  • A random study of 574 dairy farms in Gyeongnam area was designed to determine 1) management factors that may be associated with the occurrence of drug residues; 2) the dairy farmer's attitudes and knowledge about residues; 3) how these variables influence the occurrence of residues in dairy cattle. Management factors perceived as having the greatest influence on drug residues in milk were insufficient knowledge about withdrawal periods, errors due to hired help, insufficient identification and record of animals treated for mastitis, dry cow treatment for mastitis, and metritis treatment. Seventy-one percent of farms with residues problem used mixed own feeds compared with twenty-nine percent of farms with premedicated feeds. Factors significantly associated with the occurrence of residues were herd size, increased number of hired persons, increased frequency of use of mixed-own feeds, category of medicated feed, and producer's attitude toward the public health significance of residues. Our findings suggest that residue occurrence was mainly associated with errors due to hired help, insufficient knowledge about withdrawal periods, poor animal identification and records of treatment animals and use of medicated feeds. Any residue avodiance educational program needs to stress how to deal with these factors. This educational program should be directed to dairy farmers and employees, especially temporary employees. In addition, Dairy farmer's attitudes and knowledge about drug residues need to be improved. More evidence on the public healths significance of residues should be available to them. Because belife in importance of public healths concerns was related to successful residue avidance and because 81.3% of the dairy farmers with residue problem thought public healths concerns were less important than economic ones, it would be helpful to provide educational programs specifically directed to this issue. it may be useful to provide programs not only for the dairy farmers but also change of their concerns about on the public healths.

  • Tandem HPLC and atmospheric pressure chemical ionization(APcI) LC/MS method was used for the determination and confirmation of carbendazim residues in soybean sprout. Fluorescence(FL) detector was connected in tandem with the ultraviolet(UV) detector for dual detection of the carbendazim residue at the excitation and emission wavelength of 280 nm and 310 nm, respectively. The limit of detection for carbendazim was $0.1{\mu}g/kg$ sample. Recoveries of carbendazim from fortified soybean sprout at 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 ppm were averaged 89.1%. Mass spectrometry using a APcI source confirmed the carbendazim residue in the soybean sprout sample. Fragmentation pattern on the APcI LC/MS spectrum of carbendazim was simpler than that from electron impact(EI) mass spectrum. Carbendazim produced 3 major ions including m/z 133, m/z 159 and m/z 191($M^{+}$). This method was sensitive enough to provide reliable and reproducible results for practical applications.

  • Harmful gases which are generated from various rout at growth environment of livestock ban have a direct and indirect bad influence to the livestock and farmers, and also step-up breeding density and long-term exposure to the sealed environment of winter can be fatal. In this paper, we propose a gas measurement system for monitoring gases of ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, volatile organic compounds, etc. which arise from the muck. The measurement system consist of both wireless gas sensor node and gas recognition software using a Fuzzy Min-Max neural network. To evaluate the performance of suggested system, gas measurement experiments are performed in laboratory environment by using the designed wireless gas sensor node. And we show the performance through classification test for the target gases by the designed gas recognition software.

  • Characteristics of organic matters (OM) in wastewater and the removal efficiencies were investigated using the influent and the effluent samples collected from 21 wastewater treatment plants. The OM characteristics investigated included biodegradability, humic content, specific UV absorbance (SUVA), the distribution percentage of refractory OM (R-OM), and synchronous fluorescence spectra. The types of wastewater (sewage, livestock waste/night soils, industrial waste) were easily distinguished by comparing the synchronous fluorescence spectra of the influent wastewater. The prominent peak of protein-like fluorescence (PLF) was observed for livestock waste/night soils whereas sewage exhibited a unique fluorescence peak at a wavelength of 370 nm. Irrespective of the wastewater types, the distribution percentage of R-OM increased from the influent to the effluent. Livestock waste/night soils showed the highest removal efficiency among all the three types of wastewater. There was no statistical difference of the removal efficiency between a traditional activated sludge and biological advanced treatment processes. Removal efficiency based on dissolved organic carbon DOC presented good correlations with the distribution percentage of R-OM and fulvic-like fluorescence (FLF) of the influent. The prediction for DOC removal efficiency was improved by using multiple regression analyses based on some selected OM characteristics and mixed liquid suspended solid (MLSS).

  • This study analyzes current technologies in personal protective equipment (PPE) and mechanisms that can be used in the agricultural field to provide data for research and development on PPE for farmers. There is growing awareness of the importance of PPE as part of efforts to reduce agricultural accidents, but data remain rare for developing PPE tailored to the farm work environment. In this regard, patent data on PPE can provide useful insights for facilitating relevant technologies and research. This study examines patents and utility models classified under the IPC code in Korea and other countries to analyze patented technologies and recent trends for the period from January 2003 to October 2014. Here Korea, the U.S., Japan, and Europe were considered. The results show that the number of patent applications for PPE remained steady without any sharp fluctuations. KIPO applications accounted for 43.5% of all cases, reflecting the highest proportion among the countries considered. Domestic applicants accounted for 94% of all cases. In Korea, patent applications were concentrated in safety gear for the face and eyes, indicating a high level of technology. The highest level of competition was observed for safety goggles in all countries. Some PPE technologies were dominated by a particular manufacturer. The analysis results for farming-related technologies show the current state of technologies and areas lacking technological development. This study analyzes patented technologies for PPE in Korea and other countries and recent research trends as part of the effort to develop PPE for workers in the farming and livestock industry. This study represents an early-stage effort to develop PPE for workers in the farming and livestock industry, and the results are expected to be useful for tailoring PPE to Korea's farming and livestock environment.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate soil nutrient concentrations and fertilizer recovery of sorghum- sudangrass hybrid (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) as affected by organic nutrient sources. The treatments included livestock compost, alfalfa hay, oilcake, and chemical fertilizer. Nutrient applications were made at the rates equivalent to approximately 210 kg N per hectare. The oilcake and alfalfa materials had the lowest C : N ratio, but the livestock compost had the highest C:N ratio such as 33.7 : 1. The livestock compost resulted in the highest input to ground surface, which increased nutrient concentrations in soil. The oilcake and alfalfa materials with low C : N ratios increased N-mineralization rate in soil compared to livestock. The N uptake efficiency in plants treated by alfalfa or oilcake was approximately 60% of those treated with chemical fertilizer; but those with livestock compost had N uptake efficiency lower than 20%. The $P_2O_5$ uptake efficiency was the highest in the plants treated with the alfalfa hay, but the lowest in those with livestock compost. Recommendation of organic material selection should consider C:N ratio of the raw materials based on the individual crop requirement.
