종모돈의 정액성상과 번식성적에 미치는 품종, 연령, 계절, 산차 및 교배방법의 영향 (Effect of Breed, Age, Season, Parity and Mating Type on Boar Semen Characteristics and Fertilizing Capacity)

  • 본 연구는 1996년부터 1999년까지 다비 AI 센타에서 사육되는 종모돈 199두와 종빈돈 4,181두를 가지고 종모돈의 정액생산과 번식성적에 미치는 품종, 연령, 계절, 산차 및 교배방법의 영향을 구명하고자 실시한 바, 그 얻어진 결과는 다음과 같았다. 1. 정액량은 Landrace (L) 종이 266.8 $m\ell$로 제일 많았고, Yorkshire (Y) 종이 그 다음으로 많았으며, Duroc (D) 종이 제일 적었다. 정자 운동성은 품종간에 차이가 없었다. 정자농도는 Landrace 종이 4.7$\times$109 sperm/$m\ell$로 제일 낮았고, 정액량이 제일적은 Duroc 종이 5.7$\times$$10^{9}$ sperm/$m\ell$ 로 제일 높았다. 종모돈의 연령에 따른 정액량은 2세 때가 213.3 $m\ell$로 제일 많았고, 4, 3 그리고 l 세의 순서로 정액량이 감소하였다. 2. 종모돈의 계절에 따른 정액량은 겨울철이 228.6 $m\ell$로 제 일 많았고, 가을, 여름, 봄의 순서로 정액량이 감소하였다. 정자농도는 봄철이 5.9$\times$109 sperm/$m\ell$로 제일 높았으며, 여름, 겨울, 그리고 가을의 순서로 낮았다. 3. 교배방법에 따른 복당 생시체중은 품종간 처리구간에 차이점을 인정할 수 없었으나 복당 출생시 생존수에 있어서는 자연종부후 인공수정을 실시한 처리구에서 9.5두로 제일 많았으며, 인공수정을 실시한 처리구에서는 9.2두, 그리고 자연종부를 실시한 처리구에서는 8.9두로 처리구간에 유의성 (P<0.01)이 인정되었다. 4. 교배그룹간에서는 L (우)$\times$Y (♂) 교배조합과 L (♀)$\times$L (♂) 교배조합이 Y (♀)$\times$ L (♂) 교배조합 Y (♀)$\times$Y (♂) 교배조합보다 복당 생시체중이 무거웠으며, 복당 출생시 생존 자돈수에 있어서도 비슷한 경향을 나타내었다. 자연종부와 인공수정간에 복당 생시체중과 복당 출생시 생존자돈수는 유의차가 없었다. 5. 산차간에 있어서는 2~6 산차의 복당 생시체중과 복당 출생시 생존 자돈수가 각각 13.5 kg 과 9.5 두로 1산차와 7~9 산차에 비하여 우수하였다.

REVIEW: Footpad dermatitis (FPD) in chickens

  • Footpad dermatitis (FPD) can be considered as a threat for poultry production due to it causes losses due to condemnation in slaughterhouse. The prevalence and the severity of FPD in broiler breeders increase over time with development of poultry industry. The condition is produced by multifactorial including include drinker design and management, diet composition, house (temperature and humidity levels), litter (type, quality, and quantity) and gut health. Bacterial infections can be associated. FPD lesions can develop in less than a week. FPD is a variable size of inflammatory lesion of the footpad in commercial poultry characterized by necrotic lesions on the plantar surface of the footpad of poultry. These lesions can be exposed after removal of fecal mass and litter stuck on it. There are considerable and numerous interactions between the environment and the genetic traits. Prevention depends mainly on improvement of litter condition. Genetic selection against footpad dermatitis must be contributed to reduce pain and suffering for particular bird experiencing contact dermatitis as well as to avoid economic losses. The objective of this review is to collect different literature written about FPD to be available to students, researchers and veterinarian in poultry practical.

