness for flat plate slab systems that satisfies floor vibration criteria against occupant induced floor vibration(heel drop load). Two boundary conditions(simple and fixed support), three square flat plates(4, 6, 8m), and five concrete strength($18\~30$ MPa) are considered. Since there are large uncertainties in loading and material properties, probabilistic approach is adopted using Monte-Carlo simulation procedures.
A method for dynamic analysis and design calculation of a Powertrain Mounting System(PMS) including Hydraulic Engine Mounts(HEM) is developed with the aim of controlling powertrain motion and reducing low-frequency vibration in pitch and bounce modes. Here the pitch mode of the powertrain is defined as the mode rotating around the crankshaft of an engine for a transversely mounted powertrain. The powertrain is modeled as a rigid body connected to rigid ground by rubber mounts and/or HEMs. A mount is simplified as a three-dimensional spring with damping elements in its Local Coordinate System(LCS). The relation between force and displacement of each mount in its LCS is usually nonlinear and is simplified as piecewise linear in five ranges in this paper. An equation for estimating displacements of the powertrain center of gravity(C.G.) under static or quasi-static load is developed using Newton's second law, and an iterative algorithm is presented to calculate the displacements. Also an equation for analyzing the dynamic response of the powertrain under ground and engine shake excitations is derived using Newton's second law. Formulae for calculating reaction forces and displacements at each mount are presented. A generic PMS with four rubber mounts or two rubber mounts and two HEMs are used to validate the dynamic analysis and design calculation methods. Calculated displacements of the powertrain C.G. under static or quasi-static loads show that a powertrain motion can meet the displacement limits by properly selecting the stiffness and coordinates of the tuning points of each mount in its LCS using the calculation methods developed in this paper. Simulation results of the dynamic responses of a powertrain C.G. and the reaction forces at mounts demonstrate that resonance peaks can be reduced effectively with HEMs designed on the basis of the proposed methods.

In this paper, we propose a novel pc-based 8-channel USB interface digital multi-controller (DMC) has capacity to be able to adjust ultrasonic motor's (USM's) the parameters-frequency, amplitude, phase difference using FPGA. The proposed DMC can control parameters directly by digital logic through a FPGA. Since it has counter circuit for rotary encoder to measure position and velocity of USM, the other separate circuits are unnecessary. Therefore, it could reduce the size of controller and the production cost. Finally, to verify the performance of proposed DMC, we tested the speed characteristic of two types USM with no-load as adjusting the parameters.

Harmonic drives have been widely used in combination with joint torque sensors in order to facilitate accurate manipulator control. A harmonic drive causes a torque ripple because of its structural characteristics, and this torque ripple tends to deteriorate the performance of a controller or observer that uses torque sensors. This paper proposes a switching notch filter for reducing the torque ripple caused by a harmonic drive in a joint torque sensor; the functioning of this filter is based on the relationship between the frequency components of the torque ripple and the rotational velocity of the harmonic drive. The proposed switching notch filter is advantageous in that it requires less computational load and does not necessitate additional circuits or structures. Various experiments demonstrate that the proposed filter has good filtering performance, fast response, and good switching stability.
Analytical and experimental investigation on dynamic properties of extra lightweight concrete sandwich beams reinforced with various lay ups of carbon reinforced epoxy polymer composites (CFRP) are discussed. The lightweight concrete used in the core of the sandwich beams was made up of extra lightweight aggregate, Lica. The density of concrete was half of that of the ordinary concrete and its compressive strength was about $100Kg/cm^2$. Two extra lightweight unreinforced (control) beams and six extra lightweight sandwich beams with various lay ups of CFRP were clamped in one end and tested under an impact load. The dimension of the beams without considering any reinforcement was 20 cm ${\times}$ 10 cm ${\times}$ 1.4 m. These were selected to ensure that the effect of shear during the bending test would be minimized. Three other beams, made up of ordinary concrete reinforced with steel bars, were tested in the same conditions. For measuring the damping capacity of sandwich beams three methods, Logarithmic Decrement Analysis (LDA), Hilbert Transform Analysis (HTA) and Moving Block Analysis (MBA) were applied. The first two methods are in time domain and the last one is in frequency domain. A comparison between the damping capacity of the beams obtained from all three methods, shows that the damping capacity of the extra lightweight concrete decreases by adding the composite reinforced layers to the upper and lower sides of the beams, and becomes most similar to the damping of the ordinary beams. Also the results show that the stiffness of the extra lightweight concrete beams increases by adding the composite reinforced layer to their both sides and become similar to the ordinary beams.

This study aims to investigate the effects of the microstructures and nodule type on the fatigue characteristics of cast iron. Fatigue tests were carried out in tension-tension mode using a servo-hydraulic testing machine with load control mode operating at a frequency of 15 Hz. The tests were conducted at stress ratio R=Kmin/Kmax, of 0.1. Initial crack ${\Dalta}K$ values were highly performed with increase in tensile strength of DCI fatigue specimens. ${\Dalta}K_{th}$ region, fatigue crack propagation was primarily advanced through cell boundary and in periphery of near nodule. Fatigue crack propagation rate of D2 consisted with 2Phase(Ferrite+Pearlite) was slow due to crack closure enhanced by crack deflection and occurred crack branching. The generation of crack branch was occurred due to interaction of crack-nodule. At Threshold and Paris zone, the fractographs of the fatigue fracture surface for DCI show typical striations of a ductile fracture and isolated cleavage planes near graphite. The effect of microstructure on fatigue crack propagation of GC strongly depends on the type of flake. The generation of crack branch occurred due to interaction of crack-nodule. The fractographs of the fatigue fracture surface for GC show cleavage plane along the flake graphite.
The inerter-based vibration absorber (IVA) is an enhanced variation of Tuned Mass Damper (TMD). The parametric optimization of absorbers in the previous research mainly considered only two decision variables, namely frequency ratio and damping ratio, and aimed to minimize peak displacement and acceleration individually under the excitation of the across-wind load. This paper extends these efforts by minimizing two conflicting objectives simultaneously, i.e., the extreme displacement and acceleration at the top floor, under the constraint of the physical mass. Six decision variables are optimized by adopting a constrained multi-objective evolutionary algorithm (CMOEA), i.e., NSGA-II, under fluctuating across- and along-wind loads, respectively. After obtaining a set of optimal individuals, a decision-making approach is employed to select one solution which corresponds to a Tuned Mass Damper Inerter/Tuned Inerter Damper (TMDI/TID). The optimization procedure is applied to parametric optimization of TMDI/TID installed in a 340-meter-high building under wind loads. The case study indicates that the optimally-designed TID outperforms TMDI and TMD in terms of wind-induced vibration mitigation under different wind directions, and the better results are obtained by the CMOEA than those optimized by other formulae. The optimal TID is proven to be robust against variations in the mass and damping of the host structure, and mitigation effects on acceleration responses are observed to be better than displacement control under different wind directions.
