Behavior of Reinforced Dapped End Beams with T-headed Bar and Steel Fibers (헤디드 바와 강섬유로 보강된 Dapped End Beam의 구조 거동에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • In this studies, Dapped End Beams(DEB) having disturbed regions were designed by using strut tie model, and the main purpose of this paper is that whether T-headed bars and Steel fibers will be present or not. The ability of DEB with T-headed bars have a superior performance rather than others, such as improved ductility, larger energy adsorption and enhanced post-peak load carrying capability. The capacity of DEB with steel fibers also show increase of ductility, shear strength, fatigue strength and crack. Each DEB with both headed bars and steel fibers, headed bars, and steel fibers as a substitute reinforced steel in the disturbed regions and a DEB with only stirrup and tie reinforced steel were comparable. In contrast, the headed bar stirrups, the tie headed bars and the reinforced steel fibers did not lose their anchorage and hence were able to develop strain hardening and also served to delay buckling of the flexural compression steel. Excellent load-deflection predictions were obtained by increasing the tension stiffening effect to account for high load effects.

Structural performance of concrete containing fly ash based lightweight angular aggregates

  • The present investigation deals with the production of the innovative lightweight fly ash angular aggregates (FAA) first time in India using local class 'F' fly ash, its characterization, and exploring the potential for its utilization as alternative coarse aggregates in structural concrete applications. Two types of aggregates are manufactured using two different kinds of binders. The manufacturing process involves mixing fly ash, binder, and water, followed by the briquetting process, sintering and crushing them into suitable size aggregates. Tests are conducted on fly ash angular aggregates to measure their physical properties such as crushing value, impact value, specific gravity, water absorption, bulk density, and percentage of voids. Study shows that the physical parameters are significantly enhanced as compared to commercially available fly ash pellets (FAP). The developed FAA are used in concrete vis-à-vis conventional granite aggregates and FAP to determine their compressive, split tensile and flexural strengths. Although being lightweight, the strength parameters for concrete containing FAA are well compared with conventional concrete. This might be due to the high pozzolanic reaction between fly ash angular aggregates and cement paste. Also, RCC beams are cast and the load-deflection behaviour and ultimate load carrying capacity signify that FAA can be suitably used for RCC construction. Hence, the utilization of fly ash as angular aggregates can reduce the dead load of the structure and at the same time serves as a solution for fly ash disposal and mineral depletion problem.

  • In this research, we developed the muscle-strength-assistant device, named as LEXO-W, and conducted suitability test for army when transporting high weights. LEXO-W relieves the burden when carrying heavy weights by distributing the load concentrated on the arms throughout the body. LEXO-W weighs 4 kg and is designed to handle objects weighing up to 55 kg. To verify the effectiveness of the device, object handling tests (high explosive shell, simple assembly bridges, and ammunition boxes) were conducted. Working time, metabolic rate, and electromyogram (EMG) signals were measured in each test. As a result, it was confirmed that the working time, metabolic rate and EMG signal before and after wearing LEXO-W were decreased. This research has great significance in that it verified the performance of the wearable device from the perspective of military operation.

An investigation into the thermo-elasto-hydrodynamic effect of notched mechanical seals

  • A 3D thermo-elasto-hydrodynamic model is developed to analyze the sealing performance of a notched mechanical seal applied in the reactor coolant pump. In the model, the generalized Reynolds equation, the energy equation coupled with notch heat balance equation, the heat conduction equations, and the deformation equations of the sealing rings are iteratively solved by the finite element method. The film pressure and temperature distribution are obtained, and the deformation of the sealing rings is revealed to study the mechanism of the notched mechanical seals. A parameterized study is conducted to analyze the sealing performance under different operating conditions. As a comparison, the sealing performance of non-notched seals is also studied. The results show that the hydrostatic effect is dominant in the load-carrying capacity of the fluid film due to the radial mechanical and thermal deformations. The notch can cool the fluid film and influence the thermal deformation of seal rings. The sealing performance is sensitive to the pressure difference, ambient temperature, and rotational speed. It is suggested to set the notches on the softer sealing rings to acquire the greater hydrodynamic effect. Compared with the non-notched, the notched end face holds a better lubrication performance, especially under lower rotational speed.

  • Recently, interest on the performance of the construction temporary equipment have been greatly increased. Since the application of the 'Performance Test Code' for the equipment in 1992 according to the Industrial Safety and Health Act, a basic study of Steel Pipe Supports have been carried out for the last 2 years based on the Performance Test Results. The present code specification for the Steel Pipe Supports and research status are introduced. So far, total 849 specimen have been examined on their outer and inner pipe's length, thickness, their overlapping length, and their load carrying capacities. The test was conducted separately into two groups - used and new equipment, and it was found that the used ones revealed a decrease on their load carrying capacity, almost $10\%$ compared to the new ones. Considering this fact, it is strongly recommended to ensure the quality of the equipment before use at the jobsite. First of all, based on this basic investigation, the statistical values on the Steel Pipe Supports are suggested and further analysis on the effect of each component is in progress. It is, however, expected that this report can be used as a basic information on the Steel Pipe Supports.