Acute porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome outbreaks in immunized sow herds: from occurrence to stabilization under whole herd vaccination strategy

  • Outbreaks of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) in vaccinated sow herds from occurrence to stabilization were monitored and analyzed in terms of serology and reproductive performance. Three different conventional pig farms experienced severe reproductive failures with the introduction of a type 1 PRRSV. These farms had adopted mass vaccination of sows using a type 2 PRRSV modified live vaccine (MLV). Therefore, to control the type 1 PRRSV, an alternative vaccination program utilizing both type 1 and type 2 MLV was undertaken. Following whole herd vaccinations with both types of MLV, successful stabilization of PRRS outbreaks was identified based on serological data (no viremia and downward trends in ELISA antibody titers in both sows and suckling piglets) and recovery of reproductive performance. Additionally, through comparison of the reproductive parameters between outbreak and non-outbreak periods, it was identified that PRRSV significantly affected the farrowing rate and the number of suckling piglets per litter at all three pig farms. Comparison of reproductive parameters between periods when the different vaccination strategies were applied revealed that the number of piglets born in total and born dead per litter were significantly increased after the introduction of the type 1 PRRS MLV.

New records of 13 rotifers including Bryceella perpusilla Wilts et al., 2010 and Philodina lepta Wulfert, 1951 from Korea

  • Rotifers collected from various terrestrial and aquatic habitats such as mosses on trees or rocks, tree barks, wet mosses and wet leaf litter at streams, and dry leaf litter at four different locations in Korea, were investigated. Thirteen species belonging to nine genera in five families of monogonont and bdelloid rotifers were identified: Bryceella perpusilla Wilts, Martinez Arbizu and Ahlrichs, 2010, Collotheca ornata (Ehrenberg, 1830), Habrotrocha flava Bryce, 1915, H. pusilla (Bryce, 1893), Macrotrachela aculeata Milne, 1886, M. plicata (Bryce, 1892), Mniobia montium Murray, 1911, M. tentans Donner, 1949, Notommata cyrtopus Gosse, 1886, Philodina lepta Wulfert, 1951, P. tranquilla Wulfert, 1942, Pleuretra hystrix $Barto{\check{s}}$, 1950 and Proalinopsis caudatus (Collins, 1873). All these rotifers are new to Korea, and B. perpusilla, H. flava, M. montium, P. caudatus, P. hystrix and P. lepta are new to Asia as well. Of interest, the present study is the first to record B. perpusilla outside its type locality. In addition, P. lepta has previously been recorded from only three European countries.

축분을 이용한 활성탄소 제조와 이의 악취 흡착성 분석 (Manufacture of Activated Carbon Using Livestock Manure and it's Odor Absorptiveness)

  • 본 시험은 축분을 이용한 활성탄소를 제조하는 기술을 개발하고 이의 활용방안을 연구하여 축분의 처리방법을 다변화하고 제조된 활성탄소의 토양개량재, 악취흡착재 등 농업적 이용을 모색하기 위하여 악취제거시험 등을 수행하였으며 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 1. 가축분을 건조, 펠렛화 과정을 거친 후 $400^{\circ}C$에서 1시간 탄화처리하고 $750^{\circ}C$에서 1시간 활성화처리시 활성탄소가 제조되었다. 2. 축분의 회분 함량은 돈분퇴비가 11.9%로 낮았으나 계분퇴비 29.8%, 젖소깔짚 40.7%로 높았다. 휘발성물질은 젖소깔짚 11.6%, 계분퇴비 18.8%, 계분 31.0%, 돈분퇴비 22.3% 이었으나 육계깔짚은 49.8%로 높았다. 3. 축분활성탄소의 비표면적은 계분퇴비 259.8, 계분 209.8, 돈분퇴비 442.3, 젖소깔짚 $812.9\;m^2/g$으로 야자각 활성탄소 $1,040\;m^2/g$ 보다 낮았으며 미세기공의 크기는 육계깔짚 $5.02\;{\AA}$으로서 큰 반면 젖소깔짚은 $0.39\;{\AA}$으로 야자각 활성탄소와 비슷하였다. 4. 축분활성탄소의 요오드 흡착능력은 $530{\sim}580mg/g$으로 야자각 활성탄소의 1,000 mg/g 보다 낮았다. 5. 암모니아가스의 흡착율은 계분이나 계분퇴비로 만든 활성탄소가 가장 낮았으며 젖소깔짚 활성탄소가 가장 높았으며 계분퇴비 활성탄소는 20분 경에 흡착 포화에 도달하는 반면 젖소깔짚 활성탄소는 40분이 되어서 흡착 포화에 도달하였다. 6. 황화수소의 경우 휘발성물질이 비교적 많은 육계깔짚, 계분퇴비, 산란계분 등으로 만든 활성탄소에서 흡착율이 낮았으며 젖소깔짚 활성탄소에서 높았다.

