  • A clustering based wireless internet proxy server with cooperative caching has a problem of minimizing overall performance because some servers become overloaded if client request pattern is Hot-Spot or uneven. We propose a self-learning based adaptive clustering scheme to solve the poor performance problems of the existing clustering in case of Hot-Spot or uneven client request pattern. In the proposed scheme, requests are dynamically redistributed to the other servers if some servers supposed to handle the requests become overloaded. This is done by a self-learning based method based dynamic weight adjustment algorithm so that it can be applied to a situation with even various request pattern or a cluster of hosts with different performance. We performed experiments in a clustering environment with 16 PCs and a load balancer. Experimental results show the 54.62% performance improvement of the proposed schemes compared to the existing schemes.

  • In this paper, we are considering a heterogeneous processor system in which each processor may have different performance and reliability characteristics. In other to fully utilize this diversity of processing power it is advantageous to assign the program modules of a distributed program to the processors in such a way that the execution time of the entire program is minimized. This assignment of tasks to processors to maximize performance is commonly called load balancing, since the overloaded processors can perform their own processing with the performance degradation. For the task assignment problem, we propose a new objective function which formulates this imbalancing cost. Thus the task assignment problem is to be carried out so that each module is assigned to a processor whose capabilities are most appropriate for the module, and the total cost is minimized that sum of inter-processor communication cost and execution cost and imbalance cost of the assignment. To find optimal assignment is known to be NP-hard, and thus we proposed an efficient heuristic algorithm with time complexity $O(n^2m)$ in case of m task modules and n processors.

  • In order to increase the utilization of the computing resources, universities connect a variety of computing resources such as mainframes, workstations, and personal computers via LAN. However, due to management and security reasons, most administrative applications are concentrated on mainframes which is the main cause of large work overload on mainframes for such applications as on-line course registration system where the entire student body must have access to the system during a short period of time. In this study, using a university system as the model and choosing on-line course registration system as the targeted distributed computing. APPC through IBM SNALU 6.2 link is proposed as the most appropriate means of distributed computing for the environment of the model university. In addition, the on-line course registration system is redesigned as client-server model where a mainframe serves as the file server responsible for file input and output and workstations becomes the client. Actual implementation and experiments have shown that the proposed distributed computing system yields a significant reduction in processing time.

  • A most important thing in a connected dominating set(CDS)-based routing in a wireless ad-hoc network is to select a minimum number of dominating nodes and then build a backbone network which is made of them. Node failure in a CDS is an event of non-negligible probability. For applications where fault tolerance is critical, a traditional dominating-set based routing may not be a desirable form of clustering. It is necessary to minimize the frequency of reconstruction of a CDS to reduce message overhead due to message flooding. The idea is that by finding alternative nodes within a restricted range and locally reconstructing a CDS to include them, instead of totally reconstructing a new CDS. With the proposed algorithm, the resulting number of dominating nodes after partial reconstruction of CDS is not changed and also its execution time is faster than well-known algorithm of construction of CDS by 20~40%. In the case of high mobility situation, the proposed algorithm gives better results for the performance metrics, packet receive ratio and energy consumption.

  • Recently, studies of vibration control performance improvement of tall buildings connected by a sky-bridge have been conducted. In this study, the effect of difference of natural vibration periods of two buildings and install location of a sky-bridge on vibration control performance has been investigated. To this end, 40-story and 50-story building structures were selected as example structures. Analytical models were developed by varying the natural period difference ratio from 1.0 to 1.5. Artificial earthquake load based on KBC2009 was used as an excitation for time history analyses. Based on numerical simulation results, it has been shown that control performance for displacement and velocity of tall buildings connected by a sky-bridge is improved as the difference of natural periods of two buildings increases and the linked story becomes higher. However, in the case of acceleration response, it shows a counter trend compared to displacement and velocity responses.