Seismic Performance Evaluation of Medium-and Low-rise R/C Buildings Strengthened with RCSF External Connection Method by Pseudo Dynamic Test (유사동적실험에 의한 RCSF 외부접합공법으로 내진보강 된 중·저층 철근콘크리트 건물의 내진성능 평가)

  • In this study, a new RCSF (Reinforced Concrete Steel Frame) external connection method is proposed for seismic strengthening of medium-and low-rise reinforced concrete buildings. The RCSF method, proposed in this study, is capable of carrying out the seismic retrofitting construction while residents can live inside structures. The method is one of the strength design approach by retrofit which can easily increase the ultimate lateral load capacity of concrete buildings controlled by shear. The pseudo-dynamic test, designed using a existing school building in Korea, was carried out in order to verify the seismic strengthening effects of the proposed method in terms of the maximum load carrying capacity and ductility. Test results revealed that the proposed RCSF strengthening method installed in RC frame enhanced conspicuously the strength and displacement capacities, and the method can resist markedly under the large scaled earthquake intensity level.

Scale model experimental of a prestressed concrete wind turbine tower

  • As concrete wind-turbine towers are increasingly being used in wind-farm construction, there is a growing need to understand the behavior of concrete wind-turbine towers. In particular, experimental evaluations of concrete wind-turbine towers are necessary to demonstrate the dynamic characteristics and load-carrying capacity of such towers. This paper describes a model test of a prestressed concrete wind-turbine tower that examines the dynamic characteristics and load-carrying performance of the tower. Additionally, a numerical model is presented and used to verify the design approach. The test results indicate that the first natural frequency of the prestressed concrete wind turbine tower is 0.395 Hz which lies between frequencies 1P and 3P (0.25-0.51 Hz). The damper ratio is 3.3%. The maximum concrete compression stresses are less than the concrete design compression strength, the maximum tensile stresses are less than zero and the prestressed strand stresses are less than the design strength under both the serviceability and ultimate limit state loads. The maximum displacement of the tower top are 331 mm and 648 mm for the serviceability limit state and ultimate limit state, respectively, which is less than L/100 = 1000 mm. Compared with traditional tall wind-turbine steel towers, the prestressed concrete tower has better material damping properties, potential lower maintenance cost, and lower construction costs. Thus, the prestressed concrete wind-turbine tower could be an innovative engineering solution for multi-megawatt wind turbine towers, in particular those that are taller than 100 m.

  • This paper presents an experimental study on the flexural performance of concrete members strengthened with external steel plates for the purpose of improving seismic performance. In order to strengthen the structure, a strengthening method was applied that wraps the walls and columns with steel members. The partial section of the wall with the longest span in the structure was manufactured in real size and the strengthening effect was confirmed by performing a static load test. As a result of the experiment, it was confirmed that the strengthened section exhibited sufficient flexural performance satisfied to the seismic requirements, but the behavior until failure was not obtained because of actuator capacity. It was confirmed that the strengthened member resists the out-of-plane moment with a composite behavior. It was verified that the stiffness and load carrying capacity of the strengthened member were improved compared to the non-strengthened member by displacement and strain measurements.

Study on the possible application of Vibrated and Rolled reinforced concrete pipe to vertical.crossing water distribution system (진동 및 전압 철근 콘크리트관의 종.횡단배수관 적용성 검토에 관한 연구)

  • In case of carrying out vortical crossing water distribution system in expressways or general roads construction, VR(Vibrated and Rolled reinforced concrete) pipes are restricted because of their specification of reinforced spun concrete pipe or on-site made pipe. Therefore, in order to apply VR pipes to those constructions, through the structural behavior experiments of the pipes, VR pipes are compared and verified with reinforced spun concrete pipe and the results are obtained as the following. From the experiments and analyses of Pipe Stiffness(PS) of the pipes, cracking loading is approved to satisfy the KS regulations. Through a direct load test, the cracking loading strength and the maximum load test of VR pipe is larger compared with reinforced spun concrete pipe. Particularly, even if side weld is thin, there is no little change in the cracking strength of VR pipe. The results of the direct load test analysis show that the structural behavior of VR pipe is equivalent or higher compared with reinforced spun concrete pipe in performance and VR pipe could be used as the water distribution pipe for roads. In this study, through pipe stiffness, direct load test and load teat on earth, reinforced spun concrete pipe and VR pipe are compared. And as a result, the structural behavior of VR pipe is comprehensively excellent. From the structural behavior tests, VR pipe's section shows more thickness and has uniform characteristics so that VR pipe is considered more favorable than reinforced spun concrete pipe.