Sequencing, Genomic Structure, Chromosomal Mapping and Association Study of the Porcine ADAMTS1 Gene with Litter Size

  • A disintegrin-like and metalloprotease (reprolysin type) with thrombospondin type 1 motif (ADAMTS1) plays a critical role in follicular rupture and represents a major advance in the proteolytic events that control ovulation. In this study, a 9,026-bp DNA sequence containing the full coding region, all 8 introns and part of the 5'and 3' untranslated region of the porcine ADAMTS1 gene was obtained. Analysis of the ADAMTS1 gene using the porcine radiation hybrid panel indicated that pig ADAMTS1 is closely linkage with microsatellite marker S0215, located on SSC13q49. The open reading frame of its cDNA covered 2,844 bp and encoded 947 amino acids. The coding region of porcine ADAMTS1 as determined by sequence alignments shared 85% and 81% identity with human and mouse cDNAs, respectively. The deduced protein contained 947 amino acids showing 85% sequence similarity both to the human and mouse proteins, respectively. Comparative sequencing of three pig breeds revealed one single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) within exon 7 of which a G-C substitution at position 6006 changes a codon for arginine into a codon for proline. The substitution was situated within a PvuII recognition site and developed as a PCR-RFLP marker for further use in population variation investigations and association analysis with litter size. Allele frequencies of this SNP were investigated in seven pig breeds/lines. An association analysis in a new Qingping female line suggested that different ADAMTS1 genotypes have significant differences in litter size (p<0.01).

Loss of Aquaporin-3 in Placenta and Fetal Membranes Induces Growth Restriction in Mice

  • Aquaporin (AQP) 3, a facilitated transporter of water and glycerol, expresses in placenta and fetal membranes, but the detailed localization and function of AQP3 in placenta remain unclear. To elucidate a role of AQP3 in placenta, we defined the expression and cellular localization of AQP3 in placenta and fetal membranes, and investigated the structural and functional differences between wild-type and AQP3 null mice. Gestational sacs were removed during mid-gestational period and amniotic fluid was aspirated for measurements of volume and composition. Fetuses with attached placenta and fetal membranes were weighed and processed for histological assessment. AQP3 strongly expressed in basolateral membrane of visceral yolk sac cells of fetal membrane, the syncytiotrophoblasts of the labyrinthine placenta and fetal nucleated red blood cell membrane. Mice lacking AQP3 did not exhibit a significant defect in differentiation of trophoblast stem cells and normal placentation. However, AQP3 null fetuses were smaller than their control litter mates in spite of a decrease in litter size. The total amniotic fluid volume per gestational sac was reduced, but the amniotic fluid-to-fetal weight ratio was increased in AQP3 null mice compared with wild-type mice. Glycerol, free fatty acid and triglyceride levels in amniotic fluid of AQP3 null mice were significantly reduced, whereas lactate level increased when compared to those of wild-type mice. These results suggest a role for AQP3 in supplying nutrients from yolk sac and maternal blood to developing fetus by facilitating transport of glycerol in addition to water, and its implication for the fetal growth in utero.

Evaluation of dry feeding and liquid feeding to lactating sows under high temperature environment