  • It has been occurred many times that wireless sensor networks (WSNs) had congested areas because all the sensing data collected by multiple sensor nodes are delivered to one sink node. Typically, in order to control congested areas, it used to reduce the traffic by increasing the sensing period or discarding packets. However, those schemes have a disadvantage that it loses the reliability when delivering sensing data. Moreover, there are no schemes considering case of having poor quality of links between nodes in practical terms. In this paper, we suggest a scheme not to reduce the traffic but to distribute the traffic by changing routing paths depends on the traffic and the quality of links. Also, it can be seen that the reliability of delivering of the sensing data is improved with the experiments improving collection rates and shortening end-to-end delay.

  • When waves propagating over an underwater shoal break at the top of the shoal, wave heights are drastically decreased in the downstream breaking zone, but a secondary current shooting downstream with strong velocity can be induced by the breaking waves themselves. In the case that an offshore structure is placed in the breaking zone, the estimation of wave farce purely based on the visible wave height may cause an under-design of the structure. Thus, for the safe design of the structure, the breaking wave induced current should be necessarily considered in the comprehensive estimation of design load. In the present study, Boussinesq equation model to calculate the wave height distribution and breaking wave induced current was set up and applied to the scheme of a hydraulic model test previously undertaken. Based on the results of the Boussinesq model, fluid forces acting on the model structure were calculated and compared with the experimental results. The importance of the breaking wave induced current was quantitatively assessed by comparing fluid forces with or without current.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of load on root that was applied to edentulous area in three simulated situation, in each case the guiding planes of abutment were right vertical, 95 degrees, or 100 degrees to residual ridge. The 2-dimensional finite element method was used and the finite element model was prepared as fellows. Right mandibular 1st and 2nd molar was lost and the 2nd premolar with distal rest was used as primary abutment which had three different degrees of guiding plane. Then 150N of compressive force was applied to central fossae of the 1st and 2nd molars and von Mises stress and displacement was measured. The results were as follows; 1. Irrespective of slopes of guiding planes, the stress was concentrated on mesial side of root apex and distal side of coronal portion of root, in particular on junction with distal alveolar bone. As slopes of guiding planes were increased. stress on root and compact bone surrounding abutment was increased but no considerable effect was seen on compact bone of residual ridge. 2. Distal side of coronal portion of root limited by periodontal ligament was displaced distally and mesial side of apical portion was mesially. With slope of guiding plane increasing, the pattern of displacement was similar with one another but the quantity was increased. 3. Both abutment & alveolar bone were displaced downward and root of abutment, especially distal side of coronal portion, was displaced severely. As the guiding plane was tiffed more mesially over $90^{\circ}$, the degree of displacement was also increased.

  • The effect of aspect ratio (AR) on the aerodynamic characteristics of a flapping wing was examined to analyze the design parameters of an insect-based MAV. The experimental model constructed with 4-bar linkages was operated in a water tank with the condition of a low Reynolds number. A water-proof micro-force load cell was fabricated and installed at the root of the wing which is made of a plexiglas. The wing shapes were based on the planform of a fruit fly wing. The ARs selected were 1.87, 3.74 and 7.48 and the Reynolds number was fixed at $10^4$. For AR=1.87 and 3.74, distinct lift peaks which indicate unsteady effects such as 'wake-capture' were observed at the moment of the start of the wing-stroke. However, for AR=7.48, no unsteady effects were observed. These phenomena were also observed in the delayed rotation case. The results indicate that a larger AR provides better aerodynamic performance for the insect-based flapping wing which can be applied in MAV designs.

  • A scaled model test was performed to evaluate the stability of subway twin tunnels excavated in the sedimentary rocks with subhorizontal bedding planes. The size of studied tunnel was 6.2 m×6.8 m and pillar width was 4 m. The anisotropic model test specimen was manufactured with the modeling materials suitable for in-situ rocks by way of dimensional analysis. Fracture and deformation behaviors of tunnels according to applied loads were investigated through the biaxial compression test. As the load was increased on the model specimen, the first crack occurred in the middle part of the pillar across twin tunnels and the gradual fractures progressed at crown and floor of twin tunnels. All the cracks in pillar were generated along the existing bedding planes so that they were found to be the main cause of the pillar failure. In addition, the test results were verified by numerical analysis on the experimental conditions using FLAC ubiquitous joint model. The distribution of plastic regions obtained from numerical analysis were in general agreement with test results, confirming the reliability of the scaled model test conducted in this study.
