  • In this paper, I have attempted to show how the environmental controversy surrounding the Saemangeurn Reclamation Project in Korea has been framed as narrow scientific debates. First of all, science, or specifically the Expert Review Pane, has played dual roles in the controversy. On the one hand, it has contributed to illuminating the future environmental impacts of reclamation, by so doing, to providing a momentum to reconsider the project. This has significant meaning that environmental concerns successfully checked the symbolic national project of developmental era through adopting a joint-investigation scheme that guaranteed participation of environmental groups on an equal footing with the government. On the other hand, by limiting the scope and participants of discussion, it fundamentally blocked the possibilities of public debates and deliberative decision-making with full considerations of the political, social, and cultural aspects of the controversy. I have shown that this is due to the realist belief shared by both the developers and the environmentalists in Korea that 'proper' science would disclose the truth. Environmental groups, in particular, were naive in evaluating the role of scientific expertise in the controversy and neglected the political role of the Expert Review Pane as a ritual. In opposition to the realist argument, I have shown through the analysis of the water quality debates concerning the future fresh water lakes that scientific 'facts' were not discovered but constructed through complex negotiations, conflicts, and compromises among related actors. The framing of the controversy as an experts' debate has resulted in the exclusion of an important actor from the discussion. Little attention has been paid throughout the controversy to the very people who have lived in the Saemangeum area for generations and will lose their livelihood all together soon. About 20,000 fishermen are living on the Saemangeum tidal flats.

  • We measured volume of daily urinary excretion. daily excretion of $Na^+$ and $K^+$, creatinine clearance, blood $Na^+$ and $K^+$ concentration on 34 subjects(12 men. 21 wenen) who live in Hanlim sub-county. Kimhae county. Kyongnam, Korea in December 1990. The data were compared to the data in 9 urban residents(4 men, 5 wemen). Results were as follows. I) Daily mean urinary $Na^+$ excretion of rural residents was $255{\pm}95.6$mEq/day. It is much lower than that of in 1960 but higher than that of students living in urban area(1975) or that of occidentals. 2) Daily mean urinary $K^+$ excretion of rural residents was $45{\pm}15.1$mEq/day. 3) $K^+$ excretion of rural residents was similar to that of urban residents but because of the relatively high $Na^+$ excretion, $K^+/Na^+$ ratio was significantly lower than that of urban residents. In conclusion. salt intake and excretion of rural residents tends to have been decreased progressively and it is thought to be the result of the improvement in dietary life especially increased intake of animal protein.

  • Fast foods are very popular to adolescent and the sales are increasing due to the convenience, low price, and a broad scale advertisement through mass media. Fast foods are often named as junk foods because of high calorie and fat, low vitamins and minerals contents. This study investigated the intake frequency of hamburger, pizza and fried chicken, the 3 representative fast foods, in 306 male and female high school students living in Daejeon. Data were collected by food frequency questionnaire, and analyzed by SPSS(ver. 18.0). Intake frequency of hamburger, pizza and fried chicken were 33, 29, 17 times per year, respectively. Intake frequency of these 3 fast foods were not sig. different by BMI obesity, breakfast and supper meal frequency, and first time of fast foods intake. But intake frequency of fast foods were different by the allowance, intake frequence of pizza and fried chicken are higher in students with higher allowance. Restrain score of fast foods intake were higher in underweight and obese than normal weight students. There were no sig. difference of intake restrain score by preferable future body figure. As conclusion, the most effective way of reducing the fast food intake frequency in adolescent were cutting down the allowance. Besides that education based on analysis about what are the specific nutritional defects in each fast food may help to change the behavior of fast foods intake.

  • The purpose of this paper was to explore the teaching materials in the Korean and Japanese high school Home Economics textbooks from the perspective of green life education. Although sustainable living at home has been emphasized as one of the main issues of Home Economics since the first curriculum period, green growth education has reinforced in the 2009 revised curriculum. The content analyses had been done to explore the teaching materials of five areas in the 6 Korean and 4 Japanese high school Home Economics textbooks through two checking steps. The material form of table-figure-pictures was the most frequently shown in both Korean and Japanese textbooks. Green life-teaching materials were more likely in the area of household management/consumer activity than in any other ones. All textbooks of both countries have included the green life-teaching materials according to the elements of contents mentioned in the curricula. The quantity and contents of the materials were some what differ by textbooks, so home economics teacher need to cross check the all textbooks to select useful information although the textbooks have included various types of green materials over the 5 areas. Home Economics curriculum need to actively and concretely include the green growth educational elements suggested by the previous study.

