Human endogenous retroviruses (HERVs) have been implicated in the pathogenesis of several human diseases as multi-copy members in the human genome. Their gene expression profiling could provide us with important insights into the pathogenic relationship between HERVs and cancer. In this study, we have evaluated the genomic structure and quantitatively determined the expression patterns in the env gene of a variety of HERV family members located on six specific loci by the RetroTector 10 program, as well as real-time RT-PCR amplification. The env gene transcripts evidenced significant differences in the human tumor/normal adjacent tissues (colon, liver, uterus, lung and testis). As compared to the adjacent normal tissues, high levels of expression were noted in testis tumor tissues for HERV-K, in liver and lung tumor tissues for HERV-R, in liver, lung, and testis tumor tissues for HERV-H, and in colon and liver tumor tissues for HERV-P. These data warrant further studies with larger groups of patients to develop biomarkers for specific human cancers.

Objective: To evaluate the impact of energy and access methods on extrahepatic tumor spreading and the ablation zone in an ex vivo subcapsular tumor mimic model with a risk of extrahepatic tumor spreading. Materials and Methods: Forty-two tumor-mimics were created in bovine liver blocks by injecting a mixture of iodine contrast material just below the liver capsule. Radiofrequency (RF) ablations were performed using an electrode placed parallel or perpendicular to hepatic surface through the tumor mimic with low- and high-power protocols (groups 1 and 2, respectively). Computed tomography (CT) scans were performed before and after ablation. The presence of contrast leak on the hepatic surface on CT, size of ablation zone, and timing of the first roll-off and popping sound were compared between the groups. Results: With parallel access, one contrast leak in group 1 (1/10, 10%) and nine in group 2 (9/10, 90%) (p < 0.001) were identified on post-ablation CT. With perpendicular access, six contrast leaks were identified in each group (6/11, 54.5%). The first roll-off and popping sound were significantly delayed in group 1 irrespective of the access method (p = 0.002). No statistical difference in the size of the ablation zone of the liver specimen was observed between the two groups (p = 0.247). Conclusion: Low-power RF ablation with parallel access is proposed to be effective and safe from extrahepatic tumor spreading in RF ablation of a solid hepatic tumor in the subcapsular location. Perpendicular placement of an electrode to the capsule is associated with a risk of extrahepatic tumor spreading regardless of the power applied.
The image data amount that used in medical institution with great development of medical technology is increasing rapidly. Therefore, people need automation method that use image processing description than macrography of doctors for analysis many medical image. In this paper. we propose that acquire texture information to using GLCM about liver area of abdomen CT image, and automatically detects liver tumor using PCA from this data. Method by one feature as intensity of existent liver humor detection was most but we changed into 4 principal component accumulation images using GLCM's texture information 8 feature. Experiment result, 4 principal component accumulation image's variance percentage is 89.9%. It was seen this compare with liver tumor detecting that use only intensity about 92%. This means that can detect liver tumor even if reduce from dimension of image data to 4 dimensions that is the half in 8 dimensions.
Primary cardiac tumors are uncommon in all age group. In contrast, tumors metastatic to the heart are significantly more common. On rare occasions, tumor may extend into the heart chamber via inferior vena cava from other parts of the body, such as liver, kidney, and uterus cava. With recent advancement in diagnostic imaging modalities and surgical techniques, cardiac tumors are now potentially curably form of heart disease. The most important factor in diagnosing the tumor is a high index of clinical suspicion. Six patients underwent surgical removal of intracardiac tumor during a 5-year period. The mean age of the 4 women and two men was 40 years [range 23 to 60]. All patients were operated on in the last five years of the studied period. All patients had symptoms varying in duration from 1 month to 4 years [average 13 months]. 2-Dimensional echocardiography contributed most to preoperative diagnosis, confirming presence of an intracardiac tumor in all examined patients. Of the six intracardiac tumor, 5 were myxomas [4 left atrial and 1 right ventricular] and one right atrial metastasis from hepatocellular carcinoma of the liver. In all cases, tumor masses were successfully excised. One patient expired after the operation on account of low cardiac out-put syndrome. Remained one patient among six, tumor mass extended into RA and RV with a stalk via IVC. On later follow-up study showed cold area on liver scan [hepatocellular ca.], so she was transferred to internal medicine, department for chemotherapy. Follow up results showed no signs of tumor recurrence in 4 myxoma cases.

