  • To obtain optimum configuration method and livestock wastewater loading in small-scale livestock wastewater apparatus by natural purification method for treating livestock wastewater, the small-scale livestock wastewater apparatuses were constructed with 9 kinds of combined systems such as aerobic bed (ae)-anaerobic bed (an), ae-ae, ae-anoxic bed (ox), an-an, an-ae, an-ox, ox-ae, ox-an and ox-ox livestock wastewater treatment apparatuses. Under different configuration methods, the removal rate of COD in Ae-Ae and Ae-An livestock wastewater treatment apparatus was higher than that in other configuration methods. The removal rate of T-N in Ae-An livestock wastewater treatment apparatus was higher than that in other configuration methods. Removal rates of SS and T-P were not different regardless of configureation methods in small-scale livestock wastewater treatment apparatus. Under different livestock wastewater loading, the removal rates of pollutants were higher in the order of $50L\;m^{-2}\;day^{-1}{\fallingdotseq}100L\;m^{-2}\;day^{-1}\;>\;200L\;m^{-2}\;day^{-1}$. Therefore, optimum configuration method was Ae-An livestock wastewater treatment apparatus, and optimum livestock wastewater loding was $100L\;m^{-2}\;day^{-1}$ in small-scale livestock wastewater treatment apparatus.

  • BACKGROUND: Large amount of veterinary antibiotics have been used in the livestock industry to prevent diseases and promote growth. These antibiotics are excreted through feces and urine in unchanged form and reach to agricultural fields via application of the livestock manure based composts. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of tetracyclines-resistant bacteria in the soil received livestock manure compost for a long term. METHODS AND RESULTS: Tetracyclines (tetracycline TC, chlortetracycline CTC, and oxytetracycline OTC) resistance bacteria in the soil of rice-onion field applied pig manure compost (PM), in the soil of grass-rye field received cow manure compost (CM), and in the soil of rice field applied inorganic fertilizer (NPK) were determined. The soil received livestock manure composts clearly showed higher number of TC, CTC, and OTC resistance bacteria compared with the soil treated with inorganic fertilizer. The antibiotic resistant bacteria recovered appeared at 80 mg/L of tetracyclines was identified 1 specie, 6 genera 7 species, and 6 genera 7species in the soils received CM, PM, and NPK, respectively. The dominant resistant bacteria with the CM and PM application were Ochrobactrum and Rhodococcus. CONCLUSION: The application of livestock manure compost in the agricultural field is likely to contribute the occurrence of antibiotic resistance bacteria in the agricultural environment.

  • This study was attempted to survey the prevalence of heartworm infection among 253 dogs (male 167, female 86) on the 16 breeding farms in southern Gyeongnam area in May to December 2007. The results obtained from this experiment were summarized as follows; Fifty seven (22.5%) of the 253 examined dogs were heartworms-antigen positive, while twenty five dogs were Microfilaria positive by the modified Knott's method. The regional infection rates were of 25% in Tongyeong and 21% in Goseong, and on the breeding environment aspects, infection rates were lower in rural area than urban area farms. The infection rates were higher in female (26/86, 30.2%) than male dog (31/167, 18.6%). The infection rates by breeding size of farms were 31% (11/35) at <20 head, 26%(35/135) at 20~50 head and 13% (11/82) at >50 head. The infection rates of heartworm in examined dogs at the age of <2, 2~4 and >5 were 10.7% (8/75), 26% (40/154) and 37.5% (9/24), respectively. In the microfillaria-infected 25 dogs, identified Dirofilaria immitis of 21 (84%) using PCR. The dogs infected with heartworm showed the increased number of eosinophil.

