  • This research examines the eccentric compression performance of composite columns composed of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC)-filled square steel tube and profile steel. A total of 17 specimens on the composite columns with different recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) replacement percentage, RAC strength, width to thickness ratio of square steel tube, profile steel ratio, eccentricity and slenderness ratio were subjected to eccentric compression tests. The failure process and characteristic of specimens under eccentric compression loading were observed in detail. The load-lateral deflection curves, load-train curves and strain distribution on the cross section of the composite columns were also obtained and described on the basis of test data. Results corroborate that the failure characteristics and modes of the specimens with different design parameters were basically similar under eccentric compression loads. The compression side of square steel tube yields first, followed by the compression side of profile steel. Finally, the RAC in the columns was crushed and the apparent local bulging of square steel tube was also observed, which meant that the composite column was damaged and failed. The composite columns under eccentric compression loading suffered from typical bending failure. Moreover, the eccentric bearing capacity and deformation of the specimens decreased as the RCA replacement percentage and width to thickness ratio of square steel tube increased, respectively. Slenderness ratio and eccentricity had a significantly adverse effect on the eccentric compression performance of composite columns. But overall, the composite columns generally had high-bearing capacity and good deformation. Meanwhile, the mechanism of the composite columns under eccentric compression loads was also analysed in detail, and the calculation formulas on the eccentric compression capacity of composite columns were proposed via the limit equilibrium analysis method. The calculation results of the eccentric compression capacity of columns are consistent with the test results, which verify the validity of the formulas, and the conclusions can serve as references for the engineering application of this kind of composite columns.

  • In the precedent study, the retractable-roof spatial structure was selected as the analytical model and a tuned mass damper (TMD) was installed to control the dynamic response for the earthquake loads. Also, it is analyzed that the installation location of TMD in the analytical model and the optimal number of installations. A single TMD mass installed in the analytical model was set up 1% of the mass of the whole structure, and the optimum installation location was derived according to the number of change. As a result, it was verified that most effective to install eight TMDs regardless of opening or closing. Thus, in this study, eight TMDs were installed in the retractable-roof spatial structure and the optimum mass ratio was inquired while reducing a single TMD. In addition, the optimum mass distribution ratio was identified by redistributing the TMD masses differently depending on the installation position, using the mass ratio of vibration control being the most effective for seismic load. From the analysis results, as it is possible to confirm the optimum mass distribution ratio according to the optimum mass ratio and installation location of the TMD in the the retractable-roof spatial structure, it can be used as a reference in the TMD design for large space structure.

  • The main purpose of Set-up control of hot strip mill plant is to obtain the most regular thickness. Then the learning or adaptive computer control in hot strip rolling mill has been developed. But it is very difficult to keep the inter-stands load distribution ratio uniform; so that the deviation of strip flatness is not avoidable. This leads to the degradation of quality of the products. In this report, an improved method base on the steepest descent method including the computation of optimum step size. This method is applied to the off-line simulation. In consequence, the better balances of inter-stands load distribution is achieved in addition to improvements of output thickness of hot strip mill in POSCO.

  • This paper presents a method of the voltage-reactive power control in the long and short range operations and introduces a conception, "optimum control pattern." The optimum control pattern, aiming at the over-all system control, is defined as the optimum voltage distribution which minimizes the system operating cost under the conditions that the specified power be supplied and the system voltage be kept within the specified bounds. The following procedure was adopted to obtain this optimum pattern. In the first place, a power system was divided into three blocks, namely, load, substation and generator. Lagrange's, multiplier method is applied to each block in turn, paying attention only at the operating voltage distribution. Phase angles at each bus are then modified so that the continuity of active power is maintained. This procedure may be called "block relaxation method with Lagrange's multipliers." In a long range operation, this control pattern determines the optimum installation capacity of reactive power sources. In a short range operation, it also gives the reference state of real time control and the optimum switching capacity of reactive power souces. The real time control problem is also studied from the standpoint of cooperation of control devices such as generators, shunt capacitors, shunt reactors and ratio load controllers. A proposal for the real time control will contribute to the automation of power system operation in the near future. in the near future.