The barcelona clinic liver cancer (BCLC) staging systemis regarded as the optimal staging system to predict prognosis and guide treatmentfor hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) .According to the BCLC classification, only patients with BCLC A stage should undergo liver resection. In contrast, patients with intermediate-advanced HCC should be scheduled for palliative therapies, such as transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) and target therapy, even if the lesion is resectable. More and more studies report good short-term and long-term outcomes in patients with intermediate-advanced HCC treated by radical resection and many patients benefited from curative resection. The aim of this review was to evaluate the role of surgery beyond the BCLC recommendations. A revision of the BCLC algorithm should be proposed.
Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effects of BCRP expression on tumor recurrence, metastasis and treatment tolerability. Methods: A VX2 rabbit liver tumor model was established. Division was randomly into 4 groups: namely saline control group; A group, given hydration lipiodol; B group, Ad-p53; and C group, Ad-p53+hydration lipiodol. After the intervention, samples were collected to detect the BCRP, MMP-2, VEGF and PCNA. Results: The expression of BCRP, MMP-2, PCNA and VEGF in tumors in Group A had no significant difference when compared with the control group, while in B and C group, the values were significantly lower (P<0.05). BCRP positive expression in metastatic lesions significantly increased (P<0.05), and was correlated with MMP-2 ($X^2=6.172$, P=0.0131). Conclusions: BCRP may play an important role in mediating liver cancer multidrug resistance to chemotherapy, and may be correlated with tumor recurrence and metastasis, which leads to weakened treatment effect. Ad-P53 can down-regulate the expression of related genes, playing a role in multidrug resistance reversal and increased sensitivity in liver cancer treatment.
Osteoclast-like giant cell tumor of the liver is an extremely rare malignancy with poor prognosis. To our knowledge, 5 cases have been reported in English literatures, but there was no report about fine needle aspiration cytologic(FNAC) features. We experienced a case of osteoclast-like giant cell tumor of the liver obtained by computed tomography(CT)-guided FNAC and needle biopsy. The cytologic findings mimicked slant cell tumor of the bone. A large hepatic mass of the left lobe with abdominal wall invasion was found by CT in a 46- year-old female complaining of epigastric pain. The FNAC showed moderately cellular smears consisting of osteoclast-like giant cells and mononuclear cells, which were individually scattered or intermingled in clusters. The osteoclast-like giant cells had abundant cytoplasms and multiple small round nuclei with fine chromatin and distinct nucleoli. The mononuclear cells had moderate amount of cytoplasm and relatively bland-looking oval nuclei with single small nucleoli. All of the cytologic features recapitulated the histologic findings of bland-looking osteoclast-like multinucleated giant cells evenly dispersed throughout the background of mononuclear cell. The immunohistochemical study showed positive reaction for CD68 and vimentin, but negative for cytokeratin in both osteoclast-like slant cells and mononuclear cells.

In recent years, the image processing mechanisms are used widely in several medical areas for improving earlier detection and treatment stages, in which the time factor is very important to discover the disease in the patient as possible as fast, especially in various cancer tumors such as the liver cancer. Liver cancer has been attracting the attention of medical and sciatic communities in the latest years because of its high prevalence allied with the difficult treatment. Statistics indicate that liver cancer, throughout world, is the one that attacks the greatest number of people. Over the time, study of MR images related to cancer detection in the liver or abdominal area has been difficult. Early detection of liver cancer is very important for successful treatment. There are few methods available to detect cancerous cells. In this paper, an automatic approach that integrates the intensity-based segmentation and k-means clustering approach for detection of cancer region in MRI scan images of liver.
Background: Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is the most widely used and studied method internationally for the local treatment of liver tumors. However, the extension of coagulation necrosis in one RFA procedure is limited and incomplete coverage of the damaged area can lead to a high local recurrence rate. Objective: In this study, we compared the effects of different solutions in enhancing hepatic radiofrequency by establishing a rabbit VX2 liver cancer model. We also determined the optimal solution to maximise effects on the extent of RFA-induced coagulation necrosis. Methods: Thirty VX2 tumor rabbits were randomly assigned to five groups: group A, RFA alone; group B, RFA with anhydrous ethanol injection; group C, RFA with 5% hypertonic saline injection; group D, RFA with lidocaine injection; and group E, RFA with a mixed solution. Routine ultrasound examinations and contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) of the ablation areas were performed after RFA. Then, we measured the major axis and transverse diameter and compared the areas of coagulation necrosis induced by RFA. Results: The mean ablation area range increased in groups B, C and especially E, and the scopes were greater compared with group A. Preoperative application of anhydrous ethanol, hypertonic saline, lidocaine and the mixed solution (groups B, C, D and E, respectively) resulted in larger coagulation necrosis areas than in group A (p<0.05). Among the groups, the coagulation necrosis areas in group E was largest, and the difference was statistically significant compared with other groups (p<0.05). Pathological findings were consistent with imaging results. Conclusions: A mixture of dehydrated alcohol, hypertonic saline and lidocaine injected with RFA increases the extent of coagulation necrosis in the liver with a single application, and the mixed solution is more effective than any other injection alone.

Supradiaphragmatic liver is a rare condition. Establishing an accurate preoperative diagnosis is difficult. Operative exploration is necessary to differentiate this lesion from intrathoracic masses, such as a pleural based tumor, diaphragmatic tumor and peripheral lung tumor. However, with the aid of the hepatocyte-specific magnetic resonance imaging contrast agent, gadoxetic acid (Gd-EOB-DTPA), functional hepatocytes in the lesion can be identified in the hepatobiliary phase, potentially allowing an accurate and non-invasive diagnosis. We report a case of supradiaphragmatic liver diagnosed by Gd-EOB-DTPA-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging.
