In lithium-ion batteries, separator membrane's, main role is to physically isolate a cathode and an anode while maintaining rapid transport of ionic charge carriers during the passage of electric current. As far as battery safety is concerned, the electrical isolation of electrodes is most crucial since unexpected short-circuits across the membrane induces hot spots where thermal runaway may break out. Internal short-circuits are generally believed to occur by protrusions on the electrode surface either by unavoidable deposits of metallic impurities or by dendritic lithium growth during battery operation. Another cause is shrinkage of the separator membrane when exposed to heat. If separator membrane can be engineered to prevent the internal short-circuit, it will not be difficult to improve lithium-ion batteries' safety. Commonly the separators employed in lithium-ion batteries are made of polyethylene (PE) and/or polypropylene (PP). These materials have terrible limitations in preventing the fore-mentioned internal short-circuit between electrodes due to their poor dimensional stability and mechanical strength. In this study we have developed a novel separator membrane that possesses very high thermal and mechanical stability. The cells employing this separator provided noticeable safety improvement in the various abuse tests.
We prepared the polyaniline (Pani) film and powder by chemical polymerization and doping with different dopants and also investigated the capability of Li//polyaniline cells after assembling. The oxidation/reduction potentials and electrochemical reaction of Li//polyaniline cells were tested by cyclic voltammetry technique. The Li//Pani-HCl cells with 10% and 20% conductors show a little larger specific discharge capacities than that without conductor. The highest discharge capacity of almost 50 mAh/g at 100th cycle is also achieved. However, Li//Pani-LiPF6 with 20% conductor shows a remarkable performance of ~90 mAh/g at 100th cycle. This is feasible value for using as the positive electrode material of lithium ion secondary batteries. It is also proved that the powder type electrode of Pani is better to use than the film type one to improve the specific discharge capacity and its stability with cycle.
As the separator becomes thinner, the role of thermal stability becomes more important in ensuring the high capacity of medium- and large-sized lithium-ion secondary batteries. In this study, we researched coating technology to improve the separator's thermal stability. We minimized the coating time by optimizing the design of a vertical two-stage coater that was thin, uniform, and capable of coating on both sides at the same time with a maximum 2㎛ thickness coating layer of fluorinated polymer (PVdF-HFP) on the bare polyethylene (PE) separator, which increased the thermal stability. In addition, during the coating process, a dual-jacket-roll method of drying was developed that increased the drying effectiveness without thermal damage to the separator. We also investigated the thermal stability of the separator manufactured from a coating machine, and studied the battery-applied performance by making a lithium-ion pouch battery.
Cross-linked network solid polymer electrolytes were prepared by means of in situ hydrosilylation between poly[hydromethylslioxane-g-oligo(ethylene oxide)] and diallyl or triallyl group-containing poly(ethylene glycols). The conductivities of the resulting polymer electrolytes were greatly enhanced upon the addition of poly(ethylene glycol) dimethyl ether (PEGDME) as an ion-conducting plasticizer. Conductivities of the cross-linked polymer electrolytes were more dependent on the molecular weight of PEGDME than on the cross-linkers. The maximum conductivity was found to be 5.6${\times}$10$\^$-4/ S/cm at 30$^{\circ}C$ for the sample containing 75 wt% of PEGDME (M$\_$n/ =400). These electrolytes exhibited electrochemical stability up to 4.5 V against the lithium reference electrode. We observed reversible electrochemical plating/stripping of lithium on the nickel electrode.
The purpose of this study is to research and develop LiMnO$_2$-organic and Li$_{0.3}$MnO$_{2}$-organic composite with high energy density for Lithium ion polymer battery. This paper describes cyclic voltammetry, impedance sepctroscopy, electrochemical properties of LiMnO$_2$-organic and Li$_{0.3}$MnO$_{2}$-organic composite with polymer electrolyte as a function of a mixed ratio. The first discharge capacity of LiMnO$_2$-PAn with 3 wt.% PAn was 83mHA/g, while that of Li$_{0.3}$MnO$_{2}$-PPy composite was 136 mAh/g. The Ah efficiency was above 98% after the 2nd cycle. The LiMnO$_2$-PAn with DMcT 2 wt.% and Li$_{0.3}$MnO$_{2}$-PPy composites cathode with 5wt. PPy in PVDF-PC-EC-LiClO$_4$ electrolyte showed good capaity with cycling. The discharge capacity of LiMnO$_2$-PAn with wt.% DMcT was 80 and 130 mAh/g at 1st and 12th cycle, respectively. The capacity of LiMnO$_2$-PAn composite with 2 wt.% DMcT was higher than that of LiMnO$_2$-PAn composite.mposite.
A lithium-ion battery exhibits high energy density but has many limitations due to safety issues. Currently, as a solution for this, research on solid state batteries is attracting attention and is actively being conducted. Among the solid electrolytes, sulfide-based solid electrolytes are receiving much attention with high ion conductivity, but there is a limit to commercialization due to the relatively high price of lithium sulfide, which is a precursor material. This study focused on the possibility of relatively inexpensive and light lithium hydride and conducted an experiment on it. In order to analyze the characteristics of LiAlH4, ion conductivity and thermal stability were measured, and a composites mixed with PVDF, a representative polymer electrolyte, was synthesized to confirm a change in characteristics. And metallurgical changes in the material were performed through XRD, SEM, and BET analysis, and ion conductivity and thermal stability were measured by EIS and LFA methods. As a result, Li3AlH6 having ion conductivity higher than LiAlH4 is formed by the synthesis of composite materials, and thus ion conductivity is slightly improved, but thermal stability is rapidly degraded due to structural irregularity.
