  • Non-stationary extreme winds such as thunderstorm downbursts are responsible for many structural damages. This research presents a time domain approach for estimating along-wind load effects on tall buildings using multiple wind speed time history samples, which are simulated from evolutionary power spectra density (EPSD) functions of non-stationary wind fluctuations using the method developed by the authors' earlier research. The influence of transient wind loads on various responses including time-varying mean, root-mean-square value and peak factor is also studied. Furthermore, a simplified model is proposed to describe the non-stationary wind fluctuation as a uniformly modulated process with a modulation function following the time-varying mean. Finally, the probabilistic extreme response and peak factor are quantified based on the up-crossing theory of non-stationary process. As compared to the time domain response analysis using limited samples of wind record, usually one sample, the analysis using multiple samples presented in this study will provide more statistical information of responses. The time domain simulation also facilitates consideration of nonlinearities of structural and wind load characteristics over previous frequency domain analysis.

  • This paper presents a simple carrier symmetric method for the voltage balance of flying capacitors in FCMLI(flying capacitor multi-level inverter). To achieve the voltage balance of flying capacitors, the utilization of each carrier must be balanced during a half-cycle of the switching period such as PSPWM(Phase-Shifted PWM). However, the CRPWM(Carrier Redistribution PWM) method causes the fluctuation of flying capacitor voltages because the balanced utilization of carriers is not achieved. Moreover, it does not consider that the load current change has an influence on flying capacitor voltages by assuming that the current flows into the load. To overcome the drawbacks of CRPWM, it is modified by the technique that carriers of each band are disposed symmetrically at every fundamental period. Firstly, the CRPWM method is reviewed and the theory on voltage balance of flying capacitors is analyzed. The proposed method is introduced and is verified through the experiment result.

  • This paper proposes a modeling and controller design approach for a wind-diesel hybrid system including dump load. Wind turbine depends on nature such as wind speed. It causes power fluctuations of wind turbine. Excessive power fluctuation at stand-alone power grid is even worse than large-scale power grid. The proposed control scheme for power quality is fuzzy PI controller. This controller has advantages of PI and fuzzy controller. The proposed model is carried out by using Matlab/Simulink simulation program. In the simulation study, the proposed controller is compared with a conventional PI controller. Simulation results show that the proposed controller is more effective against disturbances caused by wind speed and load variation than the PI controller, and thus it contributes to a better quality wind-diesel hybrid power system.

  • The APAM's quantitative effectiveness and comparative study in preventing and treating pressure ulcer has not been sufficiently evaluated mainly because of uncertainty of pressure load input and lack of interpretation of dynamic perfusion recovery characteristics of soft tissue. The purpose of this paper was to quantify and analyze the alternating pressure characteristics of APAM as a preventive measure for pressure ulcers. To quantify the alternating load to human body, we introduced alternating pressure profile concept and developed parametric model of the profile. Regarding pressure level and cycle time, 3 global and 7 local periodic parameters were used to define the profile such as light, standard, typical and heavy duty profile shape. Pressure impulse ratio of light duty is the lowest but pressure fluctuation is significantly high. For the same duty shape, contact conditions are changed with alternating cycle time and more dramatically in shorter alternating cycle time conditions. We can conclude that if we use shorter alternating cycle time on APAM's operation we can get more positive effects regarding to inflated contact time condition. We proposed the quantitative methods on tissue viability study of external loading by simultaneous measurement of interface pressure and tissue perfusion with proper alternating pressure profile conditions.

  • In vector control technique, stator currents of an induction motor are transformed to equivalent d-q currents in a reference frame consist of d and q axis, each of which is coincide with flux and torque direction respectively. Since the current in q-axis is related to the torque in a synchronously rotating frame, torque is estimated as a function of q-axis current and flux. In this paper, a method to estimate torque of an induction motor based on the measurement of 3-phase currents and rotating velocity of a rotor is presented. Graphic-programming is used to measure signals, to estimate the torque and to show the result in the form of user friendly graph in window environment. To stabilize the fluctuation of estimated torque caused from the small measurement error of the rotor velocity, the stator current is reconstructed in a program based on measured signals. The experimental results executed under the velocity of 500 rpm, 1500 rpm without load and 1500 rpm with load show that the proposed method estimates the torque very well.

  • To study the influence of changes in river discharge on water quality of the main stem of the Geum River, we investigated variation of inflow load from tributaries with river discharge. We also studied the mixing behavior of pollutants during mixing of waters of the main stem and Gap Stream. For this study, we collected water quality data such as suspended solids (SS), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) representing pre-monsoon, monsoon, and post-monsoon events of 2013 from a website of Water Information System. Based on inflow load, the Gap and Miho streams may be ones of tributaries which may largely influence water quality of main stem in upper river region. The Suksung and Nonsan Streams seemed to further affect water quality downstream. Results of modified EMMA indicated SS and TP may have another source(besides Gap Stream) at pre-monsoon, monsoon, and post-monsoon period. In contrast, TN and organic matter (BOD, COD, TOC) were conservative at pre-monsoon and post-monsoon. However, when river discharge increased, these pollutants may also came from unspecified non-point sources. Therefore, we need to attempt to find non-point sources for the pollutants in the main channel of upper Geum River region.

  • In terms of women engaged in clerical job. working time of the workers who mainly keep standing with their high-heeled shoes on has been increasing. According]y. they are exposed to many kinds of foot deformation caused by loads of lower back and lower extremities due to high-heeled shoes. The type of heels they usually wear are diverse though the hight is same. In this study. we investigated most women's favorite styles of shoes concerned with heights. types and contact areas of the heels. Hence. we designed three kinds of shoes for an experiment: their contact areas with ground are 1 cm2. 2-4 cm2 and over 9 cm2 according to the heel heights. respectively. To investigate the biomechanical effects. analysis of motion and EMG were applied to the experiments. In addition. foot pressure distribution was measured for more detailed analysis. Six healthy young women were participated in this experiments. The result showed the heel becoming higher and narrower increased not only fluctuation of CBM(Center of Body Mass). but also the load of low back muscle and lower extremities. Accordingly. there was significant difference among types of the heel in terms of the role supporting load of the body. though the height is same. Especially. the difference among the pressures on a foot was most significant. In conclusion. we verified biomechanical effects are related with the contact area of a heel with ground as well as the hight.

  • Gear tooth micro-geometry modifications include the intentional removal of material from the gear teeth flanks, so that the shape is no longer a perfect involute. If the gear shapes are perfect, then the gear tooth meshing is better, therefore the gears will transmit input torque in a more efficient manner without the generation of high frequency engine fluctuation noise. In this paper, we study tooth micro-geometry optimization of rear gear set in 2 speed planetary gear reducers. Analysis revealed problems which are need of modification. Based on the results, tooth micro-geometry was used to deal with load distributions on the rear gear set.

  • As part of the "Carbon free Island 2030" policy, the local government of Jeju Island is currently working to reduce carbon through renewable energy supply. However, renewable energy is difficult to predict due to intermittent characteristics. If the share of renewable energy increase, it is difficult to plan of supply of electricity to grid due to that characteristic of renewable. In this paper analyze the fluctuation rate and the capacity credit of wind power and PV to find out how much wind power and PV contribute to supply of electricity of power system in Jeju. As a result mean value of variation rate of wind power and PV is about 3%, 5% and capacity credit is about 10% and 2% respectively.