  • Thiazolidinediones (TZDs) act as potent activators of the adipose differentiation program in established preadipose cell lines. TZD's have also been investigated in diabetic patients and reported to act as PPAR-${\gamma}$ ligands. In this report, the effects of TZDs on the differentiation pathway of myoblasts have been investigated. C2C12 mouse myoblasts were grown in Dulbecco's Modified Eagles medium for 4-5 days until they reached almost 100% confluency. Post-confluent cells (day 0) were further exposed to adipogenic induction medium along with TZDs for 48 hours. Thereafter, cells were exposed only to TZDs every 48 h until day 10. The control was provided with differentiation medium without any treatment. Alterations in the cells during the differentiation programme were analyzed on the basis of fusion index, oil-red-o staining, adipocyte index, adipocyte stain uptake measurement, immuno-histochemistry and western blotting. Exposure of C2C12 mouse myoblasts to TZDs prevented the expression of myosin heavy chain with parallel increase in the expression of C/EBP-${\alpha}$ and PPAR-${\gamma}$ and acquisition of adipocyte morphology, thus abolishing the formation of multinucleated myotubes. TZDs exert their adipogenic effects only in non-terminally differentiated myoblasts; myotubes were insensitive to the compound. Continuous exposure (at least 4-5 doses) to inducers after the growth arrest was essential to provide a sustained environment to the cells converting to fully matured adipoctyes. The results indicate that TZDs specifically converted the differentiation pathway of myoblasts into that of adipoblasts.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of feed resources and collection system of nonconventional agricultural roughages, and reduction of environment pollution by turning non-conventional agricultural roughages to feed resources and diversification of feed supply. And a series of experiment were conducted to determine the effect of moisture control material on quality of sweet potato stalk, peanut stalk, barley straw, the experiments were conducted at Grassland and Forage Crops Division, National Livestock Research Institute, RDA, Suwon in 1999 and 2000. The results obtained from these experiments are summarized as follows; Acid detergent fiber(ADF), neutral detergent fiber(NDF) and total digestible nutrient(TDN) of sweet potato were 38.8, 50.7 and 58.2% in the control silage, but that of rice straw added silage for moisture control were decreased to 41.5, 50.8 and 56.1%. ADF, NDF, CP(crude protein) and TDN of peanut stalk were 42.2, 49.6, 10.5 and 55.6% on the rice straw added silage for moisture control, and there were not affected by barely straw added silage for moisture control. And ADF, NDF and TDN content of barely straw increased 42.8, 65.8 and 55.1% on the water+inoculants treated silage. The results of this study indicate that non-conventional agricultural roughages to feed resources should be make for silage at silo after dry matter percentage(ab0ut 35%) control. Also, rice straw added silage for moisture control will improve the silage fermentation and conservation. • Livestock behavioral analysis is a factor that has a great influence on livestock health management and agricultural productivity increase. However, most digital devices introduced for behavioral analysis of livestock do not provide raw data and also provide limited analysis results. Such a closed system makes it more difficult to integrate data and build big data, which are essential for the introduction of advanced IT technologies. Therefore, it is necessary to supply farm-scale data collection devices that can be easily used at low cost. This study presents a data collection system for analyzing the behavior of livestock. The system consists of a number of miniature computing units that operate wirelessly, and collects livestock body temperature and acceleration data, location information, and livestock environment data. In addition, this study presents an algorithm for estimating the behavior of livestock based on the collected acceleration data. For the experiment, a system was built in a Korean cattle farm in Icheon, Gyeonggi-do, and data were collected for 20 Korean cattle, and based on this, the empirical and analysis results were presented.

  • The trend toward intensification of livestock raising, confinement in barn has increased in recent days. The move toward concentrated animal feeding operations reduces per unit costs and permits farmers to better earnings in spite of fluctuation in hog prices. However, this also results in outbreaks of a lot of animal wastes and odorous compounds. Emissions of these malodorous compounds produced from concentrated animal feeding operations have become a concern for both public and regulatory agencies and are causing the complaints of residents in rural area. For competitive sustainable swine production industry, odor management plans systematically identify potential odor sources, determine control strategies to reduce these odors, and establish criteria for implementing these strategies. Since, the malodor originates from microbial activities involving a variety of microbes, understanding the characteristics of the microflora present in swine manure is essential for developing effective odor control techniques. This paper reviews the available information in the literature related to the types of bacteria in swine manure, the potential odorous compounds associated with different bacterial genera, and the corresponding techniques used to control odor based on microbiological principles.

  • Pigs express their reactions to their environment and health status through a variety of sounds, such as grunting, coughing, and screaming. Given the significance of pig vocalizations, their study has recently become a vital source of data for livestock industry workers. To facilitate this, we propose a lightweight deep learning model based on MobileNet that analyzes pig vocal patterns to distinguish pig voices from farm noise and differentiate between vocal sounds and coughing. This model was able to accurately identify pig vocalizations amidst a variety of background noises and cough sounds within the pigsty. Test results demonstrated that this model achieved a high accuracy of 98.2%. Based on these results, future research is expected to address issues such as analyzing pig emotions and identifying stress levels.
