The Proposal for Reliability Improvement of Emergency Diesel Engines through the Evaluation of the Maintenance Program and Overseas Cases for their Applications (정비프로그램 평가 및 해외사례 분석을 통한 비상디젤엔진의 신뢰성 향상방안)

  • The failure frequency of the Emergency Diesel Generator(EDG) at Nuclear Power Plants(NPPs) is not so much lower than that of the Marine engines, whereas the running hours of the diesel engine at NPPs is much less than those of the engines for commercial service. The primary factor results from the severe surveillance test requirements such as fast start, large number of starting test, fast load-run, high load running, etc. The other factor comes from the excessive maintenance based on the engine maker's instruction manual that did not incorporate the peculiar characteristics of the diesel engines at NPPs. In this paper, the present preventive maintenance program on the basis of the Pielstick diesel engines was reviewed for the purpose of securing the reliability of the emergency diesel generator at NPPs and the ways for its improvement were presented by referring to the overseas cases for their applications.

  • In this paper, a comparative study of modified phase-angle, extinction-angle, and pulse width modulation control techniques for the purpose of power factor improvement of single-phase AC-AC voltage regulators have been illustrated as applied to a single-phase ac voltage converter by an example of the widely used single-phase induction motor as a dynamic load. Observations on power factor, displacement factor and total harmonic distortion factor are described and discussed on the basis of the simulated and measured results of this work.

Power Compensator Control for Improving Unbalanced Power of AC Electric Railway (교류전기철도 불평형 전력 개선을 위한 전력보상장치 제어)

  • In this study, we propose a control algorithm to reduce the unbalanced characteristics of a three-phase system power caused by the unbalanced load of the AC electric railway. Then, we verify its performance through the design of a power compensator and experiments applying it. Like electric railway systems, a Scott transformer is applied, and the load and single-phase back-to-back converters are connected to the M-phase and T-phase outputs. The back-to-back converter monitors the difference in active power between the unbalanced loads in real-time and compensates for the power by using bidirectional characteristics. The active power is performed through PI control in the synchronous coordinate system, and DC link overall voltage and voltage balancing control are controlled jointly by M-phase and T-phase converters to improve the responsiveness of the system. To verify the performance of the proposed power compensation device, an experiment was performed under the condition that M-phase 5 kW and T-phase 1 kW unbalanced load. As a result of the experiment, the unbalance rate of the three-phase current after the operation of the power compensator decreases by 58.66% from 65.04% to 6.38%, and the excellent performance of the power compensator proposed in this study is verified.

  • Because of the high cost for the active power filter, passive filters have been widly used to eliminate harmonic currents of nonlinear load and can also improve the power factor. They are not often optimal filters because the passive filters are designed under the fixed load conditions. In this paper we proposed the method which only the necessary harmonic filters are operated by detecting the various harmonic current components. We presents the new control method of passive filter selection type with the relay control circuit which is consist of analog GIC, comparater, flip-flop and etc. By the experimental results using the proposed system for the rectifier load, we concluded that the researched method is cost effective and the performance is better than the passive filter.

  • The structure of railroad or subway is that low fare transportation system of the large traffic volume. Like this structure is subjected to the cyclic load of moving vehicle. Consequently the result of the settlement analysis or plastic deformation prediction of railroad bed could be used as an important factor in safety of the railroad. The results of cyclic triaxial test were used in the numerical analysis of power model which Li and Selig(1994) developed. The soil samples were obtained from the construction site of railroad. Cyclic triaxial test was conducted with the variation of the magnitude of cyclic load and soil types. The large magnitude of plastic deformation in the railroad bed is caused of structure failure of the railroad.

  • Demand for electricity is increasing annually. Especially, the daytime demand grawth shows higher than any other time period. So the big difference between maximum and minimum electrical demand becomes another important problem to be solved. The Battery Energy Storage System is chosen as one of the solutions among the sevral methods. The purpose of utilization of Battery Energy Storage System is to improve the daily load factor. Also, Battery Energy Storage System may be used for the load levelling or the load shifting as well as the spinning reserve. Up to now, only the pumped hydro power plant system has been operated on the commercial basis, but this system has so many constraints such as site, environmental effects, construction period, ect. Being considered current electrical power situation the development of electric storage system is in need latly. Among the various electric storage systems, Battery Energy System is chosen with the top priority because it has sevral merits to cover such as the short construction period, the demand site installation, and the food environmental characteristics.

  • The forming and design method of single power factor meter is suggested and the sensitive phase angle detect circuit of current and voltage of load was dealt with. In this paper, in order to control and detect of phase angle of the current and voltage, operational amplifier comparator circuit and R-C phase shift circuit was used, and to detect the controlled voltage wave form, the transister chopper pair circuit was used. The test result of this power factor meter was good and reliable at the full range of power factor.

  • In this paper an estimation method is proposed to find reasonable load factor of the power system based on the conventional generation mix concept. To find the factor investment costs and operation costs are considered in the estimation. To use feasible results both supply side and demand side of views should be considered. But as a first step of this study only the generation mix is considered in this study.

  • A new measure, the distributed generation impact factor (DGIF), is used for evaluating the impact of newly introduced distributed generators on a networked distribution or a transmission system. Distribution systems are normally operated in a radial structure. But the introduction of distributed generation needs load flow calculation to analyze the networked system. In the developed framework, the potential share of every generation bus in each line flow of a networked system can be directly evaluated. The developed index does not require the solution of power flow equations to evaluate the effect of the distributed generation. The main advantage of the developed method lies in its capability of considering simultaneous outputs of multiple generation sites.

A Study on Failure Analysis of Low Pressure Turbine Blade Subject to Fatigue Load (피로하중을 받은 저압 터빈 블레이드의 파손해석에 관한 연구)

  • Turbine blade is subject to force of three types ; the torsional force by torsional mount, the centrifugal force by the rotation of rotor and the cyclic bending force by steam pressure. The cyclic bending force was a main factor on fatigue strength. SEM fractography in root of turbine blade showed micro-clack width was not dependent on stress intensity factor range. Especially, fatigue did not exist on SEM photograph in root of turbine blade. To clear out the fracture mechanism of turbine blade, nanofractography was needed on 3-dimensional crack initiation and crack growth with high magnification. Fatigue striation partially existed on AFM photograph in root of turbine blade. Therefore, to find a fracture mechanism of the torsion-mounted blade in nuclear power plant, the relation between stress intensity factor range and surface roughness measured by AFM was estimated, and then the load amplitude ΔP applied to turbine blade was predicted exactly by root mean square roughness.