  • Background: Liquid feeding system has been introduced to domestic swine farms, but negative cognition about liquid feeding system has been remained for feed waste decay related with poor management and microbial contamination. For these reasons, this study was conducted to evaluate the effects of feeding method in lactating sows. Methods: A total of 30 mixed-parity (average 4.13) lactating sows (Yorkshire ${\times}$ Landrace) with an initial BW of $218.8{\pm}19.5kg$ was used in a 3 week trial. Sows were allotted to 1 of 2 treatments in a completely randomized design by their body weight, backfat thickness, parity and alive litter weight. One of treatments was dry feeding and the other was liquid feeding (water to feed ratio, 1:1). Experimental diets contained 3265 kcal ME/kg, 12.6 % CP, 5.76 % EE, 1.09 % total lysine, 0.25 % total methionine, as fed basis. Results: Dry feeding treatment had high body weight loss rather than liquid feeding treatment (P = 0.04). Dry feeding treatment had tendency to increase litter weight at 21d of lactation (P = 0.06) and litter weight gain (P = 0.04) during lactation period (0-3 week). Sows fed dry feeding method made milk containing high content of casein and total solid rather than sows fed liquid feeding method (P = 0.04). In addition, dry feeding treatment had tendency to higher content of milk fat, protein and solid not fat on 21d of lactation (P = 0.07). Sows fed dry feeding type also showed higher milk energy content in milk of 21d lactation (P = 0.05). Furthermore, liquid feeding treatment showed high occurrence in feed waste during lactation period (P <0.01). Conclusion: Dry feeding method was more suitable feeding method to lactating sows under high temperature environment like lactating barn.

오리사 바닥재의 수분 증발량 평가 (Assessment of Evaporation Rates from Litter of Duck House)

  • The domestic duck industry is the sixth-largest among the livestock industries. However, 34.3% of duck houses were the duck houses arbitrarily converted from plastic greenhouses. This type of duck house was difficult to properly manage internal air temperature and humidity environment. Humidity environment inside duck houses is an important factor that directly affects the productivity and disease occurrence of the duck. Although the humidity environments of litters (bedding materials) affect directly the inside environment of duck houses, there are only few studies related to humidity environment of litters. In this study, evaporation rates from litters were evaluated according to air temperature, relative humidity, water contents of litters, and wind speed. The experimental chamber was made to measure evaporation rates from litters. Temperature and humidity controlled chamber was utilized during the conduct of the laboratory experiments. Using the measured data, a multi linear regression analysis was carried out to derive the calculation formula of evaporation rates from litters. In order to improve the accuracy of the multi linear regression model, the partial vapor pressure directly related to evaporation was also considered. Variance inflation factors of air temperature, relative humidity, partial vapor pressure, water contents of litters, and wind speed were calculated to identify multicollinearity problem. The Multiple $R^2$ and adjusted-$R^2$ of regression model were calculated at 0.76 and 0.71, respectively. Therefore, the regression models were developed in this study can be used to estimate evaporation rates from the litter of duck houses.

Effects of grain-based pecking blocks on productivity and welfare indicators in commercial broiler chickens

  • Objective: This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of grain-based pecking blocks on productivity and welfare status at two commercial broiler welfare-certified farms. Methods: Production and welfare indicators were assessed at two farms (designated Farm A and B). Both farms had two windowless houses with forced tunnel-type ventilation and housed broilers at stocking densities of approximately 16.7 birds/m2 (Farm A) and 16.8 birds/m2 (Farm B). Each house was divided into two or three equal sections and was provided with or without pecking blocks. Grain-based pecking blocks, measuring 25 × 25 × 25 cm, were given to broilers in both farms at 1 block per 1,000 birds. Various parameters including productivity (body weight and flock uniformity), corticosterone levels (in fecal droppings and feathers), footpad dermatitis, hock burn, feather dirtiness, gait score, litter quality, body surface temperature, and volatile fatty acids in fecal samples were assessed at 26 days of age, whereas litter quality was analyzed at 13 and 26 days of age. Results: There were no significant effects of providing pecking blocks on productivity (body weight and uniformity), fecal and feather corticosterone, welfare indicators (i.e., footpad dermatitis, hock burn, feather cleanliness, and gait score), and litter quality (i.e., moisture, nitrogen, and pH). No differences in body surface temperature between the control and enrichment treatments were noted in Farm B, but body surface temperatures of the head (p = 0.029) and legs (p = 0.011) in the enrichment vs. control group were elevated in Farm A. Butyrate concentration in the enrichment vs control group was higher in Farm B (p = 0.023), but this effect was not detected in Farm A. Conclusion: It is concluded that grain-based pecking blocks did not affect performance and welfare indicators. Further studies are warranted to elucidate the potential impact of grain-based pecking blocks on gut health indicators.