  • The purpose of this paper was to explore the materials in the Korean and Japanese Home Economics textbooks in middle school with the perspective of green life education. Home Economics is one of the relevant subjects to green growth education. Therefore, home economics teachers need to teach green life based on the low $CO_2$-green growth in the class. Sustainable living at home has been emphasized as one of the main importance of Home Economics since the first curriculum period. However, it is required to reinforce in the 2009 revised curriculum. The content analyses had been done to explore the materials of five areas in the 8 Korean and 2 Japanese junior highschool Home Economics textbooks through two checking steps. Each subject area of Home Economics had various form of materials such as terminology, table figure pictures, reading, and activity, related to green life related to environmental, economic, and social sustenance. The forms and the quantity of materials were some what differ by subject areas as well as textbooks. The levels of material contents were ranged from the knowledge, recognition, to intention to practicum of green life. The green life materials were more likely practical in Japanese textbooks rather than Korean ones. It is recommended teachers to choose the valuable materials over the textbooks and practical green life should clearly mentioned in home economics curriculum to be showed in textbooks.

  • This study investigated the anthropometric and biochemical indices, and the health and nutritional factors influencing the two indices among 194 middle-aged and elderly subjects (108 middle-aged and 86 elderly) residing in a medium sized city for more than 10 years. In the examination of their dietary habits, 8.3% of the middle-aged subjects and 14.0% of the elderly subjects had two meals a day, and more female subjects had two meals per day. Of the subjects who ate meals at regular times, 75.0% were middle-aged and 79.1% were elderly, and the degree of irregularity of meals was greater for female subjects. The study of the dietary behavior of the subjects indicated that 71.3% and 66.3% of the middle-aged and elderly, respectively responded that the amount of food in each meal was sufficient. The subjects ate alone comprised 19.7% of the middle-aged females and 31.5% of the elderly females. The prevalence of smoking among the subjects was 28.1% for the middle-aged, 18.8% for the elderly male and 7.4% for the elderly females. The percentage of the subjects who drank alcohol was 34.4% of the middle-aged males and 13.2% of the middle-aged females. Slightly less than half of the subjects exercised more than once a week, with the male subjects showing a higher rate than the female subjects. The average body mass indices (BMI) were 24.5 and 24.6 for the middle-aged male and female, respectively, and 22.6 and 24.0 for the elderly male and female, respectively. BMI assessment showed that underweight subjects (BMI < 20) comprised 3.7% of the middle-aged, 14.0% of the elderly, and that 40.7% of the middle-aged and 24.4% of the elderly were overweight (25 < BMI < 30) , and 0.9% of the middle-aged and 1.2% of the elderly were classified as obese (BMI $\geq$ 30) . A waist/hip ratio (WHR) greater than 0.8 was found in 89.5% of the middle-aged females and 90.7% of the elderly females, showing high abdominal fat deposition in the majority of females. The average systolic blood pressure of females was 121.1 $\pm$ 17.1 mmHg for the middle-aged and 129.6 $\pm$ 21.3 mmHg for the elderly subjects. The systolic blood pressures showed a significantly difference between the two age groups. Those defined as anemic subjects based on hemoglobin values comprised 13.0% of the middled-aged group and 16.3% of the elderly group. There was a tendency for higher fasting glucose levels among the elderly subjects. An increase in total plasma cholesterol levels with age was shown. The female subjects had higher cholesterol levels than the males'The study of the correlation between the daily habits and health status showed that the amount of food eaten at each meal, the frequency of eating out, and the use of dietary supplements appeared to influence BMI, WHR, the plasma triglyceride and plasma cholesterol levels; omitting one meal had a positive correlation with the systolic blood pressure and plasma cholesterol. These results suggest that desirable dietary habits and concerns for health are contributing factors for maintaining good health, as indicated by normal blood lipid levels.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the ity, food habits and eating behavior of the college students. The responses of 1,112 students(male 468, female 644) to the questionnaire were analyzed. The results were summarized as follows: The means of height, weight were $174.1{\pm}5.1cm$, $66.0{\pm}8.1kg$ for males, respectively and were $164.3{\pm}6.0cm$, $50.7{\pm}5.3kg$ for female, respectively. The means of relative body weight(RBW) were $99.1{\pm}11.6$ for males and $91.2{\pm}10.3$ for females. Body mass index(BMI) were $21.8{\pm}2.5$ for males and $19.3{\pm}2.0$ for females. The rate of underweight, normal and obese on the basis of BMI was 19.9%, 71.5%, 8.6% for males, respectively and 68.4%, 30.4%, 1.3% for females respectively. Among underweight subjects, 59.3% answered that they had normal weight. 37.5% of normal weight subjects regarded themselves more obese or less obese than their actual body shape. Food habit score(out of a possible 50 points) was 29.4 in male and 29.3 in female, the score of self boarding students was the lowest among groups. Self boarding students had lower scores than the home-living students on the regularity of meals, eating time, protein intake, vegetable intake, lipid intake and food balance. The average meal frequency of the students was 2.46 times a day. Breakfast was skipped most frequently. Self-boarding students missed breakfast more often than other groups. The main reason of skipping breakfast was due to lack of time. The type of favorite snack was cookies and ramyun and in terms of snack time, most of the students had snack between lunch and dinner or after dinner. The rates of smoking and alcohol drinking were 29.8%, 76.7%, respectively and 25% of subjects exercised regularly. The results of this study suggest that a comprehensive nutrition education program is needed for college student to improve their eating habits about skipping meal and to maintain their health.