  • A composite piston with a crown made of steel and a skirt made of NCI is used in a marine diesel engine, which has a maximum firing pressure of over 180 bar and a high thermal load. In the fatigue design of the composite piston, the fatigue is influenced by factors such as the load type, surface roughness, and temperature; further, the distribution ratio of the firing force from the crown to the skirt is important for optimizing the design of the crown and skirt. In this study, the stress gradient method was used to consider the effect of the load type. The temperature field on the piston was predicted by cocktail-shaking cooling analysis, and influence of high temperature on fatigue strength was investigated. The load transfer ratio and contact pressure were optimized by design of the surface shape and accurate tolerance analysis. Finally, the cooling performance and durability design of the composite piston were verified by performing a long-term prototype test.

  • In this study, mix proportioning of porous concrete with compressive strength and porosity exceeding 3MPa and 30%, respectively, was examined and then load capacity and flexural toughness of the porous concrete block were evaluated according to the different arrangements of the GFRP bars. To achieve the designed requirements of porous concrete, it can be recommended that water-to-cement ratio and cement-to-coarse aggregate ratio are 25% and 20%, respectively, under the aggregate particle distribution of 15~20mm. The failure mode of porous concrete blocks reinforced with GFRP bars was governed by shear cracks. As a result, very few flexural resistance of the GFRP was expected. However, the enhanced shear strength of porous concrete due to the dowel action of the GFRP bars increased the load capacity and toughness of the blocks. The porous concrete blocks reinforced with one GFRP bar at each compressive and tensile regions had 2.1 times higher load capacity than the companion non-reinforced block and exhibited a high ductile behavior with the ultimate toughness index ($I_{30}$) of 43.4.

  • A ditch is a facility for managing washed-off runoff from parking lot area. Washed-off runoff inflows into ditches where it is retained for a short period of time. At this point, it is assumed that a ditch is a preliminary unit for runoff treatment. This research carries out the distribution of particle size and chemical compound for sediment in parking lot ditch. This work is important to understand the amount of generated sediment from this area to be able to determine different particle size ranges for treatment. Metal concentrations for sediment according to particle size are analyzed. From the distribution of particle size, the weight ratio with the range of $425-850{\mu}m$ is the highest. Considering its weight ratio, the metal concentration of coarser particles is high, otherwise metal concentration increases as particle size decreases. Metal load of the range is higher and the ratio of total metal load in the case of Cu, Pb, Zn is nearly 30%. Moreover metal concentration associated with particle size depends on particle ratio. To manage non-point source pollution for parking lot area, these results can be used with this ditch unit.

  • In order to improve the deformation capacity of the high-strength concrete shear wall, five high-strength concrete shear wall specimens confined with high-strength rectangular spiral reinforcement (HRSR) possessing different parameters, were designed in this paper. One specimen was only adopted high-strength rectangular spiral hoops in embedded columns, the rest of the four specimens were used high-strength rectangular spiral hoops in embedded columns, and high-strength spiral horizontal distribution reinforcement were used in the wall body. Pseudo-static test were carried out on high-strength concrete shear wall specimens confined with HRSR, to study the influence of the factors of longitudinal reinforcement ratio, hoop reinforcement form and the spiral stirrups outer the wall on the failure modes, failure mechanism, ductility, hysteresis characteristics, stiffness degradation and energy dissipation capacity of the shear wall. Results showed that using HRSR as hoops and transverse reinforcements could restrain concrete, slow load carrying capacity degeneration, improve the load carrying capacity and ductility of shear walls; under the vertical force, seismic performance of the RC shear wall with high axial compression ratio can be significantly improved through plastic hinge area or the whole body of the shear wall equipped with outer HRSR.

  • The Reynolds equation, incorporating Elrods cavitation algorithm, is discretized on a rectangular grid in computational space through coordinate mapping in order to accurately analyze a herringbone grooved journal bearing of a spindle motor in a computer hard disk drive. The pressure distribution and cavitation area are determined by using the finite volume method. Predicted results are compared to experimental data of previous researchers. It was found that positive pressure is developed within the converging section of the bearing and that a cavity occurs in the diverging section. Cavitation has been neglected in the previous analysis of the herringbone grooved bearing. Load capacity and bearing torque are increased due to the increased of eccentricity and L/D and the decrease of the grooved width ratio. The maximum load capacity was found to occur at a groove angle of 30 degrees while bearing torque remains constant due to the variation of the groove angle. The cavitation region is significantly decreased with the inclusion of herringbone grooves. However, the region increases with the increase of the eccentricity, L/D, groove angle and the rotational speed and the decrease of the grooved width ratio.
